    Sorry that happened to you. Very cool of you to show how you solved the issue, though. Appreciate what you do.

    Great tip, the oil. Off grid Rockies and have had more than a few of those nests. One creature drug a plastic, paint tray, about 13 inches by 19 inches under hood before we began leaving hoods up. Glad we never met at night. Good show. Thanks.

    Used peppermint oil mixed into 303 protectant and added a few Pure Evil Capsaicin Drops.
    If you need to work in the space any time after that I would skip the hot sauce lol

    I watched the whole vid waiting to comment about Pepp Oil, lol. I use the same spray mix method (on EVERYthing outside that has wiring. Including my A/C, mower, etc. ) but I also cram cotton in the toe of knee-hi stockings, tie it to something handy under the hood and it's easy to just re-soak it regularly w/ the undiluted oil. I use the spray to cover more areas including the wheel wells and tires themselves (access points).
    ** worth noting! I do this year-round, BUT pay EXTRA attention in the Fall & Spring, that's their most active 'nesting' seasons.
    Those repellent sachets are always rip-offs, they work (if at all) for about a week.

    I feel your pain. My friend left a car sitting for a while and then desperately needed it going again. Around a dozen wires right at the computer were chewed along with the spark plug wires. Sometimes you just have to make it happen!

      @falkornomad  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, unfortunately this was not my first Rodeo with rat modified wires… they got my F350 Ranch truck years ago… a wire bundle 1.5” in diameter, about 30 wires for the main harness… 80% chewed through. That was a full day of splicing.

    When I delivered to people in the mountains they would typically leave their car or truck hoods open to keep the engine bay colder and exposed to light. Does not have to be open all the way and you can tie it down with a block to keep it from flying off in a wind storm.

      Yeah, I did that this last time with a 8” 4x4 post👍🏽

    Miraculous you got that harness fixed without crossing something up. Great work. I had a mouse (Isaw her and her nest made out of my vintage book and a towel. in my trunk while I was using my car, letting it sit a few days at a time. I put all kinds of smells in it, ending in mint oil. All through the car so it wouldn't just migrate. Have seen no evidence of meeces since. I stuck a block of poison in. No nibbles on it.

    Very practical approach. Could've paid hundreds for replacement harness and have been no better off - even resale value won't be affected.

    Okay I didn't even think of rodents when you leave your vehicle for an extended period. Noted. Because that's what I'm going to be doing. Thanks for the tip about the peppermint oil that.

    I have had best results with straight undiluted essential oil dribbled liberally at entry spots and under the hood of my 88 Sunrader to keep phylum rodenta at bay. I find that watering it down does just that. And, you are a prodigious problem solver and builder of things!

      I just left a similar comment about the undiluted oil ... cram cotton in the toes of knee-hi stockings and tie it to something, then just re-treat regularly with the oil. : )

    I shouldn't chuckle, but I am. We have an old Expedition that the local pack rats are in love with. We literally just got it out of the shop yesterday (again) because a rat chewed through the coolant line. (again) At least they didn't rip out $3000 worth of electrical wires or build a nest in the engine out of engine parts. (again) My exterminator has been battling the little bastards for three years now.

    Very clever fix on Subaru!! May as well get some peppermint growing around areas where you want to park vehicles long term. get some good stuff man! Its like tear gas to rodents . They will leave the area. Good for planting around foundation of house

    • @falkornomad
      @falkornomad  ปีที่แล้ว

    Going back to your 1/8" plywood, what kind of blade or technique did you use to cut it without it spitting or delaminating, when I cut thin plywood even with a many teeth blade, the wood disintegrates along the cut.
    Sorry about your wiring. Great videos. I'm going back to watch them again.

    • @falkornomad
      @falkornomad  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The trick is you want the blades teeth to push the presentation side of the ply into the core of the ply when cutting, they make jig saw blades that cut on either the down stroke or the up stroke… I would use the down stroke cutting blade when I wanted to cut the ply with its presentation side facing up towards me.

    • @jamelcampbell4984
      @jamelcampbell4984 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@falkornomad thank you, I have been cutting my wood opposite and wrong, or at least using the wrong blades, thank you. I'm used to using 1 or 2 blades, time to go find others. Again thank you for explaining this to me.

    BMW sells an electrified rodent zapper system to prevent Marten (a small german weasel) from chewing the wires under the hood, in this way they are much like your rats. It is unofficially referred to as "Das Marten Waffe". One could envision a similar system that could be fabricated at very low cost to achieve similar results powered by battery and a solar panel for extended use.

  • @fredflintstone4715

    You could also have put the black RTV goop in the shrink wrap before heating it to let the goop be pushed between the wires a little better when the wrap shrinks.

    Try mothballs to repel the rodents. I live on a river (river rats) and it works for me.

    Be glad it wasn't a European vehicle or a Tesla. They use a biodegradable plant based insulation on their wires and rodents love the stuff.
    I worked for a company that manufactured racing dog boxes that replace the bed on a truck. We always soldiered every connection of every wire, in a very specific way. When I mentioned to my boss how much faster crimp connectors would be he asked me if I had ever seen a box come in that didn't have working lights. I thought about it, and the answer was no. "That's right," he said, "done right a soldiered connection will last 20 years." I had seen boxes come in that were over a decade old, the floors and metal frame would be falling out from all the urine build up but the electrical systems all worked.
    The process we used was to weave the strands of two wires together, soldier, coat with liquid electrical tape, wrap with electrical tape, coat a second time.
    Over the years I discovered using a pencil torch and soldier paste flux allows one to soldier salt water corroded copper or copper to aluminum wires.
    I practiced this method on my boat's wire harness and never once had something not work when I hit a switch. (excluding the device itself) I used that boat for 5 years and sometimes it would sit under a tarp for half a year, everything always worked.
