    Best router sled design I've seen, and I have been researching. Perfect for my small projects but I can scale up.

  • @mitch3384
    @mitch3384 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

    I went down this path when I was going to be thicknessing slabs for guitar bodies. This is a REALLY good approach, easily scaleable. One warning though: make sure the planer bit you buy for milling is designed for the application, specifically RPM. 15 years ago there was a bit with 3 individual replaceable blades that was designed for drill press RPM ranges (discontinued now). There were a number of cases in the DIY luthier community of people using it with their 1/2" routers and the bit would fly apart under high RPM and cause injury. If in doubt, go for a smaller diameter bit designed for purpose and use more passes.
    Love what you did here brother, excellent build.

    • @rauladame2105
      @rauladame2105 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      WOW! Outstanding call out! This closed system seems like would offer some protection from the catastrophic failure of a bit. I am wondering if some good leathers, for welding, will help as safety gear I use for this type of wood working. I will pay attention to the RPMs to avoid wrecking my day. Thanks again.

    • @rauladame2105
      @rauladame2105 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This warning got me thinking I don't remember the rpm of my tools. I am going through my manuals to revisit rpm of my tools to prevent a "day wrecking" event. Awesome call out 👍

      @marvzjp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rauladame2105 there is an unspoken rule of not to use gloves when working with a rotating tool. Keeps all finger attached to the hands.

    • @bobdebouwer7835
      @bobdebouwer7835 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always check the rpm for a bit. The larger the bit the more danger there is.

    • @davidelliott5843
      @davidelliott5843 ปีที่แล้ว

      Broken bits can happen any time. Heavy PVC (e.g. curtain side truck body material) can be used over the job each side of the sled. These will catch flying debris and will reduce dust. You could also cover the gaps between the sled rails, but it's going to be a pain to use. In any case, the narrow gap is unlikely to let high speed shrapnel exit the table.

I changed the dimensions a bit to meet those of the Ryobi router I bought yesterday as well. I’m definitely going to build and add this to my arsenal soon. I started using it on my current project, instead of free hand drilling and when I was done, I was happy with the results. The PDG is expensive but the benefit in the higher level of quality of my projects will improve and pay for itself. I appreciate this this post.

And drilling it to attach the fixed base for the router is a great way to have a quick and easy set up without losing your router for other applications! I’m sure you picked up a few new subs from this project, including myself. Well done.

    Great build as always. Make sure to get a Planing Router Bit for this and don't use a dado bit. While the dado will work, it leaves a pretty rough surface. Plus a decent planer bit will take off a wider swath of wood. Other tip, as I do a LOT of this, plane one side until you cannot see any more non-planed areas then flip the piece over. At this point, hot glue is good for holding down the piece and getting rid of those bulky (but nice) clamps. To remove the hot glue, spritz it with 90% rubbing alcohol and it will come right off. Thanks again for the great build!
