I first saw this movie wen I was 10 . Wanted to be motorcycle driver in this "sport" ever since .

I saw it at the theatre in 1975, which was one of the best years of my life
I like how you incorporated the script into the song, using the whole scene. It adds something to it, it allows the story weave through the track.

If rollerball was a real thing, I don't know if I would watch it. Great movie. Editing must have been hard.
It was a fun project, but making the music and indeed this entire album was the best part.
I saw the great Jonathon E. when I was a kid my Dad took me and my brother to see Rollerball. He is one of my hero's fighting to fight for what is right and he is the greatest Rollerballer who ever was
Made in 1975, this was the 1st film where stunt actors received screen credit. They loved playing the game between setups. I still think this could be a real game today, but with an oval track.

You count on that happening when the four major sports leagues in this country go broke.
In other words, Foreskin, you completely missed the movie's point.
Look up Rollball, a sport played in India. It is quite similar, players on rollerblades bounce a ball and try to score on the opposing team's goal.
The "Speedball" must hold the Ball in full view of the audience at all times during combat, 3 circuits of the track must be completed before you can score, he holds, he shoots, he scores!
In the original story ("Roller Ball Murder"), there is no goal. The game is more like roller derby - runners field the ball using lacrosse sticks and score points by carrying it past all the opposing team's skaters.
If the newer movie had been like this it might have been actually watchable.
I like to pretend the newer movie never existed.

God did that remake suck! What the hell was John McTiernan thinking. Imagine if they had had a crappy director...the movie would've been worse...if that's possible.

I use to play a version of this Purlely on ice skates, wearing hockey gear, was as violent as the film, we called it ICE BALL, happy days

There's a well-documented story that during long breaks, as the director was setting up the next shots, the stunt men and some of the actors would actually play short games of Rollerball. I think that's pretty cool.

fantastic. saw this at the cinema back in the day, i was only 14, the film carried an 18 certificate! inspiring stuff, got me into roller skating in a big way. good memories. great soundtrack on this clip too.

Yes, as i recall myself and my mate dressed up smart and made ourselves look much older than we really were! used to do that a lot back in the 70's, the Odeon was quite easy to get into to.

When I see those punches thrown, I wonder what kind of damage can be done by hitting a football helmet with a gloved hand, even when the glove has metal studs on it. Not that I'd want to take a punch like that, even if I had a football helmet on. I never played football - I suppose if I had, I'd know what kind of damage a punch from a studded glove could do, and I might be even more reluctant to take one.
The concussions are real regardless.

I was sceptical about the pretty high volume of the movie scenes but it works out great.
Ever ask yourselves how many of the world's people would give up freedom in exchange for food,shelter,good health,pleasure & security? Why do I think a rather large number would gladly make such a exchange?

contrast. Your approach is the action one. It's the complement.
For me the next step will be to watch Rollerball again in original version, I
still have a VHS machine and I watched it dubbed. The dub is very nice but your
album brought brighter aural colours to my mind!

Even with ice spike intonthe tires, you'd have to be nuts to put a motorcycle on an ice rink, even assuming the rink owner allows it.
This blood sport has an interesting blood sport appeal or it, almost like Roman gladiator battles. Or chariot racing.
Man this should be MADE to happen. Use electric bikes to make it a little safer and it would be TV GOLD! (Full punches and violence allowed!)
Roller Derby was popular in the mid 1970s when this was made.

I thought that this movie was groundbreaking in some small ways. Like, whoever would have thought to use motorcycles in a futuristic contest like this? Or the way each team is in their own "formation" as they are skating around the track before the start of the contest? And how about the use of a 3lb stainless steel ball shot from a cannon?!?! Nothing new about the plot however. The same old evil, greedy capitalist theme from Hollywood!

There was a group of promoters who wanted to buy the rights from the producers to the game to actually start a Rollerball league, but it never materialized

Some of you may have seen that there's a video on TH-cam titled 'Top 10 Fictional Sports from Movies and TV'.
Rollerball is on the list but, shockingly, it's only #6. The sports ranked above it, in ascending order, are the Transcontinental Road Race, BASEketball, Pro-Bending, Pod-racing and Quidditch. I believe Rollerball at least deserves to be in the top 5. What do you guys think?

@@ShiryuGL yeah I'd heard that and that they wanted to start a league after the filming wrapped. What a fantastic but unappreciated movie; if you get past the game scenes, there's quite a story being played out.The 70's really were a great decade for cinema, thanks for this piece, music is fab.

@@ShiryuGL I know, crazy. The year of blade runner as well I think! Funny how that seems a much later movie but was actually made only half a dozen years or so after rollerball. Remember watching rollerball as a child and loving the match scenes and yawning between them but now I understand that the real story is in these quieter segments.the original story is on here as a 30 minute radio broadcast, somewhere.It's good but a lot simpler than the film.
'Blade Runner' is 2019, next year, I hope to make something special for it despite already having released a small tribute album for the movie as well.

The bike crash at 2:40 looked like it was a real accident, and not a staged part of the film.
That's how good the stunt crew was.

I can't find a copy of it. Even had a deposit for a DVD and was later told that nope, we can't get it either.
Maybe for a while, maybe... but it would not last unless people where all under the influence of some mind numbing drug like in the movie "Equilibrium" because the human spirit will always hunger more for freedom of choice and liberty.

If the ball had hit him then would have been classed as using it as a weapon and Johnathan would have been penalised. But the ball didn't touch the Madrid player so, in my opinion, Johnathan didn't break any rules.

+ShiryuGL Considering the players are encouraged to smash into each other as hard and fast as possible, I would be surprised if it was against the rules.
Imagine how much impact a 20lb silver ball would be on a player.
