    I’ve only just realized that the edit of waiting for the second run made it seem like I idled the car for an entire hour. I didn’t! It was off for most of that time while they worked on the track and nobody ran. When I finally went to restart the car, it fired, died, then took 20-25 seconds of cranking to clear out after boiling fuel, then initially wouldn’t idle. I was afraid it would do that again and kill the battery, so I then idled the car as I moved up in the lanes for 5-10 minutes. This was a useful lesson, if nothing else.

    Absolutely fantastic! Thanks for filming your day at the strip. I love that place. It reminds me of the one we used to have just 5 minutes from my house until they built a subdivision close to it and all the residents pissed and moaned until they closed it down.

      They’re all going away. It’s infuriating. Some guys started running some renegade arm drop 1/8th mile at the Elma airport a handful of years back now, and it was awesome. There are a couple houses not far down the road and the people were cool with it at first, but changed their minds for reasons that weren’t entirely clear the second summer it was going on. Of course they didn’t have a permit to do it… or insurance… etc. So thankfully the local government stepped in, saved us from ourselves, and shot themselves in the foot as far as all of those extra dollars from people coming to town were concerned. I’ll give Bremerton as much money as they want to get the chance to run there. It’s special.

    So much to unpack here. For one you have got to stop waiting for the light to turn green to leave 😅 my reaction time on a bad day is .055 to .073. On a good day .005 to .010. My 60ft 1.5. But thats me. I have a few weeks of practice😂. First run shifting was perfect. Then a you tube commercial about stuck poop and i lost it😂. Oh ya comments. The tires braking loose sucked but you left hard and it was the right rpm. Less pressure or some sticks. Last run just didnt count in my book. The track was so packed they burnt ya down before you got to run. Your gonna have to shut the car off next time every time you move. It sucks but she was just to hot. Love the brain bucket. Matches the car. Bottom line you got out there and had fun and nothing else matters. You get a A for effort and a star on your chart😅. Jamie the motor lived, you didnt break anything, ya had fun, saw cool iron, and got home. Its a win❤

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly exactly. Haha. I know what I need to do… I’m just not there yet. Did you notice I double bulb’d the first run? Goobered myself up right there and didn’t have enough time to calculate. Watching this video back was super helpful because I was working out the light timing and was starting to move right when the light went green, but I need to start moving *before* the light turns green to break the beams at the right time. Knowing and doing are a hair different. But I’m getting there. Your patience is appreciated 🤣 and yeah on second run that’s exactly what happened. If I had realized that was a possibility I would’ve had the hood up and pushed it through the lanes. Would’ve been fine. Hey, lessons… pretty sure a carb spacer and a return filter will help. I’ve already got a factory vapor return line so no big deal to add that.
      If I’d had a hair more traction on that first run, everything else was just about right and we’d have a time worth looking at. I had 18 PSI in the rears when I left home, which had come up to 22 by that run. I should’ve double checked when I got to the track. I also should’ve burned them longer. I can tell by the numbers that the time I’m looking for is right there. I’ll get it.

    I’ve seen it happen many times before when people sell their race car. “ oh it runs 11’s”. They you go to the track and run no where near that number. People pull their go fast parts off before they sell. Happens a lot.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s not the case here - but I understand what you’re talking about definitely happens. The car was a class winner in stock eliminator in ‘73. I have a time slip that says 11.88, and it did that with factory heads, intake, carburetor, etc., and 4.88 gears. That was its quickest time - it generally ran more in the low 12s. In theory, the engine combination when I got it (aggressive cam, aluminum heads, better intake, headers) should have been capable of beating the old best time, but the combination just wasn’t working well. With the new setup I put together, it is launching harder, blowing the tires off, and running a higher MPH. I think it’s now capable of the best times the car ever has been. In any case, the common denominator here is me… I’m not the driver Dale is. But I hope to be some day, with some practice.

    • @brianwil89
      @brianwil89 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you do have a traction problem. You’re killing some time there and a driver can make some difference but you seem to be hitting the gears ok. No grinding or missing. But from 14.3/.40s to 12’s is a lot to make up. I think you’ll get there just maybe not with the setup you have. But I hope you prove me wrong.

    82.61 1/8 mile speed should get you a rock bottom 13 in the quarter. If you know how to power brake a stick, or have a line lock, I would wet the tire's then heat them up in second gear until they begin to grab, don't do any dry hop's and when you launch don't dump the clutch, but let it out quickly and smoothly, that should decrease your 60' time a lot, also disconnect the front sway bar, let the car transfer weight , work on learning to power shift, no reason your car shouldn't run mid to low twelves with your current setup , just a matter using the power properly!

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Bingo! That’s what I’m figuring. The speed tells me it’s there - getting off the line is the challenge now.
      I was surprised to see a sway bar on the car at all, but Dale says it has been there since day one… that includes when he lifted the front tires in the day. I had considered removing it previously. Think I will.
      I know I didn’t power shift on these runs, but I have done it in the car during street testing with the new transmission. With the previous floppy shifter setup and dragging clutch… it just wasn’t happening. I had every intention of doing so on the track, but lost my cool after spinning, and then the choking and dying on the second run pretty much killed any hopes of quickness.
      This is the first I’ve had a slower clutch release recommended. That makes a lot of sense as far as reducing tire spin, which is just killing my 60’ time. I do have a line lock, but the button broke - and it was hooked together with a two step. I need to disconnect that anyway. I swapped feet for the second burnout, and the car immediately pushed through the brakes anyway. I was in first gear, and realized watching back that I really needed to be in second. Not enough tire speed, and I was pretty much on the limiter the whole time.
      Thank you for your input! I really appreciate it. There is a lot more to this than is immediately apparent, and advice from people who have been there and done that is extremely valuable to me.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage I'm pretty sure I raced against your car many years ago, might even have some pictures of it! I was very active from the late 70's through the early 2000's at which time my car was stolen, never quite recovered from that... I'll do some looking and see if I can locate some pictures for you. Easing the clutch out will really help, look's like you are shocking your tires right now, once they break traction you lose weight transfer as well witch in turn amplifies the loss of traction. I just got around to watching this newer drag vid with the 360 engine and trans swap, and it sounds a bit better and appears to be an improvement. As for the track time, it's a learning curve and you are learning. Besides a carb spacer, have you thought about running a "Cool Can" for fuel boiling issue ? I dunno if racers still use these, but we did back in the day, and it's kinda easy to even make your own. Good luck at the track the next time, and sorry if my auto trans suggestion insulted you in my last post from your first track outing.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not insulting! And you’re right! Just hope what I’m doing with the car makes sense - I want it to live on as it was. The original engine will be going back in it, maybe this winter but maybe not, and I will likely go back to stock manifolds and dress as well. It was putting down pretty respectable times in ‘73 in that configuration… that’s what I want this car to be. As long as I can improve a bit and not break the car it’s a good day. Cool can is a smart idea. I know people are out there icing down manifolds and running fans in the pits… the guy next to me with that Challenger was boiling fuel too. Definitely wasn’t just a me problem that day.

  • @dirtlump
    @dirtlump ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I Dunno about the 1/8th mile ?
    but in the 1/4 mile, anything Gained or Lost in the 60Ft time can almost be doubled off E.T.
    Just say'in.... those 2.2 or 2.3 second 60 Ft times I think I saw ? are absolutely horrendous !
    60 Ft times are critical to soft averages on E.T.
    I know it's a street car.... I know you like 'driving' it....
    just say'in that with 4.10's/28" Tire and an Auto/3500 stall you'd probably see 60 ft times in the 1.70's translating closer to a full 1 to 1.2 seconds OFF whatever 1/4 Mile E.T. you are extrapolating from the 1/8th.
    Bremerton used to be a fun track.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - you’re exactly right. All of the time I’m losing off of ET is explained right there in those 60 foot times, and those 60 foot times are explained almost entirely by the spinning tires. Also the lack of fuel on the second run didn’t exactly help. This was my second time at a track, ever. The first time I was fighting a horrible bog that made launching extremely difficult, and everything I learned from that was just about worthless after I fixed the bog with a completely new drivetrain combination (which I built myself, BTW) that now makes enough power when launching to blow the tires off - especially on a green track, at the first meet of the season.
      I’m learning. I’m taking everything I have been told by people who know - and everything I’ve learned watching others run - and trying to get down the track in a respectable amount of time. And - I am going to do that with the car the way it was built, and the way it was raced in the day - with three pedals. For better or worse. I will never be the fastest guy and I don’t want to be. I want to be the guy I am - but slightly faster.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage A steel scattershield may be a good option if you like your Toes right where they are and will be pursuing more Track attempts WITH Traction ?
      As soon as you mount Slicks I think Tech may ask for one anyways but I'm not sure about 11 second 1/4 mile stuff and slower ?
      Mainly because as soon as you get traction and if the Tires Hook....and if you have sufficient inertia/power/Torque not to Bog the Engine.... then it's either the next weakest link in the driveline breaks or it'll leave well.
      Trust me.... and IMO,
      have fun at the Strip.... I mean that...
      but forget about that whole 'Sox & Martin" 833 4 spd romantic crap cause in the totality 833 4 spd's are just waaaay slower in the aggregate to ET's than Auto/Convertor setups.
      8700 and change 1/4mile slips later and building HUNDREDS of Competition Mopar Engines for some of the best in Div 6 has learned me LOTS.... either just have Fun and it is what it is.... or get an Auto/Convertor from where you are now if you wanna go faster and save yourself a bundle down the road.
