The fact Golbat doesn't evolve before the national dex but still keeps trying every level is utterly ridiculous
It is so infuriating.
I always try to get a crobat on my team for casual playthroughs as i really like it. And i know i used one in fire red, but cant even remember that. I do remember it not evolving, mustve been so fustrating to me. I think it only evolves after getting the national dex and after doing some sevii island stuff.

@@D3sdinova i feel like part of the charm of black and white was that it was all new pokemon and b2/w2 allowed the previous gen pokemon to return. i will say tho, i really dont like that the new diamond and pearl remakes dont seem to have the expanded regional dex that platinum introduced. i get that the original DP didn't have those but that's an easy fix, right?
Just to note, Drill Peck is the strongest flying type move aside from Sky Attack which requires two turns. That’s why I always used to go with Dodrio when I used to play Pokémon red or blue. Its attack/speed stats are also superior to that of Pidgeot. This thing is a beast
Imo, pidgeot is the weakest gen 1 bird at least til its mega came around

He could have lvl him up against wild pokemon or wait until his other pokemon reach lvl 36 and then lvl up using rare candies. Same for gyarados

Note, Butterfree could have made this easier due to Confusion. It is a flying type as well

@@1845net Not really. He cant use the pre evos in combat but he can exp share level them
@@DieGurke_ the exp share item is not available early game, and switch training still puts that pokemon in combat.

Keep it up with the team runs! It's a refreshing change of pace and you seem to have a lot of fun with them. This one was great and I'm looking forward to the water type run!
Normally I don't comment (sorry algorithm) but i actually have thoughts on this run:
1. Others are saying it, but charizard would have been good as would gyarados
2. Brock only uses rock tomb if you out speed onix.
3. Double omniboost is way stronger then an accuracy drop.
Either way, hope you don't get too sick. Could be a funny gag to just drop your script into a text to speech if you are though
Charizard and gyarados were excluded as their pre-evolutions are not flying type and they are just too strong

he could have just stuck them in the daycare until they hit the correct level and then give them a rare candy to trigger the evolution, or train them with exp share, since held items are allowed.
them being strong wouldn't have been much of an issue since he'd get them fairly late into the game , also i doubt "too strong" is much of an argument when three legendaries are on the table.
Brock will also use Rock tomb if he sees a KO with it. So it's speed control and KOs
@@windhelmguard5295 1. He didn't use the legendary birds, so i don't see your point 2. The exact wording of the rules state that that pokemon can only be caught for HMs or if they fit the rules of the challenge (in this case being a flying type). because they cannot meet the requirements of the challenge until after they are caught, charizard and gyarados cannot be used.
@@pitaya_is_cool1408Charizard would still have been an eligible team member since you don't catch it, you receive it. Besides, it doesn't really matter if pre-evolutions don't start with the type, as in other runs he's caught "ineligible" prevos because they would eventually have the type upon evolution. "Too strong" not really an issue either as he's used starters in team runs before and gyarados only has six more total stat points than Charizard.
Poor butterfree just being avoided.

Most people choose pidgeot as their flying type in Kanto not realizing, aside from Farfetch’d, that it is the worst flying type in the region.
My one and only defense, which I've stuck to since I was six, is that Pidgeot just looks cooler than the other flying-types.
to be fair, pidgeot might be able to toxic stall decently well. between fly to stall turns and having better defences than the other flying types that might be the optimal strategy for it
Farfetch'd might be better since it has an XP boost and can Swords Dance and get crits to make up for it's lower base attack

Yes men always seems to play red or fire red. I think MDB needs to do some runs in blue or leaf green

@@rosso4001it's because of the algorithm. The games most commonly played are often, if not always, the first version named when referring to the pair. For example, "Red and Blue" and "Fire Red and Leaf Green". That's essentially why one game dominates over the other with all the pairings throughout the generations.

It probably wouldn't have made much of a difference, but you could've picked up the TM for Aerial Ace after cutting down the bush East of Cerulean city or buy the TM in the department store. It has the same power as wing attack, but it never misses.
And I kind of thought you'd pick up Magikarp and use Gyarados lol.
Flamethrower Zubat was my favorite as a kid

@@hayleywaalen2612 I actually drew a Fireball Gastly (poorly) waaaaay back. Probably Johto era, might be earlier. It’s obviously not that big a leap especially if it’s mostly smoke, but for someone who was ultimately not an artist, I was impressed

Edit: it was really funny seeing the silph co rival fight where charizard just obliterated your team. It’s almost like it was saying “THIS IS WHAT YOU GET FOR NOT USING ME IN A FLYING TYPE RUN! IM A FLYING TYPE MDB! FLYINGGG!” 😂😂
Week 1 of asking for a flareon solo run
(Yes, flareon is stronger than the average pokemon that MDB uses, he has even used eevee, but flareon gets so much disrespect from the community, it deserves some love)

@@anastasiawinters4455unfortunately, Flareon's stat spread does it no favors, if it's stats were the way they are in romhacks, where it's speed is swapped with either it's special attack or special defense, it would be leagues better, along with giving it a fire type move with actual power that doesn't require taking recoil damage

How about a challenge of going through Pokémon emerald with only using the move assist! Using a skitty throughout the play through and building a team of Pokémon with strategically picked moves.

I highly recommend pokemon soul silver with a poison team. You can get a drapion once you beat lance, so you get an awesome team of pokemon overall! You can also thief tentacools for a bunch of poison barbs. I have done it myself and it was a wonderful time.

It’s tedious, but I’d love to see you try the postgame of FireRed sometime.
It requires you catch 60+ Pokemon by the time you beat the League, but results in a substantially more challenging League the second time around. I’d like to see that on one of these challenges!
this was a cool run I definitely want more of these types only run since they offer a way better variety which makes runs more fun to watch! Also i wanna say I am one of those people that listen to the outros lol
I've done plenty of type based challenges in the newer games, and seeing them here with older games is really fun. MDB was one of the people that got me into posting challenges, so seeing his take on a team run style I do a lot is neat.

Idea for challenge run; generation 1 run where you are defeated by each gym leader with a main Pokemon in your party. Also, a run on an Island of Sodor mod in the style of the first mod video.

Since April is coming up ... how about a Team Training run? not sure how hard it would be, but Team Training with just the Ginyu Force would be fun to see

I absolutely love Fearow in Fire-red and Leafgreen playthroughs!! The fact that it's stats outclass Pidgeot's and the Spearow-line can naturally learn Aerial ace while the Pidgey-line CANNOT in a generation where TM's break after 1 use is soo clutch when team building; not to mention how stellar Drill Peck is in every way better than any other possible option available!! My favorite Fearow moveset in Gen-3 runs is> 1. Drill peck 2. Aerial ace 3. Steel wing; and 4. Return/hyper beam

3:38 because the AI only selects Rock Tomb if 1 out of 2 conditions is met.
1.) If you're faster than the enemy Pokemon, as for Speed-Control
2.) If you're in Kill-Range by the move
Otherwise it usually takes the most-damaging move - since Rock Tomb (and also Scary Face) is hard coded as "speed-control" move for the AI, it won't be selected otherwise! That's why Tackle/Bind are used for any other circumstances.
"Version exclusives" sure is a funny way to spell "Flying types".

She is obsessed with Pokémon, specifically Bulbasaur and Pikachu, so could you do a Fire Red run with only those two? She has also been watching me go through Kanto on Pokémmo, so she would recognize many of the locations. Cheers, and thanks for the content.
I don’t know if you do or not but I think you should use set battle mode for team runs. Just as another added challenge since you get multiple pokemon. Either way I love the videos and I hope you stay healthy!

Also, a couple of times while watching this video, I was like, what if I was a Pidgey? Massive Mystery Dungeon fan, and I prefer being the Pokemon myself. Then my brain spiraled into reminding myself of my fear of heights and that I wouldn't know how to fly... And this is a Pokemon challenge, not Mystery Dungeon!

Very fun run and it was nice to see Golbat pull its weight! It feels super overshadowed compared to Crobat
Poison types only is a very fun run in any of the Kanto or Johto games (though probably best avoided in gen 1 ;-) ) because you get so many options, would be cool to see at some point.
Feel better soon, MDB! Loved the Flying type-only challenge because I'm a huge fan of birds, lol. I'd suggest an Ice types only but I don't know a game that lets you get ice types until later in the game, and really, I value your sanity.
I found a romhack that gives you an ice type really, really early on, Pokemon Vega

It's interesting how he can have a full team of pokemon in the 50s and still have a tough time beating the E4. Solo runs can often get the job done in the 80s.
Farfetch'd is absolutely way too much underrated in Gen-3 games (because of competition), in my humble opinion! I love using CH'DING as one of my HM-slaves (cut; fly; false swipe; and thief), but it can definitely be useful since it gets traded to you with a GUARANTEED Adamant nature (plus boosted exp. is very handy)! The leak + swords dance + STAB slash has come in clutch more than once for me in past playthroughs when deep into story necessary raids mid game!! I once unintentionally soloed "Lavender Town Pokémon Tower" with him because I was trying to level grind party members that I recently caught right beforehand!!! Fond memories.
Any chance of us getting ORAS: A Journey? Or did you already play ORAS i can never remember. As cool as these challenges are X+Y:J was a great watch
It's slightly sad that you didn't switch train for Butterfree before Brock. I guess you would have just boxed later anyway, but it would have given some status play.

I like these team runs. The single pokemon runs are good stuff, but I like all the different options you have available with more team members.

The fun thing about RBY trainer items is that they're technically per switch/pokemon. It's just that there's only two item users that also switch pokemon and they have code to limit their item usage.

I remember hunting level 2 pidgeys in Blue to find a perfect stat Pidgey. I picked level 2's because I could compare them easily. That thing was a beast when I leveled it up.
Of course, I know now that it might not have actually been perfect, because the IVs (or equivalent) create stat variations that might not be entirely visible at that level.
If you're enjoying the mono type runs, have you considered doing one as a nuzlocke? Pushes a different kind of strategizing and prep work if you want to flex some different muscles.

Man, these teamruns make me want more of them. To this day one of my favorit videos was brilliant diamond with no new moves, so maybe that could return? Maybe use it the same way with BD as a new push into a not yet covered generation of pokemon?

I dunno how open you are to doing this, but there is an option on the Pokemon randomizer that gives you the national dex at the start of the game which would allow you to evolve Pokemon who are in the national dex. Also great run!
I remember doing a mono-flying run on the original Red. My team was Charizard, Butterfree, Gyarados, Aerodactyl, Zapdos, and Pidgeot/Dragonite!
For your information, if i remember correctly, brock in Gen1 has 5 full heals for geodude and Onix each.
Farfetch’d got done dirty. The stats look rough but as early as it’s obtained it’s a valuable member just by having aerial ace, slash and swords dance. I’m kind of biased though because it’s my favorite Pokémon, but it’s low key amazing in the kanto remakes.

I don't know why but seeing a Farfetch'd in the Hall of fame surrounded by strong or really useful flying types is funny to me.
I was very surprised to see you stick to Ancientpower on Aerodactyl. The three fossil lines can learn Rock Slide from the tutor in Rock Tunnel in FRLG. Still, it clearly worked, and I could see using it over Rock Slide for the accuracy and fishing for boosts.
I'm surprised that Mah Dry Bread had gotten more challenge variety as the years went by. Even though I'm basically a retired gamer.
Gen 3 ai uses rock tomb as speed control. So generally won't use it if you're slower than their pokemon unless all their moves will knock you out then it chooses a move randomly and can select it again.
Can't believe you called Farfetch'd a dud. Even when using it for the HMs; Cut, Fly, Swords Dance, and Steel Wing is an amazing moveset that you can fill out as early as the Safari Zone.

I think platinum with only steel types could be pretty fun. Especially because it's the only game you can start with technically a steel type with piplup
