  • In this third video of the Prairietown Dreaming series, we talk about the minority experience and economic opportunity issues in the region. This is serious stuff, I do my best to bring you some accurate information on complex issues, but I know my perspective is far from the only valid perspective here. Mike comes in around minute 10 to share about his and his family's experience in the region, as well as offer his superior knowledge of American history and migration patterns.
If you want to get more info on this, I'll be producing some more Prairie Pothole Region stuff for a closed interest group, alongside putting together an in-person Iowa meetup. If you're interested, share your email address on the form here:

@hugocast you're welcome- and I hope you do visit, it's a beautiful place! If you like the outdoors, Ledges and Backbone state parks are both excellent places for daytrips.

I always love your material. My people are Sicilian by way of Brooklyn and California. I have a Polish Jewish side of the family from my Great Aunt Hilda - they got out just in time. My father-in-law is a second generation native born American from Los Angeles, but spent four years in a detention camp in the desert with his family during WWII because he was Japanese. I rarely fear individuals, but when it comes to organized groups I prefer to err on the side of caution and have one foot out the door - just in case. I could live almost anywhere so long as a have a second and third passport...

Thank you- and what a cool family story you have! I hear you on the organized groups... people will do things together they'd never do alone.

What is the job outlook like for healthcare professionals?

@unicornrainbow222 I'm not too familiar with the industry, but I think pretty good. I had that surgery back in late January that resolved 14 months of pretty serious illness, and figuring out what was wrong took me through quite a few different places in the regional medical system. The systems had good communication with each other and the healthcare workers seemed much less stressed than they did in the Chicago area- and I'm talking about before covid, there.
In eastern Iowa, the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, and St. Lukes in Cedar Rapids, are both major employers that are known to have good benefits.
