It's interesting that Bullock's character Huxley (and she is adorable) is named after the author of the dystopian novel Brave New World which is sort of like this world, a happy, happy, joy, joy world where people are conditioned to be happy about their place in life.

BTW, her pronoun is Lenina, so her full name is even more complex than that. And the name Cocteau comes from the French artist and director Jean Cocteau, known for his version of Beauty and the Beast and other works that revolve around popular mythology.

  • @XS_Sanz

    - This movie predicted so many things that passed from being a goofy movie to serious science-fiction.
    - John Spartan's daughter is supposed to be one of the underdwellers (as explained in a deleted scene). You can see her in a blink-and-you-miss-it scene, she's the woman Spartan pushes to safety when Phoenix and his gang start the shootout.
    - You can also catch a glimpse of Jack Black a minute earlier, too.
    - The 3 seashells are a creator's joke and they mean... absolutely anything, writers just wanted to tease the audience. Nowadays, this has become another prediction come true (in a way), since we use exactly 3 buttons in our smartphones and other simplified interfaces.

This film satires so many levels of society (well, 90's society). San Angelus has eliminated crime and ensured people are healthy in body and mind, but they've become almost childlike without anything to struggle against in the prized glass bauble Doctor Cartaugh has made their world into.
Meanwhile Friendly's group are free, yes, but they'd literally rather live in filth and eat rats then conform in any way. As for Pheonix, he's an utter madman who treats violence like the funnest game at the fair, and Spartan for all his attitude is a lot more grounded and emotionally mature then his over the top action scenes would suggest, recognizing the madness in submitting to the Doctor's pure order, or Simon's chaos.

43:17 The rat study was an experiment to find the effects of population density on behavior in rats and mice. The rats and mice in John Calhoun's experiments initially got along when the population was low and their living conditions were not crowded. They did not self destruct because all their needs were met. The self-destruction was due to a high population in a small space.

The Schwarzenegger President joke is a joke between Arnold and Sylvester. Like in Last Action Hero, in Arnold's world, Sylvester Stallone starred in all of Arnold's classics (ie Terminator 2) - his daughter's scene was left on the cutting room floor. She is down in the sewers and when Phoenix attacks, he's actually interrupting the reunion. You can see her for a brief glimpse when Stallone throws down the table and pushes a woman up against a wall to protect her (his daughter). As for the three seashells. No one knows. Everyone has their theories but it's been a fun topic of discussion for many years........

I would’ve loved to see them have Zach Lamb (Copter pilot) do something more in the film than just talk about Spartan. 16:14 some countries they said Pizza Hut instead of Taco Bell cause Taco Bell isn’t well known around the world. 17:21 what’s even more boring about it is none of the food would be very spicy cause of all their laws. Sandra Bullocks Taco Bell dress was so heavy that when they were outside after Spartan fought the rebels the dress almost fell off one of the straps broke. 36:51 to this day they still have not acknowledged what the seashells do. Some speculate that they’re buttons to work parts of the toilet. That seems more logical than using the seashells on the body cause how sanitary would that be.

For sci-Fi of today, try Soylent Green, a 50 year old movie set in 2020's.

Demolition man is Sylvester Stallone's and Wesley snipes #1 movie of their careers. Aside from the Rocky and expendables series. #1 movie ever for both of them

15 year age difference between the two actors. Which was super common at the time... now I'm not knocking age differences but it was always weird.

Everyone talking about how Arnie was President in this movie, but no one is talking about how the US Constitution now has at least 60 Amendments 😂😂😂

    - This movie supports my in-my-head-only thesis that the best movie villains are the ones who are allowed to have fun in their parts (see Hans Gruber, Clarence Bodecher, Simon Phoenix, etc.)
    - Paused this video to grab a drink and while I was walking random thought how much Joker energy Snipes was giving. Then I un-paused the video and Achara & Kristen said the same thing!
    - Paused the video AGAIN to add my these statement above about fun villains, only to unpause and the first thing I hear is "He's so much fun"! WHAT. ARE. THE. ODDS?!?!?! 🤣
    - Much like the question of what was in Marsellus Wallace's suitcase in PULP FICTION, or whether the Mars atmosphere ending of TOTAL RECALL was real or a simulation, the three seashells and how they work remain one of cinema's greatest unsolved mysteries. And it's probably better that way 😆
    - Even though is product placement to the highest degree, the Taco Bell bit is one of the most organic, non-forced examples of that I think I've seen in a movie. Very funny.
    - This is a wonderful 90s action-comedy, and Sandy B's first big role, that came out just before SPEED if I'm not mistaken. This idea would also make for an awesome streaming series. Would love to explore this world more... and see how the rest of the world in this future is. Bring some nuance & context & build out the oversimplified dystopian utopia they show here.

Phoenix said something about separating his head back in 1996. Taco Bell had a lot of fun when this movie came out.

There are jokes and references in this film that were permissible at the time of the production, that are now totally unacceptable now. Sci-Fi was so great at World Building.

Honestly, I became a fan of this movie because of Sylvester and Wesley, but I stuck around because of Denis Leary's rant when they meet him in the sewers.

At the time the movies depiction of the future was seen as more comedic, but recently is now being seen as more accurate to how things are going then any other futures shown in movies.
