Layne is the percussionist/violinist. FYI, Geoff taught Layne to beatbox, but he's made it his own and rocks it. Glad to see you guys listen and love it. Laughed so hard at the brown note comment. 😆😆😆
Laughed so hard when that violin showed up. The combination of shock and joy on your faces was epic! I agree they did the original song justice, and I think it's because they do enjoy it. They are such an incredibly talented group. Geoff did an amazing job of arranging this. WOW!!!
Voiceplay released a video a few days ago showing each of them arranging part of a song in each of their homes. It's really really good. Voiceplay Loop 1
It was like a roller coaster it would take you up and then either stop or drop. Like waves in the ocean 🌊 just rolling over each other building the tide up.
Hi my friends voice play are absolutely amazing and have done so many great songs a young gentleman taking TH-cam by storm is ren -hi ren this video has had 3 million views in 2 weeks and it is pure genius worth a look many thanks love and respect from the UK 👍👍👍👍👍👍🌟😀😀 amazing channel 👍
It's always fun to watch the two of you get blown away by Voiceplay! The only other appearance by VioLayne is in their cover of Warriors by Imagine Dragons. J None also played violin in that one! Layne was not beatboxing at the same time, because it did not look good on camera, they tried it.
Ever since The Dragonborn Comes I just call him Dragon breath Geoff. 🐉Also maybe Hades because he seems to summon the low notes from the depths of Hell 🎶 🎻🔥🔥💜🤯 Loved your reaction thanks guys🥰
I couldn't see how they could make 'Dream On' A Cappella, never mind this, but they nailed it! Geoff's talent for arranging is genius! Even with their different timbres and styles of singing, they all blend so well together. I loved Geoffs bass notes running up and down a couple of octaves and of course the numerous E1 subs he dropped. Then you add the surprise feature of 'vioLayne', and this cover becomes epic perfection! Love your reactions guys, thanks for another enjoyable one! 🙂👍
Completely off topic to the reaction, but the video opens with Chris talking about having to replace broken spark plugs from the Triton 3V engine, and I had to do the exact same job on our Expedition a few years back. An absolutely horrendous job that took three days to get done. I know the pain! 😆 I am absolutely in love with this cover of this song. I enjoyed the reaction, very informative.
Great reaction. Always great discussion and insight. Don't know why you guys don't have more subscribers. Leaving this so the algorithm might send more people your way!
Thank you. I was sure you would like it. All of the guys are SO talented, and Geoff’s arrangement was perfection. (It almost didn’t have that last solo, since Geoff hadn’t figured out what to do with it. But Layne to the rescue!)
Love your reaction. The performance becomes even more outstanding when we remember Voiceplay members do most of the work: composition, production, lighting, backdrop, etc. Unlike other groups. It is all them No label influence
Layne is going as VioLayne these days. Geoff knew Metallica had a guitar solo so he wrote it out for Layne. At the last moment he wanted Layne to do the violin and it was perfect. Glad you loved this.
I think one of my favorite alterations for this song, and I'm not sure if this is a composition choice because of the genre and style they're converting to in their cover or an artistic choice and purely for entertainment value, is the choice where the band builds and builds and builds and in Metallica would be a huge wall of sound with the electric guitar and vocals in VoicePlay suddenly quiets to a bare minimum. Not every time but you catch quite a few times. I thought that was a really interesting choice. The violin at the end has a much more original take that a guitar took in the original. But, it's like a growler covering a verse to a pop song it might not always be pleasing to everyone but the way they approached it was so unique and definitely NOT boring (the one thing Metallica said don't do was "Don't make it boring" lol).
Welcome to the rabbit hole…I spent a whole weekend on You Tube when I first discovered them. 😊 You’ll see changes in personal - they are currently running with 4 full timers and a guest for every cover until they find their new fifth. They had five, but two left during pandemic. One just quit music, the other (who is guesting here!) is now in the Navy. So. Yeah. It’s confusing when the faces change up.
I was waiting for you guys to react to this one. VioLayne is amazing! If you look in the description box it tells you who does what including the arrangement and stuff. Layne played classical violin for 11 years. They actually refer to Layne as VioLayne in the description. Voiceplay is just amazing!
The deep booms could either be Geoff or Layne. They do layer their music, so it is not live. VioLayne does the beatboxing during the violin playing on a separate track.
Keep your eyes and ears open for the Chicago and Friends concert done Nov 17-18. I have heard that it will be available in February. Chicago heard VoicePlay's Nothing Else Matters and was invited to be on stage with Chicago, doing some of their songs. Huldra Draco went to the concert and brought back a phone video of a couple of the songs. The trumpet player was sitting next to Geoff just listening with that expression on his face - How are you doing that? Oh- and VP dropped a new one The Lion Sleeps Tonight. It started as a mini but Layne and the guys were having so much fun that it morphed into a regular run but done in the mini format. It isn't Nothing Else Matters, but it is a truly feel good video.
This is Geoff's arrangement and he does like his bass notes. He gets down to E1 in this one. Another new name for Geoff? I've heard Bassmaster 3000, Mr Bass-alicious, G1 Geoff, and :the living legend that is Geoff Castellucci, so ok, what's one more.... :) You need to see their Warriors for violins, Layne and J.None on that one. Geoff's arrangements always blow me away.
Love and Hugs Guys !!! Can't wait to watch this one. Matt you did not disappoint *chuckle I am now waiting on the edge of my chair ... the Lyaneoline AND There It Is !!!! LOLOL
6:20 I love this whole part of the conversation, I mean Geoff has been doing Subs, Growl, and Chest Fry for many years now, and he is a natural bass who can go way down with his chest voice. He is working with better equipment than most of us so I am sure this is much easier for him than for me, an untrained low baritone who's only been practicing these techniques for about a year and only recently gained enough clarity to be able to differentiate between which technique I am using. It took me this long to figure out how it feels to sing in chest vs a growl, subharmonic, or chest fry (I try not to mess with beatbox bass techniques unless I am beatboxing, they don't usually sound good in a singing context and I suck at inhale, so I mainly use those three.) Using extended techniques in music, whether its a bass singing technique, a beatbox technique, polyphonic singing, whistle notes, etc is always so impressive to me because its so hard to get right. Even Geoff has admitted that sometimes its a coin toss as to whether he hits a subharmonic the way he wants it or no, for me I may go for a sub and just end up making some unsupported weird low sound because I tried too hard and didn't relax into it.
You guys and Peter Barber both came up on my list today... So glad! I've been waiting. Such an amazing track. It doesn't get old. Love from Newfoundland 🍁
Loved that reaction! Warriors by imagine dragons is the only other song where they use a violin and it’s incredible. I’d love to see you guys react to that one too I think you’d really get a kick out of it.
Thank you, for reacting to this. Metallica made this so great, but was not releaced til 1991 on their Black album. ( why they are in all Black, exept the little white on Eli's shooes... ( And yes I am that old...) Still love the original one, but Voiceplays version OMG its awsome times a million.
Awesome reaction to an amazingly awesome song. VioLayne does that same reaction to everyone. I can't get enough of listening to this. Even when I lay down to rest or sleep I put this on loop, out on my headphones, lay down and press play. Several hours later I finally turn it off.
What in my mind makes Voiceplay the best around is they can do anything and everything. Yes they can do theater, and they can do arrangements that are so challenging and very intellectual. They are just so very talented and I wish nothing but the best for them.
And it's a Geoff arrangement, so the sub-basement volcano notes are certain to feature. I'm not a fan of metal (sorry, classical musician from a young age), but this had me going straight to watch Metallica's video. Such an amazing arrangement (even in the same key).
@@Robert.Sheard to me it sounds like Cesar, but people with better training than I have say it’s Eli and that you can hear Caesar as a background. I can listen to the karaoke track but I can’t tell where they are in the song sometimes because I just don’t have the training but popular opinion is that it’s Eli.
Great reaction, guys! We’ve all spent some time trying to figure out whether that “boom” sound is Geoff or Layne-I don’t know if anyone has figured it out or been told. That “growr” in the middle of the violin solo, too, could be either of them. It sounds like one of Layne’s noises to me but Geoff is fully capable. This arrangement is one of Geoff’s best as well. These guys somehow manage to surprise us every new song they turn out.
Thanks for the reaction! Voiceplay is never missing! This song is very special to me. He's been with me since I was a teenager. That's pretty much the only song that really touches me emotionally. Voiceplay managed to make one of my favorite songs even more beautiful. I don't know how they do it, but they keep getting better and better with every release. You guys reacted exactly how I expected 🤣🤪 like you said: it's hard to react. Thanks again for that
Their outfits are a nod to the album this song is from, aka Metallica's 'Black Album'. Same with the background. Black on Black, just like the album cover. Mind you they needed some lights for the video, but they did it very well overall. I'm surprised none of the reactors I've seen have picked up on that yet.
VioLayne!!! I'm going to be interested to see if you remember his name next time. lol Great reaction, been watching for your to drop. So glad y'all were able to get to it as fast as you did. I do feel t his is Geoff's best arrangement. It's just perfect. Thanks guys!! ( and yes, I'm subscribed. Have been since your reaction to Carry On Wayward Son, which I still will pull up every so often and watch. ; )
You don’t know how spot on you are calling Geoff Thor…….wait until you see their new video for Valhalla Calling. You think you’re prepared for anything he can throw at you, and then he hits you and you’re like WTF WAS THAT!?!?!?! I can see you rewinding a certain part near the beginning back and re-listening like at least 3 times.
Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to continue to do this despite your busy work schedules. I'm sure it's hard sometime but I know at least in my case I look forward to seeing you guys put out new stuff. As I've said before you don't seem like TH-cam Stars you seem like two guys that I can hang out with and feel comfortable doing so. Keep up the great work.
Hey, thanks so much, John! Comments like that keep us going! And we appreciate it, we’re not out here trying to be anything we’re not! Just a couple dudes hangin out, discussing some videos! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I was never into heavy metal much either, but I am very familiar with this one, and a few others that are slower songs like this one. This was a phenomenal cover! I love the build into the second half of the song. They really did this way beyond my expectations. It’s brilliant! Eli brought out his inner metal rock persona in this! Loved his lead! Everyone was spectacular. Especially loved your reaction when the violin came out and they all gave it all they had and then some!
I had the same question when I heard it.... Geoff's parts are clearly his, but the lowest beat sounded different to me. Like the low reverb drum effect in dragonborn comes...I understand that Layne does that with some low sound and then hitting the mic on his throat. You are the first reactors I have seen who caught that here.
Dude, I've always said if Bruce Dickinson is the air raid siren! Then Jeff is the fog horn. It's funny you should say the same. But I also agree that this is a little different. Thor god of thunder, I like the sound of that
At 8:55 you start talking about that “bass drum” and who it was? Geoff. It was Geoff. I’d lay my life on it. Layne was singing a higher harmony line throughout that early part. Their behind the scenes videos are patreon only - sorry guys. 😊 Gotta join up to see that. But I can tell you one secret from it (which was downright hysterical to watch): Layne never did catch that violin and bow. He fumbled it time after time. They gave up. What you saw was video of him throwing the violin and bow that they reversed. Sneaky buggers. 😁
And of course Home Free just released the video for the title song for their new album too. Also great, but very much different. Guess who also added an instrument to the song?
I was really hoping you guys would react to this, and it did not disappoint! This arrangement.... Geoff has been on a roll lately, but this one is something special. Kind of hope the guys in Metallica get to listen to it; I suspect they'd be impressed.
That whoa sound that you heard they also used in Enemy. I think it’s Layne, but he and Geoff have a fair amount of overlap when it comes to percussion. I have heard that Layne can do inhaled or ingressive phonation. If you say the word wow while you’re inhaling, you get something very similar and I think that’s what they are referring to. Matt said something about the person producing it. If you’re talking about the mixing, it is done by Ed Boyle, who also does the mixing for Pentatonix and Home Free.
That makes a TON of sense on the mixer/producer! It’s mind blowing that either of them can achieve stuff like that, all goes to show, practice makes perfect! Thanks for watching with us, Janet!
An a cappella group could never sing Metalli........never mind. VoicePlay. Damn these guys are going to kill me. They are so underrated! If you really want to hear the background subtlety then download the karaoke track. You catch so much more that way than you do even with great headphones. I love Eli's lower range too, but he really nailed the high belts here. Geoff said he did it all to himself and it wasn't written that high.
Great reaction guys! If yall want to check out something different, there is a guy called Ren. The song 'Hi Ren' will knock you sideways for a minute, a few times. Would love to see your take on this song.
New to the channel, but the guy on the left ruined the violin surprise for the other dude (and anyone else that didn't know). Really like your reaction, except for the spoiler ;)

That shaking moment of which you spoke (18:26) was Geoff's voice hitting a low note - I called it "Geoff's burp!" LOL
It was like a roller coaster it would take you up and then either stop or drop.
Like waves in the ocean 🌊 just rolling over each other building the tide up.
They are full-on entertainers., not only "theater kids". They can sing anything, in any genre. They can dance.... well....some and they can act.
You knew something was getting ready to go down when Eli adjusted his jacket!!!!!!!
Welcome to #VIOLAYNE! The icing on the cake. Thank you Geoff for this amazing arrangement.
VioLayne rocked this!
Great reaction!!! Thank you very much.
Thank YOU for watching with us!
Let's go yes yes yes 🙌

@@307Reacts My pleasure. VoicePlay did the staging as the Black Album, with the black staging, black clothing and black violin.
HAHAHAHA Thor Geoff, thats awesome
Love it. You know it’s good when Chris gets his stank face out. Lol
Haha we both definitely got stuck in this one!
I would ♥ to hear Geoff do a voiceover for a dragon ^_^
I think one of my favorite alterations for this song, and I'm not sure if this is a composition choice because of the genre and style they're converting to in their cover or an artistic choice and purely for entertainment value, is the choice where the band builds and builds and builds and in Metallica would be a huge wall of sound with the electric guitar and vocals in VoicePlay suddenly quiets to a bare minimum. But thanks to react to this cover
I have been waiting all week for this!!! ❤❤
I actually watched the whole video 3 times over lmao😂

You are as funny as you are amazed every time 😄👍
But you have to be better prepared so that you can feed each name. 🤣🤣💋
I still have hope 👍
Another great reaction, thanks guys! 2023, 50k let's gooo!
Thanks guys! Your reaction was awesome, and my favorite. Loved how you raised your arms when Layne had the violin tossed to him.
Haha couldn’t help it! Totally visceral reaction! This was amazing, thanks for watching with us, Dawnelle!
Layne !!!! *chuckle
I was so much waiting for this reaction.. i was NOT disappointed :D
Hi guys glad to see you both!
Hi Tris, thanks for being here!
Love it when all the reactors lose it.....awesome cover!
Layne had 12-13 years classical violin training. It's even more utilized in Warriors... he kills it!
It could be Layne tapping a mic. He did that effect in Oogie Boogie.

Lowest note was a GOD DAMNED G0. Think The one before they started singing was an A1 and the one at the end of his part was the G0.

From what I've seen in other comments it was Layne and his beat box genius
@@tinaprice848 Yes. That same sound comes up in their cover of "Enemy", and I'm 98% sure it was Layne then, too.
@@CapriUni Yes! It's the same sound as in Enemy, which I fully believe was a Layne inhale note.
ooh also the same similar sound in their Stranger Things theme short. You can actually see in that video that it's Layne that makes the sound.

Loved seeing you react to this. VoicePlay is just incredible and their depth and breadth of talent is mind boggling
Big facts! Thanks for watching!
layne does that same sound effect in their cover of enemy
I believe Voice Play does their own mixing but sends it off to Ed Boyle for the final mixing.
I also use flat headphones to hear it in the cleanest way possible and I imploded with this version!
Nice!! Their producer/mixer definitely has some experience behind the board! This mix was nuts!
You know Lane is the Beat Boxer as well dont you ?
You should react to Geoff Castellucci's new video The Sound of Silence. Epic!
I’ve gathered that it’s Layne, the percussionist who does that low ’boom’. I guess both he and Geoff are capable of it though.
Mind blowing in either regard! 🤯
@@307Reacts Yes, it is! 😁
