David Gilmour is a genius not only for what he plays but also what he doesn’t play. He puts so much air and space into his music. It’s a beautiful thing to hear.
He's not flashy, but he simply plays all the right notes in all the right places and as you noted, knows when to let silence speak.
David Gilmour plays the guitar with more emotion by not touching the strings than most guitarists when they're fretting the strings and playing notes.
As the saying goes... (at least in my circles) It's easy to play Pink Floyd.... it's difficult to play Pink Floyd welll...
He knows how to make what he's playing breathe.
He creates anticipation
Pop stars are all about their image. David is about the music

Each time when David Gilmour plays guitar is telling us a story, his guitar tells us to join the perfect emotion at each time.
Another suggestion for you is "Echoes" from the Gdansk concert, it was Rick Wrights last perfomance of Echoes ... absolutely genius performance ...
Both of you are 1000% correct. There's Gilmour then there's everyone else. Love to watch more Pink Floyd fans start their journey. You two make a nice couple.
I feel lucky having loved PF for more than 50 years now and seeing young people reactions. This music is a gift for our lives.

There are a lot of fabulous guitar players but none of them can touch your soul like this man. He's always been my favorite guitar player.
David Gilmore can make a guitar talk, cry, whisper, shout, plead, and console. He is not the fastest, the loudest or the most technically proficient, but he can evoke emotions with his playing like no other.
They write a story and then interpret the feeling of the story with music, the intensity, and the passion of what they are saying. This is why music moves us.
I recommend listening to the studio version and watching the video, it's impressive and moving
David Gilmour's guitars can talk, cry and laugh. For me he is still the greatest guitarist in the music world. I wish you both a lot of fun with his music. 👍

David Gilmour’s guitar tone is unmatched. This song a prime example. Makes it sing.
What a beautiful and touching reaction. It is so uplifting to see someone discover the genius of this band for the first time and be so honestly affected by it. I have been listening to them since 1967. I was lucky to see them for my very first concert. I have seen them play live seven times. This band and very few others managed to bridge the gap between cultures. Profoundly affecting people from Europe, America, Asia, Australasia, South America and Africa. The passion shows through.

All great guitarists will tell you, it is all in the meat of the fingers. All the nuances come from the touch of the fingers and the muscle/skin/and bone in the touch.

FYI: when the band was recording this at Abbey Road Studio . A person came in and stood there watching then record the "wish you were here" album. No one recognized it was Sid , they hadn't seen him in yrs. . some cried. can't wait for you to here Dave is a person will have friends play with same concert David Bowie. A street music in Italy on the street invited to play wine glass in a song that recorded that way
You asked, is it him or is it a special guitar ? Well, Bob Ezrin, The Wall album producer, famously said:" David has the best hands in the business. You can give David a ukulele and he can make it sound and sing like a Stradivarius". nuff said.

I have been listening to Pink Floyd for over 50 years and I still can't explain David's guitar playing either. But with time I learned to stop trying to explain it, but instead just sit back and enjoy it and where he takes me. Just absolutely beautiful music!! So glad to see you both enjoying it so much. I listen to these guys every day!!

I, too, saw them in '94.
It was and is the most incredible concert of my life.
That said, I have seen Brit Floyd 4 times now, and they are a STELLAR cover band.
If they're in your town, it's as close as you can now get to the real deal, and I highly recommend them.

The drone notes of the synthesizer is what makes the vibe most of the time, during these long guitar sessions. That, coupled with some moments of silene - which become more powerful because the sound is so otherwise full - and you get something very special.
My first time seeing this performance. While studio versions are always best, when it comes to Pink Floyd, there is not much of a letdown. This performance surprised me. It shouldn't have, but it did. The vocals stood out. The sax playing was superb. I appreciate y'all's reactions. Dominika's emotional immersion into Floyd's music is completely understandable, and doesn't come off as fake or over reacting. I remember listening to Pink Floyd's albums back when they were first released and being blown away as a pre- to young teen. Listening with headphones was transporting. This album is fabulous. It has a heavy undertone to it for obvious reasons, but it sounds incredible. My Saturday nights were sometimes spent alone in my bedroom, laying back on the bed with Bose headphones on, listening to one entire album after another.
A Pink Floyd album was usually one of my choices, especially as I got older and more PF albums were released.
Occasionally an entire Saturday was taken up with this practice.
Got away from the partying lifestyle.

He honestly could have called this "Pink Floyd" if he wanted to. This performance has original PF keyboardist Richard Wright, the amazing Dick Parry who played sax on Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Here, as well as Guy Pratt who replaced Roger Waters when he left the band in the 80s. I can't tell if John Carin is also there on keyboards or not, but either way, this is essentially later day Pink Floyd without Nick on the drums. But whatever, it's amazing and Crosby and Nash were a nice touch on this.
Davis said in an interview that this guitar gifted him this song. This is my favorite guitar.
Syd Barrett did not die in the sixties. He had a mental breakdown in the '60s and was replaced by David Gilmour. He became a recluse. Syd died in 2006 at the age of 60. The same year as this concert.

I love David Gilmour, extraordinary guitarist (among the best ever for me), but I don't forget Roger Water (visionary and absolute genius always in my opinion), he wrote most of Pink Floyd's lyrics, as well as composing the music together with David Gilmour, Rick Wright and Nick Mason

This performance was amazing! Love that you two let your feelings show during your true, authentic reactions. If you haven’t heard the full, original album version of this song, you definitely should! This is my second favorite song of theirs, first being Wish You Were Here, more for nostalgic reasons. David is a artist who paints pictures with sound, very few guitarists if any can do what he does IMHO.

I do agree with some of the other commenters that the studio version is probably the best rendition so please do yourselves a favor and listen to it alone sometime. I recommended this because I believe it shows David at work in his prime live. Plucking every note perfectly. He is a very gifted person. I was concerned that Dominika was going to a sad place there for a minute, but then David superhero and his band of musicians came through to save the day.
Hi. Enjoy your reactions. To me they are genuine emotions you display as opposed to the faux reactions on a lot of these sites. Can't believe someone has not suggested "On the turning away" from the first live album "A delicate sound of thunder". For my money, it contains the best Gilmour solo this side of Comfortably numb. The song will have you both in tears as the alruistic nature of the lyrics become clear, combined with the melody and stellar musicionship from the band. Enjoy.

This song, this experience is one of my favorites. You are right in thinking that you will undoubtedly hear this many more times in your life, and there are lots of great renditions of it, live, studio, with guest singers. Take them all in, it's an experience you won't ever forget.

David’s guitar skills are sublime, and like Santana’s, a continuation of the B B King style of blues playing via the great Peter Green who created the famous blues rock band named Fleetwood Mac who inturn became a famous POP band after Peter left them to live in mental institutions and rehab facilities.
I’m sure other guitarists played like BB King before he did, but BB is the first one we know about....... playing slowly, with each note given its own tone and life span, and then using deliberate gaps to create better music....... the gaps become emotional notes of their own, using silence to build expectation.

Just magical. I think we should recognise the genius compositions of these performances. Pink Floyd is fairly unique in the way they usually perform a song, of course aided by wonderful instrumentalists. Begin with a building musical journey, then launch into verse and chorus, then finish with a long instrumental crescendo, with periods of harmonious backing vocals. Sucks me in every single time.

Back in the 1980s, where I am from,(Buffalo, NY) they used to have "headphones only". It played Pink Floyd which is the Best way to listen to Floyd. Also another is The Greatful Dead best listened to over headphones.
Those two guys were David Crosby and Graham Nash from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Another wicked band from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. Not the same as Floyd but pretty amazing. In their own right

This for your information - In the meantime David Gilmour had joined the band. This became a long story of love and envy between Roger W. and David G. Time will judge, but at least David does not express this anxiety and fear that haunting RW. In the end, their heritage will last forever.

I'd like to point out that this song (like all the songs by Pink Floyd in that era) has born from an idea of Roger Waters who wrote the lyrics as well. This doesn't take any credit away from David Gilmour who's one of the greatest musical geniuses out there and my favourite guitar player. My point is that Pink Floyd's music is the result of that mix of musicians and not solely of Gilmour.

Here is what I suggest going foreword as i hope you do with Pink Floyd and that is to considder listening to their albums in order from Oldest to Newest. I say this becasue in my opinion most if not all of their albums are based on a theme. The flow of one song to another is really impactfull so it is important to listen to the albums in full.
I make this comment not after this video but when I watched your reaction to "Another brick in the Wall" video (That was a clip from the movie made about the album "PINK FLOYD THE WALL") The Movie is well worth a watch AFTER you listen to the full album.
Another thing for me that makes Pink Floyd different or in its own way Iconic for many people is that the feeling people get from their music. As you have stated in not so many words that you were lost or have no words about a song, do not feel bad but that is what most people feel. The long intros and profetic Lyrics along with hypnitic skill and musicionship by all members of the band put us all in some ways uneasy place and dig deep into an individuals immagination and most people thing of a different place so no wrong answers. Go with what you feel.
I think for me rather than looking at newer music it may be better to dive deep into 60's and 70's music to see the changes or differences from todays music.
The last thing I have to say is to stay away from MTV or any Music Videos from that erra as they are not presented as the songs should be. They take away from the Music and the artists as a whole and I think just avoid any Official Music Video. Stick to live performances and Actual Albums from artists. As well is also good to know and tell about the Artist in Question (so research just abit before you do your reaction). If its a Band like Pink Floyd when did they form and or when did they break up, names of the members of the Band and what instruments they played. If a specific song who wrote the song are just three categories that will help you know the artist and have more information to talk about in your videos.

This may be Pink Floyd’s best song (and that’s saying something). Musically and lyrically brilliant combined with the emotional tribute to the band’s former leader Syd hence [S]hine on [Y]ou Crazy [D]iamond.

If you are talking about David Gilmour's great guitar playing - I have to agree with you. It's interesting that you say all guitarists should learn from Gilmour. But what David Gilmour says is more interesting: in one interview someone asked him how he learned to play the guitar so well. He replied that of course you need to learn at least basic chords and fingering first, but then it's important to COPY other guitarists - over and over again. He said he taught himself. Once you get the hang of it (which usually takes a long time), it gradually adds a specific style.
I was recently thinking about which song I would choose as the truly best Pink Floyd song. And finally I came to the conclusion that Shine on you Crazy Diamond. It's long enough (I like their long songs), perfectly crafted (I wouldn't add or change a single note), it has saxophones (I love Dick Parry), the original album version has a long keyboard part by Rick Wright (brilliant) and I'm moved every time I realize the message of this song and when you know the story that played in the recording of this song (an unknown man arrived at Abbey Road studios in 1975 with a bald head, wearing linen trousers, a singlet and a plastic bag in his hand. At first everyone ignored him - they thought that he was a studio employee. After a while someone said it was Syd. They were completely amazed and shocked at the same time. They knew him as a charismatic, handsome young man with thick, curly hair that the girls Jen fought over. No one could say a word and Waters he burst into tears. After a while he left without saying a word. This all happened during the recording of the song - it gives me chills) is incredibly moving for me. This is - in my opinion - an absolute musical gem.
