Maybe my ears are clogged when for the 100th time I heard Dr BMK sing it as Bantu Reeti Kolu viyyaveyya Rama with a distinct pause after kolu. To me Balamuralikrishna is the final authority on St Tyagarajas Kritis. Colloquial Telugu and grammatical might be koluvu iyya but that’s not how other musicians pronounce. It is always Kolu viyya vaya Rama.

Anyway no point arguing further. I beleive the meaning of the words is the ultimate for carnatic music. Not the musical interpretation itself. Kolu viyyavayya has no meaning although it is equally melodious. And for a devotee like Thyagaraja, I beleive he would want his songs to be sung with meaning. He is asking Rama for Koluvu( job) as a Bantu(servant/ attendant).
