That could be a nice run, actually. I kind of want to try it for myself now... 80 across the board is way better than most Pokemon he's done runs with, but Phione's still not great (in particular only learning Water-type moves by level up, and not a whole lot more via TMs), so it could make for a fun run still. Mid-difficulty, I would guess, probably keep it on the backlog for right before or after a really tough challenge.
Just saying halfing your attack stat isn't the same thing as halving your base stats. It's like huge power. Azumarill doubles attack stat means it's EV's and IV's get doubled as well
You can test that by using a Teddiursa (who does have base 80 Atk 50 Spd) and seeing that at an equal level with the same EV investment it outspeeds and outdamages Reggie.
@@psychopat4402 Yeah that's what I said. At an equal level and with equal investment, a Teddiursa will have higher stats than a Slow Starting Regigigas.
i kinda wanna see more of these "good mon" challenges. not replacing anything but it was fun to see a low grinding run with a diverse moveset. Slow start is also an interesting factor to deal with
Small correction from the start, base stats do not scale linearly. If your base attack is 160 and your attack stat is cut in half that means you effectively have a base attack of 71, not 80. The way your actual stats calculate, each additional point of base stats gives a smaller return as you go. As a result, since actual stats gained from all the base stats are cut in half, instead of recalculating your stats as if your base stat was lower, you should always consider reducing your actual stats as reducing your base stats by *more* than what the reported decrease is. This means that discounting nature, EVs, and IVs, Regigigas has a higher special attack than physical attack until slow start wears off.
Do you know if that is the same case with a level 100 Pokémon doing online battles that set it to level 50? Are the stats just being halved, or are the stats being recalculated?
@@D-Havoc Without knowing every single online battle system out there, any system I'm aware of changes you level 50, just without changing EVs or moves. So, it not only recalculates stats, it also means the damage calculation formula uses level 50 rather than level 100 (a weak level 100 Pokemon with the same attacking stat as a strong level 50 Pokemon will actually do more damage because damage scales with both attacking stat and Pokemon level, not attacking stat alone).
It's not really a smaller return as you go. Each additional base stat point always gives an additional 2 actual stat points at level 100, not including natures. You are however right that its attack being cut in half is not the same as cutting the base stat in half
Also IV's, EV's and nature bonuses are halved as well and since early game mons tend to give attack EV's that means gigases attack stat is worse than it would be for another mon.
i too thought it be too easy but it seems to hit a really good balance. For me a good challenge run is one that feels a bit like a puzzle instead of having to just grind like hell. This run i wont say make it 100% there but it did have cool moments and substitute being a legit solution made it way more cool
Really happy with how this challenge turned out. I knew it wouldn't be as hard as using first form Pokémon, but Slow Start was such a hindrance that it made for really interesting fights, specially the final rival fight. Glad to know that you're planning to use Regigigas in more challenges in the near future.
I mean slow start wasn't much of a hindrance really. The only hindrance was that he was a normal type during the rival fight and that he only had one Pokémon so susceptible to stat drops and status.
Considering how well it went in this run, Regigigas in Pokemon Black should be somewhat similar but a little more challenging. Can't wait for more of your amazing runs!
Any Gen HM Moves in Battle Only + Minimum Pokemon required to learn all HM moves out of battle to progress to Elite Four. Can use PUR to start with weakest HM damaging HM move.
I like the idea of retooling the easy challenges like this into trying to do it at the lowest level possible, to the point that you would even retry fights underleveled if you feel like you could JUST about make it with the same kind of RNG you'd need in a normal run.
This run speaks to me personally. Myself and my partner actually reference Regigigas some days. If we wake up on a given morning and just can't get going we call it a Regigigas kind of day. Because of the "Slow Start"
Regigigas (and the other Regis, especially Regirock) is one of my favourite pokemon by design just because of how weird they are and the lore (or lack of) that they have, they're still pretty mysterious and ambiguous creatures and I love the design so much. Sure he sucks to use but its a fascinating creature, lovely to see you use it.
Would love to see you do one with Shaymin! I actually tried it with two Shaymin recently, and even with adding Swift at the beginning since it doesn't learn an attacking move until lv. 9 I was still surprised by how much of a challenge it was, mostly due to the lack of non-grass level up moves.
Depends on the patience Mah Dry Bread has. He can start with one fossil, but the only other way to get another one is in the Underground... a major luck-based circumstance. He might not want to waste hours or days finding the Skull/Armor Fossil to get the other party member.
Yeah .... BC isn't much better than Ontario at the moment XD I also happen to live surrounded by mountains so every hour can be something different. We can get the whole spectrum of Pokemon weather effects in the span of a day ... although our sandstorms happen in the Spring once the snow has melted and the wind picks up before they've had the chance to clean the sand off the roads XD Also, be sure to check out the tougher second run with the Elite Four and Champion Alder in Black post the Ghetsis fight!
Commenting before I see the challenge. I think this should be easy? But perhaps there's a reason this has been requested so much. No matter what I think you're going to crush this challenge, just with a couple overlooked surprises.
Correction, Slow Start works like Huge Power. Halving the *total* attack and speed. Not the base, meaning it's slower and weaker than what you expected. I don't know the exact calculations, but the halved attack won't be base 80
I think Return + a good Dark attack coupled with Protect and Bulk Up/Curse would cheese it. Protect to burn past Slow Start, Bulk Up/Curse to boost while Slow Start wears off, then RUIN THEM.
Regigigas doesn't get protect or rest. It is the only Pokemon in the game to not get those moves. The only way it can heal is through drain punch or items.
I use to run a pretty decent team on Showdown with Gigas. So many people online were clowning me for using him until they realized that a slow, bulky, physical Gigas is hard to defeat when the meta was “spend 3-5 turns setting up” back then. My favorite set was max atk, max def, no speed, lefties, Drain Punch, Return, Substitute, Knock Off.
This was awesome! Do you think you could do a run with only weight based attacks (I.e. low kick, grass knot, etc.) I feel like it would be an interesting run with different brick walls
Slow Start actually doesn't halve your base attack and speed, it halves your total attack and speed which means that you don't actually have a base attack and speed of 80 and 50 and the equivalent base attack differs according to levels IVs EVs natures etc Still makes regigigas much stronger than what you normally use though!
I came up with a really silly challenge this week: Pokemon Black/White with only the move Assist. I wanted to try it for myself in X, but trying to randomise that *just* to have Purrloin as a starter to do it turned out to be far, far beyond the level of faff that I was willing to deal with when it came to figuring it out. xD
rest actually is a TM in gen 4; it's tm44. it just isnt on regigigas's learnset because....it doesnt learn it! guess it'd be too good at stalling slow start turns?
It's been so long since I have seen one of your videos. Forgot how much I enjoyed them!!! Watching your nuzzlocks is what made me want to do Pokémon Game Live Streams on my channel. Keep up that grind my friend!!!
On our way through, I took the skull fossil. I knew if I didn’t say what I took, you’d all ask. Actually, now that I think about it, everyone asks anyway. Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm.
I actually laughed out loud when I saw that title and thumbnail. Obviously this will be an easy run, regigigas is practically unkillable compared to the crap you normally use, but I love this idea for how much of an insult to regigigas it is. I think it'll be really fun to see how some of the boss fights go and how low your level will end up being. Keep up the good work
Video idea - can I beat Pokemon (insert gen 3 or 4 game) using Pokemon and moves from card packs You would buy a fresh box of Pokemon cards and open like 10 packs of Pokemon cards only using the Pokemon on the card and only using the moves that have on the card. You cannot evolve the Pokemon on the cards nor could you use any other moves but you can use duplicates if you get duplicates.
Ah right, since Regigigas isn't a starter, its default friendship is 0, so Return does... pretty much nothing early on. Whereas the starters' default friendship is around 100 IIRC. So just giving it return...... yeah that had to hurt.
Most pokemon either have 140, 100, 70, 35 or 0 base friendship. Most box art legendary pokemon, every ultra Beast and some mythicals start with 0 friendship. Weirdly the Forces of Nature Thudurus, Tornadus and Landorus share a base friendship of 90 with the Latios and Latias.
I got few for u that u can try. 1) can you beat any pokemon game with only shiny pokemon 2) can you beat any pokemon game with only terrible accuracy moves 2) can you beat any pokemon game with under level pokemon. 3) can you beat a pokemon game with only one Slakoth
Shinies only is basically normal game, but it takes longer because of the hunt... Terrible accuracy would be more infuriating than anything. Personally, I think he wouldn't have fun doing either of those... Maybe not the shiny one, but that would probably make him late on the schedule anyway. Just saying, not trying to be rude or anything ! Those are great ideas, but I just don't think he'll do them
Heres a fun run I just thought of. Any Pokemon game with the box art legendary, but you have to have the Pokemon be at least 6 levels lower than the Gym leader or Elite for members ace. For example if you play Pokemon ruby you can only use Groundon but he can only be at level 8 when he goes up agains Roxanne who's Nosepass is at level 14. That way the extra stats of the legendary isn't as noticeable. Also is you go under 6 levels close to the ace you have to restart.
Halving the actual stat would not equate to halving base stats. Regigigas's attack is way below an equivalence of 80 base Attack. Slow Start is THAT bad. Also Rest was a TM in gen 4, Regigigas just can't actually learn it (or Protect) until gen 8.
Actually due to how stats affecting abilities and items work. The ones that directly effect the stats of a pokémon and not stat changes like Speed Boost. Slow Start Regigigas has an attack state of 55 and a speed stat of 25. Since the thing being that abilities do not in fact affect the base stats. So instead of 160 to 80 it's as explained 160 to 55. From a Max attack stat of 460 to a tiny 230.
One small correction about Slow Start: they cut Regigigas' TOTAL Attack and Speed by half. If Regigigas had 80 base atk and 50 base Speed, it would still get full benefits from his IVs and EVs in those stats, but since it's the final stats calculated off everything that get slashed in half, those bonuses are cut in half as well! You know what a Pokémon with 80 base Atk and 50 base Spd is? TEDDIURSA. A little plushie bear is faster and hits harder than Regigigas during those five turns.
Lots of tense moments, not much grinding, pretty much the ideal scenario for a run! Loved the creativity needed to overcome the gimmick. Obviously you can't plan for a run that good but it'd be interesting to see some other gimmick pokemon that aren't necessarily agonizing, but would make for interesting and unexpected outcomes. Not too familiar with later gens so I can't think to suggest any unfortunately. Regardless, great run, good video.
Ended the run at Level 73 with exactly 73 HP left! Btw, just like I do with all of your videos, I imagine the levels that you beat a gym battle and champ on being level caps. So the "level caps" for this video would be Gym 1: Lv17 Gym 2: Lv24 Gym 3: Lv28 Gym 4: Lv35 Gym 5: Lv39 Gym 6: Lv45 Gym 7: Lv49 Gym 8: Lv57 E4 + Champ: Lv73
1: Zen Headbutt isn't 100% accurate, and it missing would put him back possibly 2 turns instead of a guaranteed 1-shot. 2: Not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure he's letting Infernape live one more turn to buy a turn for slow start to wear off. Otherwise he wouldn't kill Snorlax later. 3: He was in literally no danger from the Lucario. He had a sub up, and he was faster. This changes nothing. All in all, type matchups aren't everything.
I was thinking during the playthrough, hmm it would be interesting to see substitute with the Slow Start ability. And Elite 4 the substitute TM comes out. Surprised to not see you use Leftovers as a held items but it was awesome to see the strats vs the Elite 4. Great vid as always, look forward to Saturdays.
Hey MDB! I'm surprised that I remembered this but - I had a dream a few days ago where I was a Pokemon trainer with only one hoothoot and I was getting destroyed by this double trainer battle with 5 ledybas. This is weird because I have never played Pokemon gold or used a hoothoot in any of my Pokemon games. To honor this odd dream, could you play Pokemon gold with only one hoothoot? I think it would be a good challenge! Thanks for reading my comment - they are good for the youtube algorithm, after all.
I think this challenge could be more interesting if you just did a platinum run with every pokemon you have has slow start but It's still a great vid keep up the work
this is one of my all time favourite pokemon. finding it in platinum was such an epic moment as a kid I feel like you should have started with regigigas as a level 1 just because thats what level he is found at in platinum
I really like your variety of runs!! Have you ever thought of adding something like a randomizer for e.g. the abilities or moves? Or have you considered runs like random path finding (I love those videos) What do you think of a parcifists run (only status moves and no direct hits)?
That was an interesting run. When you said at the beginning you were confident you were going to win, I wasn't sure, but I guess legendary stats go a long way. The "eternal weather" in Gen 4 would definitely be a pain to deal with though. Also pretty shocked you OHKO'd Cynthia's Garchomp but I guess you were pretty high level by then. I don't like my games to be too easy either. I like to have *some* challenge, but at the same time I do like when things are easy. Like in Sword and Shield when I could use my Thievul to basically OHKO Bede's entire team (since he has an all-Psychic team in the main game) without him being able to do anything to me. 😁 Hope your wife has a safe trip to France! I minored in French in college but sadly have not been able to visit there.
Challenge request: This one is two parts. Pick any pokemon, and do a run with all 0 IVs and a hindering nature. Then do the same run with all 31 IVs and a helpful nature, just to see how much of a difference IVs make. I'd probably recommend Platinum or FRLG and use either a starter or a middle of the road useful-ish pokemon, nothing too terrible or fantastic.
12:28 actually, you can get the TM for Rest is in the game, at the Veilstone Game Corner (also via Pick Up, but, it's against your rules). However, Regigigas can't learn it for obvious reasons...
What I said - There is no Rest TM in this game
What I should have said - Regigigas can't learn Rest by TM

I really liked this video! It's good to see you enjoy a run so much!
Halving the actual stat would not equate to halving base stats. Regigigas's attack is way below an equivalence of 80 base Attack. Slow Start is THAT bad.
Also Rest was a TM in gen 4, Regigigas just can't actually learn it (or Protect) until gen 8.
Really good video my guy
These videos are so fun even when it’s an easier run
This was a fun run. More tough than I expected. Glad you did it!
MDB, you can be a scarf guy. You just gotta hit the face. Specifically the Blue Steel from Zoolander. Trust the process.
Glad I got to watch this even happier it came out on my birthday
I thought your watch was the surprised Pikachu meme, I need a nap
for future runs if you're worried about one specific status like burn just try to start the fight pre statused with a less threatening status
12:30 “I should get earthquake for steel types” 30 seconds later “wow if only there was some way I could do twice as much damage to lucario..” nice
So the "level caps" for this video would be
Gym 1: Lv17
Gym 2: Lv24
Gym 3: Lv28
Gym 4: Lv35
Gym 5: Lv39
Gym 6: Lv45
Gym 7: Lv49
Gym 8: Lv57
E4 + Champ: Lv73
Been wanting this one for years!!
19:36 ZenHeadbutt the Crobat
22:26 Earthquake the Infernape
27:03 EARTHQUAKE THE LUCARIO!!!
26:55 Nice.
Did you know Rock Onix can wear armour?
rockmeat
I did not. That fact was onix-pected.
I’m really excited to see more regigigas challenges
I like seeing the strategies you had to use in this one. This was a fun one.
This was the funniest run I’ve ever seen, gg mate
MDB: Maybe you're a scarf guy?
Am I a scarf guy? 🤔
Substitute, Protect and left overs would be a good strategy to shake off slow start. Have a nice vacation ✌️
Completing platinum with the weakest pokemon in the game? You would need to be a pokemon master like Mah-Dry-Bread in order to do that.
Why did you not use Earthquake on Cynthia's Lucario? Wouldn't it have been better than Return, as it hits super effective?
It’s a pity you didn’t have access to the Leftovers. That would have done wonders on the late part of the run.
Maybe a Protect + Leftovers would be better for stalling.
But i did not check the availibilty of these two in Plat.
I'm so glad you did this one!
I think this challenge could be more interesting if you just did a platinum run with every pokemon you have has slow start but It's still a great vid keep up the work
One of the most satisfying runs I've seen
this is one of my all time favourite pokemon. finding it in platinum was such an epic moment as a kid
I feel like you should have started with regigigas as a level 1 just because thats what level he is found at in platinum
I really like your variety of runs!!
Have you ever thought of adding something like a randomizer for e.g. the abilities or moves?
Or have you considered runs like random path finding (I love those videos)
What do you think of a parcifists run (only status moves and no direct hits)?
great run keep up your wonderful work always enjoy these videos thanks for all your hard work
That was an interesting run.
Hope your wife has a safe trip to France!
I'd probably recommend Platinum or FRLG and use either a starter or a middle of the road useful-ish pokemon, nothing too terrible or fantastic.
it's gonna be super easy, barely an inconvenience
12:28 actually, you can get the TM for Rest is in the game, at the Veilstone Game Corner (also via Pick Up, but, it's against your rules). However, Regigigas can't learn it for obvious reasons...
