    Paul Claffey's Lost Creek Sn3 layout was built over the course of about thirteen years. The top deck has scenery around two thirds of it, and it's amazing.
    Join us for a tour of this layout, as it is scheduled to be dismantled within weeks after the video was made. Paul gives us a look at what operations on his layout are like over the finished portion of the layout, then gives us a brief look at the rest of the unfinished parts.
    Paul's attention to detail and scratch-building skills are sure to impress even the pickiest modelers.

    It always hits me hard when I hear these layouts have to be dismantled or abandoned. But, believe me, as long as this video stays online, the layout will continue to live. It will continue to wow and inspire people to get into and push on in our hobby. Many thanks for your hard work!

    John, I’m thankful that you had the opportunity to record this beautiful layout. Paul’s work is awesome! Particularly the background painting, and of course all the stumps and trees! Shame it is being dismantled!

    I love to play the game Railroads Online, where you have to lay down your own track to get lumber, exactly in that era.
    I've always wondered how people who know more than me "imagine" the operations to be like, this video is very helpful for that.

    Beautifully designed and executed layout. This is the most impressive large logging theme layout I've ever seen. Your presentation is inspiring both for my ongoing layout track planning and for visualizing scenic design. Thanks for sharing! Wish I could have seen it in person.

    Logging railroading has a special place in my heart for some reason. I used to live 5 miles from the Collier Logging Museum off of Hwy 97 by Chiloquin, OR. Growing up near the old OC&E line and later Weyerhaeuser railroad was just a normal daily occurrence as the log bunk cars brought in loads from forests near Bly, OR. This was in 1978-84 after that I left for the Army but by the early 90’s the writing was in the wall that the line would be closed. The people of Klamath Falls wanted to keep the line going for an excursion line but nothing made momentum, I’m not sure what happened. As a young man my mentors were railroaders and loggers, I can still smell the sawdust and oil those men had on them coming home each day. Another fun thing was when we were up in the forests around the county we’d find old logging railroad lines that were just the roadbeds but no rails and very few ties/sleepers. The line would snake around the side of the mountain. The McGiffort loader always amazed me, just a weird beast that did a great job.
    You did a great job on this layout, well done!

    Very nice work. One day I would love to do a logging layout, mostly because I love Shay locomotives. Kind of a shame you have to abandon this one; the finished portions are beautiful.

    Beautiful layout. Excellent work effort and very sorry to hear it will be abandoned due to health reasons. That is a real shame and loss of talent. Is it possible that this layout could be dismantled and donated to a RR club or museum? We could get volunteers to disassemble the layout and rebuild it as a monument to the designer/fabricator.

    I have, as one of my most prized back issues of Model Railroader magazine, the April 1967 issue. In it, the featured layout is Hank Johnston's Bullfrog Logging Company. Hank was also an author who wrote books on logging in California such as Rails Through the Redwoods. Unlike some other well known layouts of that day with their plethora of locomotives and rolling stock with large areas full of track, Hank made do with, as I recall, three locomotives and a handful of cars on layout that was about 10-ft. x 18-ft.. The only regret, that I have, is that the photographs except the cover are in black and white.

    Its amazing to me the amount of work Modelers put into their layouts! Im 4 years into a much smaller layout and seem to have gotten very little done, even though I work dilligently on my layout for 6 months out of the year! It has to hurt to tear out a layout with as much done as you have gotten!!!

    Ok so S scale is S and the track is 30 inch gauge which works out to be 1:87 HO?

    • @tsgmultimedia
      @tsgmultimedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not exactly. S scale is 1:64 and the track is S scale 3' narrow gauge track.
      HO Scale (standard gauge) works out to be about the same distance between the rails as O scale 30" (narrow gauge) track.
      This is why it's important to know the difference between the words "scale" and "gauge." Some people mistakenly use them synonymously, but they are very different words with very different meanings. If you're interested in more information about this, you're welcome to view the Model Railroading 101 programs released on this channel that deal with scale and gauge.
      All about scale: th-cam.com/video/AzktN0iAVCQ/w-d-xo.html
      All about gauge: th-cam.com/video/mzdK0Lh9-WQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @claffp
      @claffp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      layout is Sn3 - the three refers to 3-foot gauge. Since S scale is 1:64, this gauge would be 36/64 or 9/16 in actual inches. Narrower than HO track. Going the other way, HO track would be 42" gauge in S scale.
