I'm 61 years old and saw this 1975 at the drive in movies. This film is a CLASSIC. And in the year 2923 I am still watching this movie. I found the whole movie on Prime Video.
We played Roller Stick after this Movie came out . 2 Sting Ray Riders wearing Boxing Gloves towed the Combatant on Skates . The Skater held a Hockey Stick with a Boxing Glove on it and wore the other Glove normally . It was like Jousting at first then became a Melee . The rules were simple Draw as much blood as possible , it did not matter whose Blood it was . Other rules were ruin your Clothes and Bikes . 5 Days of Carnage and Fun . Then the Mothers put a stop to it ! Massive Blood Stains on the Asphalt in front of the House . Then High school started .
Rollerball's rules are described in great detail, down to the length of the penalty timeouts, the diameter of the arena, and the weight of the ball. The cast and crew used to play between shooting and found the game surprisingly playable.
My favorite part is before the final match, when Jonathan E. gives that speech to Moonpie before he laces them up and goes out there. As a sports movie, it had many of those legendary elements like “The Natural,” while Caan’s character held that quiet intensity of a true champion very well.
@@Dremeli I live in Oakland. That part resonated with me. People having high powered weapons (fully automatic) and having great times with them at drunken parties. Pretty much a reflection of the general public’s fascination with violence, power, and brutality - but unable to properly harness it, and destroying the community (trees, earth) while fulfilling the fantasy
Ironically, here in the 2020s, a somewhat scaled down version of Rollerball (curbing fighting, no spikes on gloves) would be less violent than MMA, let alone other combat sports.
Classic. Humans will always be fascinated with violent sport. Just like the days of Ancient Rome. In many ways we will never change. The bloodlust is the same only the games vary.
U Tell the Powers that Be up the chain mail of Command , make a RollerBall series Stream it not a one off movie, a full season 10 eps 10 yrs before the movie's opening game / pre playoffs
Many people think of this as a sci-fi sports movie, but it was very prophetic about the future. A future where corporations mean more than nations.
That and more. All needs are taken care of, no hunger or poverty, so bloodsport is all people care about

Wow thanks phil

I liked it RIP James Caan

The stuntmen must have had tons of fun doing this movie.
They were actually playing Rollerball for real between takes!
@@darrylgonzalez5251 Ive heard that
The first time stuntmen where giving credit in a movie.
One of the best sport films ever, if you ask me. I think it's better than Rocky.

@@jswin2084 the movie has also quite strange moments, like the one where the members of party are shooting trees.

An actor like very few, and an admirable person. R.I.P. James Caan
From Sonny Corleone to Johnathan E, the best performance by the great late James Caan
Was great in Thief
The scene of them all skating in formation at 0:29 will never not be intimidating/awesome
James Caan was a legend
Even with time and technology, humanity will still be dumbfounded by a referee's poor vision.
❤awesome
Sorta like what happens when the cast of Starlight Express crashed a Quidditch scene on the Harry Potter set.
The director was horrified when people wanted to make this into a real sport.

must hold ball in plain view at all times then immediately hides behind another person
It means no hiding it under clothes, padding, etc.

I watch this movie on TCM last year
It's like roulette with people in the way.
Also like roller derby with all the hitting, tripping, roughing and such.

Love this movie. Love James Caan.
I would would totally play this sport because I played hockey and football so I would love to do this.
What a brutal exciting scene
Very much like roller derby, the hitting, tripping, pushing.
Set in 2018, we are FAR closer to Rollerball, with the Corporation corporate state than we were ever to the nonsense of The Handmaid's Tale.
❤❤love this movie
I loved this game when I 1st saw it
The black guy for Houston is Moses Gunn from Guilford Connecticut
This should be a real sport on either ESPN or NESN
RIP Norman Jewison
This is where JK Rowling got the idea for Quiddich. 😀
This looks slightly less violent than Canadian Ice Hockey.
Agreed. Especially in light of recent events.
😂
Why was this never made into a video game but with equal amounts of violence? Would be fun
The video game was called Speedball (1988) by publisher Bitmap Brothers, the last game in the series was in 2011
Awesomeness
Now go watch the final match to see how far things progress.
this is an edited scene of the madrid game...
Mr Bartholomew, head of the Energy Corporation who owns the Houston team, reminds me of George Soros.
I was first to watch this amazing video
Hou Mad
Trailer Teen Witch 1989 please
Quite woeful really
How? 🤣
And this was an X rated film 😂🤣
