      My 2c. DupleXL is a clever name. An XL version of the Duplex, arguably the GOAT dyneema tent and a name familiar to most backpackers in the ultralight and thruhiker audience.

    Would love a video on gear that last forever. Hard to spend hundreds on a bag/jacket/ pad when they barely last. My keens are only 180 but they last thousands of miles and never need break in time, which makes them worth way more than what i pay. A video listing valued items over new stuff would be bitchin.

    I did my first backpacking trip last week on that trail. I saw the aftermath of the storm you went through. It must have been wild! The rangers were talking about 30' waves. I was worried about falling off the cliffs in perfect weather. I can't imagine standing on the edge in those winds. Those guys will have stories to tell for decades. Kudos to you all for making it through that.

    I swear by ZPacks. Not just because their gear is the best on the market, but because their customer support is the best I've EVER found. I've put ~80 nights into my Duplex, 20F quilt, and 62L ArcHaul, all from ZPacks, and I'm hooked. I do not regret a single purchase from them. This years winner for me was the UL Umbrella and shoulder strap. Rain or shine that piece of equipment got so much use this year. You get what you pay for, that's for sure. They continue to innovate. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

    Great overall review of the new gear. It’s always fun to take new gear to see how it works. Provided it works well. Lol. But looks like it all did for you. I agree about the toggle things on the doors. I have a Zpacks Altaplex with the door toggles with the hooks at the bottom to secure it and the screen door that falls to the ground. Recently I bought the Durston Xmid Pro 2 which has the zippers on the vestibule doors and the mesh doors don’t fall down. I think it may have spoiled me now. It like you said, not a major flaw, more like a pet peeve. I like that Cumulus Plancklite jacket. Looks perfect for summer trips.

    Eeeww...I can't believe they got rid of the end wall guy lines. They are so necessary to pull the tent away from your face and hold off the wind. Replaced by a near worthless lower tieout. I'm stunned this worked in wind. We didn't actually see it. I've been in wind set up like you described with decidedly less wind than you saw and still I had to hold the poles that wanted to collapse because the wind was so strong on the sail.....I had to hold it back with both feet. The guy lines were champs under ridiculous conditions. They gotta bring em back.

    Dan,
    As usual, you showed fresh content and always have an upbeat attitude.
    When you showed how the Altra’s blew out on the inner part of the shoe it made me think you need a wider shoe.
    Have you tried any “real” wide toe box shoe like a Lems Primal Pursuit?
    I have them and will never go back to regular or normal pointed toe shoes again.
    Look at your feet, They don’t come to a point in the middle do they?
    They are a trail running shoe that feel like you are wearing a comfy pair of slippers. 😉👍

    If you like the fit of Altras, but not the lack of durability, try Topo shoes. I wore Altra Lone Peaks for the past few years, but tried Topo Terraventure shoes on the advice from triple crown thruhiker Dixie (Homemade Wanderlust TH-cam channel). They fit like the Lone Peaks, but the Vibram soles had better grip and lasted longer, and the upper is still intact, with the exception of the liner in the heel pocket (I wear out ALL trail runners there).
    Montbell makes some ridiculously light gear. I bought a 50 degree rectangular summer bag that unzips to a flat quilt and weighs exactly one pound. I use it as a liner bag to make my 40 degree bag work down to 20, and I can use it up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer (if it's windy).
    Good stuff, Dan! 👍

      Hi I am looking into the panyam. How is it width wise? As I am side sleeper and prefer a bag that isn’t too constrictive. What is your experience with the the temperature rating? What was the lowest temperature you slept in?

    • @frosty9156
      @frosty9156 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Outdoorboy-I am back and side sleeper and found that the girth doesn't feel restrictive for me. I am lean though, so take that into account as well. The model I am using is Panyam 400, rated comfort at -1c and limit at - 6c. With thin liner, thin merino baselayer and hot bottle of Nalgene, I slept at around -5c without any problem. I even had to undo the zipper around shoulder area because it got a little too warm. I am warm sleeper and the tent was a full fabric without mesh so that can be a factor too. To me, I would say the temp rating is quite true. If you plan to use in colder temperature, go for panyam 600 or even warmer one. You can customize the girth, fillpower, length, fabric, zipper etc etc in their website.

      Yes and it has a zippered closure instead of that system on the Duplex. My Duplex is 6 years old and I can’t believe they haven’t changed it. Trying to close the fly from inside the tent (at both attachment points) during pouring rain or high winds is ludicrous.

      For sure the biggest problem with the duplex is closing the fly/vestibule when you’re in the tent.
      Had one clue about the HMG tent. Duplex still has too much life in it, but I’ll look at it

    Oops Gor denier confused with dyneema.🤔 Cool reviews. Question about best month to do the pic. Rocks? The y'all. Guessing June?idk.

    you can get the DupleXL to pack ALOT smaller if you remove the carbon rods and store them elsewhere on the pack. I 3d printed some TPU (soft/flexible plastic) side-by-side joined end caps and store them on the side compression of my pack. I got mine to pack down to almost half the size of what you show next to a nalgene bottle.

      The carbon rods are lighter, pack smaller, and not all of us hike with trekking poles.
      But yeah, the duplex will pack down WAYYYY smaller once you’ve done it a few times. Just a matter of smashing it around a bit to break the material in.

    • @nikosgardenreserve3184

      The carbon rods I'm talking about are on the sides of the tent. I use trekking poles everytime to set up the tent. But those little pull outs on my the sides use a thing carbon rod. That is what I'm speaking on. Sticks would snap in half, 100%.

    • @ridgepath
      @ridgepath ปีที่แล้ว

      Have a Duplex without the rods. A stick - with a little Y at the top end works pretty well…maybe 80% of the time.

    At those specs, consider the Mont Bell to be better than the Ghost Whisperer ONLY if going into extreme cold conditions. You'll get some more warmth, but the extra cost will ONLY be worth it if you're going to be spending a lot of time well below freezing. It's heavier, though only about 1.7 oz claimed weight, and it won't be nearly as small packed down, but the main difference is price and that difference is big. The GW has been around and can be found on sale and even used for a fraction of what that MB jacket costs.
    Bottom line, with a good layering system, the GW is plenty warm. I've been using the GW for years, and I've had it in 0 degree weather and been quite comfortable with a good base- and mid-layer on. So to me, unless you're at extreme elevation or winter camping in the upper peninsula, Mont Blanc is just charging you a major premium for overkill, which is NOT better unless you really need it - if you are sweating under that jacket, you will be MUCH colder when you take it off and that moisture starts to evaporate.

    Hi Dan, new to your channel. Nice channel. Enjoyed the news gear video. Shook my head when you mentioned the new hikers asking where are we. I've tested GPS hiking tech before but I have never needed gps anything in my lifetime as I was born with a built-in gps. I have never been lost in the wild and yes I have hiked off trail. I miss being out there. Nice fall colors in the video. Look forward to the next one.

    Cumulus, here in Europe most people use those sleeping bags.
    Price performance ratio is awesome.

      @@Outdoorboy- I'm not huge but have broad shoulders (109 cm chest) and I don't like the confined feeling. I hated that I kept getting wrapped up and stuck in a normal bag. I think I added 10 cm (I bought it years ago), which enables me to roll inside the sleeping bag without getting stuck.
      Warmth wise it is less ideal but I prefer this.
      Now you have other options but I'm not super comfortable with those unknown.
