  • Global travel with nothing but a bum bag - Video 5/ The personal effects of travelling without luggage.
In this episode, I reflect on how minimalism has had a lasting influence on my life. I explore some of the positive and negative implications from living out of a tiny bag.
Throughout my travels, I've learnt that the best way to face any pre-trip concerns is simply to begin. We sometimes pay too much attention to all the minor details which add up and can make us lose sight of our primary objectives. By choosing minimalist travel, we are placing all our focus onto just the important things that we really need...but can minimalism become a distraction in itself?
Thank you very much for watching!

Thank you for video. I guess you are saying that being obsessed about being perfect minimalist and have nothing is almost the same as having too much, it's the two sides of the same coin, and that the point is, finally, elsewhere, not in stuff (or in lack of) but in feeling alive, being in the moment, living the life you chose. And I say this as a minimalist, with complete understanding of advantages of minimalism.

I like that you said it's ok to leave things at home because you can buy something you might need on the road.

I like that you’ve said such complimentary things about all my True Minimalist videos, one thousand thanks, Sherri Robinson!
Indeed, it’s very easy to feel attached to a certain something we already own, I feel mostly for that reason - we don’t want to purchase it again. However, all the affordable, little things can and will be replaced at some point.
For every item that you’re not certain you’ll need, you can ask yourself - will this be available where I’m going, should I need/want it.
..and I’m sure it would be!
Thanks again for watching Sherri, your comments and enthusiasm are much appreciated!

Awesome content as usual! I love the cinematic style of your videos. Do YOU record on your phone? Edit on your phone? Maybe you can do a video about how you make your videos lol.
It would be cool if after you make all these you could string them together in a documentary and pitch it to NETFLIX!!😮😮 Just like The Minimalists did thier documentary. I'd LOVE to watch one from you about this bum bag travel. I am gunna try this for myself during my year of self discovery!

Thanks ever so much for saying such pleasant things Breanda! Such a big compliment, thank you.
I was filming all the footage on my phone until it overheated and instantly broke whilst I was in Mexico.
I switched to my girlfriends phone, but this has just been stolen here in Brazil, so am now using a GoPro instead.
The first five videos I filmed of Brazil were edited on my phone (not the True Minimalist series, I now do that on a computer).
When I am walking and not filming, my girlfriend is the one holding the camera for me.
A video about how to make videos whilst travelling as a minimalist and how I make mine, that’s a great suggestion! Definitely a topic to try to conceptualise when I can.
I will be bundling the parts into 30 minute (or more) episodes at some point.
I plan to film many more videos, as well as my minimalist travels when I leave Brazil.
Great to know you want to try travelling without luggage too! I’m sure there are others who would also like to hear how that goes for you, so feel free to share!
Thanks again for showing your support!

Thanks for the video! I’ve been wondering how you film and edit these videos with just the contents of your bum bag?

Jared Studyvin, all the videos were filmed on a phone (replaced with a GoPro when my phone broke). I’m currently living in Brazil, so am able to edit them on a computer. Before starting the True Minimalist series, I did edit my first uploads entirely on my phone (five videos showing my first experiences in São Paulo) but you can obviously be far more creative when you can access a computer.
Thanks very much for watching and for asking the question!

+Lost Yet Free when you edited and uploaded on your phone, what software did you use?

    • @LostYetFree
      @LostYetFree  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mobile Minimalist, good question! I used the free version of FilmoraGo for Android.
I found it convenient for stitching together different footage/files on my phone, but obviously editing on a mobile device has limitations.
I would still use it again if I didn’t have access to a computer but it would be difficult to go back. I’d stick to filming something very simple, knowing I wouldn’t be able to create the music and play around with the audio etc.
FilmoraGo places a watermark animation at the end of the exported project, so I used a second video editing app that doesn’t do this to cut that off and export it again (I’m sorry, I can’t remember the name, I just tried any free app that doesn’t add a watermark onto the final save file).
If your interested you should definitely give it a go and see how you get on! It's a super minimal way to produce content!

+Lost Yet Free Thanks, all my TH-cam videos have been uploaded on my android phone. The first 12 videos, I filmed in one take and trimmed the ends in the TH-cam app, since I didn't know how to edit. Then for the 13th video I decided to learn to edit. I tried FilmoraGo but was frustrated by it. So, tried Kinemaster and was very impressed with it and have been using it ever since. With Kinemaster, you can adjust audio and put background music etc more like a computer editor. However, the free version has a watermark across the whole video, so I bought the app which wasn't too much and has been totally worth it for me. If you ever need to edit on your phone again, definitely check it out!

Thanks for the suggestion. That’s cool you’ve been experimenting with editing on your phone, filming in one take and uploading straight to youtube couldn’t be more efficient!

Thanks for your suggestion and another comment, Mobile Minimalist!
I’ve had another request for this, so I’ve started planning an episode on ‘ultralight packing differences for men and women’.
My girlfriends hasn’t tried any form of ultralight travel before, so we will discuss this in the video. We are very different travellers but she does have some interesting ideas from a female perspective.
      Thanks again for your enthusiasm!

Yes I would also love a video on ultra light travel for women too! Your videos have made me really think what is the bare minimum I need. But as a woman we have to carry more things like reusable pads or cup for our "monthly". Also in different countries there are different standards of "modesty" in dress for women🤔. So maybe we would need a modest outfit and a regular western outfit? Idk. Things I think about now that you have sparked my mind! Great video once again!!

Hi Breanda, it’s brilliant to hear back from others wanting to travel/live this way!
Great to know that you want my input on the topic, there’s a video in the works!
Thanks for sharing your ideas for women going ultralight. Maybe others will see your comments and feel encouraged that they can do it too!
Cultural dress distinctions may add an item or two onto your packing list, but if only visiting such a part of the world, you will end up wearing them, and if/when you are not, you can multi-use them.
      for example:
-head scarf: a sarong can also be used as a skirt, towel or to keep you warm on air-conditioned transport. This would be an extra item for me.
-covering arms/shoulders: a long sleeved top, which can also be used as your second layer in cooler climates. I already pack a long sleeve/shirt for layering.
-covering legs: leggings, any long dress, or full leg cover. I already wear leggings, so once again, wouldn’t add anything extra to my bum bag.
I think it’s important to take items that can be used across different cultures , as you wouldn’t want to pack a ‘modest outfit’ that soon becomes redundant when no longer in a conservative culture.
These are just some first thoughts, I hope they’re of some help.
I’m delighted my videos have made you think further about minimalist travel. I’m so glad you like them!
