(17:09) Did you try switching to Poliwrath to have it take the incoming Sky Attack in those situations? (19:43) Ooh, a Regigigas run does sound interesting.
Having a bit of Poliwrath grinding is smart, you could easily level up some in Victory Road as it's so underlevel. More health plus a last-ditch Seismic Toss is fine
Yeah, this run would definitely be harder in other generations with type matches actually affecting these moves, and no "good" AI that will spam Rest and Agility against a Ghost type, lol. Would love to see you do this run again in gens 2+ :)
As someone who's dabbled in competitive gen 1 before, i'm gonna guess that you're wanting to use that seismic toss tm on chansey, which i was expecting too lol
The pokemon world is a world where elemental energies exist. Tackle is a standard attack containing no elemental energies. Rock Throw contians elemental energy, and that's why they can summon rocks in the middle of the ocean.
That actually went better than I thought it would. I knew he would encounter the damage scaling problem, especially in the mid game, but early game went a bit smoother than I thought it would. Though some of those battles (Erika and Lance especially) went so well because Gen 1 A.I. is nonsense, so I wouldn't expect similar results in later generations. As for the Regigigas run... I can see that one being either easy or hard. Regigigas is among the Pokemon whose ability is designed to weaken it (in this case Slow Start, which halves Attack and Speed for 5 turns, resets upon a switch). So it won't be hitting too hard, even with level ups. Oh and they don't let Regigigas have Rest or Protect until Generation 8, so no recovery outside of Drain Punch and berries, thus stall tactics are out the window. All that said, Regigigas still has insane natural bulk, and even after Slow Start its Attack is still quite usable for a playthrough. And if MDB can get his hands on some Heart Scales he has access to the elemental punches, which gives him great coverage options. Not sure if it'll be easy, per se, but it is perfectly doable, and could be fun. Longman comment over, thanks to MDB for this video. Staying tuned!
I doubt this will ever be a challenge video but I'd like to see a: Can I beat Pokémon (whichever game) with only Male/Female exclusive Pokémon. By this I mean Pokémon that can only be one gender, so a Male only run would be Pokémon like Nidoking, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Tauros, etc. Then a Female only run would be Pokémon like Nidoqueen, Chansey, Kangaskhan, Jynx, etc.
The picture actually made me wonder, ever done challenge runs of the card games? Would that be a good idea? or a terrible one? might be worth having a look, those games have big nostalgia factor, wish they'd make newer ones
Random words of the "Day"™: day 618, 619, 620, and 621: Registration, Taskmaster, Governance, Tenderness I almost spat out my water when I heard "Pokemon Platinum with only one Regigigas". I can't wait to see how fast or slow that challenge will be. It would be ironic if it was a fast challenge
My guess for the seismic toss TM is either the static Snorlax or Chansey if you want to grind in the safari zone. Both have high hp and special to tank late game foes like Lorelei
Honestly I was surprised it wasn't Drowzee as your second pokemon considering how bulky their evolution line is and them resisting psychic would help. But maybe the grinding of the second pokemon would be more time consuming than just getting as high of a level as you can on Haunter.
I find the fact wrap doesnt work on but still stuns ghost types funny. And the only time i've seen this before was the last time ghastly was used in gen 1, 3 years ago
I have a challenge for thee: a pokemon playthrough where when your pokemon levels up even once from what you caught or received it as, you have to box or release them asap and are no longer able to use them going forward. I honestly have no idea if it's even vaguely feasible. Feels like a earlier gen would be the best bet. The modern games exp share would be horrible. Cheers!
I’d love to see a gen 3 run with just these moves. I have a feeling that the pressure dusclops in the elite 4 will force you to train more than one Pokémon.
This has given me an idea for a challenge, or potentially a series of challenges: only using moves that don't follow the standard 'one turn, one hit' rule. There's multi-hit moves like Fury Attack and Pin Missile, multi-turn moves like Rollout and Thrash, and 2nd turn moves like Dig and Fly.
YES! I've always wanted to see/try this. At first blush it seems viable but levels/self-imposed caps can really mess with things, etc... plus I dunno really how much health the higher level guys have towards the endgame, but still I think this is winnable for sure.
I am guessing a Chansey or Snorlax for Seismic Toss because they are bulky with HP or bulky with Defense & HP. After all, Seismic Toss is Level Damage and so a minimum of 26 or 30 when first caught so guaranteed 26 or 30 damage per hit.
I REALLY like the thumbnail for this video, seeing the Pokemon cards there fills me with so much nostalgia. I look forward to maybe seeing them pop up a bit more??
I see that it takes more time to level more pokemon, but whenever you have a run when you could potentielly use more then one and then you use only one in the end, it's pretty boring. This was almost a just haunter run in the end. Couldn't you find a sismic toss user that wasn't weak to psychic? That would have made it more usefull. I think this idea could be more intresting in later generations. Also I think Balne was using ember a few times because the AI knows when low accuracy moves miss before they use them, so they choose another move that hits at that point. I was just wondering what he'd done if you USED THE WATER TYPE. Maybe just roar? At least it would have resisted the fire moves (has Blane a "smart" AI?) But of course it would have needed a decent level. Missed opportunity here as well, I think.
It'd be interesting to see how a run with the same rules would work in gen 3. You'd have exp share so you can have a proper team but there are more moves that can hit your ghost types and AI that doesn't use items at stupid times
I think wasps are weak against rock, fire, and poison in this gen. Low base defense, but they do attack in swarms. be safe and assemble a good team! Maybe ask that Regigigas if they can help..
Looking forward to the Regigigas run! The fridge saga has reached its conclusion! Woohoo! Oof about the wasp nest though. Hope that gets sorted out quickly.
I don't know why, but I thought the most recent fallout run was the automatic recharge guns. I guess the stealthy silencer run was more effective than you thought.
Video idea - can I beat Pokemon (insert gen 3 or 4 game) using Pokemon and moves from card packs You would buy a fresh box of Pokemon cards and open like 10 packs of Pokemon cards only using the Pokemon on the card and only using the moves that have on the card. You cannot evolve the Pokemon on the cards nor could you use any other moves but you can use duplicates if you get duplicates.
I'm glad you finally got to Seismic Toss your dead fridge outta there! Uh Good luck with the wasp nest though ghfdjkghdfkj also the entire time, either i just completely forgot what Gen 1 Ekans looked like, or i never paid attention, but that sure is a look. It sure has a face.
05:44 My (possibly very lame) answer is this: Maybe each Type has its own different magical energy signature, and this energy is what's actually doing HP damage instead of the physical/material properties of the attack. So a Rock Type attack has Rock Type uses Rock Type energy and a Normal Type attack uses Normal Type energy, regardless of whether the Pokemon itself is litterally made of rocks. It also explains why a Pokemon like Beedrill or Venomoth, who have neither the Flying Type nor the Levitate Ability, can be hit by Ground Type attacks, dispite actually flying.
It would've been smarter to catch a Drowzee and teach Seismic Toss to that, as it resists psychic moves instead of being weak to them like Haunter and Poliwrath. The same can be said of the Abra line, but I know how much you like Drowzee.
Once he hit that rival fight with Alakazam I immediately thought the same thing. I love the look of Poliwrath but having another Pokemon weak to psychic moves wasn't going to help much. Lol. Makes it a lot harder in a run where he can at least have two decently leveled Pokemon for resistance coverage.
Fun fact, Exp share and Exp All are called the same thing in Japanese, so in a sense "Exp share" actually exists in Gen1. Exp share was intended to function as a key item that shares experience with your whole team. This made the localizer named the item as "Exp All" in Gen1, but had to change the name to "Exp Share" in Gen2 when it became a held item. So in a sense, the Exp share from Gen6 onwards actually reflects the initial idea of Exp Share in this series.
@@BmanTheChamp That is true. Doesn't change the fact that it was intended to share exp with your whole team though, just functions differently by the actual numbers.
You know what I'm surprised hasn't been done yet? A Pokemon challenge run using only "not very effective" moves. Think you've got the skills to pull it off, MDB? ;)
I thought you were going to make a joke at 4:43. "Any pokemon with arms can learn it, so Gengar can but haunter can't. I guess you need arms, not hands"
I decided to take a look at what they best choices would have been for your Seismic Toss Pokemon, had you actually wanted to use it for more than absorbing hits. I think the best over all option would have been Omastar. Both of its defense stats are fantastic, its weaknesses and resistances line up well with Haunter's (though they're both weak to ground), and best of all, you'd actually get to use the Helix Fossil, which I think has only happened one other time. The biggest downside is that Omanyte doesn't Seismic Toss and evolves at level 40. If you wanted something weaker, but that can learn Seismic Toss right away for easier training, Poliwrath is actually a very solid choice. Though I probably would have gone with Hypno or Snorlax instead.
This would have been a good run to throw Poliwrath in the daycare. Since it's seismic toss doss damage equal to its level, and you wanted to focus on leveling just Haunter, it would have allowed you to "train" it in the background while pushing through the story
Do you disallow trade evolutions as a personal rule, or just because of emulator limitations? There's an option to allow trade evolutions by level up in the Universal Pokemon Randomiser if you want to use trade evolutions!
On our way through, I took the helix fossil. I knew if I didn’t say what I took, you’d all ask. Actually, now that I think about it, everyone asks anyway. Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm.

Ok so the laparas kept using confuse ray as thatmove is ghost type and ghost is weak to ghost. Same reason as the agility spam.
Having a bit of Poliwrath grinding is smart, you could easily level up some in Victory Road as it's so underlevel. More health plus a last-ditch Seismic Toss is fine
Polo wrath in the hall of fame like “and I helped!” 😂
Yeah, this run would definitely be harder in other generations with type matches actually affecting these moves, and no "good" AI that will spam Rest and Agility against a Ghost type, lol. Would love to see you do this run again in gens 2+ :)
As someone who's dabbled in competitive gen 1 before, i'm gonna guess that you're wanting to use that seismic toss tm on chansey, which i was expecting too lol
I thought similar. Seismic Toss scales with enemy weight anyway, so why not go for good def stats? Would be hell to catch tho.
@@FakeXero yeah true lol, i legit couldn't bear catching one in a firered playthrough without save states lol
The pokemon world is a world where elemental energies exist. Tackle is a standard attack containing no elemental energies. Rock Throw contians elemental energy, and that's why they can summon rocks in the middle of the ocean.
I don’t know about Seismic Toss, but he *was* able to win with Might Shade.
Well this is a new one.
Requesting Pokemon B2W2 With Only One Chinchou.
" Koga's AI seems like it's smart enough not to use normal type moves", Koffing proceeds to use tackle 😂
The picture actually made me wonder, ever done challenge runs of the card games? Would that be a good idea? or a terrible one? might be worth having a look, those games have big nostalgia factor, wish they'd make newer ones
Totally not a terrible idea 🙂 Paraspecter does these on his channel. They're pretty fun to watch!
@@Nick_Slavik he's a absolute underrated TH-camr. I love his tcg runs so much
Paraspector does really fun challenges in the GBC Pokemon Card Game!
I 100% agree with the comments on Paraspecter 🙂👍
@@Nick_Slavikagreed love Paraspector's TCG runs
I thought it was gonna be someone ironic like Chansey or Kadabra, or someone where you think "they don't have hands????" like Electrode
Random words of the "Day"™: day 618, 619, 620, and 621: Registration, Taskmaster, Governance, Tenderness
I almost spat out my water when I heard "Pokemon Platinum with only one Regigigas". I can't wait to see how fast or slow that challenge will be. It would be ironic if it was a fast challenge
My guess for the seismic toss TM is either the static Snorlax or Chansey if you want to grind in the safari zone. Both have high hp and special to tank late game foes like Lorelei
Your mistake was thinking that his choice was going to be a _good_ one.
The start of the challenge is kinda like the creepypasta with the Ghost type that mops the floor until it haunts you.
man that was such a fun Haunter only run, you should do an only Nightshade or Seismic Toss run!
....wait a minute...
20:28 knowing mdb was doing this recording on my birthday is kind of a great birthday gift...
I'm so sad to see poliwrath utterly wasted.
4:44 guess for the Seismic Toss Pokémon is Chansey!
Name the regigigas Frigeta because the “freezer” saga is finally over….. because that’s hilarious
MY BOI REGIGIGAS GETTING LOVE WE CELEBRATE!!!
Cheers!
I sooooo hope it's Chansey for the mystery pokemon xD
Bro makes my day i listen to all his videos while i do anything keep it up man
Poor, abandoned poliwrath
great video always enjoy your challenge videos keep up the great work and thanks for all your hard work
Its been a really long time since ive seen one of these but i used to watch every one, hearing the fossil bit again made it feel like coming back home
I actually love these moves, so I'm psyched to see you do this.
Can you beat Pokémon Red with only Ember? All kinds of Pokémon and as many Pokémon a necessary are allowed.
Yes! I have been one of those who was asking for the Regi run! Sorry if it caused you pain!
Pokemon platinum one regi sounds fun.
I REALLY like the thumbnail for this video, seeing the Pokemon cards there fills me with so much nostalgia. I look forward to maybe seeing them pop up a bit more??
have you ever considered a challenge where you do Oblivion's mages guild without using magic?
Can I Beat Pokemon Red with ONLY Nightshade & Seismic Toss?
Didn't it become: Can I Beat Pokemon Red with ONLY Nightshade?
Oh good, another pokemon challenge actually worth watching as opposed to another pointless monomon
Looking forward to the Regigigas run!
The fridge saga has reached its conclusion! Woohoo! Oof about the wasp nest though. Hope that gets sorted out quickly.
A wasp nest is outside your front door? Get clothes that cover your body and get a burning barrel ready.
I don't know why, but I thought the most recent fallout run was the automatic recharge guns.
I guess the stealthy silencer run was more effective than you thought.
Video idea - can I beat Pokemon (insert gen 3 or 4 game) using Pokemon and moves from card packs
You would buy a fresh box of Pokemon cards and open like 10 packs of Pokemon cards only using the Pokemon on the card and only using the moves that have on the card. You cannot evolve the Pokemon on the cards nor could you use any other moves but you can use duplicates if you get duplicates.
I'm glad you finally got to Seismic Toss your dead fridge outta there!
Uh
Good luck with the wasp nest though ghfdjkghdfkj also the entire time, either i just completely forgot what Gen 1 Ekans looked like, or i never paid attention, but that sure is a look.
Hmm seismic toss pokemon that could help, i guess snorlax would be good option because of his bulkiness
What do you mean Meowth can learn nightsade? That was again a nice run, thank you. Btw: which fossil did you pick? Also: X/Y with one Noibat?
I completely forgot what fossil you took. What did you take again?
That's interesting. I remember in Gen 1 though the Exp. All would just divide the amount you got equally among the party instead of what it does now.
@@BmanTheChamp That is true. Doesn't change the fact that it was intended to share exp with your whole team though, just functions differently by the actual numbers.
You know what I'm surprised hasn't been done yet? A Pokemon challenge run using only "not very effective" moves. Think you've got the skills to pull it off, MDB? ;)
Misty: I like the all-out offense of the water-type Pokémon
Also Misty: leads the fight with 2 X-Defends
Next you should do Pokémon platinum croagunk only
I thought you were going to make a joke at 4:43.
RIP Terry Funk and Bray Wyatt. Hopefully some Pocket Monsters content will cheer me up.
Utter downer of a week.....
about the rocks and ghosts... I think it's all about context, you know intent, maliciousness and that kinda stuff, pokemon are really into that
This would have been a good run to throw Poliwrath in the daycare.
Are there seriously not more Pokemon in Gen 1 who learn Night Shade/Seismic Toss?
MDB: I just wanna use a Poliwrath!
Also MDB: *literally never uses Poliwrath*
Another entertaining run, tho! 😁
On our way through, I took the helix fossil. I knew if I didn’t say what I took, you’d all ask. Actually, now that I think about it, everyone asks anyway. Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm.
I thought he was going to be sarcastic and get a 2nd haunter to teach seismic toss.
But 1000 iq play to choose a fighting type when your only other Pokémon is only weak to psychic/s .
