  • The new golf, the mk8 gti clubsport can drive itself!! kind of! Can a family hatchback like the mk8 golf gti clubsport drive itself on the motorway and around town?
    0:00 intro - car technology in 2021
3:46 Motorway test - can it drive itself on the motorway?
10:16 Town test - can it drive itself around town?
14:27 Conclusion - is it any good?
The mk8 gti clubsport comes as standard with plenty of driver assists and in this video we look specifically at the "autonomous driving" the adaptive cruise control with lane assist and steering.
It is crazy to think that "normal" cars in 2021 have these assists and technology as standard! The new golf can speed up, slow down, stop, engine off, engine on, turn corners, read road signs and adjust speed accordingly ON ITS OWN!! Its crazy!!
On the motorway this technology works really well and (kind of) the mk8 gti clubsport can actually drive itself, around town however these technologies and assists become more of a hindrance and actually quite dangerous when it tries to drag you about all over the place to stay in the middle of the lane.
It is very interesting to see how far cars have come and where we are going in the future. Bring it on!!
Thanks as always for watching, please please do subscribe and I will see you in the next one.

I love my Golf's travel assist. The only downside is that here in Finland it doesn't work in winter

I think Kia Niro had this technology already back in 2017. But I love VM. Just got my 2023 Golf Life Plus 😃

I have had several models of the Golf GTi over the years. Great cars, great fun ! I get my Clubsport shortly & I can’t wait. Every time you change a car there are innovations to get used to; after a few days you never notice them. If you use a smartphone then the new VW technology will not be a problem provided you use common sense - switch off the features which don’t work for you.

You’ve got to be doing 40mph for lane assist to work. AAC works nominal in town. Have you tried it the AAC in a line of traffic. If you pay extra for traffic assist then then lane assist works below 40 but you’ve got to be going over 40 to make it start working.

Ahh that makes sense! It is a good system on the motorways. I still turn it off around town to avoid the car dragging me around the place 😂

Does the Golf GTI have TJA?
It seems that only Tuareg has such feature.

Hi, I’ve just had my golf r line mk8 delivered and paid extra for travel assist. I went to use it the other day and the button isn’t on my steering wheel.. I’ve gone back to garage to say they’ve not built it but they keep telling me it’s lane assist and ACC.. eventually they can now see I’ve not got it but now I’m being told I couldn’t have it for r line because I don’t have side assist., but it uses lane assist and ACC. Can anyone confirm if travel assist should work on R line if paid for! Really appreciate feedback

Thanks for the video! I do believe that semi autonomous systems are not meant to be used in dense urban areas, which your tests confirms

No problem, hope you enjoyed it. Absolutely, I don’t think it was ever made to work in built up areas but always fun to test the capabilities.

@@justdriving2888 great video. Here in the states mine works pretty well in my town. Our streets are a bit wider than yours, slightly different markings and parking regulations. It even puts up with me dodging pot holes all the time.
I agree where this shines is on the freeway/motorway. It should really help with driver fatigue.

Lane assist only operates from 40 mph and above so it turns off in town.

    Hi
I watched your self driving Mark 8, just today 6th Nov 2022, I own a Gold R-Line 2019 and it was/is "self drive " as well.
The mistake you made is according to the book, It allows you. to self drive but only above 80 KM your way approx. 48/59 mph and that works awesome when I get my new R-line 2033 on 2nd December it will be even better but not in ordinary streets, certainly not the crappy small streets from GB (SORRY) but on Freeways and 2 lane highways either side is great, I live in Australia and use it every day. Now I saw you driving the new one and that is even better than mine current one as I have to "shake" the steering wheel. to get back to self drive and do this like I said all the time, My new '22R-Line will out perform (the one I still have until dec) , by a long mile. Now I was happy with the fact that you were impressed with the self drive but not on small narrow roads with parked cars on it.
Perhaps you should correct the in your next video
Other than that, A GREAT video

Great video 👍 I’ve got the standard GTI in the same colour and I think the lane assist & emergency braking should only be allowed for use on the motorway because it is quite dangerous. Nearly had a collision myself where the car got very confused with a moving car and a parked car !!

Thanks, I appreciate that! Yeah it definitely has a mind of its own. It is very clever and crazy what standard cars can do these days, but I still turn it off haha!!

in theory its great. ours suddenly decides to read the road signs in kph rather than mph and slams on the breaks . Sometimes it thinks we are in europe and thinks your are undertaking a car rather than overtaking and again slams on the breaks. Its a shitshow and vw have washed their hands of it

Personally not for me. I am a driver. I do not need a car to think or do the work for me. Autonomous cars are for 90 year olds who can’t drone anymore..... 😎

So much standard tech, if this was an Audi, BMW, or Merc, you'd be paying so much for those driving assist features.
