I would just like to say thank you to the interviewer, you were amazing. Fran interviews are always good but interviewers rarely know the right questions to ask and are not good at getting below the surface. I think you did, thanks you

I think that’s actually can be a liberating and positive thing. We’re so worried about pressure and what others think or expectations of us. I realized no one really knows or thinks about you as much as you think. So just do what you want to do and your own thing.

She's not lying about Algebra. One of the most worthless things ever taught. I could not grasp it, and I consider myself lucky that I was able to graduate from high school without having to take it. I'm 54 years old, and have never used it in my life, not once. Yet in high school, I was NEVER taught how to file my income taxes.

I wouldn't. The spoken word is fantastic. And combined with her brilliance and delivery and uncanny memory, words couldn't touch the words being spoken by her. In these interviews, it's a one woman show and she doesn't have to fly anywhere, go out, catch a cab, or spend money.

I love Eleanor and love that she gave the web address and the telephone number. I have experienced how fortress like media is. There's one medium, a major medium, CBS or something, where accessing anyone by phone or email is impossible. They really are removed from the viewer and the reader. I hope Fran stays grounded and uses her bravery and uniqueness to stay honest and not a pretender. Anyone who loves Nancy Drew mysteries AND the artwork, has to remain incredulous. I have read the classics, not hundreds or thousands, but enough to know Nancy Drew empowered millions of young girls who were and are marginalized to death.

I noticed the laughter too -as if they were all trying to show how sophisticated they all were - that they got it. In those moments I felt that Lebowitz must at times really dislike her audience. Perhaps it is the problem of becoming too mainstream. She talks fondly about her audience when she wrote for Interview however...

Very interesting interview with equally articulate questions from the interviewer and responses from Fran Lebowitz. I always find F. Lebowitz's thoughts critically refreshing. However, I do not find her thoughts on literature -- even if it's just her "opinion" -- as articulated in this interview quite convincing. Even if human beings think in language, it does not follow from this circumstance that they think in complete and well-structured sentences. It also does not follow that good literature cannot allow itself to reflect upon the relatiionship between thinking and language by precisely breaking some of the grammarian-imposed rules of syntax. Moreover, literature need not be modern to allow itself to do so (the 18/19-century German poet Hoelderlin is a good example to the countrary). Finally, it does not follow from the aforesaid circumstance that it is literature's duty to fulfill some task of correspondence between one brain (that of the author) and another one (that of the reader).

Interesting point about wit. Brits are masters of the withering witty response. When an unseasoned American receives one of those, they tend to be like deer in headlights. :-)
But I disagree with her a bit about nostalgia. The music industry has certainly changed, but there’s still a lot being created. Nobody (other than mega stars) makes money from CDs...so they tend to release their music themselves over the internet. Part of Fran’s perception may stem from the fact that she doesn’t deal in technology. No Internet, no cell phone, no computer. That’s her right, but if, say, she had refused in her day to use a record player and use LPs or cassettes, it would be a little disingenuous to say “nobody’s producing anything new.” It’s kind of like sticking your fingers in your ears and complaining that nobody has anything to say.
I’m not sure who she’s hanging with; I’m in my early 60s and work with several people in their 20s. I love hearing the music they put on at work because of all the new sounds. Sure they listen to some old stuff too, because it’s good. In the 60s and 70s, I was listening to some things from the 40s and 50s too, but also what was current. If anything, I see lots of young people who have no idea about older music.
