    What do you guys think of these two cars? A monster vs a demon! The ZL-1 is incredibly rare and doesn't need much introduction. Those Demon/Dusters horsepower ratings were significantly underrated. I still think that the Demon and Duster 340s are the best value for muscle cars right now - great examples are affordable... and fast.

      I had a 73 Duster 340-4 speed. Man I miss that car. Even the low compression 1972-73 340 was a screamer. The 340 Demon/Duster was probably the quickest car you could still buy in the 1972-74 era other than a 73-74 SD455 Trans Am. Neither Ford or Chevy had anything as quick as a 340 Demon/Duster in 1972-73 or a 360 Duster/Dart Sport in 1974

      Marlon Medina even though the 340 Dart had half the torque that the rear ZL1 Super Camaro did, the Dodge 340 gave that 400 thousand dollar Chevy all it wanted. And even beat it 1/8 of a mile half the distance.

      I love those 340 Dart's, Demon's, and Duster's. I had a 73 Duster 340-4 speed. The 340 was an absolute screamer and those cars were so light that they were definitely capable of embarrassing many of the more expensive big block cars of the day. Those 340 powered Mopar's and the Chevy Nova SS 350's are probably the best value on the muscle car market right now

      AZ Independent my first car was a 1972 Plymouth Cuda 340c.i. I raced my friends 73 Firebird Formula 400c.i. At a 50 mph tromp the Firebird pulled about 2 car links and they were 4 people in my Plymouth and only 2 people in his but at 90 mph I caught him and passed him at about 110, I kept it floored to 130 and let off the gas, I remember the white skipped lines on the interstate looked like a solid line at that speed. That was September of 1978 I was 17 years old and no speed rated tires and wasn’t wearing seatbelts looking back it scares me at 58 years old what’s bad is when you’re 17 and your friends are telling you to get him and you can hear your dads voice in your mind when he told you don’t be jerking that car around and at 17 I didn’t realize at the time those 3 kids lives and mine were in my hands. Thank you Jesus for watching over us.

    The Demon makes me remember my neighbor's 1970 Plymouth Duster...it was such an exotic car to my 8-year old self...specially because they were never officially sold here in Brazil, so finding one was like finding a needle in the haystack.
    His car was mean as hell, in a dark grey color, he later repainted it in a pastel yellow, which IMO didn't look as good as the grey...but still badass nonetheless, with the matte black hood and big, 265/40VR16 rear tires, specific for racing, which were like a Formula 1's to me, lol!
    His car had a "humble" 318, properly upgraded with tons of goodies. I don't remember the full list, but among them was a 750-cfm Holley 4bbl Double Pump, Edelbrock intake, M/T valve covers, etc...also had a nasty idle, likely got a big cam and if the heads weren't a set of Edelbrocks as well, they were at least ported and polished. He said it was putting out about 360 hp.
    That was in 1998/1999. I don't know if he bought the car new or used, but up to this day, he still owns the car and has owned it since before I was born, probably well over 30 years now.

      If you could go back to "69, nost likely there would be too many other distractions and you still wouldn't get the car, but maybe you would have got a big block station wagon, yanked the engine and stuffed into a 70's Vega? Wheelie time!

  • @OxBlitzkriegxO
    @OxBlitzkriegxO 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Actual dyno numbers for 340 engines were more like 320hp/360tq for the four barrel and 350hp/380tq. The 340s were severely underrated from the factory, presumably to prevent cannibalization from the 383's sales.
    4 speed cars with a 4.10 routinely ran mid 13s with the autos running high 13s/14.0 on crappy tires of the day.
    The 68 four speed cars had the hottest cam with 276/284 duration and .444/.453 lift. The autos got a milder cam although they were all rated "275hp" with a four barrel carb.
    There's a lot of ignorance and misinformation in the comments section here.

      Must not have been very much competition in your town then. And I actually like the 340 Demon. But they were NOT the fastest or quickest engines/cars to come out of Detroit. That is a fact man. Furthermore, you better watch again & pay close attention & listen closely too, because in this video, the 340 Demon RED LIGHTED.........yet the ZL1 Camaro still won by nearly a full second PLUS 10 mph faster. In ANY class racing the standing 1/4 mile......that is known as getting your doors blown off. Lastly, there are guys who know how to properly launch a car in a drag race, and then there's guys who do not. That also makes a huge difference, as does tires.

I can think of all kinds of packages ALSO modified by a performance shop that I would stake my life on, that would beat it. Man, if you race enough people, there's ALWAYS gonna be some guy out there who has something faster than you, PERIOD. And I wish I had a dollar for every false claim. Like I said: There must not have been very much competition in his neck of the woods back then. I learned all of the above decades ago. If ya wanna drag race, keep it fun.......but when a man starts claiming "fastest ever"........that's blowing smoke, end of story. I LIKE THE 340 DEMON. I LIKE ALL OF THE GREAT PACKAGES FROM DETROIT.

Which I mean by pound for pound is, any car with anywhere close to the same cubic inch engines. Owned it for 7 years and sold it, when they started talking about 2 dollar a gallon gas, in the late 70s. Also, the 12 bolt rear has a chance to live longer w/ the TH400. They were weak as well. I used to Bracket race in the early 70's and at least 1 or 2 GM cars would grenade a 4 speed Muncy or brake their 10 & 12 bolt rear-ends every week.

      B W Gears and tires make a HUGE difference.
      The 1972 340 was a mid 15 sec car. This car pulled a 12.7 ET. So yes, this car was modified. Blueprint/balance, head porting/polishing, ignition/timing tweaks, etc can definitely make a huge difference, but not a 3 second difference. For "just" a pushrod motor, the 340 is a stomping mill.

That’s a little more than $451,000. Lol. On that note there was only 2 1970 Challengers ever built with a 426 HEMI 4 spd convertible. Don Johnson ( Miami Vise ) has one in yellow. He bought it for I do believe over $1,000,000 in 1991. There is no way of knowing how much the car is really worth cause there were only 2 ever built. There is Replicas bringing over $1,000,000 now in 2019. I do love the old muscle cars Dodge, Chevy, Ford. Man those cars were awesome!!!

    Any videos of a 70-71 Torinos with a stock 351 4v Cleveland running against 71 Mustangs with same engine? Manual or auto trans is fine. I just recently bought one of each in the past year. Would love to see the comparsion.
    Torino is GT with an auto C6 transmission...2 .46 first gear 3.00 rear.
    Mustang is a Fastback, not a Mach with the same 351 4v engine except has a manual toploader transmission with 2.78 first gear and a 3.25 rear.
    I'm guessing the Mustang will have the 1/8 and the 1/4.
    I think the Torino will overtake a little over the 1/4. And keep moving away fro. The Mustang. I'm guessing top end would be 130 135 for the Torino and 125 for the Mustang.

    The older the car gets the faster they were according to your fading memories. A 72 Demon 340 4 speed with a 3.55 gear out of the box will run mid to high 14s. To get high 12s we are talking serious serious tuning and mods. Are there tear downs after the races? A super blueprint and balance, super tune, steep gears, internal mods. All things being equal and they never are, you need 10 rwhp per .1 of a second as a rough guide. So you need roughly 100 rear wheel horsepower to drop a second. People, a 13 second car is roughly 4 to 5 car lengths on a 14 second car.

      @the REAL Honest Abe *
      old d-bag? complaining about everything? Can't I enjoy the video? crying like a baby? fucking obnoxious? Grow up?
      What ugly things to say to someone that you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT. Does this mean that we can't be friends Abe? I just don't know if I can bear it, if you aren't my friend Abe.
      I completely and thoroughly enjoyed the video. In fact I've been watching Cars and Zebras videos for at least a year or more and no one has been holding a gun to my head. I even enjoy S1apshoes videos. It never crossed my mind that I should have gotten authority from you before I made a joking comment about a video and stated a true fact.
      See I'm a 100% disabled exmarine. 100% disabled on "9-Apr-2004" (check out the video on TH-cam, you'll see my name listed among the wounded). I had this crazy ass thought that I had some kind of freedom of thought and speech. You know, those inalienable rights, that us Americans think we have, especially since I had to bury 19 of my friends after that day. See I'm don't know anything about this modern day man that talks big and calls someone names long distance over a computer. I'm use to doing it like the Marine Corps taught me back in 1969. You get your gun and your bullets and I'll get my gun and my bullets. You shoot at me. That will irritate me a little bit and then I'll shoot back at you. We can shoot at each other until one of us can no longer answer the call.
      See I might be a d-bag, cry baby ,fucking obnoxious ,old timer that needs to grow up and be a REAL MAN like you, according to you.
      Marines have a saying that, once a Marine, always a Marine. See I might be 100% disabled from defending your rights to try to belittle me but I'M STILL A MARINE. I MIGHT HAVE TO CRAWL TO DRAG MY 70 YEAR OLD DISABLED ASS TO THE FIGHT TO ANSWER THE CALL BUT I'LL CRAWL LIKE A GOD DAMN UNITED STATES MARINE.

That's what this "pure stock" racing was supposed to be, but just like the FAST racing, it didn't take long for guys to realize there were a LOT of modifications they could do and still have the cars look stock enough to pass inspection. What pisses me off is when I see a car that's clearly been modified, like this duster, and guys in the comment section talk like the car was doing that when it was brand new. Some defend their car to the death even when it's a mid '70s, low compression, emission controlled model and they still think low 11s is slow for it.
