Warrior vs HBK could’ve been the original over-sell fest 9 years before HBK vs Hogan.
If Shawn Michaels wasn't as childish as he was and could tone down his pathetic antics, given his level of talent he could have been just as good an opponent for Warrior if not better than Rick Rude!
No way '96 Shawn would've had the match. He would've lost his smile a few months early if Vince had booked it.

Imagine the tag team combination of the Ultimate Warrior and Ahmed Johnson. The matches would be abysmal and promos would be comedy gold. Ahmed Johnson incoherently mumbling angrily and Warrior snorting and grunting with destrucity.
I'd take both over the entire AEW roster especially over that guy who thinks he's great in his own mind. What's his name? I think it's Cody something.
I've always thought of Ahmed Johnson as the black version of the Ultimate Warrior. Two terrible workers who couldn't cut a promo who got a huge push because of their physiques.

Vader was supposed to win at Survivor Series and drop the belt back to Shawn at the Rumble. That's what I've heard at least.

It was horrible how they used Vader after that Summerslam. He should of had a much better run then he did.
Actually the original plan was for Vader to win the belt at Summerslam and drop it back to HBK at Survivor Series with Warrior being one of the challengers around September-October '96. HBK would've feuded with Camp Cornette in the interim. But with Vince's hard on for Shawn and Shawn having creative control as champion, Vader's WWF career was flushed down the drain after the match. Thus changing the whole storyline and replacing Vader with Sid, because Shawn saw Sid as a safe worker.
If Shawn thought Vader was stiff in the ring I can't imagine how much he would have bitched working with Warrior.
Warrior wasn't as stiff as Vader though. More like clumsy and no selling is what Warrior was.

Interesting question. I had actually heard rumours that the Sid run in late 1996 was actually for Vader where he was meant to win the title and then drop it back to Shawn at the Royal Rumble but due to weight and a couple of other issues, probably political, the company changed plans and went with Sid. They talk a little bit about it on Bruces show where they say Warrior was gone, Shawn didn't want to work with Vader and Sid was back who had everything that Vince loves.

The only truly useful role for UW long term would have been in the Ultimate Maniacs with Savage. Savage can fill in the gaps while UW brings the high bursts in a tag-team setting. Too bad UW screwed that up too by getting fired in 1992.

What happened?
Cornette out-of-touch and doesn't understand modern pro wrestling. AEW had more success in its first event than SMW and Cornette had in five years, combined and doubled. Cornette fanboys are one of the worst sets of fans currently in pro wrestling.
Jericho, at some point, will have to face reality.

Say what you want to say about the The Ultimate Warrior. He's my idol forever, not bcuz he was the best wrestler bcuz he wasn't, but his Character was legendary and so cool to us as kids. Like it or not THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR put his thump print on professional wrestling. An that was also said by the Great Mean Gene.

Shawn Michaels and Warrior in a one on one match... that's about the only thing I could think of that outweighs Hulk Hogan's ego.
at least back then the rumors were that Michaels was originally supposed to have the big rematch against Vader at the Survivor Series, with the latter winning the belt. which is also why the December In Your House ppv was called "It's Time" which seems like an apparent use of Vader's catchphrase (and it was given some time before. because of the time of the ppv, Vader was out injured)

At the 1990 Royal Rumble, Shawn Michaels entered the Rumble only to get thrown out by the Warrior after about ten seconds. Probably a moment Michaels doesn't want to remember!

Would it be wrong to say I liked sycho sid over Ultimate Warrior? Warrior had that awesome entrance and energy, but match wise...eh. Promo wise I never knew what he was talking about. Sid had a cool entrance, he could cut a promo, he was alright in the ring. Sid could play a bad guy or a good guy. Powerbomb was a cool move.
Maybe it was because I 9-10 years old at the time but I thought Sid was cool especially in WCW.

Arn tried to stab Sid, not the other way around.
They both stabbed each other with scissors, Vicious stabbed Anderson twenty times, while being stabbed four times himself. also Vader saved Sids life by using his thumb to plug one of the wounds Sid had in his stomach till the ambulance turned up, the whole story is mental.
But Sid is the one who went to Arn's hotel room looking for a fight. They were both in the wrong in different ways.

So it's pretty safe to say the destiny of the warrior was sealed and the product was going to proceed as it did.
5 years before this in 1991 at a house show in Fresno it was to be Ultimate Warrior vs Undertaker in a casket match.....Warrior no showed and Sid Justice filled in for him. Who knew years later it would be Sid again filling in for him. LOL!
Sid left in '92 because he didn't want to lose to Warrior at house shows. And Warrior was supposed to win the feud against Sid on TV. Sid would've lost his momentum and wouldn't amount to much after that. So Sid was smart for leaving actually.
How does Jim forget why it was Michaels vs. Sid at Survivor Series...when it was a result of an angle that he was involved in? It was supposed to be a Michaels vs. Vader rematch but Shawn wouldn’t do another match with Vader.
I believe everything Jim is saying but it would be impossible for a character like the warrior to NOT routinely be in the title picture more often than not . At some point they would have to explain how the hell he ISNT in the hunt .
I agree. The guy beat Hulk Hogan for the WWF title and to the best of my knowledge never lost clean in a WWF match. If you're not going to book him on top it doesn't make sense to book him at all. In 1996 the latter option made more sense.

Survivor Series 96 was supposed to be Vader v Shawn Michaels. Vader was supposed to have a trilogy with HBK at Summerslam, Survivor Series and Royal Rumble, dropping the belt to Vader at Survivor Series and then winning it back in his hometown of San Antonio, Texas at the 1997 Royal Rumble. Then Bret Hart was supposed to win the Rumble and beat Shawn for the title at Wrestlemania 13. However HBK got shitty with Vader's "strong-style" at Summerslam and refused to work with him. Sid ended up taking Vader's place in the booking and won the title at Survivor Series. After winning the title back from Sid at Royal Rumble, Michaels, "lost his smile" and Bret won the title at Final Four, only for Vince to change his mind about the WM13 main event and have Sid v Taker.
Shawn "lost his smile" because he knew he had to drop the belt to Bret before 'Mania 13. So he took his own way out and Bret was booked to win the vacant title anyway. Which was supposed to lead to Bret and Austin for the title at 'Mania. But politics reared it's ugly head and Bret ended up dropping the belt to Sid, leading to the Sid-Taker match. Bret and Austin had the match of the year anyway regardless. So it wasn't all that bad.

Oh he was changing with the times. Just listen to that promo he cut on Goldust. I think he was wearing a baseball cap in that promo too. He was kind of morphing into a more human character than the superhero one he'd been years earlier.
To be fair, it wasn't JUST Warrior's idea to squash Hunter like a bug. He was still in the middle of getting punished for the curtain call (since Vince couldn't do anything to Shawn, as a main eventer). The Warrior match was part of his sentence of jobbing to the stars.

Maybe im remember incorrectly, but i believe the last raw tapings warrior was on was the june tapings in green bay. I was at those tapings, aisle seats at brown country arena. I remember recording them all cuz you could see me and my buddies a lot during entrances. And i beleive that last one opened with gorilla monsoon saying warrior was indefinitely suspended
And the next match that was featured after that announcement was... Warrior vs. Owen. Bad timing.

we were supposed to see Warrior in I believe Albany or Poughkeepsie around that time and found out when we got to the venue that Syd replaced him .........i was kinda miffed lol

i live in cincinnati and at us bank arena then called Riverfront Coliseum, we had a house show main event of Warrior vs Taker in a casket match, but they admitted to us, the crowd, that warrior did not show up to perform for us, and they got a replacement. It was Sid. So i got to see a very entertaining match of Taker vs Sid in a casket match. I didnt say a very good MATCH. But it was very entertaining. The crowd went nuts for Sid at the time. I recall being happier at the time to see Sid than Warrior. I was an nwa Sid mark. Thanks Jim and Brian!

I actually saw a promo with Shawn Michael's, Ahmed Johnson and the Ultimate Warrior calls Shawn "the greatest wrestler in the world" during the promo and Shawn positively Beams. I think that Warrior would have been ok and cool with putting Shawn Over. He put Undertaker Over, as well. As long as it made sense, Warrior appears to have no problems with putting certain people Over, if it made sense, at least.
However, Sean couldn't say the same thing for Warrior.
@@rnhtube Yup, I completely agree with you on that. He was also Wayy too politically saavy for Warrior, too, as Jim pointed out. He would have eventually talked Vince into feeling that Warrior was Old and washed up and from a different time period and everything too, probably.

I live in Tahlequah Oklahoma. But that was one of my favorite lines he could lose his smile but not the belt. I think Warrior should of been the one called psycho. Because he was. One thing too is he would talk shit about those who helped make him. And I was not big on either Shawn Micheals because of the way he yelled move at Vader and kicked him right in the head. Vader never got over after that night. Shawn refused to work with him again. So no two out of three matches that was planned. What is sad is Vader still talked good about Shawn Micheals. Made me feel ill. What is crazy is Shawn was the best in the ring. How great he could of been if he had the right attitude. Now I know he came back and people said he changed. And I guess believing in something can change certain people I don't know. I think alot of people wouldn't take his crap. But he would lose quite a bit after he returned. And did help some of the younger talent. But then people like the revival he didn't so I don't know. But I think it would of been a disaster to have Ultimate Warrior and Shawn Micheals. It would of been as bad a the screw job probably.
