Match of the Day Goal of the Season 1994-95

  • I've never known what to make of Nayim's goal. Was that really what he meant to do? I think it was roughly 98% luck, 1% audacity and 1% trying to waste a bit of time and play for penalties, but perhaps I'm doing him a disservice. I certainly won't deny that it looked spectacular - but "jammy" doesn't even begin to cover it! I dunno...
Speaking of which, John Barnes can't do that! One for the scrapbook, indeed. I bet he was out for weeks following his acrobatics in scoring that goal. I'm convinced that Matt Le Tissier's goal against Blackburn took the gong this year, and deservedly so. Andy Clarke netted a fine effort to be a contender, but I've little doubt that the irony factor played and even bigger part in its selection (a passing goal by Wimbledon against Liverpool - perish the thought!).
The music, incidentally, is The Life of Riley by the Lightning Seeds - a song I will forever associate with the Goal of the Month/Season competition.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

I used to enjoy motd back then watching the likes of Le Tissier scoring them 30 - 40 yard goals which he made look so easy.

It's downhill for you too if you continue to restrict your own players. I hope not. You have the talent. Give them the chance. Seeing Englands under 22's, 21's, 20's and 19's dominate this year. I hope you give them all a chance. They deserve it. For a nation your size you should have 80-100 players that are good enough for the national team every year.

Players such as McAteer, Riedle, Friedel and (ho ho) Sean Dundee were all Evans signings (I think) after Collymore that cost in excess of £1m - not much by today's standards, but quite an investment back then. Been digging through your channel and I'm glad I found this. Le Tissier's chip against the Rovers was a piece of fine art, skimming through those defenders like if those defenders were me before nicking that goal from 40 yards away. Bloody legendary. Undoubtedly one of the most phenomenal shots in Premier League history, and the man himself was so underused it's criminal. I don't even think Le Tiss has even had a _bad_ shot in his whole career. Hell, you can even see some of the Blackburn supporters in the crowd cheering him on after that, which I can honestly respect.

Yeah, it's probably still my favourite Premier League goal. I think the Blackburn fans _and_ Tim Flowers all had a sort of "Well, nothing we can do about that, so may as well enjoy it" sort of attitude about it.

It's Match of the Day's goal of the season, not the Premier League's goal of the season. As long as the BBC showed it back then, it qualified. That said, they were _really_ inconsistent about it.

You know what mate that was my exact same thought watching this video! Especially the Andy Clarke picture! For me the golden era of the Premiership. I seem to remember this season's album being blue with Paul Merson and Ryan Giggs on the front, and the year later it was black! Ah, I can still feel the disappointment now of opening 8 packs in one go and getting Lee Clark or Frank Sinclair at least twice in them!

I think Nayim did intend that shot; the swing he gave it was far too strong to be a pass to either of his teammates, who were not all that far ahead of him.

Former Coventry, Birmingham, Sheffield United and Huddersfield winger Peter Ndlovu has been critically injured in a car crash in his native Zimbabwe.
The accident, in Victoria Falls, claimed the life of his elder brother Adam, who was also a professional footballer.
The pair were returning from a friendly match between the Highlanders Legends and a Victoria Falls team.
A female passenger is also reported to have died in the accident.

Exactly! The hyperbole that surrounds modern football has blown a lot of people's judgement out of all proportion, to the extent that young fans will say "Stan who?" while deifying any old showpony that prances about the pitch, . But when I see old clips of Stan at his best, what with his pace, his power, his control-at-speed and his blistering finishing, squint your eyes and (dare I say it) you could almost be fooled into thinking you're watching an old clip of Ronaldo. Such a sad waste.

Pretty sure that year there were once 3 Le T goals out of 10 for the Goal of the Month. None were flukes and none were superfluous. Blackburn we lost 3:2 but look at his face after scoring - the result was all, to him the goal wasn't important. Beckham would have launched a new aftershave before the restart. Le Tiss might bring 30 seconds of magic but that magic was unique and justified the ticket price and more. An absolutely irreplaceable talent and one that I'm glad I was there to appreciate.

What is the name of this song???? I have a few old VHS of the goal of the month, and the goal of the season from the 96-97 campaign. I've been trying all this time to find the name of this theme tune. Even emailed the BBC when they had a name that tune section, where you could request the title of a song used a background music in any of their sports shows.

I regularly finished with 10 of the same sticker as it was so common everyone else would have 10 of them as well - those particular ones used to finish up being given in at the Swap Shops. I don't buy in to the theory at they are completely random and equal at all!

Yeah I kind of see what you mean, there were more sensible options on. But he was a flair kind of player and he means it because he has a look up. The luck element comes in the form that if he tried that 100 times he couldn't do it again.
Poor old Seaman. His kryptonite, long looping shots.

Oh really? I never knew that. Sounds like a bit of a bellend if that's true, albeit a hugely talented bellend. Do you remember any anecdotal examples of his behaviour from those books, out of interest?

Shearer's was an astonishing strike but didn't get good camera coverage. Was less of a looper than Le Tissier's, just pure power spanked in off the bar.

Yeah true, the BBC is conscious about that kind of thing. When they had Alan Pardew as a guest the other week, they had Hansen but ditched Shearer for Dixon, lest they have 3 Alans and look discriminatory against non-Alans.
