  • Have you always wanted to play blues harmonica? Begin here, with a harmonica in the key of C. Your host is Adam Gussow of Modern Blues Harmonica. Gussow also appears in "Satan & Adam," a documentary about his longtime blues duo currently screening on Netflix. The harmonica is a Hohner Marine Band.
Here are two beginner's packages that will help you build on what I've shown you in this video:

My husband... Where do I start. Being retired, he's been trying to find something to do to fill his hours of "him time". God save us all, he's found music. He's tried trumpet. That found it's way into the trash one day. He bought a violin that "fell behind a cabinet and is currently still "missing". Then he some friends gave him their Marlboro codes and he got a harmonica through the mail las week... I nearly drove it up his ass with my foot last week until I came across this tutorial. I sat him down in front of the laptop with that horrible noise maker of his. Well, it's a week later now. He's no maestro, but then again, his playing is far better than something that sounds like a cat with it's nuts in a vice, so thank you very much for the video! His playing sounds allot better and he continues to improve daily. Good job! :)

Adam, I have had my blues harp for 25 years and played it briefly at the start. Coincidentally, it is a Hohner in 'C'. I hung.on to it because I knew one day I would pick it up again. Now, at the age of 61, you have inspired me to get started. Thanks for starting me on this journey.

I just watched "Satan and Adam". Thank you. One of the biggest troubles in life, in my mind, is that one can never hear it all.... I am not terribly religious in the literal sense, but I suppose it feels like what I feel when I hear the music that moves me. Thank you for the insight and inspiration that you afforded us with the window that is the documentary. I was truly moved

I have had my Hohner C for quite a long time. I am very good at it. I can play many notes all at the same time! I also practice while I am driving. I go about 60mph and hold it out the window; people think I am waving, but the harp sounds amazing. With the help of this tutorial, I may even be able to play actual harmonic notes and make identifiable music. Very instrumental (no pun) and easy to follow. Thank you for keeping it fun, simple, and learnable.

By far the best instructions on playing the blues on harmonica. I was ripping it up once he said 4 is an important note and the draw and ta ta. Amazing video! I had one question though will leading the blues on the harmonica make learning the blues on 🎸 a bit easier..... I have 15 + years playing and still can't play the blues like I want. That's why I picked up the harmonica in the first place..

So funny Adam can't stop breaking out into a riff lol Love it! I've been watching a few blues tutorials and this is the first one that's working for me. I play a bunch of other instruments but when I got hold of a harmonica all I could play was major scale tunes. So of course I had to figure out how to play the Wizard (I grew up on Sabbath in the 70s) but you really can't learn that riff without knowing how to play blues on this thing, so here I am. Thanks Adam!

I suspect that when you go back over it, you suddenly find yourself understanding small but important things that you couldn't hear or understand during previous viewings. That's a sign that real learning is going on. Trust those insights! That's right where your edge is.

I'm bending and having fun and you are giving me things I didn't know my tongue can do to get the sounds I want. I'm not a chicken, I'm 73. My Sicilian family played some harmonica. I feel and love the blues and only started playing a few years ago. I have not been able to play without hearing some blues background and you....YOU are giving me what I need to create music I can play solo. I get a bit winded and have to rest here and there. I am so happy. And you are so generous to give this free info. I understand that. I'm and artist, not a con and I've been giving away much art, so when I die, it doesn't have to be thrown away LOL.
