    I googled Eric Alexander’s crossover patent and it is pretty interesting. The two way crossover looks like a first order woofer crossover with a tweeter wired across the inductor. There is also a resistor wired across the woofer. Four parts: tweeter, woofer, inductor, resistor. That’s it. The patent also describes 3 way and N-Way crossovers based on the same design. The speakers are wired in series and in phase, I.e. the tweeter minus connects directly to the woofers plus. It appears that the speakers are part of the crossover network. Very clever, very simple.

    I have had a large number of speakers over a long audio hobby. There have only been a few that have relieved the musical itch. I purchased a pair of Pendragons awhile back. They are very good. They work in presenting the source given to them. I have a desire to move to the Double Impact but they are just out of my old retired income range. Also my wife would kill me if I had 2 monster speakers in the house. Alas and alack.

    I bought a pair of red DI's about six months ago and absolutely love them. Spoke to Eric a couple times on the phone before I ordered and he was always very helpful, never rushed in answering my questions and never tried to upsell. Soundstage is wide and quite deep and the mids are to die for. They really just disappear when you're listening to them. They're incredibly forgiving in terms of room placement and power needs. Out of the box they were very bright -- too much so -- but they settled down nicely after 40 hours or so. They're not a finicky speaker that needs to be six feet from a wall, toed-in at 15.587 degrees and only sounds good with classical or jazz or rock -- just plunk 'em down roughly where you want them to live and they'll take whatever you throw at them and make it shine. Female vocals with these will give you goosebumps. And for the loads of people who think Tekton speakers are ugly as all get out, I think they're some of the coolest looking speakers out there. The naysayers on the forums that throw Eric's speakers all kinds of hate despite never having heard them have no idea what they're talking about. Eric is really doing something pretty special out there in Utah.

    Lirpa Labs is pleased to announce our newest Krakatoa Subwoofer, an infinite baffle design employing TARDIS technology. It contains four 18 inch drivers ln a cabinet measuring 7 ft. tall, 2 ft. wide, and 0.75 inches deep. Internal volume is currently unknown. OMG. My first intro to Lirpa Labs was in a bar when a stereo enthusiast friend of mine ran up to me with an Audio Magazine. He says, Dave! This phono cart has an antenna and rides around on the L.P. with no tonearm or ANYTHING! - "Hook, Line, and Sinker." I hold on to the excuse that I was a little loaded at the time.

    • @stephensmith3111
      @stephensmith3111 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Davethreshold Yes, another brilliant concept from the genius of Professor I. Lirpa. But ultimately discontinued because the fluid needed for the foam rubber tires from HO scale model racing cars that was used would build up in the record grooves. The only readily available cleaning solvent that worked also had a deleterious effect on the vinyl and was classified as a probable human carcinogen. Professor Lirpa could have undoubtedly develop his own tires that could generate sufficient cornering power to negotiate the inner grooves, but at that point his free ranging intellect had moved on to development of the steam powered turntable. Perhaps he will return to the concept, but it is not likely. In the words of his former lover, Edna Mood: "I never look back, dahling. It distracts from the now."

    Thanks for the terrific interview with Eric Alexander, Steve. I presently own a pair of Eric’s Double Impacts and Mini Lores. I acquired these based upon positive recommendations from you (Mini Lores) and Shawn at Zero Fidelity (Double Impacts). Both times I had the supreme pleasure of ordering and speaking directly with Eric. I took Eric’s advice and upgraded the caps, terminals and internal wiring on the DIs. The 8 ohm Mini Lores are driven by my DIY Amp Camp Amp and the 4 ohm DI’s are mated with a Schiit Aegir and I couldn’t be more delighted with the stellar sound from Eric’s brilliantly designed speakers. I am a now dedicated Tekton fan-boy as a result of my experience. Cheers, Steve!

    • @rossjudson
      @rossjudson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been thinking about DIs (or DI SEs) with a pair of Aegirs monoblocks. How would you describe the sound from the Aegir + DI combo?

    • @motorradmike
      @motorradmike 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ross Judson, I would say rich and enveloping. Wonderful, precise imaging especially front to back. Separation of instruments and individuals singing. I had the DIs originally paired with a single Vidar. While stunning, particularly in bass, though the Aegir has a sweetness in voice with better bass articulation that I think is mostly attributable to class A vs the class AB. As far as power, I’m not sure of any benefit one might have with a pair of bridged Aegirs driving 4 ohm DIs considering the fact that Schiit does not rate their bridged Vidar nor the Aegir for a 4 ohm load. I suggest you try a single Aegir with the very efficient DI’s before needlessly spending money on a bridged pair.

      I think for them it is worth it more than for some other companies. What Eric was saying about the tweeter matching is much easier if you can just drive down to the factory and check yourself vs getting an entire batch made in overseas only to find out it's no good and has to be shipped back. Tekton is in a unique position where manufacturing in the US might actually reduce the cost for the end user.

    • @intrinsicfreedom
      @intrinsicfreedom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find this an interesting nitpick, as a large percentage of speakers are boxes, perhaps wrapped with a veneer. Maybe you didn't know that Tekton's come in virtually any color you can think of, for fifty-dollars. I've never heard of that color option elsewhere, although I'm guessing it's out there. Also, many Tekton models come with the unique tweeter array, which I find not just novel but stylistically unique and attractive. If you are buying principally on the basis of aesthetics, you may be among those who want a different look. If you sound quality is your reason for buying a new pair of speakers, and if it is both very high quality sound and extreme value, I don't think you can go wrong here...

    I find frontported speakers are slightly easier to place (might not resonate as much with the wall behind? 🤷‍♂️). I also find that as long as the rearported speaker is twice the distance of the port diameter away from the wall, there is no exstra roomgain, and actually where they sound the best (I like a bit extra bass though 🤪 but it must be tight and presise). Really thinking about the Tekton Double impact, the ones above that, is also above my budget 🙊

      I settled on a pair pf Lores las year as costing an amount that I was reasonably comfortable with for a speaker that I could only read up on without audition. I knew there was a return policy but I was hoping to avoid the hassle of shipping back a large pair of speakers. As soon as I had my first listening session, I knew they weren't going back. The Lores are outstanding. I only now wonder what some of the other models have to offer in the way of improvement, if that's even discernable in my modest sized listening room. If I do consider another Tekton model, I would now have more confidence with the expense and the performance of these speakers, which would again most likely be ordered without an audition.

    • @TektonDesign
      @TektonDesign 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Adam, you know how this works. They're all tweeters tacking the midrange with only one going out beyond 5kHz - the center one. This is an improvement over the "coax" because the center device is covering midrange in unison with the outside ring. A "coax" is a hollowed-out midrange doughnut with a hole in it for a center tweeter. We've improved upon that arrangement.

    Great speakers, hobby-shop-like customer experience. Bought Tekton Brilliance.
    The good: Great sounding speakers - you hear the soloist right in your room, good sound staging.
    The Bad:
    - the speakers are very intrusive into your living/listening room, chunky, no-beauty-queen
    - had a terrible customer experience: credit card charged May 4th, the speakers shipped 4 weeks later, but NO GRILLES (that were ordered). 4 reminders and 4 promises to send the grilles "tomorrow" later we are on September 3rd with no grilles, and my kids are destroying the woofers. asked for the drawings of the grilles to do it myself DIY - not answer of any sort from the company.
    - the placement of the tweeters, mid-range drivers are NOT what the pictures on the website would show. the tweeters are above the mid-range and well above anybody's head-levels - about 9 inches above my listening level, and to get the best sound I need to stand up or sit on 3 pillows. No Bueno. When asked about the discrepancy between the pictures on the website and what I received, I was tersely told by a receptionist that that "this is the newest design". no less, no more. go figure.
    Summary: half-finished speakers designed, subject to change the design without the notice or explanation before they ship. If this is for you - then they do sound very good. But if you want the speakers that come to your home and just work as promised, then look elsewhere

    The moving mass of the lower mids where the tweets takeover is the same MM as ONE of those tweeters. That is about 1 gram vs. 15-35 grams for a typical midbass/midrange. Martin Colloms stated that dome mids sound like electrostatics. With my Dynaudio D-76 domes they do! What I don't get is running those tweets far below their resonant frequency would normally boost the distortion way up, which is not a good thing.

There's too many, and I mean way too many people over the years on the forums and on TH-cam that almost prove how good these speakers are for the money!🤪🤪🤪🤔😬 I never hear/ see anyone say, that his products are only decent! Well, except for Shawn from zero fidelity who had a slight problem a couple of years back with phasing or something like that and indeed the apparent small flaw was fixed!🤫😉😇

    Great interview, Steve. Eric is a really easy-going guy to work with. Lots of times when you call Tekton, he's the very person you will end up speaking with. I purchased the Pendragons this past year. They were the best speakers I have ever owned. The trouble is, I got greedy and wanted more. I sent the Pendragons back and got the Double Impact SEs. They are pretty great! If you want to know the differences between the two models, check out Jay's rundown of the two (over on Next Best Thing youtube). He pretty much nails it.

      @@audacious22 It's not a knock against the Double Impact SEs that I currently own. But, if you are after the greater value, I'd say the Pendragons can give you A LOT of what the DIs do at a significantly lesser price tag.

    I been following Tekton for a while now. I called them 5 years ago and it was Eric who answered. I was up front saying I was not able to buy now but I would like some information. Eric was awesome, he was not in any hurry and answered my question and added more info. Its been close to 2 years now that I own the Tekton Electron SE and even my wife loves them. That is how good they are. I am a big fan and I spread the gospel of Eric and his speakers. If I could i will have a pair of Moab's. By the way after watching the interview I got up and toed in my speakers.😄

He tried to up sell me and some drivers which would almost double the price. He told me he could not be assured that Would Receive the speakers returned in the same condition that he had shipped them. I knew that meant ,that he was going to deduct money if I even tried. I took a big loss and sold on eBay. So much for the hype!
    Keep up the good work Steve. I love your show.

    • @Woofy-tm8si
      @Woofy-tm8si 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The big advantage has to do with using dome tweeters for the midrange that are exponentially lighter in weight or mass than typical cone midrange diaphrams. That's responsible for a large portion of why the Tektons with the tweeter arrays sound so remarkably present and lifelike. It's all about minimizing the inertial mass of the speaker's sound source in the critical midrange frequencies where listener's ears have the most hearing acuity.

    Several months ago I purchased a DSP and I had a lot of fun playing with Xover points and slopes with my VAF DC-X speakers I’ve had for the last 20 years. The DC-Xs are transmission lines using two six inch woofers and a tweeter in MTM and came with a capacitor in series with the tweeter. While I can improve _some_ recordings with the DSP, nearly all sound best with the original first order Xover with the addition of a small value resistor to tame the treble (my listening room is a bit bright). I’m 100% in agreement with Eric-a speaker is the sum of its parts and as simple as possible (but no simpler) is best.

    • @Davethreshold
      @Davethreshold 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good post! My DIY Satellites were 3-way, complicated, and broke a few rules. I was SURE that 48DB/Octave on the subs would make them less noticeable. So I bought the Beringer Electronic crossover and experimented. It sounded far better at 24/oct. on the sats and the subs. I'm sure your Xover is a better unit. I recommend to anybody building speakers to have an electronic near you and sit there and experiment so you can instantly hear the differences. All the slopes, at the same crossover frequencies, sound totally different! :-)

    • @jonathansturm4163
      @jonathansturm4163 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Davethreshold My DSP is nothing special, a Dayton. My friend who recommended trying it said it was the single best piece of gear he’d ever purchased and I can see why after using mine. BUT what I discovered is that simpler is nearly always better. Hi-fi is all about compromise and “what you gain on the roundabouts you lose on the swings.” I’m still somewhat hopeful of trying a pair of decent 8 inch twin-cone speakers in a Voigt enclosure before I cark it. And driving them with one of Nelson Pass’s amps.

    Have to say you lose all credability when your bending over for manufacturers who only accept positive reviews. I thought they looked fun and cheap, with gorgeous paint jobs, then you see Erins in depth measurements and postive spin met with bullying and threats, shows Eric is nothing more than a dodgy two faced person to be avoided.
    Eric should be saying sorry to Eric and maybe actually listening to him, get his mass produced budget DIY pretend to be audiophile junk improved, cant take a word Eric says serioulsy, he goes tech talk but then you just remember his attitude and whining at negative reviews. Going on about feet while a picture of his speakers in your review on his website has no feet. Guy is untrustworthy, so is his product.
    Tekton speakers have never been audiophile, its always looked like a 90's DIY project range. An educated company owner who makes holes for feet to go through a cabinet. Yawn.
