I enjoyed this video alot. I think it´s important to show that you don´t need the best and most expensive gear to have a good experience in the outdoors. It´s easy to get a warped view of what kind of gear you need to camp when you see all the people on youtube running around with luxury gear!
I was feeling sentimental tonight and decided to give this a second viewing. Seeing Scout again made me miss him (even though I never met him!), but it made me so happy to see his puppy-like energy again. You and he continue to bring me so much happiness, even though Scout passed ~2.5 years ago. Wishing you and Tripper (and the fam!) well for this holiday season. Take care, and thank you so much for all of the great videos :)
OK, so just put things into perspective! This video is 2.5 hours long and you watch it for it's content, cos it's good content, fine I get that! Then you learn the dog (oops, sorry 'Scout') died, then you decide to watch the video again - not because of the content, but - to reminisce over a dog you have NO personal relationship to whatsoever, you only watched it on youtube?!
Not gonna lie, I stumble upon your channel and now I am obsessed and I love how much you love your dog and how much you know him and care for him, also I love watching you too argue over sticks, he is the goodest of the boys
Finally, thanks Joe i was struggling with depression this last year and then i found your channel and it got me into bushcraft and out of bad thoughts Thanks again Vlad

@Christina Reynolds no, if you are an obnoxious prick like you are, then you can't be anything but sad and lonely. but even tho your behaviour is rude and pointless, i still feel bad for you.

Your strong Joe and I love that you still do what you do you taught me so much by just being you and talking threw a camera, May they rest in peace.
I love how optimistic you are in all of your budget videos. Yes, you can buy the best quality gear and have an amazing experience. But the beginning camper can't/won't do that. They're going to get the budget stuff from where they can get it from. You show the gear in an honest light with out totally mocking it. You also show them that they can be comfortable and get the job done and then that they replace the lower quality gear with the better gear as they can afford it. THANK YOU! How to camp for the EVERY man/woman.
I like how he also went out of his way to make sure to get all of the gear a beginner would want to take with them. If i were doing something similar i would have ditched the tent for tarps, ditched the hatchet for a marginally larger knife, invested in a nicer saw, bought sanitary wipes instead of the first aid kit, brought bandanas, and going off of what i normally eat i would have opted for a small pot that fits over the end of a stainless steel water bottle instead of the cookset. A lot of weight, space, and cost all saved at the expense of a little more work and restrictions on what you can cook. It all comes down to preferences and skillset though.
December 2020- I know you probably don't read these bud, but incase you do- this has always been my favorite video because it's not Joe surviving, not Joe doing some elaborate awesome bushcraft project- Just Joe and ole Scout, enjoying some time in the woods, relaxing and having fun with some one shot equipment and enjoying yourselves. I wasn't around the channel until last night, but from what I hear, your dog passed. I'm very sorry for your loss, and I'll be watching you for a long time.
As a 16 year old kid, obsessed with the camping and bushcraft world i cant tell you how much i relate to the messages in this video. Thanks for showing us that you were there once too. Much love.
Ive been fantasizing about re-introducing the camping of my childhood back into my almost-60 year old life, and stumbled across your channel, then stumbled across this absolutely FANTASTIC gem of a tutorial movie. You make it all so accessible & possible, while demonstrating the kinds of glitches & opportunities that can arise on a typical trip. THANK YOU for this budget-friendly guided tour, and for inspiring me to try to introduce my 10 yr old grandson to one of the chief joys of my own youth. All the best to you & your family! Any plans to do a daddy/daughter camping trip vid? THAT would be priceless!! 😉 Thanks again 🌹💐🌺
24:14 is cinematography genius, Scout sees Joe trying to get the bark separated w/one hand and wasn't having that chit whatsoever... You can't train the kind of fun he had out here on this trip, that's a good relationship with his owner. Cheers Joe and Scout, good one.
I hiked the maddron bald trail on my first backcountry backpacking trip with gear only slightly more expensive than this because it was supposed to be a 72 hour hike, but we were first timers that cut it short.
My sleeping bag was worse than my survival blanket. I am now going to get the skycrane 2 because i am an eccentric bugger that loves going 10% or 100%. Beware of cheap, square sleeping bags from bass pro.
Damn Joe...this came across my auto play feed tonight, I remember watching it near when you released it. I started camping with a buddy in spring of 2018 and pretty much used this as a crash course. Same buddy and I have been going out 10-30x a year since, nothing quite as extreme as you do but we get a short hike and a quiet night in front of a fire. Thanks for the inspiration, it was worth it and I hope you have as much fun as we do.
Joe, I just had to watch this video again to watch Scout's unbridled joy at being in the woods with you and his sticks. He is an inspiration to us all to find joy in the moment. What a great dog..
I bought that same tent from Walmart. The first night I used it, it RAINED, AND RAINED AND RAINED, and that tent kept me DRY all night long. It's a great tent.
My bet is that the deer carcass was placed on those saplings by a human. The force of a deer leaping high enough to get stuck precisely that way would have easily bowed at least one of those saplings down. It's a little too perfect.
Anyone else get super excited when they get a new Joe Robinet video notification? Love what you do Joe, you’ve been one of my big inspirations to start my bushcraft/survival TH-cam channel!
MetalSonic1389 - ME TOO! My Mom passed away 5 days ago and watching Joe’s videos seem to help me, too. Especially the dog! Maybe it has to do with isolation and survival??
I’ve camped in an Ozark Trails 2 person tent from Walmart in some awful weather for about a month twice. It held up very well and only got water in it once because I put the rain fly on wrong just before a big storm. Living out of a tent for a month really makes you appreciate things like electricity and heat!
I love these long videos but omg it takes me days to finish them😂 I watch about 20 minutes at a time and my daughter inevitably needs my attention. It's fun though, kind of like breaking it into a mini series of shorter episodes 😂😂 I am so mesmerized by your videos Joe! It's almost like I'm actually camping when I watch.
My daughter is 15 months old and her father and I are planning to take her camping this summer for the first time! Just at a campground to start out and eventually do some wildnerness camping when she can handle a little hike. I would love to see a video about camping with kids! :D
I struggle with anxiety and I found your videos during quarantine and I d9nt think it could have been a better time. You are very peaceful and relaxing to watch. Nice escape from reality. Plus seeing scout and trip makes me happy :) cute lil doggos RIP scout
All my early camping gear came from Walmart’s too. Wish I could still go camping but I’m 72 now and if I ever got down on the ground in a sleeping bag now, I’d never get up without help lol. Love your videos.
Used that same tent for an urban camping trip. Turned it into a mini hotel for me and my girl. Blow up matress, mini fridge, great memories in that tent.
All the things you do to protect your dog speaks for itself!!!!You are a great Dad! The knowledge that you share is priceless as well. Exception video.... Viewer for life , be well and best of health to you and your family brother.
Joe i have been camping since i was eight years old,and I am now in my late fifties. Here is a few tips. With what you have can last for at least a month or longer. 1.Work on fire wood first,if you polish the saw with fine steel wool remove the finish and carry oil with you, then. your saw would not bind. 2.I am glad that you tested, the fiskars hatchet i am going to buy one. 3.I use a rubber mallet as a batoning tool 4.Put your fire wood and tender in your tent and buy lighters. 5.take the magnesium block home and scrape it down to shavings and fill up a large pill bottle with as many bars as you can and push the rods in there I enjoyed the video and take care of your family.God bless.
@@ThatSB i don't mind carrying a bar and I will use it first and other factory made starters.I am 58 years old sometimes I get lazy and would like to save steps.Even when i am home my mind is always working on making things easier when outdoors.
@@garyprice6550 As for a couple other things you mentioned... I think he uses a flint because he does variations of buschcraft camping and lighters arent that... im sure he knows lighters exist lol. And about the firewood... why do you put that in your tent? I try to keep the dirt bugs and spiders outside the tent... if there was going to be a ton of rain maybe... but if I knew that in advance id just use a tarp
@@ThatSB your right i find no fault with that at all. I read a book when i was 10 about being a mountain man. It Was a hand book that was written by a fur company to give to the trappers who i guess were green horns. That became my camping bible,i have had the wood still be damp under a tarp. I haved tried using a flint and a iron rod too start fires.
@@garyprice6550 like I said maybe in heavy rain. But you keep your wood in your tent all the time? Last thing I need is waking up to a wolf spider on my face lol
Recovering from this broken ankle, tib and fib surgery, got plenty of time for all the Joe Content. I voted yes on this and I’m super excited about it!
You too eh! I'm recovering from shoulder and hip surgery and have all the time in the world to watch these videos too ;). It's great entertainment! Good luck with your recovery.
MDTTE wow I did the same thing on thanksgiving. I broke my tib, fib, and growth plate. Two surgeries later and it’s feeling muck better. Just keep going and it will get better.
Well I’ve been watching your videos for two months now! I can’t believe how much they calm my soul from the irritations of the day. Others refer to them as medicine and I agree. Joe you are a natural. Thanks for doing what you do. Please keep making these. I liked this video because I learned some different features to look for in kit and gear. Thanks to the other commentators because I learn from your comments too.
Just like you I grew up with my dad's boy scout hand me downs & old Vietnam surplus gear. I think the only thing I ever had that was new was a Swiss Army knife I got for Christmas 1 year. Even now my kids have all Walmart gear & stuff that's name brand came from Goodwill. But we lived 4 months in an Ozark Trail 10 person cabin tent with our 2 kids at the time now we have 4 but we all love camping in the deep woods like you. We NEVER had any issues with our tent in the 4 month period in the Yacolt Burns area in Washington's deep wilderness. Oh I actually have 2 of those hatchets from Fisker & I'll tell you after 5 years of constant use & no sharpening, they're still really sharp.
Yeah after reading your comment I checked the channel and it turns out scout is gone, I couldn’t believe he passed away. I hope he’s doing better now though :(
I lost my Shepherd Trudy about 5 years ago… it broke my heart all over again when I heard about Scout. They are such wonderful dogs…good to see this old video with you and Scout.
I totally love Scouts fascination with all things stick. lol. Anyway, your sleeping bag is the second symbol. the 20 to 40 degree c. so pretty sure you are in for a cold sleep tonight
I camped all over the States in a tent almost exactly like that, in all kinds of weather. In fact, I’m still using it, and it must be 25 years old. I have kept up with sealing it, never put it away wet, and always used a doubled over tarp for a ground sheet to protect the floor. The only time I had a problem was when my friend’s mastiff pee’d in the window during the night, but you can’t blame THAT leak on the tent.
I always find myself watching this video in the colder months, all your videos are therapeutic and relaxing but, I always enjoy this one, maybe it is scout? Maybe it is the length of the video, but I just loose myself in this video. Thank you Joe for everything you do, my favourite creator
Joe I think you give a fair and accurate description of Walmart gear. Walmart gear makes up 90% of our gear. We have to go cheaper bc there are seven of us. Is it top quality? No, but you learn to deal. I'm proud of you for heading back to your roots a bit to help out us nubes. It can get a little depressing to watch video after video of stuff I likely will never be able to afford. Thanks! I even saw a couple things to add to our kits!
This is the first video of yours I watched when I was dreaming of back country camping…. 3 years later I’m still watching and I’ve paddled in 3 of Ontario’s provincial parks thanks for inspiration joe keep up the great content!
Reading some of the comments that disagree with Joe's attitude towards subpar camping gear… Although I did agree with everyone at first, you have to take into consideration Joe seems like a quality over quantity kind of guy, and I'm the same way myself… to purchase a piece of equipment for any reason and have it fail as soon as it gets put to use is a kick in the stomach we all have felt before, especially when said equipment is being used by someone alone in the bush ... let's not forget those Fjallraven dubs and Hestra gloves alone cost more than most of us have in our entire Bush craft packs... Joe, in my opinion you have the best channel on TH-cam! Keep it up! -Fan from the Mitten state
Man you're such an inspiration, every time I see your videos I want to take my tent, my boots and just go outside to camp in a new spot. Just wanted to wish you well and thank u for uploading all of these videos, I'm beyond inspired right now... greetings from Mexico! keep it up bud!
Watching in 2024. Just wanted to say thanks, Joe, for all the vids..I never get tired of going back and rewatching the old ones..some real gold in there! Hang in there, dude and be well..and thanks once again and all the content you've produced to date..very much appreciated. 😉👍
Joe Robinet as a side-note, your cinematics are getting better and better... Also your cinematic clips+voiceover, then transition to the present when you’re talking are very professional
used to come across deer stuck like that when canoeing, they'd be hanging from a tree over the riverbank, which looked impossible, until we figured out that they didn't actually JUMP that high - they got stuck in the branches when the snow was deep or frozen on top - they die of exposure or are killed by coyotes, and then the snow melted from under them leaving the bodies hanging high in a tree.
Favorite part is about 31 minutes in... *”I’m ganna sleep in a tent... In a TENT WITH MY DOG!”* It’s great because you can just feel through the screen how happy Joe is that he isn’t bushcrafting or sleeping on a wooden bench. Lol! Love it!
Alright! My week just got a whole heck of a lot better. Might have to watch as a series lol, we are getting dumped on with snow. Really glad to see you out and about man.
I think realistically that saw is meant for branches no thicker than it's blade....and a general anytime cooking tip....potatoes take ten times longer to cook if you don't cut them smaller.
The walmart in my area was getting rid of all the hunting/camo stuff. So everything was on special. Rocky water proof gloves were 9$, i got two other pairs or nice gloves for 3$, a foldable stool for 3$, really nice stuff!
Kev Gunner wish mine was....did get some stuff on clearance....camp cooking kit, small camp stove,a knife, and a waterproof match container for less then $10 total
Sorry for the delay...new computer, ect.
I hope the length is ok...judging from most comments, people were not happy with the last trip being split into a series, so this time I made it all into one long video.

Missing you Scout. So sad that you had to go, but relieved you aren't in pain. R.I.P. buddy ! 🙏🏼💙
Best wishes to Joe and family. 💐
Nothing beats the sound of rain on a tent
John Locke I know I love it
I bought that same tent from Walmart.
Laura Weiss , yup. Too thin. The downward force of a running deer would break those saplings, i would think.
Agreed. Also, the ribs would be facing down/ back and not forward. Also the pelvis is facing up. Definitely placed there.
no expert but was the deer hung like this to be butchered ??
yeap, u can tell by the front legs was butchered right there, took the shoulders, hams and backstrap and left the rest for the yotes.
YEP!
Anyone else get super excited when they get a new Joe Robinet video notification? Love what you do Joe, you’ve been one of my big inspirations to start my bushcraft/survival TH-cam channel!
Your videos are helping me get through a tough time in my life thank you
You have my prayers
AND MY AXE...
(It's a Fiskars X7)
MetalSonic1389 - ME TOO! My Mom passed away 5 days ago and watching Joe’s videos seem to help me, too. Especially the dog! Maybe it has to do with isolation and survival??
Just back to see good old scout again, it's like he'll live forever in the form of videos and memories
🥺 I heard about the doggie while watching this I went through the comments and saw RIP buddy 🕊🖤🥺 amazing video btw 😢🥺🖤
It's fun though, kind of like breaking it into a mini series of shorter episodes 😂😂
I am so mesmerized by your videos Joe! It's almost like I'm actually camping when I watch.
Great to hear 😁
My daughter is 15 months old and her father and I are planning to take her camping this summer for the first time! Just at a campground to start out and eventually do some wildnerness camping when she can handle a little hike. I would love to see a video about camping with kids! :D
smash klowz He Actually has a video call camping with a kid! He also as a few older videos with his wife and kid camping
Elexus T awesome! Im still new to the channel and I guess I haven't made my way to those yet! Ill check them out thanks :D
Joe Robinet hey Joe I live in NC and was wondering if we could do a video maybe together
I struggle with anxiety and I found your videos during quarantine and I d9nt think it could have been a better time. You are very peaceful and relaxing to watch. Nice escape from reality. Plus seeing scout and trip makes me happy :) cute lil doggos RIP scout
The removable lid on the backpack is meant to be used as a pillow once stuffed with clothes.
Scout is more badass than most people I know
Easily one of the smartest dog I've ever seen. I don't think I've seen a dog immediately respond to "dig" or "break it".
Scout is more useful than most people I know lol
All my early camping gear came from Walmart’s too. Wish I could still go camping but I’m 72 now and if I ever got down on the ground in a sleeping bag now, I’d never get up without help lol. Love your videos.
With you there. Thanks to vids like these we still get to go.
Used that same tent for an urban camping trip. Turned it into a mini hotel for me and my girl. Blow up matress, mini fridge, great memories in that tent.
You skin a deer starting exactly where the fur stops on those hind legs. That deer was shot, skinned, gutted, quartered, and packed out
Coray Marugg yummy
Kind of hilarious that he thought it had jumped into the tree and just died there. LOL
Kwake shit had me dead😂
Yeah but he should of known someone put that there. The damn thing didn't get stuck on that twig and die lmfaooo ppl these days man..
if it was quartered the legs would be gone
All the things you do to protect your dog speaks for itself!!!!You are a great Dad! The knowledge that you share is priceless as well. Exception video.... Viewer for life , be well and best of health to you and your family brother.
I had to come back on the older videos to see scout. He was a beautiful dog 🐕 You gave him a great life man 💯
Just wanna say I’m here because you ask us to watch your old videos 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 hope this helps
3.I use a rubber mallet as a batoning tool
4.Put your fire wood and tender in your tent and buy lighters.
5.take the magnesium block home and scrape it down to shavings and fill up a large pill bottle with as many bars as you can and push the rods in there
I enjoyed the video and take care of your family.God bless.
no offense but putting magnesium in a pill bottle defeats the purpose of having it as a bar
Enjoyed watching this while boiling down my 3rd batch of maple sap. Good way to pass the time on double shift.
your maple sugar vid is up next XD thats cool
You guys should do a collab
The Wooded Beardsman I'm
The Wooded Beardsmarrrz lol
The Wooded Beardsman you guys should do a video together 💯‼️
I always get really calm by watching your video's
I had a Coleman nap sack for about 15 years. Eventually the zipper broke, but it was sooo good.
A Joe & Scout movie night...love it!! The longer the better, hate the short clips.
Broke my back last May Joe kept me going all this time ,going for a long walk this summer ☺
Franken Stein thanks! Same to you!
Long Slong69 had the second surgery 2 weeks ago, feeling better and can’t wait to get back outdoors
I agree.😊
Rip scout I love you xx. Thx so much for 100 likes but I can't belive she's gone it's so sad as again love u scout
Kadie56655 Is a noob lol what he’s alive
Rexares 7 he's not 😭 love u scout xx
Yeah after reading your comment I checked the channel and it turns out scout is gone, I couldn’t believe he passed away. I hope he’s doing better now though :(
WHAT?!?!? SCOUT’s GONE?!? :’(
Why did you say she? Scout’s a boy
No the REAL challenge is to pay NOTHING and camp for 24 hours IN the Walmart
Dougie Quick xDDDD
@WitShutup the challenge was to spend all the $500. For 24 hours $50 is more than enough.
Yea he could have spent half as much and been fine. The Fiskers axe and pot set are keepable items.
Absolutely.
Going back and re-watching all the oldies with Joe and Scout :D thanks for all your hard work Joe, cheers!
I lost my Shepherd Trudy about 5 years ago… it broke my heart all over again when I heard about Scout. They are such wonderful dogs…good to see this old video with you and Scout.
All dogs go to heaven... especially scout you will be missed):
What happend

Catherine Moore
Hhh
I always find myself watching this video in the colder months, all your videos are therapeutic and relaxing but, I always enjoy this one, maybe it is scout? Maybe it is the length of the video, but I just loose myself in this video. Thank you Joe for everything you do, my favourite creator
I love how scout always seems to find a way to stand nonchalantly between you and the camera lol
You should train scout to pick up the firewood and pile it next to the tent
Mateo Goodhue the dog is not a robot lol
Check out the dollar store challenge!
Also I have the exact same tent... In red! Lasted me about four years and still going. I run it through the ringer, too!
Keep it up!

Good Man Chris! .. Blessings from Oregon, ... Mike.
why do you bring an axe if your dog can snap trees
lmao 💀💀
Man you're such an inspiration, every time I see your videos I want to take my tent, my boots and just go outside to camp in a new spot. Just wanted to wish you well and thank u for uploading all of these videos, I'm beyond inspired right now... greetings from Mexico! keep it up bud!
Watching in 2024. Just wanted to say thanks, Joe, for all the vids..I never get tired of going back and rewatching the old ones..some real gold in there!
Hang in there, dude and be well..and thanks once again and all the content you've produced to date..very much appreciated. 😉👍
When scout pulled the tree for you...aww
Watched from beginning to end, loved it, Scout seemed extra excited this trip
he sure was!
Joe Robinet as a side-note, your cinematics are getting better and better... Also your cinematic clips+voiceover, then transition to the present when you’re talking are very professional
He was definitely into that steak
😂 definitley, Scout’s got alot of fans lol
doubt the deer would have stayed up with meat and head. looks like a post mortem placement
Yeah pretty sure that deer was probably cleaned right there, hung up after they removed the head etc. Def didnt get caught like that.
Did the ribs look like they were the wrong way? My ges is that someone took it or poached it. Then took the meat they wanted and left.
used to come across deer stuck like that when canoeing, they'd be hanging from a tree over the riverbank, which looked impossible, until we figured out that they didn't actually JUMP that high - they got stuck in the branches when the snow was deep or frozen on top - they die of exposure or are killed by coyotes, and then the snow melted from under them leaving the bodies hanging high in a tree.
Someone put him there as a warning to stay out of the woods ..Lucky this didn't turn out to be a found footage film.
Just kidding love his videos
I love to go back and watch old videos with scout!! Worlds greatest dog
That was clearly a sasquatch leaving the deer like that.
gaschwarck Samsquanch
gaschwarck silly me 😁
Ben Huntley it's a samsquamch ricky!
Well it's official, boys. Looks like we got are selves a freakin samsquanch...
Haha 69 likes, that’s a sex thing
Favorite part is about 31 minutes in...
*”I’m ganna sleep in a tent... In a TENT WITH MY DOG!”*
It’s great because you can just feel through the screen how happy Joe is that he isn’t bushcrafting or sleeping on a wooden bench. Lol! Love it!
Matt Alexander and he’s not on stupid games like other idiots, love to see him out out here!
Scout is such a majestic dog
R.I.P Scout chase all the sticks in heaven bud you anr a good boy. xxx
Alright! My week just got a whole heck of a lot better. Might have to watch as a series lol, we are getting dumped on with snow. Really glad to see you out and about man.
Scout is like a nosey younger sibling constantly trying to see what your doing when your by yourself in your room
Just you can't be mad at him
I think realistically that saw is meant for branches no thicker than it's blade....and a general anytime cooking tip....potatoes take ten times longer to cook if you don't cut them smaller.
Yay another scout video! Oh and I guess joe is in it as well.
No joe is not in this vid
Found this guy today...haven’t stopped watching him. Congrats for making such a cool TH-cam channel
❤❤❤just to see scout again
Watching this today, Christmas Day 2019 bought tears to my eyes. Your beautiful dog scot. I feel your Los Joe. Rest in pease Scot.
