You have a gift for taking things that people either make too complex or assume everyone already knows and making it easy to understand. I feel like a lot of people teach music theory, you're really helping teach music practice and application.
I love that you are teaching beginners to play music not just the mechanics of music. I am not a beginner but I think you have good advice for everyone. I’ll be checking into your sessions.
You are the best piano teacher I have seen on TH-cam! You make piano actually easy to understand and even make it enjoyable. You give me hope that I can actually learn and grow. Thank you!!
Because I had an accident a few years ago I lost the use of one of my fingers and one thing I have learnt is find ways that work for you. Okay my frasing off chords are not like everyone else but I have to find what works for me .
Exactly. All musicians, even the greatest, play within their limitations. Django Reinhardt played guitar with only 2 fingers on his left hand; BB King was unable to play and sing at the same time so developed his own particular brand of blues; some well known guitarists are unable to play barre chords so they work around it. The important thing is to enjoy it.
Thanks for the lesson. I really appreciated the way you explain the concepts, English is not my language but when it is spoken in simple terms and slowly, it becomes accessible even to people like me 🙂
I like the 7 rule... where if you are learning a new song, break it up into very small sections and just learn a bit at a time. Aim to get it right 7 times in a row before moving onto the next section. You will progress with learning the song much faster than trying to learn the whole song in one go.
And another tip to go along with this: use something small that you have seven of (like stuffed animals) and move them from one side of the piano to the other after every play through. This helps you keep count without having to remember what number you are on
I understood the most important thing of all thanks to this video: You really love Queen! Joking, the dynamics aspect is absolutely fundamental and i was overlooking it, thank you.
Some people are naturals. I know I am not. I decided not to use apps as needed a one to one tutor and so glad I have that support and encouragement as I may have given up.
Yes, some people are naturals and can pick up music a lot faster than others. But that’s a small minority of people. The majority are not, and in the end, the ones that have the discipline and patience to practice consistently will outperform the ones with “natural” talent that do not.
I’ve been playing piano for 15 years. And just like my guitar, I never learned the notes. I learned the chord shapes on guitar and transpose them for piano without having a clue what notes or chords they are. I just play solely by ear on both. Needless to say, that has seriously cramped my playing on both instruments and am far behind someone who’s actually learned this correctly from the start. I’m unlearning years and years of bad habits. Playing a simple C major scale the correct way is proving to be a lot more difficult for than I thought.
Great realization Mike! Learn your major and minor scales. They will transform the way that you play forever. Also, I am convinced that knowing the notes coupled with the ability to understand what you play by ear/music theory will make you a phenomenal musician both on the piano and guitar.
Use a little less hall on your piano. Makes it sound less cheesy and the difference between with or without sustain pedal is actually more noticeable :)
I was going to subscribe anyway as you’re an amazing teacher but the moment I heard you play black hole sun intro I needed to subscribe❤️❤️ great video! I learnt a lot 😊
Such a great advice and I think some of the things are also applicable to learning in general, for example learning languages, your advice of not trying to memorize so many things and just put into practice and create variations is what has helped me learning languages. Things that a person tries to learn (piano, music in general, languages, etc) are so complex that they're pretty much impossible to master just by memorizing. Going back to learning piano, the advice the "notes only don't make" music is so eye-opening, because many times specially children are taken to piano classes by their parents, they might spend years there just trying to memorize notes and really don't end up learning much. Keep up the good work, this video and your channel are just great!!
Towards the end of your excellent video (about 9 minutes in) you did a fast bluesy example. Would you use the sustain pedal at all as discussed earlier?
Like and subscribe to you!) You have perfect English and its a pleasure to listen what you are talking because I can clearly understand just everything! English is not my native language and sometimes its difficult for me to understand what people speak if they speak too fast or have problems with pronunciation. But this time I had 11 minutes of relax because didn't have necessity to stop video and repeat some of its part and was able to just listen and learn new interesting things about playing the piano. Real thanks to you for that!
I need to know about the gear you use. OK, need might be strong, but I want to know. What model is that wood tone digital piano / keyboard? What is that iPad / tablet mount?
I don't want to be rude, but it seems that you forgot what kind of problems you had when you were a beginner. Your advises: "use the sustain pedal", "use dynamics" is not feasible when the student has problems to read the notes or holding the correct rythm. It is too much to concentrate on. That's why those things are neglected for beginners.
I have been learning piano 5 months and it's difficult reading music and getting all the notes right and for the correct length of time nevermind the pedal. I have just tried it on a new piece this listlessness and omg it tricky
Thank u!!!! Thank God I can slow it down to see what they r DOING….not talking about! I learned much just by watching u slow motion, so thank you! After forty pathetic years trying to get past BLOCK CHORDS by ear is……BEYOND FRUSTRATING….thanks bro. Subscribed ❤
You can't have actually wanted to get past it if it took you 40 years to figure it out. Especially when this isn't the only person on the planet who can slow things down.
He isn't placing them on any keys though. He's placing them in specific keys within a scale. It's basic music theory, not magic. If you learn it, you'll be able to do it too.
great video! I think Im a bit in need of advice. I dont play the piano, or in fact, any instrument, altough I would like to. I have to learn a piano piece for school. In a month. I know its kinda not enough time, but there should be a way, right? Does anybody maybe know where i could atleast get the right notes and everything (cant read sheet music too well tbh)? Im not gonna worry too much about dynamics yet, but it really is a pain rn trying to find which keys to play. Id really appreciate advice, thanks and have a great day :D
@thelma-7777 Thanks for letting me, I think I was watching David's video prior to Milo's, so the comment went to Milo. Off course I know Milo, he's a legend, one of the guy who makes me to continue to play keyboard, learnt a lot from him and always like seeing him, got that winning smile and enthusiasm 😀
As a 22 yr guitarist point of view , having taught 1 person . The emotional aspect is something the player really has to feel themselves, to make it feel alive. Without the tomatoes , your only eating cheese bread buddy..
Good video. I started taking lessons when I was 8 years old, but I've never thrown myself wholly into it. I've gotten really rusty and sloppy and that discourages me, but this video gives me encouragement to take it slow and just do it. Thanks.
This man's giving some real advice really found out abt some of these things while playing keyboard..unfortunately i dont have a touch sensitive keyboard😭
excellent. i agree absolutely. really you're just telling them to play. play. like as with children. not 'play' as with concert pianist. play. with pleasure. for pleasure. for dynamics you should tell them to get an organ. nowadays most of them will have a keyboard instead of a piano anyway: that's got organ with it. but there's hundreds of organs being thrown out nowadays and they need rescuing. beautiful old wooden things, reed organs. help rescue them. tell folks they're good. encourage them to get one. and get your hair cut.
Diminished and augmented chords can be used as passing chords where it transitions between 2 chords:)) they also have many functions to but I don’t know 🤷
Great tutorial thank you. Sounds ok without sustain pedal. So many pianists, who don,t/can,t play legato just use sustain pedal to infill and cover up bad playing. IMHO🤔
What is that classic song called you’re playing at the end. That song that is always on when things get silly in old movies and I’ve never known the name of it
I don't feel this is for beginners. Maybe more like at 1 yr practising 1 hr a day. Can you create a few simple videos that beginners, who are slower than intermediate, to practice and learn.. It's ok to show us your fancy skills bc it gives us beginners something to look forward to, but until then, slower and simpler demonstrations and examples would be very much appreciated. Thanks..
I thought the example of playing the scales with different rhythms and volume was great. You don't even need to know how to read music for that. Too many beginners, myself included, play "monotone". Great reminder to put some emotion to everything we practice
I think you are right this might not be for beginners. I’ve been playing for few years and I considered myself something between beginner and early intermediate and I think this video suits my level. I wouldn’t had known what to do with it few years ago when I was a true beginner. It takes time to master the instrument and sometimes you might be disappointed with the slow results but it’s totally worth it when you start to notice that you can actually play something. 🙂
the most difficult thing for me is to have a plan or roadmap as i litterally dont know where to start and what to learn as there are many things to learn as a beginer
Pick a thing, it doesn't matter which one of the many things, and then do it. You need to learn all of it eventually, there is no right place to start. Apart from, I guess, reading sheet music. You shouldn't really be learning to play without learning to read music. But you do it as you do other things, just reinforcing what you remember from last time by practising it again and again. As long as you're playing and learning, you're doing it.
You have a gift for taking things that people either make too complex or assume everyone already knows and making it easy to understand. I feel like a lot of people teach music theory, you're really helping teach music practice and application.
