I've followed this build from day 1. What you have created essentially from scratch is truly mind blowing. However.. I'm pleading with you Jeff, please put some padding on that roll bar! You've got stout metal just inches from the back of your head, god forbid anything happens but in a skull vs rollbar incident, the rollbar will win every time.

  • @jyriniemimuukko5163

First of all, congrats on your build! It's fantastic and shows well your quality of work. And, for what it is worth, Alfarrari sounds great when you step on it!
If I'm not totally of the mark, Ferrari exhaust is designed to muffle the low end frequencies and emphasize the high end notes (created on a specific resonance frequencies - their trademark sound). Being mid-engine they have a shorter exhaust anyway that resonates at higher frequency naturally.
My suggestion is two part. First part is, that you could look in to creating a stepped headers (should you redo them anyway at some stage) to increase the high rpm scavenging and tune the sound. By having the steps at equal length, you can perhaps alleviate the sound effects of non-equal length primaries. Anyway, steps are good for sound, just look at F1 10-years back.
The second part is, that you could experiment with adjustable j-pipes to cancel out low end drone and unwanted frequencies to tune the low rpm sound. Combine this with smaller diameter pipe that will cancel the low end boom naturally. When you muffle the low end, the higher pitch increases (relatively anyway).
Bonus suggestion is that you get into contact with a 360 owner (or rent one for a few hours) and record the sound at different rpms (those that you drive regularly on your Alfarrari) and analyze the fequency peaks on a real F-car. There you have your blueprint! There are cheap mics and RTA software for mobile phones readily available to do the analysis part.

Oh man that acceleration at 20:10 from the outside view is what i have been looking forward to seeing and hearing for so long. Once everything is buttoned up you need to do a 5-10 minute video of some raw sound driving through the mountains or something. What a beautiful noise it makes! So cool seeing it on the road with some spirited driving

Followed this channel since the beginning and finally able to hear this thing scream. It seems like 5 years has flown by and finally you're actually driving the thing hard.
And then as I listened, I couldn't help but notice it. That engine, in that car, for whatever reason, sounds almost identical to the worked 3S-GE Blacktop I had in my RS200 Altezza with ITB's. The redline was 8200 and it had the almost exact same deep-throated induction bellow, metallic raspiness up top and overall acoustics throughout. Really freaky actually... and they're completely different in every way, shape and form!

I had the same issue with a Fiat five speed jumping out of third gear when cruising or power being backed off. Unfortunately, I have to tell you it was a worn synchro. It's worn in a manner that when power is released and the rear wheels drive the engine the load acting on the worn synchro pushes the selector sleeve away from the selected gear and into neutral. Sorry to say, but looks like the box is coming out. That's my two cents worth.

So delighted to see you so happy - worth the amazing effort. Something which might help with the header issue. It’s not about the length but the volume. If one is longer than the other, calculate the volume, and maybe use a smaller diameter tube on the longer pipe. As long as the pipes have the same volume the length doesn’t matter. Best of luck. Excellent work. 👍

I have forgotten what your exhaust setup looks like but if you have a twin system, an x pipe should help giving it that high pitch note. If it already has that, hopefully you can figure out a way to get some equal length headers in there like you said. Either way, i am so happy to see it driving on the road. Been a long journey but in the end it has paid off ten fold. Absolutely love this car!

Hey Jeff. Great car. Good to see it finally on the road. Yeah it doesn't sound like a Ferrari but that would be the custom exhaust methinks. Sounds very European. Very unique. As for the gearbox jumping out of gear. It would not be the syncro because it is for helping it go into gear. I had this problem with a couple of cars. I didn't pick up on what box you have? My problem was a broken spring retainer. When you put the car in a gear a hub slides over the gear which compresses 3 plates to lock in the gear. There is a retaining spring on each side of the hub holding the plates in place. If one spring is broken it will go into gear but won't hold under engine load ( acceleration ). It pops out and the gear is not held. If you google a borg warner 4 speed single rail manual box internal diagram you will see what I mean. I think most old gearboxes have this same system. Do you have a T5? Same diff. Errr I mean gearbox. Te he! Hopefully this might help. Unfortunately you'll have to take the box apart to fix it. The parts are cheap though.

As a 105 owner two of the issues, you noted are reasonably fixes. 1. INDICATORS: The system is a friction fit with a spring wrapping around the steering collum to cancel the indicators, just wrap the spring around one more time. Will re tension the system. 2. EXHAUST SIDEWAYS MOVEMENT; . Have a look at the original Alfa 105 exhaust system ( rear most muffler), it has what are effectively giant rubber bands mounting from the muffler to the body. Very effective , keeps the system in tension and lasts forever

Shakedown time can always be fun as you not only get the reward of the first drive but the slight gentle tweaks towards perfection always feel so rewarding! shame it looks like a worn gearbox syncro but thats well within your capabilities to solve. Soundwise would you experiment with mid box position on 1 pipe to counteract the unequal length headers? or maybe making the crossover point further back of space allows?

Love it! Sounds immense in those drive-by shots! Great to see you terrorising some very familiar test/shakedown roads :)

Geoff I was grinning like an idiot watching that. I can only imagine what it was like to drive. Epic. But please next time you drive it, get the wife stood at the side of the road filming more of those moving shots. 👍

I’ve been waiting on this video for a very very long time. Definitely gives me inspiration with my GTV 2000 Build. I ended up getting a TREMEC T-5 transmission, which we will be test fitting in the next few days.

FANTASTIC, I was with you in the car, thank you, a 5 year build, really? I remember you going to pick up a heap of rust 🤣As usual, always a pleasure following you.
As for your problem below 3k, I have an easy fix, not too expensive either, just drive above 😜🤣
To be fair, a Ferrari is not best at town speed, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Again, I wouldn't worry about the sound (even though it could sound better), it actually is a bit Alfa like.
Anyway looking forward for part 2 🤣🤣🤣
