I always travel carry on only. Doesn't matter where I'm going or how long I'm staying. Two weeks in Greece....a few days in Switzerland or going back home to Canada where laundry facilities are within reach. There's a sense of freedom that comes with traveling (and living) light. Awesome video!
If you’re coming to Lisbon, be careful with belongings! Also you can eat insanely well pretty much everywhere, specifically in Lisbon you’ll find a hard time in the best restaurants and youll be tempted to go to a bad place if you give up. If you visit the areas around the capital, you have an easier time to find good food. I would give you suggestions, but I think youll have a great time anywhere here, north or south. This is real good, hope you enjoy 😀
It can be very rainy and still chilly in February! I would suggest you add a sweater or some sort of long sleeve, maybe a thick shirt, and either an umbrella or rain coat. Enough socks so you won't need to re-wear wet ones (trust me, it's not fun!) and maybe even a more substantial jacket. Of course you'll double check the weather before you leave,I suppose, but the answer is almost always the same - layers. :) or some sips of Port wine also help warm you up.😂
When I planned my trip to Portugal a couple of years ago, a friend adviced me to bringh a waterproof jaket. This was a good advice and gladly pass it to you. Me personally benefited a lot not only from jacket but also from umbrella that I brought. And spare socks that I had with me wherever I went...
I’ll probably sound as a mom… but, you will definitely need something warmer than a T-shirt. February is winter even in Mediterranean. I really love travelling with 1 backpack. Have a nice trip
Portuguese here! February is a rainy month in Portugal so don't forget a small umbrella or a raincoat! Thank you for the content. I have a trip coming in January to East Timor (Southeast Asia) where is summer all year and I live in the UK rn, so it was a very useful content!
Fantastic video 🙂 I have been getting into "one bag" traveling and I am super excited to continue to cut down my travel load. Your video has provided some great thinking points.
You might need something more substancial than trucker jacket. The nights get chilly and if you go to the north or the interior, you definitely need something warmer
I have to tell you that I went to Portugal last year in February and it was windy and cold. My wife and I ended up going to Decathlon and bough a few jackets and midlayers, but we also tend to run cold.
I always bring 4 shirts, 3 pants (one of them Is a pair of navy blue shorts, that can be use for the pool, beach, or to hangout). 2-3 socks, 3 boxers, a slim hoodie, and a jacket that springs very small into its pocket. That's it as far as clothing. My g-shock.
Nicely done! I don't bring any camera stuff but instead have to bring a travel CPAP + its accessories. Just eyeballing, it seems like that stuff would take up about the same space as your camera and gear, so it's great see that'd probably work with that backpack 😀
Enjoying the content. New subscriber to the channel. Love the fact that you don't make minimalism seem impossible like many others out there. Appreciate it.
Hi!! Here binge watching your latest videos!! Amazing content as always!! 💯 It would be interesting to have a video in which you compare what your partner packs (if it is very different from what you pack), when I travel with someone, I love to see how different the priorities are from person to person, and sometimes you can get surprises when learning different hacks.
Thanks for honesty as most airlines just accept 1 small bag and that s it unless you pay a lot more or have to check it. I struggle as need to bring many inhalers along for longterm and nowhere to leave anything. Am still determined though after airline ruined my trip last time with 2cweek uncompensated wait for lost bag then bus co lost my bag again! Then lastly someine walked off with my bag back in Uk luckily brought it back again. Where J go now it goes in distinctive design too!!!
For me, I tend to lean more towards Merino Wool which is not just anti-odor but also helps regulate your body temperature. Unbound Merino makes some good merino wool clothing although they are a bit on the expensive side. I am not a professional photographer so I just bring my iPhone along and while it's nowhere near perfect...the restrictions it provides help me to box myself and try to make work with what I have. But having said that I should get a drone one of these days. I have been traveling overseas with just one backpack and it's a soothing experience so far. I do bring a nano microfiber towel along with me and my backpack is a 40L tomtac navigator which is only 80 bucks.
Ive been watching packing and travel videos lately. Im possibly moving to another state this year. There are things i cant leave behind obviously its really hard to only pack “what i need” and replace what i can.
This video came out a week after I got back from Japan, and I certainly know it would have inspired me beforehand to just take LESS. I went with a backpack and a carryon and it was just too much with how much city skipping we did. From now on, it’s the backpack only life for me
If you will visit Porto, you need to go to some nice coffee places, such as “Dona Mira” and “Combi Coffee”. Both places are located at Bonfim neighborhood and have wonderful coffees!
Great video Nicholas! I used to travel for work and I always had to bring all my gears( tattoo artist). Now , I think Im ready to travel light just for fun. Your video was very timely 💥 Also, I always make a scan of my passport that I save in the cloud. Loosing my passport was always something in my mind.
This is minimalist packing on a different level !! Will share this with my friends who keeps on packing just-in-case item. All the best for your trip in Feb :) BTW I'm also going on a 4-days trek in Feb !! P.S. Dou have any plans to visit Nazaré in your trip? You'll get some really cool drone shots there.
No surprise on another great video from Nick! I would do a quick research the day before of your trip to see if a rain jacket is necessary. In February the sun can get a bit shy. In the name of the "one backpackers" and your Portuguese friends, I can only say one thing: 🇵🇹 Finally 🇵🇹 or should I say... 🇵🇹 Finalmente! 🇵🇹
Loved this as usual. Do you recommend any cases / organizers for your clothing, tech, and specifically your camera accessories for a clamshell bag like the bellroy?
For smaller tech items - Bellroy Tech Kit For clothes - Peak Design Packing Cube (should have included this in video) For camera - I don’t personally own one, but hear the Peak Design one is great. Hope this helps!
I packed almost the same way for a recent trip to Mexico. But instead of the camera gear I had to pack my bipap machine for the sleep apnea. Definitely a good exercise in deciding on what’s essential 😅
My backpack is a little bit larger than yours. But the few times a year I do actually get to travel, it’s my only bag. I’ve never heard of those shirts before, I think I’ll look into getting them for myself. Everything else I pack is pretty identical to how you do it. My camera, socks and underwear for each day, one pair of jeans, and sweat pants.
I use the same Bellroy backpack but my recommendation is to reduce the clothing to 3 each (t-shirts, socks, underwear) and just wash as you go. Laundry sheets and a Scrubba wash bag (or even a 6L dry bag) are smaller and lighter than all that clothing. I’d also re-pack the toiletries: travel toothbrush, ~30ml squeeze tube for toothpaste (or toothpaste tabs), and travel-size deodorant (or deodorant wipes). With the extra space, you can take additional camera gear, a raincoat, or my favorite “luxury” item: an inflatable seat cushion for the long plane ride. P.S. Cascais has a beautiful, rocky shoreline and is only an hour from Lisbon by train.
@@NicholasGarofola I wish I can convince my wife into one bag as well, but I know she needs her things. I saw those shirts are a bit expensive, but looks like they're probably worth it. Thanks for the recommendation on them.
Biggest problem for me when travelling has been my camera stuff with DSLR and larger lenses (Well just Canon 100-400 and 70-200 but still) but maybe in future I will take most of my photos just with my phone and that would make travelling so much easier :-D
I'm curious about the 20L backpack from Bellroy, can you store like 3-4 tshirts, 4 underwear, 1 shorts, 1 pants, and some small toiletry kit (foldable toothbrush, 8ml perfume spray, and medicines)
Retainer! I had my braces removed in 2002. I STILL wear my retainer. If I skip two nights, on the third night it feels very tight. So I know I still need it.
It usually rains in february here in Portugal. You might want to account for slightly wet weather. Other than that, you're ready to go. Hope you like it here! :)

For only 8 days? I could see this kit sufficing. Especially for those who will rely on their phone as a camera and don’t need a drone. Frees up a bit more space for extra toiletries and maybe a couple more clothing items… I travel pretty much perpetually, so it’s a 40L pack and 8L sling. Still haven’t had my bags weighed by budget airlines…. But honestly, there really is no reason to pack this minimally. A 30L is more forgiving for such a trip. Allowing you to maybe throw in a light rain coat and maybe a travel size umbrella. Possibly an extra pair of pants incase you spill something on the first pair. Oh, and some light weight flip-flops are nice if you just need to slip something on your feet quickly.

Be prepared with a jacket for chilly days specially in the evening, morning, and also rain. I´m an official tour guide. If you need any information about Portugal that I can assist you, tell me.
More boring advice; I wouldn’t keep your passport, card, money all in one place. If that one (lovely) wallet disappears, you’re stuffed! The minimalist in me wants to keep those things in a neat package - like those credit card holders that stick to the phone but practically, they’re not a good idea. On this note, I have a question. Is it a good idea to take a photo of a passport? Surely it would help if you lost your id?
Do people really like the term "partner" for a significant other? I hate it... it sounds like someone you're in business with, not a romantic relationship. Random thought. 😂

Too much underwear and socks. I take a max of 2 each no matter how long I travel. Always a sink or even a shower around so I wash them every night.
