I can't explain why but I was never able to enjoy new horizons the way I enjoyed new leaf. I used to play new leaf for hours a day and 1 am was always the hour I used to wrap things up. I don't get what I was doing at night because no one is awake anyway, yet I did this for at least a year. All these years later I decided to learn to play piano and one of the first songs I learnt was the 1 am tune from new leaf. I still play it every now and then at night, the nostalgia always hits me.

New Leaf will forever have a special place in my heart: since I couldn't afford to get a switch back when pandemic was happening I decided to get New Leaf instead and play it on 3DS - everyone was talking about New Horizons as I remember Marshal was one of the more "famous" villagers at that time and he just so happened to be on my island as soon as I started the game - I will forever cherish those days spent with him, Beau and Fang!

This game has a magic New Horizons never had imo, and personally, I think New Horizons gives the player far too much power. New Leaf gives the player power but a substantially lower amount, and that's a good thing. I'll always love New Leaf far more.

    • @scientistservant
      @scientistservant ปีที่แล้ว +70

Exactly! I feel that giving players too much power makes the game both overwhelming and boring. I like how in New Leaf you can enact public works projects but you can only have a specific amount around the town. You also aren’t able to choose where your neighbours place their homes, because… why would you be able to do that 😂 Because life isn’t like that! New Horizons doesn’t feel like a life sim to me, but New Leaf does.

the limits and inconveniences in acnl were annoying and i always said i wish i didnt have to go through all that, but now that most things are so streamlined in acnh it doesnt really feel like the animal crossing experience anymore. you dont have to communicate with npcs as much but thats kinda what made me play the game more because it really did feel like seperate world.
i could talk about animal crossing forever 😭

    • @peyton1768

@@loadishstone because it's easier to notice what they didn't add compared to what they did add. The massively expanded upon designing the town would've been amazing had there actually been anything to fill it up with, but there were like 2 shops at the beginning of the game and no good dialogues from the villagers to be seen.
You can put the shops basically wherever you want, but you don't actually GET that animal crossing feeling from the shops in this game, it's like a bunch of half-baked versions of each shop, and half the characters who owned shops don't even show up on the island. They took the island getaway vibes they were going for a bit too seriously because it looks like a complete trainwreck when you first get there. The shops are a mess in New Leaf at the beginning too, but then you actually see a bunch of new stuff pop up as you go. Brewster took forever to show up in acnh, I never saw him bc I stopped playing by the time they added him to the game. Do you know how satisfying it was in New Leaf to get Gracie to show up in the TNT emporium? if there were that many upgrades to the shop in this game, I definitely would have at least 50 hours more of acnh just from that alone because upgrading an island from the ground up sounds extremely satisfying.
As I was saying in the previous point, starting from the ground up is fun, but it felt like I was forced for months to build a house myself while I waited to get shipped the materials, while New Leaf was more... getting the foundation of a home from the start and then working on it to make it into a mansion. I don't think it would've been as detrimental to the quality of the game if we got all of the materials from the start (or at least been able to work towards GETTING the materials), but having to wait for months for the opportunity to even create the bare minimum of a proper town is a no from me. I think this is partially why so many new players loved the game while older players were like: "Where the hell IS everything?" because the Island designing concept for a new animal crossing game would've been amazing if we actually got the chance to get everything we expected from it.
When I started I was so excited to upgrade the shop, but then I was thinking "What the fuck do I need to do to upgrade the nooks cranny again?" i spent 100k and 15 google searches later to find out that there literally wasn't any other upgrades. One of the other things I loved about new leaf was perfect fruit, and I was so disappointed to find out we couldn't plant a bunch of trees and then go off to someone else's island to sell them all because it felt so much more interactive than buying turnips. It's so much easier to get money in acnh, yet there isn't even anything to spend it on. (Loved blowing all my money at gracie's stores, that shit was so overpriced yet I ate it up every single time, it's what I would do irl if I wanted to go homeless. Is that what being rich feels like? bc it's amazing.)
Finding out there was no Brewster or Gracie, I was DONE. (jk i still played 65 hours or so, but still) Like I kind of love the Brewster inside the museum vibe too, so I'm sad it took so long for him to show up.
Long story short, acnh is a great game, but not a great animal crossing game.

When my wife and I first married, she bought her first 3ds, and we played this game a lot. In many ways, this game is better than New Horizons. One thing severely lacking in New Horizons that I love about this game is the sheer amount of music, ambiance, and dialogue with the NPCs. My favorite, Henry, just doesn't feel the same in the new game. I feel nostalgic when I turn on new leaf every once in a while.

Totally agreed, would also completely get rid of crafting and just buy stuff. Crafting, esp without bulk crafting, was a huge disappointment. You’re also right that new leaf had a lot more furniture. New horizons was too focused on the realism, and changed the furniture to look simpler so that it is believable that the player could’ve possibly crafted it. Getting rid of the furniture series sets was and still is infuriating to me. I want to see beautiful new versions of the furniture sets we’ve had in every past animal crossing game, not ugly simpler versions of a few sets and completely getting rid of the majority of the furniture series! There’s no late game in ACNH, no Gracie furniture to collect…. just so much disappointment, even though there were many enjoyable things about the game. Acnl is still #1.

I got the ps2 sometime during primary also and soon as highschool hit i lost interest in games and was more interested in girls. As highschool went on i found myself playing a lot of ipod games like fruit ninja, clash of clans and doodle jump etc. I also got the ps3 and was constantly playing call of duty with my school friends. However my little sister who was 5 years behind me got the ds then the dsi and then the 3ds etc etc. I used to sit and play the layton games with her when she got stuck on the puzzles (i finally revisited the curious village and completed it). Anyway im getting off topic here, one of the things i loved most was playing animal crossing with her, fishing, catching bugs and digging up treasures. I really love my hacked 3ds, as far as nintendo goes, the 3ds is by far my favourite over the switch and gameboy. Just an amazing and gorgeous console and all the games hold up! I kind of remember getting New Leaf alongside my brothers when the game initially came out. over here in the UK, i think they might have been doing some Nintendo VIP-type (slightly like america's Club Nintendo) thing where if you registered 3 or so specific 3DS games (out of 8?) that you could get one digitally for free. coincidentally, a bit later, i think Capcom had a thing where people registered Monster Hunter Ultimate 3, then they'd get a digital code you'd hand to a friend, granted that they only recently registered their 3DS. i'm not even sure if the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate thing resulted in perpetually-reproducable copies or what, but the game itself was one of those 8 games you could've used.
I would assume that Nintendo would distinguish between people either getting the game either Physically or Digitally (since they'd have VIP codes). then you give the recconmendation code to the person who'd get a code to redeem it digitally.
was kind of full of evergreen titles like Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem Awakening, Mario 3D Land, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, Lego City Undercover, Luigi's Mansion, Monster Hunter and Castlevania: Mirror of Fate...? the physical sales for Mario, ACNL, FE and MH3U that i could honestly see everyone having to pick 1 game they begrudgingly obtained. could've sworn Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D was one of them.

One of the reasons I adore New Leaf much much more than New Horizons is the music. New Leaf’s soundtrack is calming and happy, with a lot of piano and guitar. New Horizons’ music meanwhile is way too busy and loud. It’s not relaxing booting up NH after a long day, the title screen music sounds like something that should be in a crazy, late-night island party or something.

I remember really wanting to play Sim City back when that released back in 2013. I didn't have a powerful PC, but I did have a 3DS, so while browsing in a GameStop, reading the back of the boxes, I bought the first game that sounded like Sim City. Animal Crossing New Leaf. That was June 21st 2013. I was upset at first because it wasn't what I thought it was, but I soon learned to adore this game and I've been a diehard fan ever since

I sometimes just turn on the 7pm new leaf music while I’m cooking or reading, it’s just so peaceful and relaxing! New leaf to me just feels like home, I usually play new horizons when I’m feeling more creative rather than in need of some coziness 🙈☺️

I'll never forget the day I was introduced to Animal Crossing. I was 8 in 2002 and I went to the living room to watch Saturday morning cartoons and I saw my eldest brother hooking up my GameCube to the TV and he had just gotten the game. And was telling me about it and at first I didn't care for it but I started playing it and I was hooked and so was my sister. I still have the copy he got all those years ago in my game collection but the disc is broken but the memory card still has the saved states on it. I wanna get the disc but it's kinda pricey online idk I'll get it one day. I have Wild World and New Leaf and I was playing it again a few days ago. It holds a special place in my heart I just love animal crossing.

I liked my house that I designed in New Leaf better than my New Horizons home. And yes, Tortimer's island was the BEST! Sharks and beetles in the evening.
new Leaf also had the best music all around. You could also upgrade main street.

I feel like there is a huge difference between the feeling of "moving into an existing town" like in all the other AC games and just building up everything from zero like in New Horizons. I think that this is a big chunk of why New Leaf just feels better than New Horizons, in my opinion. Great video!

New Leaf with New Horizons graphics including animation would be perfect. NL just looks a bit stiff animation-wise. Also don't like the restricted slots inside the bag. Touch screen is also a nuisance. I really enjoyed NH much more than NL. After watching videos like yours maybe I should give NL another try.

so new leaf is the one animal crossing i havent played because i never had a 3ds, i was in highschool at this point and was all about pc gaming by then, really feel like i missed out the more vids i watch XD now i have a modded 3ds and am LOVING the games on it, so many i just completely missed out on. when you said the thing about the fact that you can just buy what other people have furniture wise in their house is soooo cool, the more stuff i see about the 3ds makes me REALLY sad i missed it and even more sad that none of it exists on the switch.... its kind of mind blowing how restricted it is compared to a console that was released BEFORE by decent amount of time, a real shame. the streetpass is one thing im really bummed i missed out on, i got the dlc for mii plaza from hshop just in case but i doubt ill ever actually get a streetpass from it lol, but i guess you never know!

I bought a 3ds recently after borrowing one to play new leaf on, and ive been having the time of my life. The game is 1000x better than NH in every way, theres always something to do and dialogue for characters is never dry. i recommend estarland to buy a ds + ac from. Spent roughly 218 on my ds! [3DS XL] and NF goes for 30 new but preowned is 16-12!

I played ACNL in high school on the original 3DS I got for my birthday. I enjoyed New Horizons very much, but New Leaf is my favorite by far. The NPCs have so much more life to them. I've purchased a New 3DS XL for modding, and this is the game I'm most looking forward to playing.
Some summer days were spent counting down the hours until the beetles would start spawning on the island. At school, when there was nothing to do, my friends and I would visit each other's towns. It was wonderful.
I also discovered the spot pass houses while I was at a convention one summer. (RTX, if there are any Rooster Teeth fans in this comments section.) People made their own QR codes and rooms based off the content creators we were all seeing. Many many people took their DSs with them, and I played a round of Mario Kart with like 8 other people. While waiting for a panel to start I had the ultimate shopping spree in the housing area with Digby.
I also love Halloween dearly and remember trick or treating in game with my cousin once I was too old to not get a glare or two in real life.
Good memories and good gameplay. It's a great combo.

There's a lot of little things that new leaf got right that just weren’t in new horizons which made it the better game imo.
I didn’t really gel with the desert island setting, the music was weird and synthesized, the holidays felt lacking and there were overall fewer of them, just smaller details that combined to make an overall less pleasant experience.
And that's not even mentioning the bigger problems like tool durability and an overemphasis on crafting/foraging that I just feel negatively impacted the game as a whole.
Also...why did the nooklings' store only upgrade once? And even then, why did the upgrade only barely outclass its predecessor?

I bought New leaf and played it for like a month but put it down after not being able to put furniture outside and having what seemed like limited amount of storage inside. Absolutely love Animal Crossing New Leaf, but as someone who does not own New horizons, it does hurt dealing with all of the limits in the form of PWPs and custom designs. So many things I want to do that are locked away. Once I complete ACNL again, I will see about getting a switch and ACNH, hopefully for reasonable price.

  • @1bwash
    @1bwash ปีที่แล้ว

I think New Horizon's could have and should have easily implemented more paths for players. The standard is the player basically chooses where everything goes, but they could have added another option where the game can preset where the buildings get placed (like a mainstreet is automatically created for you). And the same thing with things like changing your appearance, they should have let you have the mirrors and stuff but then also have it be an add-on to an existing shop where you can go to a salon. But maybe that's the whole point of New Horizons, they want it to always be an under developed island.

I think one of my least favourite parts is one of the biggest features of New Horizons: the crafting. It's clear the developers put a lot of time into the system but I feel severely underwhelmed by how it works. Crafting tools is fun until you get the golden tools and realise that those break too. And having to find individual recipes was really annoying because the game didn't care about giving you duplicates. I'd much rather just find the items themselves. But some of the funnest memories included my brother and I going to the club at night and pretending like we were going out. And even alone I would be able to enjoy the game for hours a day because I just felt like another villager and not some super special entity that has full rein of whatever I wanted to do. It was a great game but Nintendo really set us up for disappointment by guaranteeing updates that just added pre-existing features. I'd have preferred having those older features in day one and them adding actually new content or things like more store upgrades rather than crafting and terraforming.
