Cheap Chinese X Y Squareness Final checking and conclusions

  • So in this video I use a good precision triangle to check the squareness of the X and Y axis to each other.
The conclusion is that this table is square to within 0.0005" per inch of travel. Not great, but usable for the small parts that you can make on this table.
The usable X travel is 5", in the Y the travel is 2". I did not evaluate the top of the table, that is adjusted when mounting the table to the cutting machine and so is dependent on other factors.
My final conclusion is that this is, for the money, usable for many purposes in the hobby model shop. Does it make your cheap drill press into a super precise high end milling and drilling system, oh good heavens not. But for say cutting a slide valve for a model steam engine it will do. It could even be used to do the cross head ways on a small engine.

I don't bother with those because they are not built correct. I use an x, y table from Mico-Mark.

The whole goal here was to see what you can get for a low price and see if it can be made into something useful. This is going into my hobby area, where it will get used maybe once a month. Yes, these are not top of the line equipment.

Thanks for the tip but that may violate TH-cam creator rules.

Are you indicating off a pice of rolled steel? It certainly looks that way.

No, that was a precision triangle from a set. The one in question was the 45 degree one.

Well done, it's ashame about only having 2" on the Y axis, but maybe you can squeeze some more by mounting further away from the pillar. But if the side of the pillar is only 2" away from the centre line of the chuck, then that's your lot. Can you show us how the thing cuts as I might be interested in a small drill/mill. What is your next project?
    Are you into model making?
Maybe making a model, steam, locomotive out of brass brazed or or glued using off the shell wheels and motors or even a steam-powered something or other?😊

      Hi James
The limitation is in the saddle of the table. I will most likely make a video to show what is happening there, it's the range of movement of the block on it's screw from what I see.
I will be doing a cutting video on this. And yes, I do have a project in mind where I will most likely do some work on this table. I have a PM Oscillating steam engine that I bought in the 1980s that I need to put together. Most of that will be done on my lathe, but there are some things that I will use this table to complete.

@@oldfarthacks steam engines, great stuff, no one is making them anymore, it a dying art, I'll be watching mate.😁
