Pixar always seems like this company that has to juggle pushing the CG animation technology forward and simply making a good story, and sometimes they just prioritize "technology" instead of making a proper story because it's easier to impress people that way.
You can be sure, regardless of how well this movie will be received by audiences, that young adults in animation colleges will be obsessively discussing on ArtStation and Polycount how this movie pushes the technology forward even if it's just the rigs are 5% more complex or it renders .0001 second faster per frame on average. And they will think the tools are fast and easy enough now to start trying to make their own "Toy Story" feature films all by themselves in Blender only to learn the hard way that, as always, massive corporations with massive budgets and teams are the only ones that can feasibly animate with high-poly CGi in a reasonable time frame without burning out (most of the time...), and in general animations only get to see the light of day when at least 2 or 3 people are dividing up the workload. TOTALLY not speaking from personal experience from my college days...

Sad thing is, I didn't think Pixar made this, I thought Disney just had another group do it, because the aesthetic is just so uninspiring. Compared to all their other movies that has the pixar flavor with unique styles for each one, this movie just looks so bland.

    • @JeffreyThrash

@@airget Pixar is run by flawed human beings, too. They were going to stumble at some point and still stumble in the future because they set the bar so impossibly high so early on. And that's assuming they didn't already disappoint fans in similar ways to Lightyear with movies like Brave, the Good Dinosaur and Cars 2.

What's weird is they made a film that's apparently meant to be the origin of the Buzz and Zurg toys but completely ignored the few bits of "lore" the movies provided.
The "galactic alliance" isn't really the thing it was implied to be and Zurg isn't Buzz's father.

8:15 My Great Great Uncle worked on the original "Three Caballeros" as one of a few guys who animated the character Panchito Pistoles, according to my mom, she got audio film reels sent to her from California and apparently he HATED working in the animation industry after years working on animated shorts as a clean up artist and told her never to peruse a career in it, if I recall correctly, this was around the time frame of Walts failing health and the studios were just really shafting the animators, especially the ones in the dregs like he was.

@@RebelTaxi I should clarify, when I say Audio film reels, I don't mean she got rare snipits of the movie, he sent her audio recordings of himself speaking to her which back then was recorded on large film reels and the biggest take away from those recordings (which my grandmother threw away thinking it was garbage -_- ) was how being an animator gives you little attachment to what you work on, I guess he felt being part of a collaborative process made it feel less like you can call the thing your working on your own, which probably wasn't helped during a time when the company was resorting to recycling parts of old animation cycles for their movies, its kinda hard to be proud of your work when part of it might be a copy and paste of someone elses from decades prior.

@@clem4999 no, I have no clue who that is. my Great Great uncles name was Kenneth Mowers, he lived in Burbank California and despite never meeting my mom in person when she was a little girl, he'd send her reel to reel audio tape telling her stuff about animation but strongly urged her not to pursue it as a career. The Three Caballeros was made in 1944 which meant he was on the team working on it around the early 40's which likely means he'd probably left the company by the time he sent my mom the audio reels so his time there was when Walt was still alive and well. I've tried looking my relatives name up on IMDB before but I got nowhere which doesn't shock me since he wasn't anyone important and might be uncredited (its been so long since I last saw the movie so I haven't scanned the films credits to see if he got any credit) if anyone finds anything, please let me know.

Then again, it would also be unapologetic with the values of the age as well. Sure, it would probably have some adult lines that would fly over my head, but that's what would make it more brilliant when rewatching it.

Well, according to one tweet of the "Lightyear" director... toys weren't based on this movie directly.
He responeded on Tweeter to someone saying:
    "Not quite
Lightyear inspired cartoon series Buzz Lightyear Star Command
Toys were produced off the cartoon designs"
Angus McLane, on April 23 2022 responed to that tweet: "This is correct"
And that's not all, in a Q&A, before movie release, he also said:
"I imagine this was a movie that then later there was the spinoff cartoon, and then the 'Toy Story' toy was made off of that cartoon design. Because that very much was the way it would be in the '80s and early '90s, that there would be a big-budget movie, like a serious movie, and then would get ported to a TV show."
So, yeah... according to "Lightyear" director, the Toy Story toys were based on "Star Command" cartoon, and not directly on this movie... So this movie is even more pointless.

Trust me, I was there in the 90's, they made some *goofy af* looking kids movies... if they'd have just leaned into that decade more and had a little more fun with it, it could have been a great throwback sort of movie, but instead it just ends up looking like Disney's gritty "grownup" 2020's live-action remake of one of their much better animated films. It just sucks that a Disney/Pixar movie is *finally* being allowed to show some decent LGBTQ representation, representation that they can't just quietly cut out overseas, and it's wasted on a movie no one asked for or really seems to care about.

honestly, when they aired the first 2 or so trailers, they said that the movie was going to involve "the real Buzz Lightyear"; see, my mind was thinking it was going to be a semi-biopic of the actual Buzz Lightyear as a stand-in for Buzz Aldrin, where he was simply a NASA pilot who was a guinea pig where he accidentally becomes the first person to achieve FTL travel, however NASA probably thought he died before he appears in the future to people who discover who he is. maybe they'd just pull some Meet the Robinsons'-esque BS and have the city's president be the son of the captain manning Buzz's ascent into space initially but was honestly cushy/incompetant. SOX would've been a spy who actually desires the fuel on Buzz's ship, which then leads to Zurg.
movie would've ended with Zurg indisposed, and Buzz travels back in time to the present, just a few seconds after he initially leaps, the father would be arrested due to espionage and Buzz would be hailed a hero of both timelines. this would lead to the Real Life/Toy Story timeline going as-is; just with the real Buzz giving fantastical ideas to animation producers to create the actual cartoons, using inspiration from his adventure. while the Lightyear movie timeline just jumps forward a few hundred years, probably random people adopting the names Buzz or Lightyear, and Zurg would probably become entirely robotic; leading to a Disney+ continuation of either the movie, or the cartoon, they could go wild.

About the canon thing... This is speculation on my part.
I think many screenwriters in Hollywood are now from the internet fanfic generation. We have so many fanfics freely available since the 2000s. And one particular thing about fanfics is "Screw canon, I want to write MY story with these characters! And I don't want canon to put a damper on my creativity." Which is a good part of the world's fanfic vault. I don't have the numbers, but I'm confident it's a nice percentage. And I agree that there are some good well-written fanfic stories that don't follow canon. As such it is my speculation that the "Screw Canon" mentality that I'm starting to observe in reboots, remakes, spinoffs, etc... may come from that generation mentioned above who became adults and got to write for money in Hollywood.

Eh to be fair internet fan fic didn't create writers with huge egos and no ability to take criticism. Those writers have existed forever.

    • @JeffreyThrash
      @JeffreyThrash 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@KaminoKatie But then creatively-bankrupt Hollywood wouldn't be able to make a profit simply by using an established IP, regardless of the quality of the actual movie. Although 50 Shades of Gray is a notably (and inexplicably) profitable example of an original fanfiction that didn't rely solely on milking popular characters.
As interesting as this hypothesis is, I think it's just a simple matter that large American studios value "safety" and "profit" over the inherent risk that comes with creative writing, thus will slap nostalgic characters and imagery on otherwise-original stories to ensure it dominates the box office even if it flops critically. Cruella, for instance, would have been an okay movie about a bold fashion design student but Disney had to butcher Cruella De Ville's entire personality and reputation in the process to make sure people at least talked about it (good or bad), even going as far as making her a dalmation-lover.

I find it funny how there’s a Disney+ series on the behind the scenes production on Lightyear. I mean I usually love anything behind the scenes related on animated movies and shows but it just seems to me like they were REALLY patting themselves on the back or boasting on an overall mid film.
    That’s pretty sad tbh
