Hey Music Junkies, Professor of Rock always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. We interview the great artists of the rock era and you never know what’s in store from day to day, subscribe so you don’t miss out.
I had the distinct privilege to speak with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame frontman of the Animals in our Eric Burdon interview some time ago and I was blown away. Whenever you are in the presence of a legend’s legend it’s a truly special. I mean Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, so many others who are directly influenced by them. Eric Burdon as the leader of the Animals was straight up, balls to the wall, no holds barred, heart rupturing and soul galvanizing as a singer. Few can compare to his intensity or his integrity for what he’s singing.
My dad introduced me to the Animals when I was very young and he said, this is what rock and roll is all about and of course he was right. The animals were a force to be reckoned with in the 60s and were right there with the Beatles, the Stones, The Byrds, the Supremes, the Four Tops and the Beach Boys in that fantastic 64-66 period of music. Many have argued that their number one hit The House of the Rising Sun was the first Folk Rock Hit. We talk about this in the mini documentary that will follow. We also bring Roger McGuinn of the Byrds into that conversation as well. The House of the Rising sun as with many classic folk ballads, is unknown in who the actual writer or composer was. There has been plenty of speculation .
Musicologists say that it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads, and thematically it does have some resemblance to the 16th-century ballad the Unfortunate Rake. But there isn’t clear evidence that there is a direct relation “. The great historian and musician Alan Lomax said that "Rising Sun" was the name of a bawdy house in two traditional English songs, and it was also a name for English pubs. He also said that the melody might be related to a 17th-century folk song, "Lord Barnard and Little Musgrave", also known as Matty Groves. Lomax also put forth the idea that the location of the house was then relocated from England to New Orleans by White Southern performers.
Others have said different. I discuss some of this with Eric and though there are disputes about the origin of the song, there is no dispute that the Animals recorded the definitive version of this song. Others who recorded it include Roy Acuff, Leadbelly, Woodie Guthrie, Nina Simone Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and many more. Here is Eric Burdon of the Animals with the complete story as we go into this interview I want to thank our Sponsor Zennie Eyewear. I’m wearing them now. It's not possible to say how many times I've belted out this song, singing along with your uncle, in the car, the living room, the lake, the kitchen.. since it first came out. I was 11 or 12, and couldn't get enough of The Animals. I liked other groups too- but the voice and delivery of Eric Burdon was like no other. I was, and still am, astounded by that voice coming from such a young man. I remain a fan..

I couldn't afford to buy albums as we were rather poor. My 50 cent weekly allowance didn't buy much so I had to be careful of how it was spent. When Eric sings "Oh mothers tell your children not to do what I have done / spend your life in sin and misery / in the house of the Rising Sun" the pain and agony in his delivery really hits home. For me it's the best ever moment in any song I've ever heard. I was 12 when I first heard it in 1964, and I still feel that impact even today, 58 years later.

"Does anyone know where the love of God goes/When the waves turn the minutes to hours" from The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, for one. The whole of The Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. What makes the Eric Burdon and The Animals version of House of the Rising Sun so haunting is the opening progressions. I remember my Mum being in hospital for about a month when my little sister was born. I was about 5 and was stuck with my Dad, my uncle and my brother. All three were musicians (or in my brother's case went on to be a musician). I remember this being played over and over and it terrified me! Over time is helped me to appreciate that a perfect vocal isn't just the one that is technically flawless but it's when the singer truly gets under the skin of the song. I'm a singing teacher so this has helped me to impress on my students the importance of understanding the meaning of a song and communicating it.

Not so much the 80's. My teens. Pop sucked.
Its a hard act to follow though.
3 decades of innovative technology in electric instrument's, studio recording, and media venues to get the music to the masses with an ever changing run of legendary talent bleeding out from fast societal changes and a nation in social upheaval. The music was innovative cuz it wasn't so cookie cutter the same, being disseminated by national canned radio all the same lame game.
I preferred my parents albums. Late 50's to late 70's is where I'm at for best music. Born in 65.
I guess its really a matter of your taste at your time. Personal.
      Wine women and song.
Sex drugs and rock and roll.
      Same meaning. Different time.
I have no idea why I just wrote all that.
Oh yeah. 80's sucked. Nukes. AIDS. Big hair. Crap music. Crap economy. Corrupt government. Crooked cops.

Eric Burden came to my High School and set up his band in the Gym for a small concert in the late 60's. These guys really worked hard, and played in lots of places besides big concerts. There was no band like them.

My God. You interviewed the *legendary* Eric Burdon. 🙌🏻 A legend's legend, just like you said. Such an amazing score on your part because this man's career has spanned seven decades and he has not done many interviews. Amazing.
One of my favorite singers of all-time. Such a huge influence on many singers, including the legendary Jim and Van Morrison (no relation, LOL). And he's still alive. *KNOCKS ON WOOD*

I loved Eric Burdon & the Animals since I was a kid in the 60s. In the late 1990s my lady friend & I went to see him play for the first time in club in Sydney and much to our delight we were invited by the New Animals’ keyboard player to their dressing room after the fantastic concert. Eric was such a nice & humble person and chatted with us for at least 20 mins until the guitar player said it was time to leave. Aynsley Dunbar the drummer was also very cool. We had a photo taken with Eric & he gave us his wooden bead bracelet as a token of friendship and wished us well. I cherish that night to this very day. Saw him play twice again on his subsequent tours down under …

Dylan's version (which is really Dave Van Ronk's version) is nearly as definitive, since Van Ronk was the first one to combine those chords with the melody, and Dylan recorded that before Van Ronk.

Actually, there are a couple of other artists who recorded their versions of this song worthy of hearing. One is a 1960's cover by Frijid Pink--guitar-heavy, hard rock version. Another more recent cover by 5 Finger Death Punch. Both on TH-cam. Check them out...

@@Joe_Goofball I always loved the guitar work in Frijid Pink's version. The album was released in Jan. '70, the 45 was #7 for 2 weeks in Apr '70 (US Billboard). I still have the vinyl LP. There is a site I was on one time that had all the versions (that they could find) of House Of The Rising Sun starting with the original.

Nina Simone recorded it as blues first and The Animals moved it into the rock and roll sphere. I feel blessed to have grown up in SoCal in the 50’s and 60’s so this all feels very personal to me. Eric’s a legend.

@@frankrowland I believe Leadbelly recorded it before Woody. Leadbelly was born in 1888 and died 1949. Woody was born 1912 so let's say he might have been 20 when he did record it so that would put Woody somewhere around the early 1930s.

This song, this music gives me such a wonderful, deep down emotion! Yes those first few notes, and I know what’s coming-an experience that I never get tired of hearing! I still have my Best of the Animals album from my days as a high school girl in CA. -they had that “bad boy” vibe!
We went to see Eric Burden at one of the Arizona Casinos about 6or 7 years ago, and he was in a sour mood that night. Its the only chance Ive had to hear him sing House of the Rising Sun, one of my all time favs, and he broke it up and adlibbed through it. Didn’t want to “do that old sh*t”. Cant tell you how disappointed my Husband and I were!
Glad to see this great interview, since it sort of erases what was to us, an attitude of ingratitude, at the least.
    Alan Price killed it!!!
