I bought an old Airstream from a military surplus lot. It had been used by the Air Force at White Sands in the early 60’s for astronaut training, the astronaut trainees would rest in the trailer between sessions. The interior was like new, but all the interior parts, like the stove, fridge, toilet, tub, and such were in pink enamel. I paid $2k for it
@@Tanya-bk7hf It was sitting on the lot at the surplus place with a “for sale” sign on it. My mom had bought 4 acres out in the middle of nowhere, and I thought the trailer would be a good place to stay while building a house.

I look at a lot of these small trailers, they are supposed to be the affordable option. Every time I look up the price, they’re $40k-$60k. Who are they affordable for? Not the average American middle class family these days.
You can buy lots of older campers and tow capable trucks and SUV's for $5-$10k . This is a brand new luxury trailer in 2024. Yeah, it's for rich people, but not the only option to enjoy RVs and camping if you are on a budget.
@@tdgros88 most people that can afford a $60k trailer would likely buy something larger for that money. A $5k-$10k truck would cost you more in repairs and down time than if you just sent the money to buy a good tow vehicle.
@@TheGersh18 Definitely not true on the tow vehicle. I bought a 2004 Toyota Sequoia 4WD with 250k mi in 2019. It has about 280k miles now 5 years later, I've only spent about $3k in maintenance (new tires, AC repairs, replacing all the brakes and rotors, valve cover gaskets, rear trunk handle). The car is actually still worth $6,000 today. I have a 2018 21ft rear bath with slide out, I paid $18k for in 2022, but I was still able to find stuff way cheaper had I been on a budget. These air streams are quality built luxury items. I'm not saying I would buy one, they are for a niche market. The point is there are affordable options for people if you want them.

There are complaints about the cost of these trailers. I've spent years repairing, renovating and restoring sailboats. I live on a 50 year old boat and have for 35 years. There is nothing cheap about putting everything needed for a comfortable life in a 16ft x 8ft space. The craftsmanship has to be precise without changing shape with movement. Everything has to be serviceable, repairable and cleanable.
This isn't a one-off sailboat. This is (somewhat) mass produced in a factory. It doesn't require a shipwright to screw in cabinets/fixtures assembled on a bench. We had airstream trailers as a kid. No doubt that are the Cadillac of RVs. But have to say the price is insane.

67k for a trailer that is built like a Cessna airplane that costs a million dollars isn't a bad deal. It's expensive, yes, so it's not for everyone. As far as prices, airstream prices have always been pretty consistent. The variations are due to material and labor costs which vary all the time.
