@@srwaan He has +5 for his dex, and expertise as mentioned above means he doubles his +5 proficiency bonus. So that altogether gives him +15. Reliable Talent as a rogue means he can't roll less than a 10, so that means his minimum stealth check is 25, and max with a nat 20 is 35, so when Pass without a Trace is up, his minimum roll is 35 and his max is 45.
Not gonna lie. When they start putting pieces together that they have had for literal years at around an hour and a half in. I got chills, looked at Matt Mercer, and saw the true spark of insanity and genius in his eyes.
Honestly, I found it disappointing that they took this long to piece things together and still make poor guesses. The ones with the most notes made the dumbest guesses.

Ziggurats scattered through the whole campaign, haunted by villains, teasing at a significance unrevealed through hundreds of hours. It's almost as if Matt was working on a....pyramid scheme.
Doty's second death really illustrates the problem with the D&D companion systems - they don't want to give you a companion that's approximately as strong as you are, because that will make you twice as powerful as everyone else in your party. So instead they give you one like Doty, or Trinket, who is decently balanced for the group of players, but can't survive in a high level combat situation. The only reason Trinket is still around is that Vex rarely brings him out, and if he drops to zero he pops back into the gem. If he was in every fight and had a chance of dying, she'd be going through bears like they were single-use disposables.
Which is why, if you want a companion, you should just roll & play two characters. That's what we do in our campaigns (though admittedly we're a fairly small group).
You'll have to make that call depending on your group. Our group isn't very competitive, so if someone wants to go to the effort of keeping track of two characters, they're welcome to. And like I said, we're a small group, 2 - 3 players plus the DM, so it's nice to have someone play an extra character to round the party out a little more.
Agreed. It can also work in a larger party depending on the setting and the feel of the game. I was in a game once with a party made up of two rogues, a bard, a wizard, a cleric, and my druid. Aside from the fact that the ceric was armored we were all pretty squishy. I was allowed a particularly powerful animal companion due to plot reasons and it was the closest thing to a melee tank our party had at our early levels.
I loved that when Scanlan and Vex never really saw eye to eye, with Sam not liking Trinket and such, Tary and Vex were nearly best friends. Really heartwarming.
The two Gods have very different relationships with their followers. Pike willingly follows Sarenrae and is extremely faithful and good. The Matron of Ravens forced Vax into servitude and he's been scared about what that really entails ever since.
Cassandra's reaction broke my heart. I can't imagine hearing that one of the individuals that ruined your entire life and made you a victim of their power was alive again.
And then Percy left the room without even hugging her or holding her hair while she vomited. I don't know what it is with him and Cass, but around her he behaves like an emotionally stunted bastard. Darn it. It just occurred to me. Keyleth is going to live for thousands of years. She even commented on it a very long time ago. She's going to lose every one of her friends. All except one. The Sun Tree is going to live practically forever. Of course she's making friends with the tree. It's the only friend that she will be able to keep over the course of that very long life.

I was annoyed at times that Ashley was always lost, plot-wise, during earlier times. Though I knew why (Blindspot!), it didn't make it less time-consuming that she had to be reminded what was going on all the time!😅 Pike is a crazy-good, necessary member of V.M, who helps add some needed sanity to the group! It's fun seeing her contribute.
Well he said they were temples of Ioun in the past. And given they were preoccupied with continent devouring dragons before, it's not surprising they didn't dig deeper until the cultists appeared.
They missed an opportunity to collect information in the Sphinx' temple. I think there was some important info. on the relief carvings there, but they were in too much of a self-imposed hurry. Then the sand trap closed the place off, which was unfortunate
In Matt's world, he has stated several times now, Vecna is not a God. He is a powerful necromancer who was trying to become a god, but was stopped. However, due to his renown, he has amassed followers enough to rival a minor deity.

it did, but while these guys are actors, it isn't fair to always assume the characters are the same. Taliesin's speech was amazing, but sadly Percy's didn't come out as good. That's why the die exists!
In-universe, I think he probably failed because the whole speech was based on a bluff. Animus was severed from Orthax during Percy's resurrection ritual

Makes it a little more difficult to catch what they’re all saying sometimes, but I love the energy and the vibes of it

Matt Byers to be fair, he has probably spent countless hours thinking about the nuances of it. As someone trying to think up a campaign, it is in my head 24/7, evolving and being run over and over. Matts world is so amazing though, so much work put in, I d hope to emulate just an 8th of it.
In my campaigns I remember details way better that what I had for dinner yesterday (or, on one occasion, how much tea did I ever drank in that session). I think it's because of a mix between the love and hard work you put in the creative process of making the world up and the boon to the memory you get for writing it down and comparing it to previous details to see if it fits.

That's something I actually really like about the new setup. You have a clear sense of space, and where everyone is to each other. It makes it so you can much more easily tell who someone is actually looking at when they're talking across the table, and that adds a lot to the watchability.
Campaign 1 The beginning: We are friends and we like to cuddle! The middle: Woah, the viewers are paying a lot of attention to our cuddling. We are now shy about cuddling on camera. The end: We are tired of holding back from cuddling. Besides, the viewers approve. Spoilers!!!! Campaign 2 The beginning: Our characters are strangers, so it doesn't feel natural to cuddle much. The middle: Ok, we're family again. Resume cuddling. The pandemic: #$%$^%$#%&@!~%&*#&$% @$3 %$^% @$#%!!!!!!! Ok, at least we can be in the same room.

For all the shit they get for not planning they dont get enough praise when they improvise with such fluidity its beautiful. Like with the cultist. Two dead, third one captured with such elegance (Keyleth to Grog, Percy with the shackles). Nobody was hogging the spotlight, all of the team did something and they managed that situation masterfully. The interrogation itself was very good as well, with even Ashley going to a dark spot.

I was specifically referring to everything being panned hard right. Throughout the episode, there is a bit more room noise than usual and the levels are a little uneven at times, most likely due to the new setup. It will probably take a few weeks to get all of the bugs worked out.

She went fire elemental in the last fight. She should have just hit the rock in human form. Wild Shape is also a magic ability. The ceiling was 50ft up per Matt from the last fight. Missing she didn't have a wild shape to use, she should have been transformed back into Keyleth as soon as she was 180ft away from the orb and died in the wall.

Sure, Vecna is bigger and stronger and all that, but I feel like the BWs have always been there, hunting the group down. Vecna only knew/cared about VM hot less than a week in total. They didn't just jump in. 1)They brought in NPC researchers to confirm it's a portal of some kind. 2) They shot an Oracle arrow into it to see that there was indeed another side. 3) They did a control test of a body without a necklace, and a body with a necklace and saw there was a difference. And 4) They checked to see that the orb reacted to them wearing a necklace when they got close.
Watching in 2002 after a character in High Rollers (tomb of annihilation mini series) stuck his head in one and insta-died. Don’t stick your head in a sphere of annihilation.
Sam’s one man show is amazing and hilarious to watch, but it’s also funny to think about the fact that Matt does this All The Time, sometimes with up to 5 NPC in the same room engaged in a conversation, and it’s almost never remarked on. I don’t mean to compare Sam and Matt, it’s different for PCs in many ways, but Sam doing it kinda just puts it into perspective what must be constantly going on in Matt’s head (not only several NPCs but different plot lines to keep track of)

I'm rewatching this after watching C2 E100, and it's funny to see how excited they are to be all at the same table when in the most recent episode they were excited to be all in the same room again, even if they were all at separate tables
They should have defenitely talked to Allura before going in. They would have known far more about the shadowfell that way. But who cares, this makes it more dangerous and interesting.
honestly 95% of their info gathering is flavor text, and they have high level enough gear and magic to improvise solutions to any problem they may encounter. Shadow fell is just the evil equivalent to the feywild. Nothing else needs top be learned.

Everytime I see people going on about how they should have consulted Allura I remember that they had Realmseer Eskil Ryndarien's (yes I looked him up) notes on the Shadowfell. He's a more accomplished mage so I really feel that the whole premise is preposterous.
Wow. this episode was insane story wise. Watching small story threads that have been visible this whole time suddenly connect together into this one huge event was so satisfying.
Coming back and constantly getting the popping microphones and un even sound (microphone exploding whenever someone laughs and can't hear whispers) makes you appreciate how much production quality has improved.

I love that Matt created the Chalice Merchant because of Taliesen's off-hand joke, then named him Larry because of Liam's off-hand joke. It was a great moment of a DM playing off the players to create something on the spot.
It would likely go as well as the Nat 20/Nat 1 situation. Lionel really doesn't deserve any of the possible negatives as the issue is really between Grog and Scanlan. And I really hate Grog take on the Deck. The first boon was a mistake and Grog shouldn't know about it. A bad fix on Matt's end. Also Grog just brushes off a curse as a headache. Ugh!
@@MorinehtarTheBlue To be fair, Grog has little experience with curses, and an intellect of 6. To put it in perspective, he was once polymorphed into a giant Eagle which was smarter than him. Matt also isn’t interpreting the curse as being constantly up front or attention grabbing. It’s just there.

Unfortunately, that's the curse of being the DM. If you cuddle with any of your players, they can see what's behind the separator, and it messes everything up.
I've been piecing this together right along with them and when I realized it a hot second before they did, I got literal chills. Hats off to Matt for this one. 14 episodes to go . . .

Id rather have a player who pays attention to the DM while world building, the amount of mistakes she has just due to her not listening when Matt is building is pathetic. He constantly has to pull punches for her and argue rules with her cause of that very thing, not even accounting for her limited knowledge of her own spells on a character its her job to play for years lol.
she is the absolute best at note-taking and then subsequently putting all the dots together. I would love a player like that at my table and I strive to be like her when it comes to note-taking. she should teach a seminar on note-taking

They've made a million jokes like this every time someone rolls 40 or over on stealth. The comments are also filled with people doing the same.
Not gonna lie. When they start putting pieces together that they have had for literal years at around an hour and a half in. I got chills, looked at Matt Mercer, and saw the true spark of insanity and genius in his eyes.

That's like when Taliesin tosses out occasional "groaner" jokes, and NO ONE in the room acknowledges them.
Doty's second death really illustrates the problem with the D&D companion systems - they don't want to give you a companion that's approximately as strong as you are, because that will make you twice as powerful as everyone else in your party.
So instead they give you one like Doty, or Trinket, who is decently balanced for the group of players, but can't survive in a high level combat situation.
The only reason Trinket is still around is that Vex rarely brings him out, and if he drops to zero he pops back into the gem. If he was in every fight and had a chance of dying, she'd be going through bears like they were single-use disposables.
Yeah. Clone a Druid or Paladin with guidance and you're on freaking fire.
Which is why, if you want a companion, you should just roll & play two characters. That's what we do in our campaigns (though admittedly we're a fairly small group).

You'll have to make that call depending on your group. Our group isn't very competitive, so if someone wants to go to the effort of keeping track of two characters, they're welcome to. And like I said, we're a small group, 2 - 3 players plus the DM, so it's nice to have someone play an extra character to round the party out a little more.
Agreed. It can also work in a larger party depending on the setting and the feel of the game. I was in a game once with a party made up of two rogues, a bard, a wizard, a cleric, and my druid. Aside from the fact that the ceric was armored we were all pretty squishy. I was allowed a particularly powerful animal companion due to plot reasons and it was the closest thing to a melee tank our party had at our early levels.
I loved that when Scanlan and Vex never really saw eye to eye, with Sam not liking Trinket and such, Tary and Vex were nearly best friends. Really heartwarming.

The two Gods have very different relationships with their followers. Pike willingly follows Sarenrae and is extremely faithful and good. The Matron of Ravens forced Vax into servitude and he's been scared about what that really entails ever since.

TFW Matt Mercer has ziggurats everywhere and only after 80% of the entire campaign you finally figure out the widespread significance they play.
Well he said they were temples of Ioun in the past. And given they were preoccupied with continent devouring dragons before, it's not surprising they didn't dig deeper until the cultists appeared.
They missed an opportunity to collect information in the Sphinx' temple. I think there was some important info. on the relief carvings there, but they were in too much of a self-imposed hurry. Then the sand trap closed the place off, which was unfortunate

In Matt's world, he has stated several times now, Vecna is not a God. He is a powerful necromancer who was trying to become a god, but was stopped. However, due to his renown, he has amassed followers enough to rival a minor deity.

Matt Byers to be fair, he has probably spent countless hours thinking about the nuances of it. As someone trying to think up a campaign, it is in my head 24/7, evolving and being run over and over. Matts world is so amazing though, so much work put in, I d hope to emulate just an 8th of it.
In my campaigns I remember details way better that what I had for dinner yesterday (or, on one occasion, how much tea did I ever drank in that session). I think it's because of a mix between the love and hard work you put in the creative process of making the world up and the boon to the memory you get for writing it down and comparing it to previous details to see if it fits.

That's something I actually really like about the new setup. You have a clear sense of space, and where everyone is to each other. It makes it so you can much more easily tell who someone is actually looking at when they're talking across the table, and that adds a lot to the watchability.

For all the shit they get for not planning they dont get enough praise when they improvise with such fluidity its beautiful.

Vecna's one of the most powerful beigns in the DnD universe, how how how I'm so afraid
I grew to love Tary and his wonderful character growth, but god I missed Scanlan! He's so funny and reckless and comes up with the wildest ideas!

I was specifically referring to everything being panned hard right. Throughout the episode, there is a bit more room noise than usual and the levels are a little uneven at times, most likely due to the new setup. It will probably take a few weeks to get all of the bugs worked out.

It's been tough with COVID happening and even before. Hella lonely living on my own and unable to make friends at work due to just being there freshly before quarantines were mandatory. Been really missing Critical Role these past weeks/months not gonna lie its been hard but I'm thankful to be in a better spot than when I was from OP. She went fire elemental in the last fight. She should have just hit the rock in human form. Wild Shape is also a magic ability. The ceiling was 50ft up per Matt from the last fight. Missing she didn't have a wild shape to use, she should have been transformed back into Keyleth as soon as she was 180ft away from the orb and died in the wall.

@@danielbosshard7768 Well, it's been a long term frustration for many viewers, but I've come to the point of constructive criticism when I say she seems to have stopped drinking so much on air during the second campaign and that has really helped the issue of her lack of concentration, failure to listen and impulsive bad decisions in game.

Sure, Vecna is bigger and stronger and all that, but I feel like the BWs have always been there, hunting the group down. Vecna only knew/cared about VM hot less than a week in total. The BWs have always been a thorn in the side of VM. I like you comment, sorry if it sounded like I was disagreeing with you.

They didn't just jump in. 1)They brought in NPC researchers to confirm it's a portal of some kind. 2) They shot an Oracle arrow into it to see that there was indeed another side. 3) They did a control test of a body without a necklace, and a body with a necklace and saw there was a difference. And 4) They checked to see that the orb reacted to them wearing a necklace when they got close.
Watching in 2002 after a character in High Rollers (tomb of annihilation mini series) stuck his head in one and insta-died. Don’t stick your head in a sphere of annihilation.

Sam’s one man show is amazing and hilarious to watch, but it’s also funny to think about the fact that Matt does this All The Time, sometimes with up to 5 NPC in the same room engaged in a conversation, and it’s almost never remarked on. I don’t mean to compare Sam and Matt, it’s different for PCs in many ways, but Sam doing it kinda just puts it into perspective what must be constantly going on in Matt’s head (not only several NPCs but different plot lines to keep track of)

They should have defenitely talked to Allura before going in. They would have known far more about the shadowfell that way. But who cares, this makes it more dangerous and interesting.
honestly 95% of their info gathering is flavor text, and they have high level enough gear and magic to improvise solutions to any problem they may encounter. Shadow fell is just the evil equivalent to the feywild. Nothing else needs top be learned.

Everytime I see people going on about how they should have consulted Allura I remember that they had Realmseer Eskil Ryndarien's (yes I looked him up) notes on the Shadowfell. He's a more accomplished mage so I really feel that the whole premise is preposterous.

Watching small story threads that have been visible this whole time suddenly connect together into this one huge event was so satisfying.
Coming back and constantly getting the popping microphones and un even sound (microphone exploding whenever someone laughs and can't hear whispers) makes you appreciate how much production quality has improved.

It would likely go as well as the Nat 20/Nat 1 situation. Lionel really doesn't deserve any of the possible negatives as the issue is really between Grog and Scanlan. And I really hate Grog take on the Deck. The first boon was a mistake and Grog shouldn't know about it. A bad fix on Matt's end. Also Grog just brushes off a curse as a headache. Ugh!
@@MorinehtarTheBlue To be fair, Grog has little experience with curses, and an intellect of 6. To put it in perspective, he was once polymorphed into a giant Eagle which was smarter than him. Matt also isn’t interpreting the curse as being constantly up front or attention grabbing. It’s just there.

Id rather have a player who pays attention to the DM while world building, the amount of mistakes she has just due to her not listening when Matt is building is pathetic. He constantly has to pull punches for her and argue rules with her cause of that very thing, not even accounting for her limited knowledge of her own spells on a character its her job to play for years lol.
Marisha was the note taking queen of campaign 2.
she is the absolute best at note-taking and then subsequently putting all the dots together. I would love a player like that at my table and I strive to be like her when it comes to note-taking. she should teach a seminar on note-taking
I *still* think Percy's hell-pact should be void on Ipkesh's side because Doty didn't make it with them (as either an ally or belonging, he was supposed to be brought with them, unspoiled)
