I was 17 years old when this song came out, and although I liked it a lot, it was just a song. Five years later, I experienced the exact lyrics after losing the love of my life to another man with only myself to blame. The song hit every emotion I felt, as if I had written it myself. Today, I am 62 years old and still get a lump in my throat when I hear it.
Funny I had the same thing happen to me, the only difference I was in my twenties at the time, We both married others and raised our families only to both divorce years later. I then had a chance to rekindle the relationship but decided not to just figuring things would not to be. now we'll never know. Bittersweet.
Same here. The song perfectly encapsulates my feelings toward my college girlfriend that I felt would have made my perfect mate if not for my stupidity. Also, I'm from the same hometown as Paul Davis and remember him giving a free concert in our high school gym while I was in high school, though I don't know if he sang this song. I believe he wrote it later in his career.
I was on a plane to my first USAF duty station back in '78 when this song came on the entertainment system. Made me think about the girl I left behind as we were banking through the clouds. I can still picture it... (Fast forward...We just celebrated our 22nd Anniversary!!)
Yet another Mississippi musician. Paul was from Meridian, MS. He died in his hometown on April 22, 2008, one day after his 60th birthday! Great singer/songwriter!
My wife is from Meridian and I grew up 23 miles south in Quitman. I also worked in radio there in the Mid 80's, played his songs and worked with friends of Paul. He was a wonderful person and great artist and is surely missed.
This bittersweet cut is at the top of my list of these kind of soft rock songs. If as an adult this song hasn't happened to you then you haven't live long enough.

this was the first song i ever danced to with my neighbor, i was 8 she was 10.. first girl i kissed, first girl to play doctor with me.. we were great friends.. years later we still talk on fb.. i sent her this song a year ago, i did not expect her to cry when i did
My Dad managed a band in Paul's hometown Meridian MS.he would come over and jam i was like 7. I knew good music lol. The Bass Player in the ban Chris Etheridge was a founding member of The Flying Burrito Brothers. One of the early Country Roxk bands
This song, " I go crazy" was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 40 weeks and peaked at #1. Everyone loves when an old lover looks in your eyes and they still go crazy! Paul was hot. He was only in his 20's here. The long blonde hair is sexy on him, and the facial hair, moustache and beard are gorgeously masculine. He was somewhat shy and stayed out of the limelight. Their are not that many videos of this man playing this song, either. He could play any of the instruments in his band, very talented that way. He didn't tour much. He had filled our radiowaves with romantic magic and we ate it up back then. I love a lot of different music, but this song is so beautiful, it can reignite an old flame. His other hit 'Cool Night" will also set lover's hearts on fire! Yes I am in love with a dead man. I think I can be forgiven. Thanks for reviewing one of the great masters of love songs!
@@terry21651 - I had heard Paul Davis talk about how much he preferred fishing and just being at home doing things he enjoyed and being out in the woods having fun with his friends. According to one of his closest friends, musician and songwriter Paul Davis was more comfortable at home in Meridian than he was in the spotlight shone upon him as a result of his many hits, said Art Matthews, a past owner of a local radio station, who was friends with Davis for more than 33 years. "He didn't set out to be famous and he didn't relish traveling and touring," said Matthews. "He was very much a homebody. A nocturnal person who enjoyed people and his music. He was every bit as normal as everyone else whose talent happened to be associated with a high profile industry." I had never heard that he did not fly, but I will continue to look for the source of that. If you have that source, I would appreciate letting me know where that video clip is located. Thank you for your input. I know when he was shot in the stomach during a mugging, his health went downhill. It's so sad that they doctors could not save him when he had the heart attack that took his life. Thanks for your reply and the information on Paul Davis! His music and his legacy will live on! 💜💥🎼
"Ok, I was not expecting that, when you look at him...." 😂I thought the same thing, this song played over the intercom at work and Shazam'd it, certainly didn't expect that voice and those lyrics out of a dude looking like that.
There was this wonderful time in the 70’s , they called the singer/songwriter. It was a brief moment where it didn’t matter if you were good looking or cool or marketable. If you could write a good song, you could sing it yourself. Jim Croce, Harry Chapin,Leon Russell,Carole King,Gordon Lightfoot… too many to name. But def worth checking some of them out
The surprise that even after a time of separation when one might have thought they have "moved on" only to find the sad truth....that those feelings never really went away....and the old familiar ache wells up inside....that the truth is.... those feelings are still there and real...and here again
Hello Angela: Ah, the bittersweet lament of lost but never forgotten love. Who among us does not have a yearning for a former lover who still resides in the best part of our memory? Paul Davis can really deliver on these kinds of songs...and yes, he wrote and composed this. I loved the introduction where the host referred to him as "...looking like an Allman brother." That was a priceless observation. Thank you for reacting to this, and for that lovely smile!👍👍❤❤

Just found you today, and you're beautiful and awesome!! LOVE that a younger person can react and breathe to life her deepest feelings and emotions to each song! My first girlfriend played this song to me over the phone after we had broke up...over 45 years ago! We both have moved on in life and live in the same town, and I bump into her from time to time, and we are still good friends. Each time I hear this song I think of her, and maybe what could have been, though we are both happily married..I do still go crazy.....
Yes there is that someone who leaves an indelible mark that you will take to your last days, yet there is still that joy that they brought you when you envision them
One of my favorites of all time and brings back that pain of loss we all experience when we separate from someone we came to love in our younger years or even that ex we spent 25 years with and ended up in a nasty divorce. A real tear jerker that touches the soul every time I hear it.

Angela, I know I tell you all the time, but you are one beautiful, wonderful, precious, and compassionate human being, in oh so MANY ways !!! I did and I have some who really likes and loves me. I hope evey one has that. Memories hurt but you get stronger with time. Your such a good soul, thank you.
When I hear this song, it takes me right back to 1978. There was a girl that worked at the Fotomat booth where I took my film to get developed. I really liked her a lot. I would stop by just to talk to her, and I even took a couple of pictures of her. I never went out with her because she had a boyfriend, but I really had it bad for her. Every time this song is played, it's 1978 again. Beautiful memories.
