  • So after loading up out PARTS CANNON with a replacement alternator, let's install it in this hot rod Acura TSX and see if it cures all the problems at once!
Of course we must scientifically verify the repair to ensure no comebacks and a 100% satisfied customer :)
Link to Part 1 - DIAGNOSIS: • PUT DOWN THE PARTS CAN...
    Enjoy!

Son in laws 2006 TSX alternator died. Never worked on Japanese car but figured, cant be much different. I was pleasantly surprised how nicely the alt came out and went back in on 12 year old car. No broken or stripped bolts, not busted plastic clips even though they were a bit brittle. I took the fan assembly out and it gave enough room to comfortably remove the 3 retaining bolts on the alternator. This eliminated the need for any extreme extensions or anything. Such a straight forward job. Gotta move a few things around but for the most part a job that even a very inexperienced person could do. I would say to anyone be carefull with the tensioner...pulling back on that thing with "2 wenches" is a knucklebuster. My advice, TAKE YOUR TIME. Get a feel for the tensioner by just aligning your wench/wrenches and pull and release it a few times just to get a feel for it. Watch how it relives the tension off the belt. Make sure you are watching what that belt does. If you have to, take a picture of it before removing in case it flops off down below....you need to get it back on when you are done! If your belt looks even slightly worn, just grab a new one when doing this job but remember, it takes some patience putting a new one on and ensuring its around all those pulleys all the way down. also, while you are doing this job, clean the area up as you go when you get it out. Clean around the power steering reservoir, behind and underneath where the alt sits...take advantage of it since its right there and clean/replace and clamps etc you can see now that its out. Bottom line, the kid got an estimate of $450 to replace the alternator and I did it for him for $100 in parts (advanced auto had one $139 + $35 core but when you order online and pick up, got 25% off) so when all said and done about $100. THANK YOU for this video covering the basics and making the job easy.

I'm glad I saw this comment! I ended up having to change my alternator in below zero weather today in a parking lot and wasn't looking forward to it.
After reading through your comment, I just pulled the fan out right away and I could see how much room that left for me to get to the bolts on the bottom.
      Good call!

30 and 60 are healthy numbers on idle and heavy loads. The dreaded whine has gone and full marks for not ignoring the loose a/c connection. The extraction was reasonable straight forward as was the installation. The replacement Napa seemed to match ok and the bench performance data was adequate. All in all, a very successful repair job

Ivan I really like your videos - your approach to the diagnostic process has really helped me learn how to work on the new fangled cars. Been wrenching on my cars for over 20 years. I'm not an automotive mechanic, but I am in the plumbing/hvac trade. I would caution against doing that method with the ac hose bolt. I know it would have been extra work, but recovery and recharge would have made that a lot safer. I have a coworker with a permanently melted face because of a freon incident. You did it pretty well, but I wouldn't show viewers that method. Too easy for that to go wrong.

On a 6 cylinder 3.5 you have to do a lot of different stuff. You have to take the bracket off that holds the cable that runs to the alternator hook up. There's some weird hook up that runs through this cable patch that hooks up to the engine under the alternator, but the cable is connected to the back of the alternator. You have to take that off. Then you have to make sure you take both of those cowlings off, those black covers that cover the radiator and the side where the radiator fluid is and the window cleaner fluid. Then the little bottle that holds the radiator fluid, you have to take it off and take the bracket off that holds it in place. Then you can orient the alternator so you can slide it out of there. And remember exactly how you slid it out because that's the same position you have to use to put it back in there. Remember to start from the bottom when reinstalling the serpentine belt. If you are replacing the alternator I would go ahead and replace the belt.

That's one of my pet peeves too! Give me the ol' lever-operated heating system any day - at least they worked after a battery change! Friggin electronics. There is absolutely no reason to have to enter a code to have your heater work! I have a few words for that type of engineering, but they're all expletives ... 🤬 With the technology today, they absolutely could have the car tell you EXACTLY what the problem is, AND how to fix it. The fact they choose not to is what burns me up.
I also see they aren't making things any easier either - I get so frustrated when it takes 10 minutes of fiddling just to extract a component from the engine compartment. Rebuilding a Quadrajet, or adjusting dual points doesn't seem all that bad anymore!
Good diag in the previous vids - no parts cannon here! I doubt I'd ever be able to film something similar, since I'd be cussing non-stop the entire time about today's engineering ... 😁 Great vid as usual, Ivan. 👍

Regarding the information on the screen for alternator voltage issues, I'm not sure why the TSX does not show anything on the display. The Acura RL model 06-12 has such a feature in so much that it will tell you if there are charging issues with the alternator that will show up on the gauge info display screen. The last one I worked on had an overheated diode that set off the display, and in fact that model of alternator uses a 12 diode pack versus the more traditional six diode pack. I rebuilt it once the field windings and rotor windings tested good, a new diode pack, regulator and brush holder, plus a bearing repack and general cleaning got it fully back in order.

My '89 has touch screen menus and climate controls! What- you want every car to have cables & rods with slider controls? What fun would that be? ETCG was an Acura "Master Tech", saw him BEND AC line to R&R alternator. Good luck on that compressor manifold bolt !!! The O-ring is what holds the pressure- the bolt just holds the hose. Book Time is for Mary Poppins TV mechanic, never think about or show real world situations; 1 bolt could take hours or days, and involve multiple tools and money. GQ Public just wants it fixed, and some have farts in their head what it "should" be. Gunk and pressure wash, add glow dye, drive, come back next week and check. I hope you appreciate where you live- so peaceful, clean, & quiet.

    Smashing job ivan :-D
Giving birth to an alternator :-D, Smack it on the terminals to make it breathe lol.
Hopefully that car has no other lingering problems, other than the rocker gasket.
And yes it is far far better than the evil bmw, you were not stressed.
That refridgerent pipe was a bit worrying, i'm wondering if it had the wrong bolt in it from the start, but you stopped a guaranteed failure happening :-D.
I would want to flatten that exit hole and use a nut to screw the bolt into, i hate aluminium, too dam soft.

92 F150 alternator died, the bad rectifier ripple voltage would be noticeable as an extra humming noise on my am radio stations. As rpms increased the frequency of the noise would change, as heard thru the vehicles speakers

I'm trying to do this one now and for the life of me I cannot get a socket on to the bottom bolt. Can you tell me specifically what size/types of socket/extensions you used at 10:12? Much appreciated.
