    I appreciate that Pan tried to approach the angle of "Is this offensive?" from a fairly neutral perspective, plopping a few examples of troubling moments from the show but also trying to analyze creator intent. I feel like that's a tough position for a lot of us: we want to be good to our fellow human beings and call out stuff that unfairly stereotypes minorities or disenfranchised groups, but then again, the example of Speedy Gonzales always stays in my head as a stereotype that got embraced by the people it was stereotyping. So, sure, K.O. Joe is a Blaxsploitation stereotype, but he's also a homage to a famous martial arts Blaxsploitation actor (Jim Kelly) that I'm sure people have fond memories of. So, I dunno. I'm a fairly privileged white woman. Any Black, Chinese, and Japanese fans wanna weigh in?
    (I also appreciate that *most* of the comments here are *not* a bunch of complaints that "PeOpLe ArE ToO eAsIlY oFfEnDeD" and "NpC Pc SjWs HaVe RuInEd MuH cArToOnS." Stay classy, Taxifans. :D)

      I always approach it from the perspective of the stereotype not being used to make the character less than it's peers makes it ok, though i can't say it's always fun to watch.
      Like, there's only so many times i can watch a latin american character be this badass capo type before i get bored with how bland and safe the character ends up being.

      Being an albino black girl,the way I see is to understad the authoral intent. Theres a huge difference in what the author wants to show the audience and what indivual audience members will interpert. Its sort of a lose lose situation where your always gonna offend someone intentionally or not. I think that there is sadly a white culture created way back in the past that normalize certain sterotypes that make poc viewers wary, but we cant deny that some elments of sterotypes are real. Like Chuckie chans accent is common for anyone who has english as a second language (Source: My parents are Nigerian). I guess, go into things with an open mind and not immediately think something cultural inaccurate is okay or that we need to crucify and castrate the authors for making something without acknowledging the intent. The show seems more like a parody/homage of chinese karate movies,so I dont think there was any ill intent. But being purposefully offensive does warrant criticism.

      1-800-buttermycrops I mean you shouldn’t really bust it out in polite company (people might look at you confused and vaguely disgusted), but “Jap” held on far longer as an obvious dig at Japanese people. “Tojo” had its brief period in and around WW2 because of the political association to PM Tojo. It’s still a Japanese name, so it’s not exactly something that’ll stay offensive for very long.

    As an Asian american I wouldn't say I personally am offended but I can definitely see why anybody would be since it seems like the show,like a lot of other shows (from this decade especially) think the entirety of Asian is one country. Like how almost every character's names just seem to be just random Chinese and Japanese words are just fumbled together or how a presumably Chinese character painting the eye of a Japanese Daruma simple stuff like this is really noticeable if you know what you're looking at,It would be like a Brazilian Character celebrating Cinco De Mayo.I wouldn't say its overtly racist more so extremely ignorant,but nothing new at the end of the day.

      Ok no ... I am gonna stop you there ..they don't think Asia is one country .It's just fictional place in the show . These characters are chickens at the end of the day , not even Asian humans. They are just fictional characters with Asian inspiration when it comes to fighting style . It doesn't take place in Asia. It's like me , a Romanian, being angry at vampire shows cause it's stereotypical or it does not even take place in Romania, when the whole point of those shows is to have a vampire and not to honour my country . Same for this show , it's just a gimmick based on action films .How is it ignorant . When I was a kid and I watched this show ,I thought it was badass. I never even thought it had asiatic inspirations lmao

      @@dragonbullets2763 Yeah,I'm aware theyre chickens and that it doesn't literally take place in Asia. Taking inspiration isn't a problem,what I'm saying is that meshing two cultures together and treating them as if they were the same is rather ignorant especially when there are some tensions between those cultures,and I wouldn't blame someone if they were offended. Again taking inspiration from a culture isn't a problem "Samurai Jack" is an example of a show that does it wonderfully the "problem"(it's not really that big of a deal) here more lies in the misrepresentation of said cultures. Just because it is "gimmick" does not mean it can't be offensive,nor does you not finding it offensive. All I am saying is though I personally am not offended could easily see why anybody would be because of the way it uses it's inspiration is kinda questionable and kinda ignorant. A Spanish character named Pope Bagette Spegetti would still be questionable even if your shows gimmick/inspiration is Europe, not everyone may find it particularly offensive but would still probably deem it rather questionable if it wasn't for a joke(though I don't think anybody would actually find that one offensive) it's the same idea.

    • @dragonbullets2763
      @dragonbullets2763 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pixelatedmess9269 I get what you mean . As I said i do understand this to an extent since there are so many vampire parodies where their accent could be seen as offensive , and their names are just a variation on Vlad and Dracula , Dracula being a old leader in Romania. Having the name of an respected national hero of my country be transformed in to this parody joke , with a variation on the name ,failing to showcase places such as transylvania successfully.. is something I could cry and bitch about , but they never intended to showcase that country, most of them wanted to pay homage to an old horror character lightly based on old myths from around my country . Getting back to the point , they are trying to pay respect in a way to action movies with a more cartoonish approach.. they are not trying to pay respect from the country the movies come from , just like Dracula parodies. People that would get offended don't understand the point of the show . It tries to mimicking a intentionally fictional world , such as the one seen in those old movies which is not exactly a accurate showcase of asiatic cultures either. I get why it would be offensive too , but it's not like they wanted it to be .it's not ignorance, it's just that they didn't research Asia as much as the movies from there , wanting to create a wacky non-serious show ,not a samurai Jack style show

      @pixelatedmess9269 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@dragonbullets2763 Dragon Bullets yeah, I fully understand that the intent most likely wasn't to offend but it is still literally by definition is ignorance, A lack of knowledge/understanding or awareness. Im not saying they are bad people because of it but I am saying by definition it is still ignorant because while yes you could argue that they are being inspired/parodying movies from these cultures(which I disagree with considering that if this where the case we would see alot more of their tropes)I would argue that movies are definitely a representation of culture.Knights in a western would still be weird and would probably piss off someone who owns a gun so would professor Hamburger Texas the true American Patriot.And I don't think (and I may be wrong) that anybody really thinks all Romanian people are like Dracula,Im pretty sure anybody that stupid doesn't know that Romania is a country and if they do probably would associate Romanians with like Nico from GTA4 who I don't even think is Romanian,I do however know from personal experience that it is extremely common for people to think that every eastern Asian country is part of China.Intent at the end of the day is kinda irrelevant.

    I remember watching this show alongside Hero 108, I really liked it. My dad thought Wasabi was an alien instead of a piranha fish. I think we argued about it when we were watching the Christmas episode of it. Good times.

    "Who actually remembers Skunk Fu?"
    Fondly remembers the episode where Skunk finds a magic jade rock and Rabbit dons Mickey's Sorcerer's apprentice costume so he could conjure infinite carrots with it.
