BTW, her pronoun is Lenina, so her full name is even more complex than that. And the name Cocteau comes from the French artist and director Jean Cocteau, known for his version of Beauty and the Beast and other works that revolve around popular mythology.
This film ages like fine wine with each passing year. It's funny to think that when it came out, we thought there was no way we'd live to see it come true, but time so often proves us wrong. One thing that occurred to me recently is the behavior of the people of San Angeles, who are basically stand-ins for the Eloi from The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. The few of them who actually interact with the main characters are basically NPCs who don't really seem to have any agency, initiative, resourcefulness, or personality. They're completely provided for like prized purebred animals are cared for by wealthy aristocrats, and it's made clear throughout the film that they sort of wander around in a lobotomized state as though they've had all the pugnacious qualities that humans possess totally nerfed from their personalities. And it's not just a few people, it's endemic in the population, even the police force. Like clipping the wings of a bird, filing the teeth down on a dog, declawing a cat, etc. The animals aren't really handicapped, and it doesn't radically alter their health, but it does alter their natural state to the point that they can't function genuinely as they're meant to. Makes you start to wonder how a whole population could come to be this way in a supposed utopia, especially when you realize nothing is an accident in a centrally controlled society.
What a predictive movie this was! In 2017 for instance smoking was banned in all restaurants here in Austria - a disastrous blow for our gastronomy by the way.
This movie is a lot of fun. And even beyond the whole predicting the control of society thing that we might be dangerously heading to; They also predicted little things like self driving cars and even video calls that didn't exist at the time the movie was made.
A bit like predicting the sun will still be in the sky. Dick Tracy had video watches, and the idea of video calls has been around for ages. Don't know why people try so hard to talk up movies.

Even as a teen I had a crush on Sylvester Stallone and this movie was a big reason for it. We as a family loved to watch it, then I watched it with hubby, and now we watch it with our kids. We love to joke about the 3 shells. It's just so fun. And who doesn't adore Sandra Bullock. They are amazing together.
The building that was demolished at the beginning of the movie was the Belknap Building in Louisville KY. I used to work in the building across the street and was in there many times.
My dad ran into Wesley Snipes and Sylvester Stallone in Louisville Ky when this movie was coming out. He said Sylvester and Wesley were two of the most jacked dudes he's seen. This was the golden era of action herod for sure.
Spartan's disbelief at Arnold being President is arguably the best joke in this movie, because of the apparent rivalry Stallone had with him at the height of their fame.
You're right, a scene in which Spartan meets his daughter was filmed, and some footage of her is still in the movie - she's the woman Spartan is shieldling when Phoenix and his men open fire in the underground attack sequence.
It's so weird how this movie was seen as just another Stallone action film when it came out, but now has become very relevant to the time we live in. I'm glad you two dug it, though. It's one of my top favorite Stallone movies. Not too long ago, he said he's interested in doing a sequel, so I hope it happens. I'd love to know what became of that society after Cocteau died and the cryo prison was destroyed. Obviously, it would have to take place in the 2060s since Sly is much older now.

Movies that take place in the future are either dystopian or gags. What I love about this one is it manages to do both. It's a hilariously dystopian future with hard R violence. Plus the swear box gag is best, I love how it's just always there.
Stallone and Schwarzenegger played with each other with Demolition Man and Last Action Hero with the President and in Arnold's films it was his films with Stallone as the character :D
The "rebels" weren't lower class. They were actual rebels. They chose that life because they understood the tyranny of the society and chose to not live that way.

Phoenix is one of cinemas greatest villains. Dude looked like he was having SO much fun being evil. Snipes NAILED this role. This whole cast was perfect. Hope the rumors of a sequel are true.

Fun fact. When this was released in Europe they realized we did not have a clue what Taco Bell was at the time, so they reshot the scene with 'pizza hut' winning the franchise wars ...
They didn't reshoot it. They just dubbed over the original Taco Bell lines and digitally plastered the "Pizza Hut" logo over the "Taco Bell" one. They are both owned by Pepsi.
- This movie predicted so many things that passed from being a goofy movie to serious science-fiction. - John Spartan's daughter is supposed to be one of the underdwellers (as explained in a deleted scene). You can see her in a blink-and-you-miss-it scene, she's the woman Spartan pushes to safety when Phoenix and his gang start the shootout. - You can also catch a glimpse of Jack Black a minute earlier, too. - The 3 seashells are a creator's joke and they mean... absolutely anything, writers just wanted to tease the audience. Nowadays, this has become another prediction come true (in a way), since we use exactly 3 buttons in our smartphones and other simplified interfaces.
The relationship between John Spartan and Simon Pheonix in this film was amazing as well as funny, another good movie from Sly is Assassins, also starring Julieanne Moore and Antonio Banderas.
Such a great film, a classic action movie that I'll never forget. They just don't make them like this anymore! Stallone and Snipes are truly badass, and Sandra Bullock makes it very fun :)
Fun fact. You can't detonate C4 whit fire. You can literarly set it on fire, and it will just slowly burn. You need to give it a electrical spark to detonate it.
When Simon popped out that eye with the gun and the next shot is of that eye on the pen..., I wasn't expecting that when I first saw it as a 9 year old boy. That scared the shit out of me. The rest of the movie is most excellent. The fact that most of the movie is a satire on what we think life would be in 40 years at that time connected when I got older.
In the 80s it was a very common decoration in bathrooms to have seashells in a bowl on the back of the toilet. We had them in the bathroom at my house.
Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary were also in a movie together - Two if By Sea, which is a pretty good RomCom. Stallone and Schneider were in Judge Dredd together - which is a not so good adaption of the comic (other than the look). Urban did it much better later in Dredd.

This movie is the perfect action satire, a cross between THE TERMINATOR meets Lethal Weapon meets RoboCop. It even somehow predicted the future, from the PC Culture, to Wokeness, and COVID.
Yes, this movie basically represents the idealized ''world" the modern left is fighting to achieve, and explains why the results of "achieving it'' would be terrible.
It's funny how those little pucks they put on Spartan kept switching sides during the opening credits. Phoenix's contacts kept switching sides throughout the movie, too.
Watching you watch this movie reminded me of the great 90s action movies: "true lies", "last action hero", "face off" "heat", "the Rock" ... so many good movies ... I must go on a binge!

Demolition Man was the greatest movie ever made until Pacific Rim came out. Stallone is a comedy genius, as this performance proves. Sandra Bullock is at her sweetest, too. Wonderful! Nice reaction, ladies.
I remember being at a showing of this during Drunkin Cinema. The lady next to me had never seen it and got the card, 'Take a drink every time someone violates the verbal mortalities act'. She had fun ;)

It's sort of dated, but one of my favorite Wesley Snipes movies is "New Jack City." For a slice of time (1989-2004), the man could do almost no wrong, then his ego got the better of him and he found himself mainly on direct-to-video productions. And then he ran into the IRS.
There was a panel in the comic book adaptation that shows Spartan reuniting with his daughter. You can actually see him protecting her during the shoot-out in the sewer with Phoenix. She had joined up with Friendly.
I looked it up. The 3 seashell ring worked as a scooper. Basically you would scooping your behind instead of wiping. His daughter was in but was cut out. Spartan was holding his daughter in the tunnels when Phoenix started shooting.
I'm so happy you guys played the "my boggle" line that's one of my favorite lines in this entire movie! the Sylvester Stallone Arnold Schwarzenegger joke is put in the movie because of their real life rivalry Back in the Mid to late 80s and early 90s they both were competing with each other constantly with movies. So the director decided to actually add this as a very crazy joke that has some real life implications of course this movie was made before Arnold Schwarzenegger became Governor of California so yes definitely some future predictions in this movie. I like how they used Ice 9 as the basis for their 'cryo-freeze pellets'. While there are obvious differences, the similarities are striking. This is also my favorite Pinball Machine. Denis Leary was like many standup comedians of the 80's. They parlayed their popularity into movie and television roles. Some lasted, others contributed and faded. If unfamiliar with his work, a quick search would bring up several of his routines.

It makes sense that the three seashells are buttons. Wash, rinse, and then air dry. Because of this future's prioritizing sustainability. There are setups like that already overseas. I know someone came up with an absurd answer where they're used to pince and then scrape the mess but it was hard to take seriously. Once anything contacts fecal matter it becomes contaminated so that way never made sense, no matter how futuristic your imagination is.

The thing about the Arnold Schwarzenegger library was that when this movie was made there was a huge rivalry between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone... This movie was packed with little Ironic details about little details of 90's life.
This is my all time favorite movie. Both Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Or so cool to me in this movie when I was a kid. Also, it was really refreshing watching you two watch this movie. Because you understood everything that happened and paid attention to details.
Delightful reaction - this may have been the perfect movie for you two to watch - and it's freaky w Kristen's swear-jar story at the end that makes her practically a character right out of this movie (complete w cyborg-looking arm cast lol) - other fantastic sci-fi satire films you should watch include Brazil, District 9, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Logan's Run, THX-1138, Brother from Another Planet, Man Who Fell to Earth, Scanner Darkly, They Live, Solaris, Her, Moon, Eternal Sunshine, 12 Monkeys, Gattaca, and 1927 Metropolis (esp tinted disco Moroder version)

This film satires so many levels of society (well, 90's society). San Angelus has eliminated crime and ensured people are healthy in body and mind, but they've become almost childlike without anything to struggle against in the prized glass bauble Doctor Cartaugh has made their world into. Meanwhile Friendly's group are free, yes, but they'd literally rather live in filth and eat rats then conform in any way. As for Pheonix, he's an utter madman who treats violence like the funnest game at the fair, and Spartan for all his attitude is a lot more grounded and emotionally mature then his over the top action scenes would suggest, recognizing the madness in submitting to the Doctor's pure order, or Simon's chaos.
The daughter reveal (she was down below with Edgar Friendly) was cut. The seashell usage instructions were revealed by Stallone from the writer. It's a lot like chopsticks - Two shells spread the cheeks, the third scoops the poops.
Great movie. Westly Snipe is a great actor. You should see his other great movies Passenger 57 and Blade . In the Europe version of the movie it is Pizza Hat instead of Taco Bell. since is Taco Bell is not that common in Europe :). Fyi Arnold and Stallone were kind of competitors in the 80s and 90s that is why they make fun of the other in their movies :).
There was actually a deleted scene where Spartan found his daughter living underground with Frienldy's people. The girl he shielded during the fight underground was actually supposed to be his daughter but they ended up cutting that out along with a scene of Phoenix killing Zach Lamb before he stole the car. I honestly wish they'd left both scenes in or at least given us an extended cut or something.
Fun fact: in a similar vein to the Governor Schwarzenegger that they joke about in this film, Jesse Ventura also appears in this film in a small role(he's the cryo con that shoots Cocteau). He was serving as the Mayor of Brooklyn Park at the time of filming and would go on to become the Governor of Minnesota in '98.

In some extended script/cut scenes/director cut it was exposed that the Spartan's daughter was with rebels, and was even in some underground scene.

Fun fact. When this was released in Europe they realized we did not have a clue what Taco Bell was at the time, so they reshot the scene with 'pizza hut' winning the franchise wars ...
They didn't reshoot it. They just dubbed over the original Taco Bell lines and digitally plastered the "Pizza Hut" logo over the "Taco Bell" one. They are both owned by Pepsi.
- This movie predicted so many things that passed from being a goofy movie to serious science-fiction.
- John Spartan's daughter is supposed to be one of the underdwellers (as explained in a deleted scene). You can see her in a blink-and-you-miss-it scene, she's the woman Spartan pushes to safety when Phoenix and his gang start the shootout.
- You can also catch a glimpse of Jack Black a minute earlier, too.
- The 3 seashells are a creator's joke and they mean... absolutely anything, writers just wanted to tease the audience. Nowadays, this has become another prediction come true (in a way), since we use exactly 3 buttons in our smartphones and other simplified interfaces.
So many funny one liners in this movie…”We’re the police we’re not trained to handle this kind of violence!” 🤣
To this day there has never been an answer to the seashells.

The relationship between John Spartan and Simon Pheonix in this film was amazing as well as funny, another good movie from Sly is Assassins, also starring Julieanne Moore and Antonio Banderas.
And the one he did with James Woods, Sharon Stone, and Eric Roberts. THE SPECIALIST.
Such a great film, a classic action movie that I'll never forget. They just don't make them like this anymore! Stallone and Snipes are truly badass, and Sandra Bullock makes it very fun :)
Fun fact. You can't detonate C4 whit fire. You can literarly set it on fire, and it will just slowly burn. You need to give it a electrical spark to detonate it.
This movie is still as good today as it was when it came out. And I think that Dennis Leary's rant was one of the funniest in movie history.
When Simon popped out that eye with the gun and the next shot is of that eye on the pen..., I wasn't expecting that when I first saw it as a 9 year old boy. That scared the shit out of me. The rest of the movie is most excellent. The fact that most of the movie is a satire on what we think life would be in 40 years at that time connected when I got older.

In the 80s it was a very common decoration in bathrooms to have seashells in a bowl on the back of the toilet. We had them in the bathroom at my house.

You can always tell where someone is when watching this because in the US Cocteau invites Spartan to Taco Bell, but in Europe it is Pizza Hutt.
Bullock's character was named "Huxley" after Aldous Huxley, the author of "Brave New World" which is the seminal novel of a dystopian future.
Sandra Bullock and Denis Leary were also in a movie together - Two if By Sea, which is a pretty good RomCom.
Stallone and Schneider were in Judge Dredd together - which is a not so good adaption of the comic (other than the look). Urban did it much better later in Dredd.
The thirst trap of this duo has separate fan base 😂😂👍

This movie is the perfect action satire, a cross between THE TERMINATOR meets Lethal Weapon meets RoboCop.
It even somehow predicted the future, from the PC Culture, to Wokeness, and COVID.
Yes, this movie basically represents the idealized ''world" the modern left is fighting to achieve, and explains why the results of "achieving it'' would be terrible.

It's funny how those little pucks they put on Spartan kept switching sides during the opening credits. Phoenix's contacts kept switching sides throughout the movie, too.
Watching you watch this movie reminded me of the great 90s action movies: "true lies", "last action hero", "face off" "heat", "the Rock" ... so many good movies ... I must go on a binge!

Demolition Man was the greatest movie ever made until Pacific Rim came out. Stallone is a comedy genius, as this performance proves. Sandra Bullock is at her sweetest, too. Wonderful! Nice reaction, ladies.

It's sort of dated, but one of my favorite Wesley Snipes movies is "New Jack City." For a slice of time (1989-2004), the man could do almost no wrong, then his ego got the better of him and he found himself mainly on direct-to-video productions. And then he ran into the IRS.

There was a panel in the comic book adaptation that shows Spartan reuniting with his daughter. You can actually see him protecting her during the shoot-out in the sewer with Phoenix. She had joined up with Friendly.
I looked it up. The 3 seashell ring worked as a scooper. Basically you would scooping your behind instead of wiping. His daughter was in but was cut out. Spartan was holding his daughter in the tunnels when Phoenix started shooting.

I'm so happy you guys played the "my boggle" line that's one of my favorite lines in this entire movie! the Sylvester Stallone Arnold Schwarzenegger joke is put in the movie because of their real life rivalry Back in the Mid to late 80s and early 90s they both were competing with each other constantly with movies. So the director decided to actually add this as a very crazy joke that has some real life implications of course this movie was made before Arnold Schwarzenegger became Governor of California so yes definitely some future predictions in this movie. Awesome reaction ladies...☺☺

It makes sense that the three seashells are buttons. Wash, rinse, and then air dry. Because of this future's prioritizing sustainability. There are setups like that already overseas. I know someone came up with an absurd answer where they're used to pince and then scrape the mess but it was hard to take seriously. Once anything contacts fecal matter it becomes contaminated so that way never made sense, no matter how futuristic your imagination is.
Rumor has it that the 3 seashells came from decorations inside a hotel bathroom either the writers/director came across.
@@justinbeverly7895 Avon had a series of decorative soaps which came in box sets of three. Usually they were shaped as sea horses or sea shells. They were popular bathroom decor in the 1980s. That is my theory to the origin of the joke.

The thing about the Arnold Schwarzenegger library was that when this movie was made there was a huge rivalry between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone...
This movie was packed with little Ironic details about little details of 90's life.
This is my all time favorite movie. Both Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Or so cool to me in this movie when I was a kid. Also, it was really refreshing watching you two watch this movie. Because you understood everything that happened and paid attention to details.

Delightful reaction - this may have been the perfect movie for you two to watch - and it's freaky w Kristen's swear-jar story at the end that makes her practically a character right out of this movie (complete w cyborg-looking arm cast lol) - other fantastic sci-fi satire films you should watch include Brazil, District 9, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Logan's Run, THX-1138, Brother from Another Planet, Man Who Fell to Earth, Scanner Darkly, They Live, Solaris, Her, Moon, Eternal Sunshine, 12 Monkeys, Gattaca, and 1927 Metropolis (esp tinted disco Moroder version)

This film satires so many levels of society (well, 90's society). San Angelus has eliminated crime and ensured people are healthy in body and mind, but they've become almost childlike without anything to struggle against in the prized glass bauble Doctor Cartaugh has made their world into.
Meanwhile Friendly's group are free, yes, but they'd literally rather live in filth and eat rats then conform in any way. As for Pheonix, he's an utter madman who treats violence like the funnest game at the fair, and Spartan for all his attitude is a lot more grounded and emotionally mature then his over the top action scenes would suggest, recognizing the madness in submitting to the Doctor's pure order, or Simon's chaos.

The daughter reveal (she was down below with Edgar Friendly) was cut. The seashell usage instructions were revealed by Stallone from the writer. It's a lot like chopsticks - Two shells spread the cheeks, the third scoops the poops.
Great movie. Westly Snipe is a great actor. You should see his other great movies Passenger 57 and Blade . In the Europe version of the movie it is Pizza Hat instead of Taco Bell. since is Taco Bell is not that common in Europe :). Fyi Arnold and Stallone were kind of competitors in the 80s and 90s that is why they make fun of the other in their movies :).
There was actually a deleted scene where Spartan found his daughter living underground with Frienldy's people. The girl he shielded during the fight underground was actually supposed to be his daughter but they ended up cutting that out along with a scene of Phoenix killing Zach Lamb before he stole the car. I honestly wish they'd left both scenes in or at least given us an extended cut or something.
Fun fact: in a similar vein to the Governor Schwarzenegger that they joke about in this film, Jesse Ventura also appears in this film in a small role(he's the cryo con that shoots Cocteau). He was serving as the Mayor of Brooklyn Park at the time of filming and would go on to become the Governor of Minnesota in '98.
I was surprised you didn't show Edgar Friendly's (Denis Leary) speech about why they are in the sewers. One of the best in any movie
