I keep wanting to tell you about a budget meal my mom made when I was a kid, that my sister and I absolutely loved! We still make it for our kids today! :) It was just a package of hotdogs cut up, about 4 or 5 russet potatoes peeled and cut up, a bag of carrots peeled and cut up, all put into a large pot with 2 cans of cream of mushroom and about one can of milk. Add salt and pepper to taste! She called it "Hotdog Stew". We never knew it was a budget meal, and asked for it often! I LOVE your meal ideas and your beautiful family, Brooke! Thank you for being a ray of light in this dark world.

That sounds exactly like one of my mom's budget meals. My dad's mom could be a little judgmental, so I was surprised when, as an adult, she told me that she missed it. My mom made some, froze it and I flew it down to her.
Thank you for this ... I love that there is no shame in living paycheck to paycheck and needing a budget meal anymore....it doesn't mean I've failed my family....I can still get a meal on the table x
Our small town has Kroger, WalMart, DG and Family Dollar. I shop local farmers as much as possible. It’s 25 miles to the big city and I refuse to waste gas.
Sounds just like my situation but only 15 miles away from stores.
My town just has a small family owned grocery within 5 minutes and it’s over a half hour drive to get to Walmart. Luckily we have lots of Amish and other farm stands on the side of the road. Those places are much cheaper than the grocery store and the food is so fresh it tastes much better.

I was proud of myself yesterday I found whole rotisserie chicken for under 4 dollars at Walmart. I got 2 .
Fyi You can eat any seed from any squash. Squash recipe. Half an acorn squash stuff it with kielbasa, onion and garlic powder, diced potatoes blanched, and top with cheese 20 minutes before you take it out of the oven. It's done when potatoes and squash are soft. 350 about 45 minutes. The squash is your bowl.

Brooke, just a tip! Those acorn squash seeds are amazing if you wash the slime off, spread them on a sheet pan, drizzle with a little oil and toss, then toast in the oven. Sometimes the hulls are a bit tough, but you can crack them open and just eat the kernel inside if you don't like the texture. Best free snack ever! I do this with any hard shell squash seeds, like butternut, hubbard, pumpkin, they all taste different, but are a great, and nutritious, snack.
I agree, Aldi's isn't cheap anymore. I hate to see that self checkout opened up. 2023 is weird
@@sonyafox3271 I didn't say self checkouts were weird. I said 2023 is weird. I just feel like the stores, gas stations, fast food restaurants all have us doing all of the work ourselves now. It also has the people who would have had those jobs looking for somewhere else to work. All I see is 8 empty checkout lanes and everyone lined up to check themselves out

I found my lodge skillet for $25 at BJs (like Costco in the north east) and the lid I found separate at a grocery store. The 12” lid was marked down as clearance for $5! That was a lucky find!

Dusty literally grunted at you that it was good lol and just kept on eating it. That's how you know when it's good.The squash was a good substitute for potatoes. It gives the creamy texture of potatoes. A very satisfied family you have there. Great job Brooke and welcome back home.

About a decade ago, I was in Sevierville at the Lodge factory outlet and they had a killer sale. Buy the medium size pan (factory second quality), and get the small and large for free. Turns out the medium's defect was uneven burn. I think they can probably tell by lot tests and/or thickness. It has been finicky over the years, but is the perfect size most of the time. I use the largest sparingly because just lifting it is a workout.
I made your beef stroganoff recipe tonight and it was the BEST I’ve ever had!!!! And I’m a fellow TN native, I’m watching this video, and recognize that Walmart from my Budweiser merchandising days! You’re not too far away! If you’re ever in the South Knoxville area, stop in at the United grocery outlet on Chapman Highway at the meat department, we have some GREAT deals on stuff, and ask for Michael, I’ll say hi to ya!
Hell broke or not these meals are helpful because it's pretty sad I spent $155 yesterday at Walmart and what little I got I couldn't believe how little we got for that so any ideas on how to stretch a dollar will help everybody right now!

Another thing about buying cast iron . It's cheaper in the hunting and camping section . The price is higher in the kitchen section up front .At Walmart
My sister has used the Italian seasoning pack for years on her chicken. She'll additionally shake a little Parmesan (from the shaker) on it. If you have it, it adds a nice touch.

We’ve been to the Smokies over 10 times and this weekend was the first time I ever went in the Lodge store! Next time I go I’m going to get me a bigger skillet.
A great quick budget pantry meal: To feed 2-4: Cook one cup of rice in 2 cups of water with a little oil ( optional) and a chicken bouillon cube( optional). Add one small can of drained tuna. Add one can of Campbells cream of mushroom soup ( need it to be name brand for flavor) . Mix with a spoon. If you want, add some canned peas or warmed up frozen peas. The peas change the flavor a little so test it both ways. This is good warm or cold and us a great snack or leftover meal. If you like it double the recipe and refrigerator leftovers. My kids absolutely loved this growing up. God bless!

I have my Mom’s cast iron frying pan and use it daily. She got it when she married back in 1950. I shopped at Williams and Sanoma and got an enamelled cast iron French oven from Staub for $99 a few years ago. It is the same quality as le creuset. I love lodge for being made in America. For enamelled cast iron, the only 2 brands who manufacture their pans outside of Asia is Staub and Le Crueset (they are enamelled in France.) That matters to me. Alas, even Lodge enamelled cast iron is made in Asia but I have a non enamelled Dutch oven by them, made in the USA. Love cast iron.

im so with you when it comes to washing poultry , the germs go every where , so they claim , so i do not wash mine either , i will like u cut out any parts that are questionable , or just dont look good ... but this meal looked so good , ty for sharing your tips , recipes and time with us Brooke!!
So happy I don't have to scrub my kitchen with bleach any more everytime I make chicken! I used to avoid chicken because of all the cleaning it took afterwards: knife, cutting board, counters, sinks, all before I could cook dinner and fix everything else!

Net carbs are just total carbs minus fiber, which cancels out carbs. (I'm diabetic, so I know this stuff.) :)

Just got home yesterday from vacation in Gatlinburg and there was a Food City near the cabin we stayed in. And we were all pleasantly surprised by how nice and stocked up it was and we got some great deals on the food we bought
Brooke every time you do these, it makes me soooo glad I take after my Mom and keep random crap sitting around that was on sale once. I don't know how i'd make $10 work with my grocery store.. i'd be taking the bus all over town for the whole day to keep in budget. My closest grocery store is so expensive.

Since the squash "sap" breaks you out, use a spoon to scoop the seeds and get a pack of what I call "cafeteria lady gloves" at dollar tree. 100 in a pack. You just need one for the holding hand. Great for meatloaf and such too.

Hair colour looks fabulous
Our grocery stores are grouped together like yours. Our aldi and Walmart are literally across the street from each other and we have a county market about a quarter mile from them. They are also set up like that in different areas of our city. We hit aldi first then walmart or county market depending on sales. The county market has a rewards program so you can electronically clip coupons and use a reward card to get deals. Unfortunately we only have 1 ruler foods which is a Kroger version of aldi, but, it's like 15 miles from us, so we rarely use it. I've been doing your $5 stock up for my pantry since winter is on it's way, I would never have thought of that without your videos.

Thats my kind of meal. I make sheet pan dinners a few times a week. I put them on the grill in good weather and the oven when its cold or rainy. Yummy, healthy, easy!!
