I just bought a harmonica a couple of days ago, because I sit in a forklift all night on an industrial site in Northern Canada. But, I'm not that busy. It's no place for me to bring my guitar, and I've always wanted to learn a harmonica. And if you think about it, it's pretty ridiculous that there's this weird character, in the dark, sitting in a forklift, playing a harmonica.
So, I was looking around on TH-cam, and I found you. Since then I've been entertaining the heck out of myself in my forklift, because I've been learning from your videos.
But that's not why I'm taking the time to write a comment on here. The reason I'm writing a comment is because I want to tell you, that you're maybe one of the coolest people I've ever seen do any kind of instructional video on TH-cam. Just your vibe, is so awesome. You are definitely a very rad human being!

Love this lick. I never could get the guitar and harmonica together. I spent the late 60s and early 70s driving across Texas at night traveling from one rodeo to the next holding the steering wheel with my knees playing country songs on the harp.

Honestly I've wanted to learn the harmonica for years as I always though it was such a cool instrument. I bought one a few months ago and kind of gave up pretty quickly when I realised how long it must take to master. However, your videos are so easy to watch and understand, and then there's how good you make them sound, you've given me a second wind to stick with it. Much love.

If I may suggest when starting…if you overplay your lips and mouth get tired until they “muscle up” and your lips develop “calluses”. I got frustrated at first until I got past that. 15 mins is a good start.

Juzzie Smith, You are the BEST !!
A good friend who played harmonica for 65 years recently passed away. He could make the instrument
walk and talk, and was a joy to hear, solo, or with the many musicians he jammed with over the years.
When she learned that he played harmonica, the doctor in the ICU put together a multi-hour blues
harmonica play list, to help ease his passing into the next world... Bless her heart...
Some time later, his friends discovered his legacy, a mini-SD card [ one-quarter the size of a postage stamp ]
containing hours of his playing and jamming, material for a CD he never got to put together...
OMG, What a Treasure ! His friends will be playing along at his memorial...

I finally let my desire to play music take hold pretty late in life. Started to learn guitar at 37, had a good teacher who through trial and error finally got it to click for me when he started me playing the blues. I imagine that’s the way for many given the relative simplicity of the blues.
I took up the harmonica a bit later and can play along pretty well to any song when I know the key and can get the right harp.
This little set of lessons is really good Juzz. Reminds me very much of my guitar teacher. You break it down nicely into logical structures and your casual passion for emphasising the importance of the feel and enjoyment just takes it from there. Very cool.

In the mid-80s I was taking harmonica lessons at McCabe’s in Santa Monica, California. During that time I saw Paul Butterfield at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach. He played this riff during a song. I didn’t know it, but I was able to keep it in mind until the next lesson. My instructor said it was one of the most famous riffs in blues. From “I’m a man,” sometimes sung as “Mannish Boy,” or “Hoochie Coochie Man.” All the blues greats had a version of it. Watch Muddy Waters sing it during the film “The Last Waltz.” With Paul Butterfield on harmonica.

I pick up the bass last April (2022), never play a instrument in my 63 years. I know play in the band at our church and have sat in on a few jams. The mouth harp has always been on my list. Yes Muddy Waters’, “Manish Boy”, is THE song. You can Juan, improve lyrics etc. Your tutorial earned my subscription.

I stumbled across this video and honestly can’t remember how I ended up here lol. I have played guitar so long it just comes naturally. So music is in my blood and I said what would be a fun add on instrument. So one day on a trip I stopped by Cracker Barrel and picked a cheap 10$ harmonica and had a lot of fun. Well I was gifted one in the key of E and had good intentions for it but I never was able to get it to do what i wanted to do with it. This video was one of those were it’s like oh it was that simple but I would never had figured it out. Great video. You did an excellent job explaining how to play. Now I wish I still had my harmonica in the hey of C lol.

Your energy is fantastic and you're always smiling. The world needs more of you. I ordered a Hohner Special 20 the other day, hope it's got the growl I'm looking for but either way, I think I'll take your course and get after it. I got a cheap harmonica when I was a kid. I had no attention span and no patience, plus nobody to teach me, so it went into a drawer. I moved to drums and percussion and I was pretty good right out of the box, so I stuck with it until I was through college. The other day I mentioned to my wife that a harp might be fun to have so I could jam with my blues playing guitar buddies and she surprised me with a Fender Blues Deluxe. As I got to know the instrument, I could tell there were a few things I didn't like about it, so I went and bought an East Top 008K in C. Quite a difference! I'm stepping through your lesson package and watching your videos. I may actually know what I'm doing some day, I'm having a blast!

And how he interacted with people while playing it made me want to do that.. although I probably never will. Never seen you live, but I've seen you on TH-cam, and always been entertained. Charlie Musselwhite said to me once, the blues is fun, And I agree. With him and and you. You are a great teacher. I played guitar, but wanted to play Neil Young, so I bought a stand and a hohner blues harp. Once a reed broke off, and I sucked it down into my lungs. Forgot about it. After a long time I stated coughing blood, so doc sent me to an X- ray. I got called back, and the radiologist said I might have a tumor, but it was rectangular, he'd never seen anything like it. " Can I have look" ? That's my G- reed! ☺ Just left it . Thanks!

There are several brands of tremolos that try to market themselves as blues harmonicas. Some of the ads call them diatonics (which technically they are) but it confuses new players. They show up on the forums wondering why it doesn't sound like they want. Occasionally we'll get people who inherited a chromatic or something, but thankfully, new players tend not to shell out for a chromatic without checking things out.
When I saw your title I was guessing the riff from Juke, but you are right, that's way more iconic. :)

Thank you, helped me a lot. I didn't realize I have improved over the past months just playing from the little music in my head. I'll get a beat in my head or hear something that sounds good ,like what I just heard you playing and I try to replicate it on the harmonica, then I'll record it because it helps me listen to my mistakes. I'll never be professional, really not trying to be but just playing something from my mind, heart that makes me and others feel good. That's what I believe music should be to make you feel good, happy and put a smile in someone's heart. I truly believe music and laughter can bring healing to the body and soul. I love music and I love laughter but more than that is to give or bring that out of people and we all can make this joyful sound that makes music and make someone's day better and they leave a better person. Thank you again. Subscribed and make this world a better place with joyful music.

I've played that lick on harp for ages and I watched the whole video just because the things you were saying were so true. Yes y'all should check out Muddy and yes you do get a little dizzy (AND look a little psycho) with yer eyes open, shaking back and forth on a tremolo note. I wish I could teach half as well as you do. Good heavens! Way to take something and break it down but keep the joy in it. Bravo!

I’m 69 years old. I have COPD. My doctor suggested I pick up a harmonica and learn to play. The suck and blow helps strengthen my lungs. It the best thing to loosen things up and it’s great fun. The more licks and tunes I learn Amazes me. Old dogs can learn new tricks. 🦏.

The harmonica made the Blues so much more than it could be. My other favorite harmonica pieces are from Midnight Cowboy and Moon River.
