You are actually one of the people who convinced me to start flight-simming and teaching me most of the basics. So thank you for that and thank you for new content as well.

A Long time coming, but we have another GREAT Tutorial. Nice one Jason, just setting up my X-plane now to fly your tutorial. If i was a little picky i would say your voice volume is a little low. The Airplane sound is just right, but i had phones on and volume on max and you were just audible. But hey thats small in comparison to your great style of teaching. Mate, you may not be a pilot, but if i was to fly with you and you and me were the only ones on-board not to have the fish, i would feel happy you landing the plane LOL!! (The fish is a reference to the great movie Airplane Lol)

Jason that was a brilliant tutorial. Followed it exactly and landed centre of the runway.

Since I only have a view hours of 737 experience, I called a friend who is an actual airline pilot. In short: You should set the course and heading selectors both to the final approach course. 044 in your case.
Long answer: This procedure depends on the company. The course selector should remain at the final approach course. Chances are that approach mode will switch off when you change the selection of the course selector.
    As for the heading bug:
Some companies like to align the heading with the aircraft heading so that when the coms fail you have a reference as to what heading to fly (this is what I have been taught). Downside to this is that on a non-precision approach the final approach course and the runway are not alligned. In that case a heading set for the final approach course will land you beside the runway. The heading bug is than the final approach course adjusted for wind.
Other companies, amongst the one my friend flies for, align the heading bug with the final approach course (so course 044 and heading 044). The downside is that you're not actually selecting a heading with the heading bug but a course. The upside is that, even on a non-precision, when the coms fail you have a reference as to what course to fly to the runway. Adjusting for wind is than done in reference to the heading bug and using the white line on the mfd. The heading bug is than the final approach course.
On an ILS approach it will not make any difference whether you align the heading bug with the runway or with the final approach course but on a non-precision approach it does.
For example (wind 090/20, rwy 180, final approach heading 169), in case of coms failure:
ILS appraoch (final approach course is always the same as the runway heading): Setting the heading bug to final approach course (180) will result in you having a reference as to what course to fly. You can use the white line on the mfd to aling with the heading bug in order to fly to course 180 to the threshold of rwy 180.
Setting the heading bug to actual heading (169) will result in you having to maintain the heading bug direction in order to fly course 180 to end up at the threshold of rwy 180.
VOR approach (final approach course - 184): Setting the heading bug to final approach course (184) will result in you having a reference to what course to fly. You can use the white line on the mfd to aling with the heading bug in order to fly the final approach course until visual for the rwy 180.
Setting the heading bug to the actual heading (173) will result in you not having a reference to what course to fly. You can't align the white line on the mfd with anything. This may cause you to end up besides the runway since it is a non-precision approach where the final approach course is 184 that leads to runway 180.
Therefore, I would argue that it is safer to aling the heading bug with the final approach course (in your case, set both course and heading selectors to 044) but in practise, either option works and the practises differ amongst companies themselves.
    EDIT ---- Original answer:
Correct me if I am wrong but I think the course selected in the mcp does not do anything when in approach mode and localizer captured. The plane will simply fly the ILS that is tuned in the radio.
The difference between the course and the heading is that course is a line between two point on earth. In other words, a line over the ground. A heading is the direction in which the nose of the airplane points. For example, let's say you would like to fly from north the south. If the wind is 090/20, you would have a heading of 169 to fly a course of 180. This is due to the wind coming from your left and so you must steer the nose of the aircraft to the left in order to go in a straight line over the ground.

Totally agree with the comments said before, that you did a great job on this tutorial. I set up my laptop, and played your tutorial at the same time as flying the route myself, and I was amazed how accurately they both were. I flew more or less in synch the entire flight, got a bit faster ahead, but when setting the arrival wind settings (at the same time as in the tutorial) I noticed that I had real world wx activated. Perhaps the wx settings I had was favourable in getting me there faster. In either case, this was my very first successful flight on autopilot ILS approach with zibo mod, and you made that possible for me! I'll be sure to look out for more videos. Thank you!

    Hi Jason,
After a long time I followed this tutorial with Zibo V3.40r2 and landed perfectly, although I forgot to switch off the A/T and AP. I learned many thing from your tutorials and they are well explained with out unnecessary sounds and talkings. Thanks a lot and I will try this more times because the short flight time is very good.

Runways are assigned the number to the nearest magnetic heading. Suppose a runway is on a magnetic heading of 044, then the runway will be assigned the number of 040. However and this happened ay Watsonville airport in central Ca , if the magnetic variation changes to say 046, then the runway will be assigned the number of 050. At Watsonville , the runway numbers were 010/190 changed to 020/200.

GREAT JOB! Very thorough and it actually worked for me (about the 5th try :))
I wonder if you have any of the ground school stuff in video. As a novice, one of the things that baffles me is how to pick a route. I understand some of the online tools like skyvector and flightplandatabase, and how to work them. What I do not understand is how to pick the appropriate route, including SIDS, STARS, NAVAIDS, etc. When to use one over the other? Are SIDS always required? STARS? How to pick the right runway based on current weather, time and environmental conditions? What terminal/ramp/gate should I use? does it matter?
Sure, I can let skyvector suggest a route, and plug that into the FMC but how do I know that is real world? when a discontinuity or vector line crops up I can fiddle with it and get them to go away, but am I doing it correctly?
I preface all of this with my desire to fly online at some point and i don't want to cause issues with the volunteer ATC and other pilots.
Any suggestions on how to get there from here?

With pleasure I have watched your video tutorial on the Zibo Mod ILS landing. Obviously you need to know how to master all the switches and instruments and the computers used in the flght deck. Whaty is the best way to learn how to use the 737-800? So far I have only praticed on the Cessna G1000.

Great tutorial Jason - the clearest on TH-cam as far as I'm concerned. You answered the question I asked about the approach button and you've also investigated the course vs heading issue which it seems we are both struggling with.
To anyone else who is looking at these comments - heading seems to always be described as the direction that the plane's nose is facing and course is the direction that you want to go (the difference between the two is caused by wind). But I can't understand how that translates to putting the numbers into the MCP. Any idea?

Great video -- keeps it very clear and simple! I do have one question, however -- as you hit 200FT before landing, you disengage the auto-throttle, but I believe you didn't actually disengage the A/P. On the ZIBO mod, doesn't that require you click the white bar at the bottom of the CMOD, rather than tap the CMD-A button?

Hi Again Jason, just run your tutorial, really Great, except one thing you might be able to help or anyone reading this. I am still getting the' approach VREF not selected' warning on the FMC, despite setting the 30 flaps and then choosing the approach speed. Also despite solid diamonds on the glide path and vertical path i had a huge red patch appear on the MFD indicating that i was too low. I landed safely after taking control at 200Ft like you. Can you or anyone throw light on what went wrong or what id did'nt do? Thanks

    • @JasonVriends
      @JasonVriends  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I figured out why you still get the error as it happened to me again also. You need to press the button in the FMC twice. Pressing it once makes it bigger (selects it), and pressing it a second time sets it which you will see appear below once done.

He's referring to ortho4xp. It enables you to download bing or Google map images of the landscape. I watched a very good instructional video on setting this up. I can provide a link if you want it. It takes some time to set up as you need to generate the data for the relevant locations you are interested in improving the imagery for. It also takes up disk space.

Pretty much if you are watching this to learn how to correctly fly a 737-800, go elsewhere. This "pilot" does not know how to set even basic settings correctly on a 737. I'm sorry to the maker of this video, but dude, you should take these down, this is really bad training for anyone that doesn't know the proper procedures. Setting the alt to 000 is insane

your tutorial is ok but in some points not correct. there are a few tutorials from real 737 pilots out there, why not learn from them and showcase us the correct way to fly this bird?
