Someone (don't know who) told Chicago about this version of Nothing Else Matters. After listening, they contacted VoicePlay and invited them to join them onstage for their Chicago and Friends in Nov for 2 days. They got to do about 6 songs themselves and some others with Chicago. The day Chicago was setting up the stage the stage manager asked where the drum kit should go. Eli pointed to Layne and said "He's it!" The trumpeter was sitting next to Geoff trying to figure out how he did that bass.
I wondered how the hell VP could do 'Dream On' A Cappella style and they nailed it. I vowed never to question 'how' again, though seeing the words VoicePlay & Metallica in the same sentence I couldn't help be just a little sceptical! Layne plays violin through most of Warriors, and it's jaw dropping. Layne is stunning on the violin. Almost 3 years we waited to get another taste... J also plays violin in Warriors, just not as much. Technically not acapella, but all I care is that its gorgeous. Layne is a triple threat here: vocals, beatbox and violin, and top flight in all of them.
T Voice Play has definitely changed the rules for a capella & for the better. Now Pentatonix has caught on & decided they would have the bass singer play the cello. NEXT ? Lol

I have had this song on repeat since it was released on Patreon. Nobody tells Voiceplay they can't do something. And then the return of J. None and VioLayne!
Tony wanted to work behind the scenes. That's one of the reasons they bought Pattycake Productions in 2016. Tony and Layne make alot of awesome videos. Start to finish. Geoff taught Layne how to beatbox. Layne increased his skills over the years. He was their baritone in the beginning.

VoicePlay did Warriors 3 yrs ago and both Layne full time and J None did a few lines on his violin. Layne did the beatboxing at the same time but he said that the differences between beatboxing and the violin was hard on his mind. When Geoff wrote the guitar solo for Layne and then asked if he could do it on the violin instead, Layne said he would be more comfortable beatboxing separately. Warriors is an Imagine Dragons cover and it is superb. Layne made us wait for 3 yrs before we got to hear him again.

Not an electric and what he uses in the video is not the one he recorded with. He didn't risk his violin being tossed around.
As for the screams right before the violin kicks in, all 3 are screaming, but it's Eli on the highest note. Layne plays his own proper violin in the recording of the audio, the violin used in this video is just a "cool" looking prop they use for the videos.

Really, really stunning piece. Definitely one of their best, if not THE best so far-but I seem to say that a lot with these guys. All I know is I’ve had it on repeat now since it came out. You liked the high note here, you’ll love where they go in that one. Layne can beatbox and play violin at the same time, it just didn’t look as good. They all play at least some piano. Geoff can also play guitar. I have had the pleasure of seeing them live, that’s when I signed up as a Patreon. I sat in my car and signed up on my phone before I started the car.

I believe it’s Cesar doing the high note just like he did in their Dream On cover but I could be wrong, only speculation. Also, the way he looks in the video makes me feel as though he’s going higher.
From Geoff during his solo, that was a subharmonic octave drop from E2 to E1. And, doing an octave drop with subharmonics is extremely difficult to get right. Normally, subharmonics are done in 5ths but can be done in a full octave, too... it's just more difficult to pull off.
Loved your reaction. Where you said Geoff went from chest voice to vocal fry, that is not vocal fry but that is a subharmonic note. I think every time you think it's a vocal fry it is actually a subharmonic note. Geoff has a video on his youtube channel where he explanes how the subharmonic register works if you are interested in that.

it would be extremely difficult to play a violin properly and beatbox at the same time since you need your breathing to be able to play... Also, the position and placement of the violin would make it hard to beatbox, so my guess is either Geoff took over the beatbox or the beatboxing was layered over the violin part post production.

Layne tried beatboxing while playing the violin in this one, but it did not look good. They are performing to a prerecorded track, so you still hear the beatboxing. I think that unexpected weird sound was Layne, there was something similar in their cover of In the Hall of the Mountain King. Great reaction!!

That 'Bass drop' you mentioned, sounds like what they did in their cover of Skyrim.....maybe Layne, maybe studio effect....hard to tell.....>^^

Layne tried beatboxing while playing the violin in this one, but it did not look good. They are performing to a prerecorded track, so you still hear the beatboxing. I think that unexpected weird sound was Layne, there was something similar in their cover of In the Hall of the Mountain King.
