One Year of Unity Game Development!

- One year and three months ago, I started developing a medieval physics puzzle game with Unity. Here is my game development progress.

I've been making games for over 5 years, and have had fun the whole way. I started with a game engine called Corona SDK, that would let you build 2D games for mobile devices. Wanting to upgrade to 3D, I started learning Unity. So I began work on a procedural space exploration game, which turned out to be fairly large in scope, and I quit after 9 months of development. After that, I took a small break from game dev, but eventually picked it back up and made a few smaller unity games.
This brings us to last March, when I was ready to start a larger game. I wanted it to involve trebuchets, and I love sandbox games, so I eventually settled on a 2D physics sandbox game where you build siege engines to complete various tasks. Early development focused on making the building system easy and intuitive to use.
As development progressed I ran into problems: the building system is more complicated than expected, the objectives are too complex or not expandable enough, graphics are holding the game back. I try to solve these problems, some of which I'm still working on.
Today the gameplay is centered around transporting a ragdoll foot soldier to the flag. You must build siege engines, machines, vehicles, etc. to successfully get him to his goal. I'm getting so close to a playable version of the game that can be released as a demo. It still needs some things, like sound effects, menu screens, and bug fixes, so I'm really working hard to get this into the hands of players. This would be the best way to gain feedback and improve the game.

@@SamHogan how did you learn to use unity, I've only learned how to use construct 2, an engine similar to sketch but more powerful and usable for more than a prototype. PS:sorry for bad English

@@paolobaldini735 Learn the basics of C# (Propertys, Methods, Functions, Events, Variable Types etc. ) and how to properly work with Visual Studio. Then start with unity.

All my familly was playing this game a lot, we were all tryharding, i even got 1st place on the game center leaderboard!! This is one of the best game i've ever seen!!! I subbed to you 2 hours ago and now I see you made this game I've been playing for years.

Here’s an idea to add more: make a few set levels, and after the player finsishes those they can create their own level or maybe get a randomly generated one? Something that could make it more interesting is a limited number of objects.

For the issue with moving connected wood beams,I would recommend maybe a different button being held down to move both or one of them,this could be shown by a simple tooltip or obvious enough that it is easy to figure out

Honestly, leaving in the "no objective sand box" is a cool idea, as like, a seperate game mode. I also thing different objects should "cost" a currency, using that as either a score system (less=better) or as an actual currency, being at the end of each level you get paid a certain amount, that adds to your bank, where you can spend it in future levels, replay old ones to get money if you perhaps run low.

Very cool. Nice to see such long term passion! I'll check out unity at some point too :D.
I think when you move any connected object, everything connected to it should move too. Maybe objects that are embedded within each-other should act as though they are connected? Then you can just apply 2D-physics interactions to unconnected things. Maybe I'd have to play the demo first to see if that makes certain things impossible.
I guess you could allow players to select pairs of blocks, to set them to interact physically or not, and make this relation symmetric and transitive, so it doesn't break the laws of physics too badly.
