I bought that spreader in the winter after last season. It’s a game changer!!! Spreads so nice and even and with such little effort. Wish I had bought one years earlier!!!
I bought this and used Peat Moss for my overseed on your recommendation! It worked great thanks! I did have an issue with mine with the handle insertion but was able to fix it myself thankfully! Also had some door issues but the company sent me a replacement so that was nice but never thought to check the handle until day of seeding of course! Just slowed me down a bit with that hiccup but other than that..loved the product as far as use and even application!!
I was able to rent this spreader along with the aerator for my overseeding last week. It was so dusty I got rid of most of the clothes I was wearing lol. It was a lot of work top dressing 20k square feet, but I got it done. I am eagerly awaiting some positive results! Aerate, seed, fertilize and top dress. If I don’t get good results, I’m done trying! Thanks Ryan for all your videos.
We are considering purchasing a compost spreader. Would you recommend the 24” or go for a wider model. We have larger areas and can tow, but I think walking it would be better for the smaller areas. Great videos.
@@pjpellatt5656 Hey!! I know I'm not Ryan but I only have the smaller one for roughly 13,000 sq ft. It was alot of work and took all day, but it was hot that day also! I had to reload it alot as it only fit roughly a little over 1 cu ft of peat moss comfortably in the spreader and I used about 50 cu ft of peat to cover everything. I was wishing everytime that I had the bigger one lol! I used a big shovel to help and my gorilla cart really came in handy as well! Good luck!!
This is literally what I’m doing today! Glad I took a break for lunch to see what’s new on the TH-cam. Glad you touched on the watering thing. Exactly what my question was going to be.
Oh man am I grateful for this video 💙 I reseeded my whole lawn a month ago with 100% fescue and right now it’s patchy as hell and has been so SO slow coming in. I’ve been wondering how soon I can overseed and now I know I’m going to be busy tomorrow! Thank you for this video and the confidence boost.
Thanks Ryan, just added more seed in some areas that looked thin in my yard. Im going to continue watering as when I started 2 weeks ago just a few minutes less because the new grass is holding the ground moisture better.
I did this yesterday. Glad to see he and I are on the same page. Although he has nicer tools/toys. Will the lower Fall temperatures help cool season grass germinate better than the lingering Summer heat?
Having just done this, this weekend on areas I had seeded a couple weeks ago; it’s nice afterwards to have ones instincts reaffirmed as to what to do with areas remaining thin/bare.
This is what I did yesterday! Nice to be affirmed that I took the right course of overseed, hit bare spots more and peet moss. Just need a cheaper version of the spreader now…..
Thanks for the video, your channel always comes in clutch!! I followed your reno video too. I overseeded with perennial rye a week ago, 8mm rain was forecasted the day after seeding, but got we 40mm two days in a row! So I have some washed out bare spots I need to address. Cheers from New Zealand!
Really love the spreader. I got my hands on one this week and it's so much faster and easier to use than my bannerman mini topper! It whizzes round trees and the stuff left over is great as a mulch over winter for beds. Great video!
Ryan, I used your granular fertilizer two weeks ago and I am sold on this product! I used Scott’s, Johnathan Green and some off brands in the past which were ok but did not produce the effects of your product ! My fall lawn is thick and very green, my neighbors all want the info on the product I used. You did real good!
If you keep the seed pods from those cleomes next to your shed they will come back, they grow very easily from the seed pods. If you keep some of the seeds you can grow them at your new house too, you only have to but those once and the seeds keep them coming back every year.
I seeding some giant bare spots (medium/large sized dog traffic) in a 1-year old fescue yard two weeks ago. I had such great results that I reseeded my entire back yard about a week ago. I'm also using perennial rye for overseeding, as I read it can stand up to foot traffic better than fescue. Sure hope so!
Great video, very helpful and answered all questions I had. I couldn't afford the compost spreader so I instead used an old large flour sifter I had on hand...It took some time but luckily I have a very small backyard and it did the job I needed it to do! lol.
Great timing, I also (lawn reno) seeded two weeks ago with a TTTF/KBG/PRG mix and the PRG grew so fast I had to do my first mow a day or two ago. Noticed some bare spots and overseeded those so I am not the only one it appears (temps have been rather warmer than average). Only issue now is I couldn't scalp the existing new grass so not sure how this will all play out with the different grass types. Maybe I will have to use some growth regulator I saw in another video. Thanks again for the great content, I couldn't have pulled this off without your videos
Thank you! I am at the same point as you are in this video. Followed your program to a tee and am seeing great results so far. The lawn is a 100% KBG mix sold on your website. It is coming in beautifully. I will be doing some overseeding this week.
seems like a common sense approach...yet i have never done this! lol i just did my Fall seeding this past weekend...will definitely be following this advice and throwing down more seed where needed. love the content as always Ryan
I understand your earthworm issues. I also understand how beneficial they are for the soil. Now having said that, for the past two years I've been spraying imidacloprid which has really keep them at bay and thus substantially reduced the casting mounds and what I, humorously, like to call "worm disc disease" (the flat mud circle that smothers the grass from the mower drum running over the castings mound) in an otherwise nice turf.
Feed bags or seed bags like that have stitching with a small single stitch line (usually towards the front) and multiple stitch lines on the other side. With the single stitch line facing away from you, cut it on the left hand side or if it’s facing you cut it on the right hand side. Then it’ll unstitch and open right up!
I tried mushroom compost as well on some of the heavy sand areas, it hold moisture pretty well but I noticed a lot of mulch and other contaminants in the bag.
Exactly what I'm doing right now. Two weeks ago seeded GCI's Cool Blue, but now going to overseed again with his Spreader Elite Fescue. Ryan, how long would it take to ship your peat moss spreader? Excellent channel, get a lot of great tips! God bless.
Good afternoon friend greeting thanks for your good advice and for being so professional in your work thank you it is very helpful for us what you do greetings
@@akg_table if you have a peat moss roller I would say around 10-12 bags. Because it distributes better than hands. If you're doing it by hand or using some type of rake I would suggest closer to 20 bags. Most of it will go towards your bare ground seed, your overseed section shouldn't need that much because you have existing turf unless you have a bunch of bare spots. But have fun with it, just keep running back to store like the rest of us..lol start with about 8 bags if it's the 2.2 bag. If you can find the 3.0 bag maybe 6
Awesome video Ryan that helps a ton. Only additional question I have is in regards to the straw I put down on my first seeding. I seeded a new area about 25 ft long by 20 ft wide and used straw as a top layer of protection. When I go to reseed should I rake up that straw first so I get good seed to soil contact or just spread it over the straw? My new seed is roughly 2-3 inches in length. Appreciate any thoughts on this!
Dump your compost bags into an empty garbage can, the kind that holds the black garbage bags, and churn it with a power drill and auger bit. That will break up all the chunks and make it spread more uniformly. I mixed 50/50 of peat moss and compost this way and added it to the spreader with a shovel. It worked great, spread great, no chunks.
Great timing! I followed your videos to put a new lawn and finished it last week. It is coming great in most areas. However, my peat moss is still everywhere including the areas not growing strong. Should I disturb these areas by removing the existing peat moss to overseed or should I simply overseed it and mix the seed with the existing peat moss?
Awesome ! I just Overseeded too and am finally seeing everything germinate now ! I have one issue though that always ruins parts of my backyard . I have sun in most areas of my backyard but I have a rock wall and about 10 inches from the bottom wall outwards , moss grows and all the grass I plant there either dies or very rarely actually grows. (Everywhere else the grass grows thick )What can I do to prevent this ? I live in Ny with and have mostly blue grass with a little rye .
Got to plant a shade tolerant variety. Mazama bluegrass or better is fine fescues (but can't use Tenacity as a pre-emergent with fine fescues). Seedsuperstore has a shady mix. You can probably order it through Ryan's website too.
@@douglasauruss hey man thx !!! Also my exsisting lawn is getting crazy tall now like 5 or 6 inches , can I mow at 4 inches even though the new grass from the Overseed is only about 1.5 invhes
Compost spots might come in thicker. Your dedication truly pays off. Your occupation is almost as good as being retired. Thanks for the skill building and entertainment. When does the house go on the market?
I’m in this same boat, as it seems a lot of commenters are. Was this fall unseasonably warm? I seeded two weeks ago and I’m seeing really poor germination. I’ve watered daily, did not use a top dressing though. Would you recommend a reseed and top dress?
The Midwest just needs to get some rain. I did overseeing with 75 %kbg and 25% ss9000 perennial ryegrass and feel I really had to work hard to get it to all germinate. Rain is in the forecast this week so hoping it comes in more fully by next weekend. Go buckeyes. 😝
have any videos on what to do before winter comes. this is my first year actually getting into my lawn. i renovated by using sod. however i have noticed a few spots that were growing amazing have become bare due to i think staying wet all the time. even when i dont water. im worried about the upcoming winter and how to manage the lawn. im located in the pnw so i would assume its similar to you.
I used ss9000 in some bare areas in my yard and I'm getting some areas that are germinating well and others where there is almost no germination. I don't know what happened. I don't think I buried it too deep but I definitely need to overseed like you did. Should I just let the seed sit on top and cover with peat or should I rake it in and bury it a little?
It doesn't need to be under the surface much at all for rye in my experience. In fact, it's growing very well in the cracks of my driveway right now with no covering at all
Hey Ryan, thanks for the great video! I just overseeded and have been watering for a few minutes 3x a day to keep the seed wet. Do you know how long after germination I should keep up that schedule?
Ryan, what setting do you typically use on your Elite spreader when putting down your perennial Rye grass seed? Is it the same for new lawn renovation verses over seed renovation?
@@ryanknorrlawncare Ryan, Thank you for your reply. I have not done this a lot so I just needed a rough guide as to what the ground should look like after seeding. I haven't seen a lot of up close camera shots of seed density on the ground when going through one of these renovations. Keep up the great work!
Hi Ryan. I was thinking about reseeding again after a week in bare spots too but I'm afraid the competing sprouts will block the sun for the new? Also the existing may be getting even taller. It will be ok still you think? Thank you.
If I have a full set of grass, can I dress it with pea moss with the roller and then put down seeds? Or is this method you’re demonstrating is for patches or bare ground?
I have a question, so I bought Bermuda sod back in February for my backyard, and I have regular Bermuda in my front yard. do I do the same steps for the new sod as I do for my front yard? Like over seeding for fall. And cutting low as first
That's why I never use the peat moss from Menards. It is cheap but has a lot more of that extra crap in it. Even though I have a peat moss spreader, I still use the Lowe's brand.
Great video for all the spots my squirrels dug up!! Ty! 🙄🐿🙈 Also wanted to tell you I used a reel mower for the first time tonight and I was amazed by the cut! Loved it and might be hooked for life haha. But most of my grass was getting to 4 or 5 inches like we talked about, so I cut it and had people stopping telling me thats bad for my overseed.. haha bye I listen to Ryan and the other professionals! 😉
I just went on the urea train of terror.. and sure enough i have small burn spots where my rotary spreader kept funneling urea on the spot while i was turning, so can i expect it to green up again or can i just overseed thoose spots again even though i fertilized it hard
Hey Ryan you always have nice tips and I love the channel! I was hoping you maybe had some tips for me. I seeded some bare soil with some KBG and with the slower germination time of it I'm having some issues with the leaves on my trees falling a little early this year it would seem so I've been trying to keep the dirt clear of them but it's been difficult without disturbing the still young seedlings. How worried should I be about leaves building up and causing problems with new germination? It's been about 16 days since I planted and about 50% of the yard has good germination the rest is just starting to come in. I put down a second application of starter fertilizer three days ago and applied more seed to the really bare spots. With having to work during the day I've only been able to water in the morning and night besides weekends. Is there anything else I could be doing? Thanks a bunch
How can I best improve moisture retention on a silt/sand lawn? Can I add top soil/organic matter as a light too dress each year to slowly improve it, or would that create “layering”?
You wouldn't want the topsoil directly over the sand. Really it's not a bad thing to have that sand it's just that it has to be watered a little more frequently
Do I need to overseed if I seeded bare soil with 100% KBG 2 weeks ago? There are some spots that are not as full but wondering if it would just fill in on its own or if I needed to throw down more seed. Not sure if seeding more KBG in the northeast would be too late now since KBG takes longer than the other grass types.
Hey Ryan, I seeded a lawn from scratch in my back yard after killing everything off. After tilling the entire yard, The lawn ended up growing in literal rows. What would you recommend I do? Slice seed in the opposite direction ? Just overseed again? Leave it alone and see if it fills in (the grass seed I used is Barenbrug RTF)
Ryan, just seed sowed and hydro mulched 21k square feet have some spots like yours. If I don’t cover with peat or topsoil with over seed a week after am I going to be okay?
Went to menards for more seed normally i would have bought the cheepest biggest bag.... now my head is hurting from the fine print Then you have the empty shelf syndrome ....was that the one i was suposed to buy??? Help
Will there be any issues throwing new seed down over peat moss that I used as a covering the first time? It has been two weeks since I seeded fine fescue and I’ve got a couple spots coming in a little thin that I’d like to thicken things up.
I have clay from under compost and wet it then once its dry enough I dig it flat and mix it up and paper mache it with water and rain I wall on it when its powdery then wet it seed dirt and keep it soaking it rains in the winter lol
The peat moss spreader is definitely overpriced for what it is. I'm sure it has a huge profit margin, but honestly, it's still worth it. I've seeded several client's lawns this Fall and it saves so much time. It also just gives a professional appearance to the finished product.
I agree it's overpriced. I could rent the one from Home Depot like 27 times before it would pay for itself. If I had a business, then it'd be worth it, but for the average homeowner it's cheaper to rent. I did have the hatch pop open on me a couple times which was a pita though. I spread a sand/topsoil mix though and it worked awesome, filtered out the big chunks of bark n crap, got great results. Way easier than the shovel-throw method of spreading.
Temps are just now dropping in OK, can I use tenacity now as my pre-em then overseed in a few weeks and apply tenacity again, then use a true pre-emergent when the seedlings have gotten established?
I have been trying to wait until temps are consistently below 85 to overseed my lawn as I core aerate problem areas- is it still in the upper 80s and 90s up by you? Can I overseed now? Thanks for any advice!
I put down your Elite PRG about 2 weeks ago on brand new dirt and everything came up great! Theres a few spots where it is more spotty. Should I go throw down some more seed in those spots with some peat moss?
If one were to use a slit seeder is a peat moss layer a thing that needs to be done? or is it primarily for moisture retention? I spread peat moss by hand on about 1k this year on a new kbg reno and my back was not happy. Had some washout too due to some big rains.
@@ryanknorrlawncare I totally get that. But as a point of advise for others following in your footsteps from the lessons you learnt here, would you recommend doing the Peat at the same time?
I renovated my front lawn added Scotts turf builder built for seed. As the weed and fertilizer but after 3 weeks my lawn is starting to get crabgrass is there anything I can use to kill and prevent more coming up?
How do you reduce earthworms in general or fix the castings mid season? Doesn't it cause a ton of annoying little dirt mounds popping out of the short cut?
@@ryanknorrlawncare so you don't do anything about it? Doesn't the soil get in your reel mower blades? I've heard of Dilox but not sure if that's healthy for the soil
I still have weeds in my lawn...should I apply a weed killer and wait before reseeding and applying lime? Or should i ignore the weed killer and just go straight to reseeding and putting down lime?
You can use Tenacity (Mesotriome) at time of seeding (check your type of grass). You can buy the liquid stuff and a surfactant, and spray it when you seed, or get a starter fertilizer with Mesotriome in it. It will turn the weeds white, so you may have a white lawn for a little while but it works well for seeding. You can do another application or spot spray after a couple mows on the new grass I think. For lime, sounds like you can apply when seeding as well, or beforehand. Soil test helps with that. I know my pH is low (acidic soil) so I'm doing a couple heavy apps of lime this year and will check the soil test next spring. Sounds like it may take a while to change the pH though.
@Ryan Knorr Lawn Care I am in about the same situation, but have about 2400 sq ft. Do I seed and try and cover everything with peat moss again? Could I just put more seed down? How about mowing? I have about 2 inches of growth in about 2 weeks. Perennial Rye Grass, MO
I would appreciate any help at all I just overseeding my lawn for the first time and my leaves are starting to come down I don't know if I should mulch them in by cutting them or do I try to lightly blow them off help please

Until your first mow from what I've read but I'm a noob so hopefully Ryan will answer.
I actually talked about that in this video. :)
As you start your first few mows you can begin to transition to heavier water rates and less frequent
Have you tried mixing in some seed with your peat moss in that spreader? Seems like that would work really well.
I haven't. I am just old school and like to see the seed going down on its own visually so I know what coverage looks like.
I tried not putting lawn soil this fall. Dethatch, aerate, overseed. Hopefully it works okay.
You should try soil3 that's some good stuff. I also like the carbon pro g. Not really a top dress but similar
Ryan, what setting do you typically use on your Elite spreader when putting down your perennial Rye grass seed? Is it the same for new lawn renovation verses over seed renovation?
I would like to know as well.
That will really depend on your walking speed. I'm somewhere 5-7 usually
@@ryanknorrlawncare Thank you for your speedy reply, Ryan!
Ryan put a brick edging under your fence, it makes trimming a lot easier
Whew...glad I'm not the only one...
Got to say love that Ram! Have a question I put a perennial rye and Kentucky blue mix down. Would that be good in full sun?
That's fine in full sun
Can I overseed and still be putting down starter fertilizer?
Great video for all the spots my squirrels dug up!! Ty! 🙄🐿🙈
Also wanted to tell you I used a reel mower for the first time tonight and I was amazed by the cut! Loved it and might be hooked for life haha. But most of my grass was getting to 4 or 5 inches like we talked about, so I cut it and had people stopping telling me thats bad for my overseed.. haha bye I listen to Ryan and the other professionals! 😉
haha that reel mower will definitely become addicting
Do you continie to mow after reseeding thin spots or do you wait a week or 2? I'm using a manual reel at this time.
If you can run a leaf blower on idle and just get the the leaves off there I would think that is about your best option.
Hey Ryan, great video. Have you ever used Mycorrhizae growing medium?
I have not
Hey Ryan,
I seeded a lawn from scratch in my back yard after killing everything off. After tilling the entire yard, The lawn ended up growing in literal rows. What would you recommend I do? Slice seed in the opposite direction ? Just overseed again? Leave it alone and see if it fills in (the grass seed I used is Barenbrug RTF)
Probably slice in at a 45 degree angle or broadcast over everything
Ryan, just seed sowed and hydro mulched 21k square feet have some spots like yours. If I don’t cover with peat or topsoil with over seed a week after am I going to be okay?
Yo thanks for showing me how to open the grass seed lol I've been hacking those bags up
what if you threw a handful of medium size stone into that thing, it would probably break up the compost while you're rolling it
Do you recommend the sprinkler at 5:10? If so, do you have a link or a name? Thanks!

I Alway learn something from you
Thanks.. !
Went to menards for more seed normally i would have bought the cheepest biggest bag.... now my head is hurting from the fine print
Then you have the empty shelf syndrome ....was that the one i was suposed to buy???
Help
Will there be any issues throwing new seed down over peat moss that I used as a covering the first time? It has been two weeks since I seeded fine fescue and I’ve got a couple spots coming in a little thin that I’d like to thicken things up.
Good question I did that and didn’t get good germination in those reseeded areas
@@alceja3522 I went for it and had ok results. Not the best but much better than the first time
I have clay from under compost and wet it then once its dry enough I dig it flat and mix it up and paper mache it with water and rain I wall on it when its powdery then wet it seed dirt and keep it soaking it rains in the winter lol
Ryan I live in des moines so not to far off from ya, any reccomendtations on getting my soil tested a local company I can use
What to do with peat moss leftovers ?
The peat moss spreader is definitely overpriced for what it is. I'm sure it has a huge profit margin, but honestly, it's still worth it. I've seeded several client's lawns this Fall and it saves so much time. It also just gives a professional appearance to the finished product.
My local home Depot has them for rent for $9.00 for four hours
No need for it early. Just apply at time of seeding
That spreader works awesome... doing it by hand is a dirty job LoL
I was just wondering if I needed to put more seed down
What do you find you get for coverage with the peat spreader out of one bag? Trying to figure out how many bags i need. Thank you.
I can barely cover 2,000 sqft with three peat moss blocks. 4 would be better. So I guess 500 sqft per peat moss block
I have been trying to wait until temps are consistently below 85 to overseed my lawn as I core aerate problem areas- is it still in the upper 80s and 90s up by you? Can I overseed now? Thanks for any advice!
Still very warm here but we'll have frost in probably 4-5 weeks. 👎
I put down your Elite PRG about 2 weeks ago on brand new dirt and everything came up great! Theres a few spots where it is more spotty. Should I go throw down some more seed in those spots with some peat moss?
Doesn't hurt
Yes. Thats exactly what he did in the video.
Love the caution tape. My HOA.... not so much.
Should you also do this with kbg? Or stay patient?
Personally I add a little more blue as well. You can let it go and it will spread but it's not a quick process
If one were to use a slit seeder is a peat moss layer a thing that needs to be done? or is it primarily for moisture retention? I spread peat moss by hand on about 1k this year on a new kbg reno and my back was not happy. Had some washout too due to some big rains.
You should be ok if it was seeding into the ground
@@ryanknorrlawncare Thank you for the response!
Do you wish you had of put down the Peat same day you did the original leveling/seeding?
Not really. I like to experiment with different options and methods
@@ryanknorrlawncare I totally get that. But as a point of advise for others following in your footsteps from the lessons you learnt here, would you recommend doing the Peat at the same time?
My home Depot has been sold out of peat moss for 2 months.
I renovated my front lawn added Scotts turf builder built for seed. As the weed and fertilizer but after 3 weeks my lawn is starting to get crabgrass is there anything I can use to kill and prevent more coming up?
Tenacity can be used to kill weeds when seeding or with new grass.
crabgrass dies off in winter so just use a preventative next spring
Good job. Go Vikings!
8:37 I got all like... Why is that weed there! It needs to go NOW lol.
How do you reduce earthworms in general or fix the castings mid season? Doesn't it cause a ton of annoying little dirt mounds popping out of the short cut?
Yep it ruins a lot of grass. It's annoying
@@ryanknorrlawncare so you don't do anything about it? Doesn't the soil get in your reel mower blades? I've heard of Dilox but not sure if that's healthy for the soil
@@douglasauruss nothing is labeled for worms that I know of
how do you prevent ants form taking off with your seed ?
@@benharrison5816 thank you!
You can try just more seed and I just keep on mowing like usual, even as the new stuff comes in
@@ryanknorrlawncare Fantastic! Also, thank you for taking your own personal time to respond. It has been a pleasure learning from you! Great work!
Would you recommend raking in seed as opposed to covering with peat moss, or would that not work because some seed wouldn't be covered?
That spreader is clutch
I would appreciate any help at all I just overseeding my lawn for the first time and my leaves are starting to come down I don't know if I should mulch them in by cutting them or do I try to lightly blow them off help please
Lightly blow them off if you can
