Great, great point. Elway hung 2 trophies as an old QB with the most dominant run game in the NFL. But as a younger man Elway was the best in the league and carried garbage teams to the slaughter in the SB 3 times. Meanwhile Montana was essentially Troy Aikman but gets thought of as the gold standard for QBs with the greatest team in the league. Montana on those Broncos teams has no rings; Elway on those Niners teams probably had 5 or 6 rings.

As a Colts fan it’s so difficult to look back at the 2000s and only see one super bowl. Peyton never had consistent defenses throughout his career and so many playoff games didn’t go his way.
Respectively Peyton Manning is The GOAT. It certainly helps to have a top rated defense all but 2 seasons of his career as defense usually wins championships! Manning 5 MVP's Brady 3 and Manning 7 1st team All-Pro teams Brady 3. Brandy's team went 11-5 in his fill injured season while Mannings went 2-15. Manning has had a 15th or worse defense all but 2 seasons of his career. I can't even imagine how many Super Bowls Manning might have won if he had a top 10 defense all but 2 seasons of his career. Also all records that Brady has passed Manning in took more seasons played than Manning took to achieve them in. Manning also proved his versatility as the only player to get to the Super Bowl 4 times with four different head coaches proving he could win in any system under any coach.

Both QB's have taken a team with a bottom half of the league scoring defense to the superbowl. Patriots went 11-5 without Brady, but that was a 5 game drop off from the previous season. Patriots were also trying to win games. The Colts without Manning were actively trying to lose games to draft Andrew Luck. Very bad comparison. Brady took more years because he had less passing attempts then Manning. When you look at them with equal passing attempts, which is more important, they are very similar. Brady has edge in some things Manning has the edge in some things. This past year Brady also proved his versatility winning with a different team and coach. You can make the argument Manning is a better regular season QB, but Brady was definitely better in the postseason. Brady's QBR is better then Manning in both regular season and post season. I do think Manning is one of the best all time, but I don't see how you can put him above Brady (I do think the margin is very slim).

Defense plays harder because they believe they just need to give TB one drive and he will score. That's what they talk about when they say that great players elevate those around them.

That he carried the Colts to 2 super bowls is amazing. Remember in 2011 when Peyton was out for the whole year, the team claimed they were going to change how they ran things. They sure changed a whole lot by just asking a younger QB to carry the team with less talent around him. We must never forget that the Colts had the 2 best QB prospects of the last 30 years and failed to put good defenses. Watching recievers get blown up on grainy film for 30 minutes really puts in perspective how much the game has changed in 20 years. I like not having to go "ouch, that's a concussion" three times a game anymore and overall, the players of my favourite sport not getting killed on the field is definitely a plus. I think we might have overcorrected it a little as far as defensive holding etc... though and I'd like the defenders not having to play with a hand tied behind their back.

Basically, Manning couldn't rely on his team to bail him out when he played poorly, and could barely rely on them when he played well. Yes, I think he could have won more Super Bowls, but if Brady's ridiculous 7 SB wins weren't in the picture I don't think people would be so quick to hate on Manning. Yeah, winning is a team stat, like TDs or yards. Those measure the guard's blocking, the receivers ability to run decoy routes etc. Heck, they even measure the Line Backers ability to stop the opponent so they don't have to force it.

Not the end all be all stat to judge defenses by, but the amount of top 10 defenses by least points allowed that the Pats had during their 20 year stretch with Brady is unreal. It's like 17/20 seasons of a top 10 scoring defense or something like that. I highly doubt anything like that has happened in NFL history, at least after the merger.
Watching this and my takeaway is more along the lines of Peyton didn't win more because he didn't do enough in the playoffs... was he bad? no... he wasn't a choker, but he also didn't seem to elevate himself in the playoffs, a great QB can't just be OK and get away without any criticism. Sure he might not have been the #1 reason they lost, but if he only played OK, isn't that a problem if you're a 5 time MVP?
I grew up in Indianapolis, and someone once told me that the Colts defense was so bad that if Peyton had never thrown a single incompletion in his whole career, they might have added one more Super Bowl. In fourteen seasons.
I understand that Peyton is a beloved NFL figure and top QB. But he had shortcomings that the media didn't feel the need to comment on. He didn't try to tackle opponents after throwing an int. He almost never ran the ball, even though he weighed 230 ibs. He refused to run QB sneaks. He refused to attempt to recover fumbles. When confronted with an oncoming rusher, he fell to the ground and assumed the prenatal position. In his 1st playoff game with the Broncos, a game which was played in single digit temps, he quit playing midway through the 4th quarter. In short he was the softest successful NFL QB ever. Surly this had something to do with his post season record.

I haven't watched the video yet but Peyton's biggest downfall was the relentless pass rush of the 3-4 defense. Patriots, Chargers and Steelers just had his number in the playoffs in the 2000s man. I don't remember if LOB was 3-4 or not but the secondary is what made that D even more atrocious.
You know that is an interesting point. I thought when realignment happened the Colts were going to end up in the AFC north with Pittsburgh, Cincy and Cleveland. And of course the Steelers would have been though competition in the division. It would not have been a cakewalk like the south is.

He was a huge improvement to leadership and passing, but to no one's surprise given he replaced Jameis Winston and his 35 turnovers.

It is the easiest time to do it in NFL history and the Bucs shored up the O-line just in time but still it's a testament to how amazing he's kept in shape. It was amazing for any QB to do? Brady had varying success until adding his own tweaks that worked well for him from New England (more safe reads). You said yourself that Winston was on the cusp of a epic season if not for 35 whopping turnovers. You can say it was one of the best seasons we've ever seen, that's quite subjective, but the narrative is one of the best, I can't deny that (the best narratives are sensationalist). You take sports analysts on tv opinions as the opinions of the masses? Rodgers, Mahomes, Watson, Wilson all had very very good years and were in the MVP discussion over Brady (minus Watson because of record) for a good reason. Instead of looking at just the stats on papers and nitpicking between 40 and 43 tds, maybe look at ALL the stats to get a better frame of reference or better yet, WATCH THE GAMES. There are also resources like some people on twitter (Bill Barnwell for example) that will show you the top-down all-22 view for many key plays. Peyton Manning's last season at Denver had no arm, he was already throwing ducks when he broke that TD record, they were just the best ducks anyone has ever seen. His injury and age caught up to him, is that really who you want to compare Tom Brady to? Washed up Manning? Also, I already mentioned many times that was the best part of Brady last season....he was 43 and throwing deep balls. Ultimately, you are using wins and stats that other QBs have compiled in the same season with less talent and little to no favorable play calling in comparison to hype up last year. Not all of his chokes were against Brady. He lost in 2005 to Rothlisberger and the Steelers were a mediocre team that year. He lost to the Jets in 2010 they were no great team although that loss wasn't on him but on their special teams. And lost to Brees and Wilson in the super bowl

Peyton put up 16 points on 12 possessions in his playoff debut while playing in a dome. Brady put up 13 points in 14 possessions in his playoff debut in a snowstorm. Also Brady put up over 300 yards in his playoff debut and went 8 for 8 in overtime of that game. So kinda a weird spin to try and say that Peyton did better in his playoff debut.
We needed Bob sanders for our defiance. He changed the way he played. He was why our defence. With him in our defence went from worst against the run, to the best defence in the playoffs. And the only year he played he was the defensive player of the year. But i believe he was hurt for the game against the chargers in 2007.
I don't know why people keep blaming the defense. When Manning's teams put of 20 points or more in the playoffs, they went 13-2. Manning's overall record is 14-13 which means he didn't put up 20 points in 12 of the 27 games (He went 1-11 in those games). Brady has 11 games out of 45 games in the playoffs in which his team didn't get to 20 points. He's 3-8 in those games. He's 32-3 in games where he put up more than 20 points. Neither of them lost a lot of shootouts in the playoffs. Whenever they put up 21 points or more, Manning lost 2 games and Brady lost 3. The difference is Brady AVERAGED 27.31 points per game in the playoffs and Manning only got to 27 points 6 times in his 27 starts (4 if you don't count the pick 6 in SBXLI and Punt and Kickoff return by Trindon Holliday in the divisional against Baltimore in 2012 season). Manning's average was 22.15 PPG. That is an average of 354 points over the course of a 16 game season. Over the course of Peyton's time in the NFL, only 62 out of the 572 teams had a winning record when they scored less than 354 points in a season (11%). In the 198 playoff games in this 18 year span, 45 of the 198 winning teams scored less than Manning's average of 22.15. In that same span, teams that scored less than 22.15 points went 45-110 (29%). Considering his poor average and the fact that he's put up less than 20 points in 44% of his starts, the defense did just fine to get him to a 14-13 record and 2 super bowl rings with 4 appearances. When a team puts up over 27 points like Brady does, their record is 89-25 (78%). Tom Brady's playoff record is 34-11 (75.5%). So Brady's teams have actually underperformed by 2.5% while Peyton's teams have done better than expected by 22.8%. So really Manning's playoff results are way better than they should have been considering his level of play in the playoffs.

Also, unless every play is a pass attempt (has never happened in a game to date), they don't even have the most impact on every offensive play. If an individual can't even account for half of the result, why should they get credited with the whole thing? We were also debating two particular quarterbacks, Dan Marino and Jim Plunkett. Plunkett is deservingly NOT in the hall of fame, mainly due to throwing 34 more interceptions in his career than touchdowns, but he has two rings compared to Marino's zero. If we are to believe both that rings are the most important determining factor, and that Dan Marino is better than Plunkett; then we're either saying that Plunkett's rings don't mean much or that rings themselves don't mean much. Why would a team accomplishment matter more to one QB than another? Plus, the fact that there have been so many decidedly mediocre QBs winning the super bowl just shows how overrated rings are. Quarterbacks are absolutely the most important position, but not enough to get full credit for something they didn't account for half of.
It seems most people only know or care who QBs and receivers are. They also think the most important position on the field means they are responsible for 90% of the outcome.
He was actually carried to his second super bowl by an amazing defense. He didn't have anything to do with that one... except for his LEADERSHIP. The Broncos won that Super Bowl because Peyton was a shell of who he used to be but still commanded the respect of the team in his old age. But with the Colts, they had the Dan Marino syndrome except Manning was actually a likable guy while Marino was a complete douchebag. The Colts decided to build their entire team around Peyton and just let him figure it all out. They let him act as god on the field, and off, but Super Bowls aren't won that way. They make for 12-14 win seasons with an all-time great, but it takes a lot more than one guy that the buck stops at. Your QB doesn't have to be a god and they asked too much of Peyton. And with his pedigree, he was too willing to accept it. Brady had less talent but won more because he acted more as a stabilizing force throughout his career. With the Colts, it was "ride or die with Peyton" and you simply don't win the championship that way. Peyton was the more modern Dan Marino except with better leadership skills. You could actually truly count on him to make your team a contender year in and year out simply based on his leadership and preparation. And the Colts settled with that and that is a stain on the franchise. It's worth noting that they went from Super Bowl contender to the worst team in the league when he sat out, they got the number one pick in the draft, and dumped Peyton immediately. He went on to lift another franchise and win a Super Bowl while being below average. It was his leadership that built and led that team to the promised land. Something the Colts front office never understood.

But as a younger man Elway was the best in the league and carried garbage teams to the slaughter in the SB 3 times. Montana on those Broncos teams has no rings; Elway on those Niners teams probably had 5 or 6 rings.

And they couldn't even get a good line inn front of Luck and absolutely broke his will to play football.

Watching recievers get blown up on grainy film for 30 minutes really puts in perspective how much the game has changed in 20 years.
I like not having to go "ouch, that's a concussion" three times a game anymore and overall, the players of my favourite sport not getting killed on the field is definitely a plus.
I think we might have overcorrected it a little as far as defensive holding etc... though and I'd like the defenders not having to play with a hand tied behind their back.

Yeah, winning is a team stat, like TDs or yards. Those measure the guard's blocking, the receivers ability to run decoy routes etc. Heck, they even measure the Line Backers ability to stop the opponent so they don't have to force it.

I grew up in Indianapolis, and someone once told me that the Colts defense was so bad that if Peyton had never thrown a single incompletion in his whole career, they might have added one more Super Bowl. In fourteen seasons.
I understand that Peyton is a beloved NFL figure and top QB. But he had shortcomings that the media didn't feel the need to comment on. He didn't try to tackle opponents after throwing an int. He almost never ran the ball, even though he weighed 230 ibs. He refused to run QB sneaks. He refused to attempt to recover fumbles. When confronted with an oncoming rusher, he fell to the ground and assumed the prenatal position. In his 1st playoff game with the Broncos, a game which was played in single digit temps, he quit playing midway through the 4th quarter. In short he was the softest successful NFL QB ever. Surly this had something to do with his post season record.

I haven't watched the video yet but Peyton's biggest downfall was the relentless pass rush of the 3-4 defense. Patriots, Chargers and Steelers just had his number in the playoffs in the 2000s man. I don't remember if LOB was 3-4 or not but the secondary is what made that D even more atrocious.

You know that is an interesting point. I thought when realignment happened the Colts were going to end up in the AFC north with Pittsburgh, Cincy and Cleveland. And of course the Steelers would have been though competition in the division. It would not have been a cakewalk like the south is.

Brady won without Bill...but he had a better chance with the team he went to. It's not like Bruce Arians is a slouch, and there was a dearth of talent, or Brady had to carry any particular part of the football team. They had a ridiculous amount of all-pro and former all-pro talent on offense, their O-line was solidified by season start, and their defense showed up in the playoffs a la Giants d line in 2006-07.
Tom Brady proved he's the best 43 year old QB we've seen in the NFL, but I can see a few QBs taking the Bucs all the way last season. Brady tweaked the offense, he didn't make or change it. He was a huge improvement to leadership and passing, but to no one's surprise given he replaced Jameis Winston and his 35 turnovers.

And I think you're underrating Tom Brady's performance at his age. I've watched a lot of old QBs, and none were as good as Brady at 43 especially with how much he's passed. It is the easiest time to do it in NFL history and the Bucs shored up the O-line just in time but still it's a testament to how amazing he's kept in shape.
It was amazing for any QB to do? That's where I disagree. Yes it's great, but in this day and age, we see those kind of performances all the time, without the type of talent and blocking Brady had too. There are practically 5 QBs last year that had comparable or better performances than Brady. Again, this isn't knocking on Brady. I'm just saying I think you need to pull back the hype a little bit.
In September, the Bucs were top 5 odds to win the SB for many, top 10 for even more - just google it and set the time range.
@@jordancave3089 context is indeed key - Tom Brady is one of the least impacted QBs when it comes to no preseason because of his experience with an amorphous offense in New England. He also went to Bruce Arians, not some coach that tried to force him into an offensive scheme with bootlegs and rollouts. Plenty of QBs have picked up Bruce Arians' offense. Brady had varying success until adding his own tweaks that worked well for him from New England (more safe reads). You said yourself that Winston was on the cusp of a epic season if not for 35 whopping turnovers. You can say it was one of the best seasons we've ever seen, that's quite subjective, but the narrative is one of the best, I can't deny that (the best narratives are sensationalist).
You take sports analysts on tv opinions as the opinions of the masses?
Rodgers, Mahomes, Watson, Wilson all had very very good years and were in the MVP discussion over Brady (minus Watson because of record) for a good reason. Instead of looking at just the stats on papers and nitpicking between 40 and 43 tds, maybe look at ALL the stats to get a better frame of reference or better yet, WATCH THE GAMES. There are also resources like some people on twitter (Bill Barnwell for example) that will show you the top-down all-22 view for many key plays.
Peyton Manning's last season at Denver had no arm, he was already throwing ducks when he broke that TD record, they were just the best ducks anyone has ever seen. His injury and age caught up to him, is that really who you want to compare Tom Brady to? Washed up Manning? Also, I already mentioned many times that was the best part of Brady last season....he was 43 and throwing deep balls. Ultimately, you are using wins and stats that other QBs have compiled in the same season with less talent and little to no favorable play calling in comparison to hype up last year. I already said it was a very very good year for Brady, but it seems we disagree on the reasons why it was standout and I think it comes down to your outlook on the hollywood narrative and my outlook through the on-field performances while paying heed to the performances around him.

In Tampa, Dungy inherited Sapp, Lynch and Brooks, yet couldn't build an offense to get them over the top. In Indy he inherited Manning, Harrison and James, yet the defenses were mediocre. Both teams went to the Super Bowl the year after he left. To me, he's the top reason Manning doesn't have more rings

Not all of his chokes were against Brady. He lost in 2005 to Rothlisberger and the Steelers were a mediocre team that year. He lost to the Jets in 2010 they were no great team although that loss wasn't on him but on their special teams. And lost to Brees and Wilson in the super bowl

Peyton put up 16 points on 12 possessions in his playoff debut while playing in a dome. Brady put up 13 points in 14 possessions in his playoff debut in a snowstorm. Also Brady put up over 300 yards in his playoff debut and went 8 for 8 in overtime of that game. So kinda a weird spin to try and say that Peyton did better in his playoff debut.

We needed Bob sanders for our defiance. He changed the way he played. He was why our defence. With him in our defence went from worst against the run, to the best defence in the playoffs. And the only year he played he was the defensive player of the year. But i believe he was hurt for the game against the chargers in 2007.
I don't know why people keep blaming the defense. When Manning's teams put of 20 points or more in the playoffs, they went 13-2. Manning's overall record is 14-13 which means he didn't put up 20 points in 12 of the 27 games (He went 1-11 in those games). Brady has 11 games out of 45 games in the playoffs in which his team didn't get to 20 points. He's 3-8 in those games. He's 32-3 in games where he put up more than 20 points. Neither of them lost a lot of shootouts in the playoffs. Whenever they put up 21 points or more, Manning lost 2 games and Brady lost 3. The difference is Brady AVERAGED 27.31 points per game in the playoffs and Manning only got to 27 points 6 times in his 27 starts (4 if you don't count the pick 6 in SBXLI and Punt and Kickoff return by Trindon Holliday in the divisional against Baltimore in 2012 season). Manning's average was 22.15 PPG. That is an average of 354 points over the course of a 16 game season. Over the course of Peyton's time in the NFL, only 62 out of the 572 teams had a winning record when they scored less than 354 points in a season (11%). In the 198 playoff games in this 18 year span, 45 of the 198 winning teams scored less than Manning's average of 22.15. In that same span, teams that scored less than 22.15 points went 45-110 (29%). Considering his poor average and the fact that he's put up less than 20 points in 44% of his starts, the defense did just fine to get him to a 14-13 record and 2 super bowl rings with 4 appearances. When a team puts up over 27 points like Brady does, their record is 89-25 (78%). Tom Brady's playoff record is 34-11 (75.5%). So Brady's teams have actually underperformed by 2.5% while Peyton's teams have done better than expected by 22.8%. So really Manning's playoff results are way better than they should have been considering his level of play in the playoffs.

Aw, that comment chain that started with "imagine how many super bowls Peyton would have won if he had Brady's defenses" got deleted. I had just owned some fool on how his "logic" of rings being the most important factor in determining a QBs greatness was wrong. So I'll say it here:
A QB cannot individually be responsible for even 50% of any given result, simply due to defense and special teams existing. Also, unless every play is a pass attempt (has never happened in a game to date), they don't even have the most impact on every offensive play. If an individual can't even account for half of the result, why should they get credited with the whole thing?
We were also debating two particular quarterbacks, Dan Marino and Jim Plunkett. Plunkett is deservingly NOT in the hall of fame, mainly due to throwing 34 more interceptions in his career than touchdowns, but he has two rings compared to Marino's zero. If we are to believe both that rings are the most important determining factor, and that Dan Marino is better than Plunkett; then we're either saying that Plunkett's rings don't mean much or that rings themselves don't mean much. Why would a team accomplishment matter more to one QB than another? Plus, the fact that there have been so many decidedly mediocre QBs winning the super bowl just shows how overrated rings are. Quarterbacks are absolutely the most important position, but not enough to get full credit for something they didn't account for half of.
It seems most people only know or care who QBs and receivers are. They also think the most important position on the field means they are responsible for 90% of the outcome.

He was actually carried to his second super bowl by an amazing defense. He didn't have anything to do with that one... except for his LEADERSHIP. The Broncos won that Super Bowl because Peyton was a shell of who he used to be but still commanded the respect of the team in his old age. But with the Colts, they had the Dan Marino syndrome except Manning was actually a likable guy while Marino was a complete douchebag. The Colts decided to build their entire team around Peyton and just let him figure it all out. They let him act as god on the field, and off, but Super Bowls aren't won that way. They make for 12-14 win seasons with an all-time great, but it takes a lot more than one guy that the buck stops at.
Your QB doesn't have to be a god and they asked too much of Peyton. And with his pedigree, he was too willing to accept it. Brady had less talent but won more because he acted more as a stabilizing force throughout his career. With the Colts, it was "ride or die with Peyton" and you simply don't win the championship that way.
Peyton was the more modern Dan Marino except with better leadership skills. You could actually truly count on him to make your team a contender year in and year out simply based on his leadership and preparation. And the Colts settled with that and that is a stain on the franchise. It's worth noting that they went from Super Bowl contender to the worst team in the league when he sat out, they got the number one pick in the draft, and dumped Peyton immediately. He went on to lift another franchise and win a Super Bowl while being below average. It was his leadership that built and led that team to the promised land. Something the Colts front office never understood.
