FWIW, those bearings are made to a higher precision than any mass produced shotgun projectile.
Also, "unauthorized autobiography" has to be the most underrated comment in the history of OG's commentary on TH-cam.

Yes they are and are normally made of pretty hard steel. It doesn't surprise me they were still spinning. The performance was similar to what a wad cutter would do.

About the Applesauce, here is what I found:
It is, *technically,* a “non-Newtonian fluid”, which is, in the case of applesauce or ketchup, a fluid with solids suspended in it.
It is also full of sugar, so the liquid part is also a kind of syrup, I.E. thicker than water, thus providing more resistance to the forces imparted on it.

    • @screwfist
      @screwfist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Applesauce was around long before Newton invented the light bulb so of course its non Newtonian... But is applesauce magnetic? This shotgun round gives credence to the theory "space is infinitely curved" in physics, it is a round that has excessive spinning all through it. There are a lot of other things that apply but I'm sure you got the over-simplification. It's the whole idea behind the failed gyrojet weapon prototypes. Instead of jets in the round, it's a modified flywheel concept to better use the rifling effect. Nice.

I think it'll be relatively impossible to prevent the core from spinning at all. I think your idea would be great for a greater difference in rotational speed between the core and outer race, but there is still some friction between all the parts, and inertia always wins.

Hey what if you could put the shell in a field of spinning magnets at high rpms then quickly place the shell in a smooth bore and shoot it while the rotational mass is still spinning. That should make it a dead on slug due to the gyroscopic action and should theoretically fly straight

I have to wonder, while the outer bearings didn't spin faster than the core when leaving the barrel, if the outer slows down first once it hits the target, could the inner still have rotation that effects flight?

_THAT_ was probably one of the best 'improvised' shotgun slugs you've ever sent down-range. The accuracy was phenomenal! (I suspect that slug rotation was enhanced by using bearings...the label "gyro-slug" was *not* an exaggeration.)
Definitely worthy of an guest appearance in top-flight action movie (like a John Wick flick).

theoretically, the 3-bearing slug should fly straighter after an impact compared to a normal lead slug. My thinking is that the center rod will continue to spin on impact, as the bearing stop spinning during penetration. After the whole assembly exits the target, the spinning center rod would transfer some of its rotational energy to the bearings, causing the whole assembly to spin again. In fact, i believe the center rod will spin even faster on impact when the outer bearing stop due to conservation of rotational energy.
The video does show the bearing slug rotating after exiting the target. It would be interesting to compare this bearing slug to a solid lead slug of the exact same size (with the same sabot) and see if the lead slug is also rotating after exiting the target.

I replayed that last high speed shot of the ballistics gel at .25 playback speed.
    Gorgeous!
I was in hoping for a sonoluminescence flash, but not this time sadly.
I was thinking about the bearings running through the rifling. You'd have to reduce the friction between the inner & outer race so the inner core doesn't start to rotate.
The main source of friction will be from the viscosity of the grease. A viscous grease is used so it doesn't drip past the grease shield in use. But we only want it lubricated for a momentary use. Just enough to get it down range.
So if you wash out the thick grease it comes packed with and replace it with the lightest oil you can find. A 2 stroke oil & petrol mix at 40:1 is the lightest, cheapest lubricant I can think of. Applied & used before the heat at that scorching range evaporates the petrol leaving the gloopy 2 stroke oil behind.
Then, as the outer race spins up down the barrel there isn't enough friction to pass that rotation to the 8nner core.
It'd look great in the high speed shots having the outer rings spinning whilst the inner core isn't but I think it will lead to a drop off of accuracy because there's less mass rotating meaning the gyroscopic stabilisation will be reduced.
