I suspect Moonpie actually did know the Tokyo team was dangerous. But like many men, especially jocks, Moonpie hid his fear under hubris. His constant demeaning of Tokyo players being little men was actually Moonpie's psychological means of dealing with his own inner fears. Tokyo was No. 2 in the rankings which means they were indeed a dangerous team. Houston played with power. Tokyo played with speed. More often than not, speed wins over power. Buuuut, and there's a big but. Power can and does beat speed when played with precision, discipline, skill, and leadership. The faster team gets ground down by power, losing men to injuries and other. The power team can literally overpower a faster team in the end which is what Houston did. To be sure they couldn't have won without Jonathan E.'s leadership, inspiration, and personal powerful athletic prowess. Moonpie, Jonathan E.'s sidekick, was an invaluable contributor until the Tokyo team took the risk of taking out Moonpie. It was a calculated risk that Tokyo paid for when Jonathan E. took revenge but in the end Tokyo still lost.
Apparently the cast and crew used to play it between shots during filming, and found it surprisingly playable. I guess they were helped by the fact that the rules are described in great detail, down to the weight of the ball, the number of substitutions permitted, and the diameter of the playing arena.
TH-cam realtime listening to Metokur's livestream about Rekeita on my phone is what brought me here. Nick mentioned this scene in his ramble that Metokur is restreaming.
This movie has some stuff that is happening now!!!😮😮😮😮 Its like it predicted the future!!!! At least were the part on these huge corporations and companies running the government!!!! This movie was made in 1974-1975 and is still action packed and thrilling to watch!!!!😊😊😊😊😊
High octane movie. It drags badly in between the games sequences which are spectacular. One of the first movie to include all the stunt performers in the closing credits who get extra kudos because despite the brutality portrayed in the movie, there were no serious injuries during filming.
There are actual rules to this game - which explicitly state that you can not attack a motorcyclist A motorcyclist's job is simply to provide momentum for their teammates. So when Moonpie attacks the Japanese motorcyclist, he's in serious trouble ...
Underrated masterpiece
As a kid I understood Jonathan was the only who knew the Tokyo team was hella dangerous. Moonpie didn’t which cost him his life. 😮

Classic that still hooks me in! Hey how about the Tokyo player with glasses…must be the intellectual leader. 😄
Stereotypical of Japanese soldiers during WW2.
Should have started clip with corporate anthem. Set the tone for whole scene as the players realized what was coming.
I like how team Tokyo skated around the rink, Doing karate moves
It sounds as if the Tokyo fans chant said “Infrared Tokyo, infrared Tokyo.”
I think the translation for Tokyo fan's chant is "Tokoyo undeafeated."
I love this game ❤️
If only this was a real sport. This makes NFL look like badminton.
Agreed 🎉
It makes rugby look like an origami tournament. How I’d love a real life Rollerball League.
Those daisies soccer players wouldn’t last one minute on a Rollerball game.

Yeah, but then the players would get killed or put into comas.

Frighteningly enough it nailed globalism dead on 50 years before.
Great movie 🎉
The anti-Japanese racism in this scene is undeniable.
Turns 50
Coming 2025
If this were the norm, I would actually care about sports.
東京チームの試合前のデモンストレーションはリアルタイムで観たとき、ダサいと思ったが、今観ると非常に勇ましく感じる。
What is with one of the Tokyo skaters wearing glasses? Is this just a WW2 stereotype?
Tokyo team performs like a Kamikaze.

Awesomeness
IS this a Film?😊
Yes, a theatrical film, released in 1975. It was fairly popular at the time.
The stadium scenes were filmed in Munich, West Germany which had just recently held the Olympics.
