Eric Burdon is quite an intellectual. I have seen several of his interviews and noticed he's not whacked out on drugs, he is respectful to the interviewer, he never swears or puts anyone down, and even after all of his accomplishments he is still a real human being, even humble. I love all of his music in all the bands he sang in, I love songs he has written and produced and marvel at his dedication.

I sat in with him on drums at a Capitol Records after-party at the Atlanta Playboy Club right around this time. Grand Funk were there too. They had just done a show together at the Omni Arena. I was playing with Jimmy Witherspoon at the time. He asked me what I wanted to play, I said "See See Rider," & off we went! Scratch one off the bucket list! Eric & Jimmy & War were all managed by Steve Gold, who was there, too. His demeanor was pretty much like it is here: calm, cool, all business. Man, I coulda used more nights like that for sure!

When I was in my mid-teens, I always thought of Burdon as bringing a kind of maturity to a scene and a sound that validated the world for me. All that from just listening to Animals records, which I wore out constantly. It's all stamped accurately by interviews such as this one. That comment about his hometown and how they were the "n" of the working class. I think any working class kid back then sensed that. And the bit about Jimmy Witherspoon getting constantly ripped off. Burdon was (and is) a very class act, all the way through his life.

He has a single that charted in the US called "Working Class Man"! Do you know it? He also sings "Shipping Steel". /Similar to Eric, Jimmy's young parents were poor, from grimy Glasgow, Scotland. They emigrated to another rough, working class area in Adelaide, called Port Elizabeth. Jimmy's career took off around 1975-76 with the Australian band Cold Chisel. They were late teens-twenty when the four band members left in a van for Sydney. I think Jimmy, in his prime, would have duetted brilliantly with Eric Burdon. Jimmy and Michael Hutchence did a chart breaking cover of "Gonna Have Some Good Times Tonight". Worth looking up on YT if you don't know it.
A lot of people act cool but Eric Burdon was the real deal. He was genuinely cool. He just exuded confidence. I've met a few guys like that in my life who are short men but very self assured(not just acting confident). Ronnie Van Zant was another one(short but super cool & confident).
