Zombie Island brought Scooby-Doo back from the dead. It set the precedent for future films and shows to come. Beforehand, Scooby-Doo was on the brink because it was labeled as childish, outdated, and it did not fit the cliche as being a horror-comedy because outside of the original series, the “monsters” were always some freak in a costume. I remember seeing this movie for the first time and at first, I thought it was a better version because I liked seeing the zombies and just the overall theme felt like a horror film however you had the expectation the zombies were just humans in costumes…that perceptions changes the minute you see them appear out of nowhere and “It’s Terror Time” starts playing at the same time Fred literally DECAPITATES a zombie! At that moment, every single one of us kids realized that SCOOBY-DOO WAS BACK! 😊
Just a few notes: 1. Its funny how this movie was advertised with the tagline "This time, the monsters are REAL", and how most people remember this movie for that, when this isn't even the first, or even second, time this occurred. You have Scooby Doo meets the Boo Brothers, Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School, Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf (in this one, Shaggy was a monster, and he had to race other monsters), there was one episode of that Scooby Doo with guest stars, where they met the Addams Family, and then, of course, there was The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, whose entire premise, was Scooby and the gang chasing down actual spectres and demons, to put the back into the black magic box from whence they came. The movie you were talking about with the band is Scooby-Doo and the Witches Ghost. The band is called 'The Hex Girls'. One of their songs is called 'Earth, Wind, Fire and Air'
This and Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost were some of my favorites as a kid! I grew up watching a lot of the original cartoon as well. "I told you he was a bad guy!" really got me 😂
You wanna know one final kicker for this movie? On top of the darker feel, the fact the gang dealt with real monsters and magic, the awesome songs and the pretty cool art style and animation for 1998 standards, apparently if my sources are correct, this was originally going to be a Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron movie before some kind of behind the scenes executive changes got in the way, and now here we are. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island. What a ride.
This movie absolutely slaps, I loved Scooby Doo as a kid but as a lover of *actual* spooky stuff, always was a bit disappointed it was always a fake... but this was the scary story we needed. And every single song is an absolute BANGER! They are on my Halloween mix to this day.
I was always more a Ghoul School fan, but both of those classic movies have their merits. If they do watch the live-action one, they should definitely watch Monsters Unleashed, too.
This is one of my favourite Scooby Doo movies ever. 'Scooby Doo! Where's My Mummy?' is also a good one. The 'Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated' animated show is really worth the watch. So is the two live action movies, if only for nostalgia.
This movie revitalized Scooby-Doo. Then there was "Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost" that introduced the Hex Girls. Scooby Doo and the Alien Invaders was the last one to follow these movie's formula and then "What's New Scooby-Doo" that kicked scooby into the 2000s with more of a modern take with 2000s vibes and a loose timeline and that created a ton of movies that sort of followed the What's New Scooby Doo canon. The live actors movie then took place with SMG and Matthew Willard. Then, Mystery Inc did soft a reboot/alt universe/early years. It is a different take that follows a stricter timeline, it has a rocky start but gains it's footing eventually and is decent. "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" is GOATED! and will always be the true early years of the Scooby Gang.
I LOVE Mystery Incorporated. You're right it is a little darker, there is a wafty death count but it's a lot of fun. I also think it may have the best version of Fred in scooby doo.
Scooby doo on zombie island as far as i'm concerned, isn't connected to any of the actual show renditions, it is part of a series of movies that all came out in the 90s: Zombie island, The witch's ghost, alien invaders, and the cyber chase. You could also argue that the movies that came out in the early 2000s are part of this series as well: Monster of mexico, The legend of the vampire, Pirates Ahoy, and The loch ness monster
The best continuity I have seen starts with this movie including most 2000's movies and the show "What's Up Scooby Doo" (a couple characters of the movies reappear on the show)
34:56 My favorite Scooby Doo song of all time. Every since I saw this movie when I was a kid I listen to it almost everyday in October or just when it randomly pops in my head. 🤣🤣.
Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost, Cyberchase and Alien Invaders in my opinion are the best of the Scooby Doo moves :) I used to rent these from the library when they were on VHS tapes.
You know, after knowing the twist and rewatching, you notice that at no point are the zombies actually trying to be threatening. Even Morgan Moonscar, the most threatening zombie with his sword in hand, at no point holds his sword aggressively at Scoob and the gang. When he first rises up, he holds his sword unthreateningly off to the side, away from Shaggy and Scooby, like he has no intent to use it at all and just happens to be holding it. Instead, he keeps his empty hand upheld and outstretched towards them in a pacifying gesture the whole time, exactly the pose you'd take when your next intended act is to say 'relax, it's okay, I know I'm scary but I don't want to hurt you! I just wanna talk!' All the zombie 'attacks' on Scoob and the Gang really just consist of the zombies just lurching urgently towards them, moaning like they're trying to speak... because that's exactly what they're doing, trying desperately to warn Scoob and the Gang about the danger they're in, and literally too decayed to just spit it out. At one point a zombie even casually saves some of the Gang from quicksand by handing them a rope helpfully... that wasn't just a joke, the Zombies really are just trying to help all along. It's so subtle in foreshadowing, and SO well done.
And I love how this movie flips the standard formula on its head. The ones you think are the villains are actually allies (and in Moonscar’s case an antihero imo). While Moonscar and his crew did some awful things while they were living, most of the rest of them were just innocent victims of the werecats.
@terminallumbago6465 I would put Morgan Moonscar down as a reformed villain hero at this point: he knows, full well, that all of this is HIS fault, and he has tried, all this time, to try and stop the horrors he created in his barbarous cruelty. Having endlessly tried and failed, tried and failed, tried and failed, and watching so many people suffer and die and join him in tormented undeath because of his crimes and his failure has definitely had an effect on him... an effect made all the more potent by the keen knowledge that his own misery and the misery of all the others, is HIS SIN to bear, his ultimate burden and torment. Knowing it was all his fault He is not anymore the man he was when he drove those settlers into the Bayou. He hasn't been for a very long time. His suffering taught him the error of his ways long, long since. It's why he is so desperate to save the werecat's victims, every time. Why he leads the zombies to try and warn them. He is trying to put an end to the cycle of victimization he started. He is trying to atone.
@@GuukanKitsune But I like how this movie humanizes both sides in a way. Lena and Simone obviously had plenty of reason for wanting revenge, but the way they went about it was wrong, not just getting revenge on the pirates themselves but bringing untold numbers of innocent people into it, from those who just happened to be there to those they lured to the island for that specific purpose.
Honestly, while I do like this one, of all the ones where the monster is real, I'd say Cyberchase is my favorite. The laugh of the Phantom Virus is easily on my Top 5 best villain laughs.
It's part of a trio of movies, along with Witch's Ghost and Alien Invaders. Cyber Chase was made shortly after and is often grouped in with them. Mark Hamill os in Alien Invaders too. And the "vampire girls" you're thinking of are the Hex Girls, from Witch's Ghost, my personal favorite. You should watch them all.
The next Scooby Doo movie, Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost, features the female trio band, the Hex Girls and a couple of their songs, including "Earth, Wind, Fire, and Air" are featured. It also stars Tim Curry in a voice role.
A pup named scooby doo is such a cute and fun watch! But like you guys said, Mystery Incorporated does have some more darker themes! But unsurprisingly, you gotta get through some fun wacky adventures before ya get there 😉 100/10 recommend.
If you liked that movie, The scooby doo Witch ghost is in the same period of time, so they are alike. If you ever did the mystery inc it would be a dream come true. Its a very well written show and very dark for kids, but its amazing
Scooby-Doo Where are you?, The New Scooby-Doo Movies, The Scooby-Doo Show, Scooby-Doo and Scrapy-Doo (1969-1980). Scoopy-Doo and Scrapy-Doo, The New Scooby and Scrapy-Doo show, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. (1980-1991) Throughout the 90s; they only made one off movies. The first reboot didn't come until 2002.
The seeing this cast with weapons mention reminded me of the Scooby Doo show crossover with the CW show Supernatural where the gang does come across supernatural beings, actual murders, weapons, etc. It’s the crossover I never asked for yet have watched multiple times
At some point you guys should start Scooby Doo mystery Incorporated, arguably one of the darkest and best Scooby Doo TV shows ever. Honestly, a lot better than a pup named Scooby Doo.
The Witch's Ghost and Legend of the Vampire connects to the What's New Scooby Doo with the Hex Girls. There is also Scooby Doo and Guess Who and Be Cool Scooby Doo.
This is my favorite Scooby Doo movie, not only because I live in New Orleans, but this is the first time that they ever actually encountered the supernatural(Not including the 13 ghosts of Scooby Doo back in the 80's, which was a spin off). After this, then they started encountering more supernatural creatures, including in the live action movie and in Mystery Inc. and of course, the Spernatural/Scooby Doo crossover was great as well.
I used to love horror movies as a kid and not once did they ever give me nightmares, for some reason though my kid brain freaked out about this movie and I always had vivid nightmares after watching it. Guess we'll have to see if that happens again now that I'm 29 lmfao
Fun fact: here in Brazil the name of Shaggy is Salsicha, which means sausage, some people say that this name was chosen because of its posture and to relate him with food.
Okay I'm a Scooby fanatic, so this is so exciting to see more reactors do Scooby Doo! You definitely have to do the live action one. Matthew Lillard killed the role so much he became the permanent voice of Shaggy when the original voice actor passed. If you watch any other animated ones - definitely do Witch's Ghost or Cyber Chase
The Gang is supposed to be around their 20's in the Canon of this movie But, the stupid Return to Zombie Island Retconned the whole idea of them being Grown ups to being Teens again
All these years, they wanted something real. Something more than a guy in a costume. Well, they finally got it, and it nearly killed them! “Be careful what you wish for,” indeed!
I actually recently obtained a print for this movie which I was able to get signed by Billy West (Shaggy), Scott Innes (Scooby-Doo) and Jim Cummings (Jacques the ferryman and Morgan Moonscar). They were at the same convention. I rather hope to fill the print out with more signatures eventually. Though if I ante up the fee for a signature from Mark Hamill, I'll probably want it to be Star Wars related, and he's a pretty expensive signature.
>>>!>!>>> NO FUMPING WAY. Easily the best scooby doo movie. It holds up so well, the animation, the music, the story, the actual danger...I might just have to watch it tonight because nostaligia is hitting
My mom is from Baton Rouge Louisiana, and I grew up watching the original scooby show, so I loved as their first feature length movie they chose to highlight Louisiana.
Scooby doo has been rebooted a couple of times each show is usually 3 seasons are less. The original was called scooby doo where are you? It was made in 1969, henceforth the Scooby Doo Where Are You song, which played in the movie is the same song that was played in the original series just different singers. The first episode of this show that was aired on Tv was called Hassle in the Castle. The original lasted 3 seasons. the next show was called The New Scooby-Doo Movies. Although they weren't movies, about an hour-long episodes. Scooby doo would cross over with other characters including Batman, the three stooges, Sherlock Holmes, and other famous characters. This one was made in 1972. Though out the 70s there were a couple of Scooby shows that came out including The Scooby-Doo Show, Scooby, and Scappy Doo, and finally in 1979 The New Scooby-Doo and Scappy Doo Show. Finally, in 1985 they made a short series called Scooby doo and the 13 Ghosts (which also has a movie many years later called The Curse Of the 13th Ghost.) A Pup Named Scobby doo was a prequel to the original show and was made in 1988. Then in 1989 though 2002, they made movies including Zombie Island, The Alien Invaders, and The Cyber Chase to name a few. Then in 2002, they made What's New Scooby-Doo? After that it was Scooby Doo and Shaggy get a clue in 2006 Then Finally in 2010 Mystery Incorporated was made which really goes deep into the lore and definitely A darker take on the show. Though out the years there have been more movies before and after the early 2000s. In 1988, a classic called The Reluctant Werewolf, and in 2020 another prequel movie called Scoob. Yet this is the order of the shows and the movies. Besides the live-action ones. Also, it may have not shown much in this movie but everyone can understand Scooby but yes he is Shaggy's dog.
So was Snakebite being voiced by the Joker, Mark Hamill. But a huge surprise is that Beau was voiced by Liquid Snake/McDonnell Benedict "Master/Kazuhira" Miller, Cam Clarke in this movie, and I was surprised that it was released in the same year as Metal Gear Solid was.
@Sorta Stupid Reacts what made this movie so special was the fact that this is the first time in the Scooby-Doo franchise where the main villains of the franchise weren't just a criminal in a costume, this was the first time real monsters were introduced into the Scooby-Doo franchise. These Scooby-Doo movies zombie island, witches ghost, alien invaders, and cyberchase are all part of the same universe in witches ghost there is actually an easter egg from this movie. These movies are a great animated saga that has a special place in my childhood 😊 zombie island and witches ghost I still have the VHS 📼 tapes of them to this day.
To be Honest, he was right there was a movie based on a band, Hex Girls. In the movie called, "Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost"(1999). I find myself loving that movie more with that band, but this movie ranks up very high and close to me. The Scooby Doo Kiss Movie for being #1 for me.
The scary moments of this movie are rather reminiscent of some of Disney's older films like Snow White or Pinocchio. The memory of the sheer terror I felt seeing Simone and Lena into werecats for the first time is still vivid since I was young. And the songs in this rocked.
I had this movie on VHS and watched it regularly. Still stands as my favorite Scooby-Doo movie ever. I know others pick some different ones, but this one actually made a real attempt to be scary!

3. If you haven't tried gumbo before, you owe it to yourself to try it at least once.
The movie you were talking about with the band is Scooby-Doo and the Witches Ghost. The band is called 'The Hex Girls'.
One of their songs is called 'Earth, Wind, Fire and Air'
"Chased into a hole by 1 third of a BLT" is one of my favorite lines of all time
Mine too, that line is hilarious and quotable
Scooby: sorry
Velma: don't worry Scooby that's fine
**I want a direct response**
The "Dommy Mommy Goth Band" shows up in the sequel 1999 movie " Scooby Doo and the witches ghost"
Under the name "the hex girls'
They're also the Hex Girl's in Mystery Incorporated
This and Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost were some of my favorites as a kid! I grew up watching a lot of the original cartoon as well. "I told you he was a bad guy!" really got me 😂
Just the fact that they are interested in the idea if watching Mystery Inc. fills me with so much excitement!
The band was called The Hex Girls. And yes I would let them put a spell on me. There is a part 2 of this that was released fairly recently
The part 2 was A HUGE Letdown
Terror time will forever be the best song for a movie ever.
Definitely need to see the live-action one, for good or bad.
My personal favorite classic is "Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf"
For sure !!
I was always more a Ghoul School fan, but both of those classic movies have their merits.
If they do watch the live-action one, they should definitely watch Monsters Unleashed, too.
@connorr8071 oh yeah. Ghoul school is a fun one for sure. That's a great pick.
I enjoyed the "13 👻 of Scooby-Doo".
The Ghoul School and Monsters Unleashed for me😆
Like they said on the trailers _"THIS_ time… the monsters are real"
This one and Witches Ghost are my ultimate favorites from Scooby Doo!
I am so conflicted on whether I want you guys to see A Pup Named Scooby-Doo or Mystery Incorporated. They're both SO GOOD!
I’m partial to the Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby-Doo myself
The best continuity I have seen starts with this movie including most 2000's movies and the show "What's Up Scooby Doo" (a couple characters of the movies reappear on the show)
@@Don_LUSH I completely agree
34:56 My favorite Scooby Doo song of all time. Every since I saw this movie when I was a kid I listen to it almost everyday in October or just when it randomly pops in my head. 🤣🤣.
I still can't get over the fact that Beau the gardener is voiced by Liquid Snake 🤣
Yeah, I didn't know that it was also released at the same Month MGS was released.
Zombie Island, Witch’s Ghost, Cyberchase and Alien Invaders in my opinion are the best of the Scooby Doo moves :) I used to rent these from the library when they were on VHS tapes.
This is the best Scooby-Doo movie. 10/10
This movie, camp scare (with wrestlemania right behind) are my most nostalgic scooby doo movies, anytime I rewatch them I don't get tired of them.
I love this movie simply because it has the best chase scene song in Scooby Doo history "It's Terror Time Again" 💕🎶🎸🤘🏻
Wow! This was something I wasn't expecting you guys to watch. Also, this movie was so creepy.
This is the top tier of Scooby Doo
This was the first Scooby Doo movie I ever saw and it made such an impression that I still watch it whenever I can.
Now this is the real scooby doo
I just wanna talk!'
All the zombie 'attacks' on Scoob and the Gang really just consist of the zombies just lurching urgently towards them, moaning like they're trying to speak... because that's exactly what they're doing, trying desperately to warn Scoob and the Gang about the danger they're in, and literally too decayed to just spit it out. At one point a zombie even casually saves some of the Gang from quicksand by handing them a rope helpfully... that wasn't just a joke, the Zombies really are just trying to help all along.
It's so subtle in foreshadowing, and SO well done.
It’s amazing ❤
Huh. How about that.
Knowing it was all his fault
He is not anymore the man he was when he drove those settlers into the Bayou.
Zombie Island actually scared me as a kid lol
The Voodoo doll melting bit messed me up as a kid
Honestly, while I do like this one, of all the ones where the monster is real, I'd say Cyberchase is my favorite. The laugh of the Phantom Virus is easily on my Top 5 best villain laughs.
It's part of a trio of movies, along with Witch's Ghost and Alien Invaders. Cyber Chase was made shortly after and is often grouped in with them. Mark Hamill os in Alien Invaders too. And the "vampire girls" you're thinking of are the Hex Girls, from Witch's Ghost, my personal favorite. You should watch them all.
For equal creepiness, I think you need to go for Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost, but I think my personal favorite was the Monster of Mexico.
Yes! That is high key my favorite!
Oh I LOVE Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island!!! That was one of my two favorite Scooby-Doo movies growing up.
The live action movies along with zombie island, witches ghost, alien invaders, and the cyber chase are the best Scooby Doo movies ever made
Oh my gosh yes! Zombie island! Back when the scooby doo movies had guts to be intense and sometimes dark! especially this movie! 😄
At some point you guys should start Scooby Doo mystery Incorporated, arguably one of the darkest and best Scooby Doo TV shows ever. Honestly, a lot better than a pup named Scooby Doo.
There's a Scooby Doo and Supernatural cross over. The character Dean really loves Scooby Doo.
Ever since the show from 1969 every member of Mystery Inc have been able to understand Scooby.
I think it was cause your kid mind was not expecting it to be scary so it hadn’t set up defenses
Oh man, my possibly favorite scooby film and probably my favorite film entirely as a child. I’ll look forward to this.
The Gang is supposed to be around their 20's in the Canon of this movie
But, the stupid Return to Zombie Island Retconned the whole idea of them being Grown ups to being Teens again
Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated is one of my favorite newish Scooby shows
Fun fact they answer the reason scooby can talk but other animals and dogs can’t in one of the movies although I can’t remember which one
Omg!!! I love this movie!!! This is literally my childhood!!!!🥰🥰🥰 one of the best Scooby Doo movies ever made!!!
>>>!>!>>> NO FUMPING WAY. Easily the best scooby doo movie. It holds up so well, the animation, the music, the story, the actual danger...I might just have to watch it tonight because nostaligia is hitting
This movie gave much such nightmares as a lil kid😂
Did you know that Jim Cummings voiced The Boat Guy (Jacques) and Mark Hamill voiced the Angry Old Guy (Snakebite) with the Hog.
Yes but who voice Morgan moonscar
Yes but who voice Morgan moonscar
"Let him cook"
"I told you he was a bad guy!"
Fucking amazing payoffs within a commentary 😂😂
My mom is from Baton Rouge Louisiana, and I grew up watching the original scooby show, so I loved as their first feature length movie they chose to highlight Louisiana.
Mystery Incorporated is Scooby Doo Shippuden and it's rad.
The Scooby Doo movie that I always watched on dvd/ tv was the one with aliens.
This is the boost I needed to finish out my week. Heck yes!
Nobody:
Me: CAUSE ITS TERROR TIME AGAIN
FYI Ms. Lenoir was voiced by same actress who voiced Catwoman from 1992's Batman TAS. That was sick as hell when I watched that movie back in 1998.
I won't be able to watch, but please continue with more Scoobs!! My favorite cartoon growing up. I'd love to see y'all react to the live action movie😄
you guys, this movie was so freaking atmospheric growing up, this and cyber chase are de facto the best scooby doo movies.
The sequel to this was kinda my favorite when I was younger I highly recommend it to you guys
This movie was apparently supposed to be a swat katz movie that was repurposed for scooby doo. Pretty cool.
The music for these movies did not have to go so hard. 🎉
Even if you got a stocked pantry, you still have to shop to get stuff you can't keep long term, or gets used up. Milk, eggs, butter, and so on.
Oh my god Ruff gets it pup named Scooby Doo is goated
The vampire girl band was the Hex Girls, and they debuted in The Witch's Ghost.
I second the Mystery Incorporated recommendation. It is my favorite iteration of Scooby-Doo. It has a serialize narrative and it get very dark.
“Earth wind fire and air” lyrics from a song in the second movie Witches Ghost
0:55 Y’all need to dive deeper into this rabbit hole. Zombie Island and the Loch Ness freak are my favorite Scooby Doo movies.
6:32 What’s new Scooby Doo and Mystery Incorporated are the best.
OMG THIS WAS MY FAVORITE SCOOBY DOO MOVIE GROWING UP!!! (That and alien invaders.)
Scooby Doo and Supernatural. They actually did a crossover. Its *glorious*.
