I'd say I'm at level 4/5 but with a large digital backlog. I have lots of photos yet to edit and upload for example and my watch later list is quite long. I also have clutter like notes from my degree which I want to digitalise as I need them for my career but haven't got to it yet.
Thank you for this video, Seve! I’d say I’m living levels 5-6 and totally enjoying this way of life. I also started about 10 years ago. At the moment my older son has moved out and I live with husband and our 8-year-old son. The little one has probably more stuff than we, but compared to the majority of people around us I’d say our son is minimalist as well 😅
Level 2/3. I’ve declutterred a lot and now shifting towards selling the things of value and organizing what I have. Once I sell the things and organize what I have left, will do another round of decluttering. Have limited new purchases to essentials and very conscious and intentional about what I buy. It’s coming along but declutterring is hard work and takes time.
I’m was at 2… transitioning to 3, the beginning of a new era for me!! I hope I can sustain it, I’m trying to confront the coping way I reach for external things (stuff, shopping, relationships, drugs, etc) to comfort the internal world, it’s all connected. It’s a journey! I hope everyone has a love filled day today!
Levels 5-6. We sold 95% of our possessions 8 years ago when we retired. Bought a small RV and travel the USA. Never happier or more free! Things no longer have appeal but experiences do.
@@SunnyKindJourney We hope to travel for a couple more years. Then a small place in a peaceful setting not too far from our large family. Maybe the foothills of Tennessee. We are Southerners at heart so that's our tribe. Oh the lessens we have learned on what we actually need and want. We greatly enjoy your channel Seve
I want to do that, but my insurance company and DMV here require me to have a residential address. I'm old, alone and just renting a room which is expensive for low income like me. How did you go about that (the residential address required)?
Старый и одинокий и без постоянного жилья? У вас обязательно должно быть уютное жильё и друзья,которые могли бы вас посещать и делать вас нужным и счастливым..@@jimc8925
You are literally living my dream! (I am definitely leaning more between 6 and 7; I say this because I do have the "I only keep that which I can use and that which sufficiently and efficiently meets my needs and purposes" mindset [or the "survivalist/wilderness" mindset I call it because wilderness survivalism [bushcraft] is where I originally derived the mindset] even though I do not mind more "wanted" things here and there) And "Things no longer have appeal but experiences do." really does summarize minimalism, and is actually what we are to seek after! ❤
I'm at level 6, I have the bare minimum for my apartment. Bed, table to eat, and desk to work at, that's all the furniture I have, and I'm happy as can be. Because I don't have a lot of things at home I'm "forced" to spend most of my time outside in nature or making friends. I also have saved so much money from this life over the past 4 years that I can easily afford to travel to different states/countries during breaks from work. The only real decoration I have is a tiny snake plant I've named Ted and a stuffed bear I've had since I was a child. And I feel like this is all I need to be happy
Currently at 4-5. I grew up with parents who kept everything, so I had to fight the hoarding mindset I learned from them to get there! It originates from a scarcity mentality in their case, as well as, for my Dad, the need to keep extensive documentation about everything he’s ever done. They are still at Level 1 even now, acquiring more stuff every year. Being in their large home stuffed to the seams makes me feel stressed and anxious. I’m really glad I worked through my own hoarding tendencies and have a very different approach to life.
@@LadyPelikan Yes, you certainly can. I believe the key is to think about how you want to live, and what you value in life, and be guided by those. Also to look at limiting beliefs and challenge them: are they really serving you? My parents hoard because they have a scarcity mentality: they believe they must hang on to everything that might possibly be useful on day, otherwise they might find they need it and can’t get it. They are hedging their bets against something unlikely to ever happen, and using up their space to do it, completely sacrificing their quality of life in the process. If you can reflect on the beliefs driving your hoarding tendencies and replace them, change comes naturally. My parents don’t seem to be able to see this, but the fact you are here watching this shows you’re open to reflecting on what’s driving the hoarding, and willing to make a change. You can absolutely not be a hoarder if you prefer not to; you just need to make the decision and commit to it 😀
I started my mimal journey when I was ... 13 years old! I saw how many things my parents had when we moved to a new house. Now, almost 20 years later, I am on level 5, sometimes even 6 (on journeys). Last time- I started my travel two months ago. I have a laptop for work, few piece of clothes, shoes for running and... That's it. Great feeling!
I'm on level 3, and i don't think I want to go any further. I like decorating my room with little stuff, I like buying figurines. They simply make me happy. Maybe i'll think differently in few years, but for now, level 3 seems the most appropriate to me :)
I feel attacked at level 2 😅 I’ve been on my journey for a few months and after getting rid of what I thought was a lot I still have hundreds of DVDs, books, and video games I’ve never touched and probably never will. Just took pictures of the more collectible ones to put on eBay this weekend, and looking for a place to sell the game xtra clutter even if for a handful of dollars. But it’s a process and I’m working on it after realizing that this massive collection I’ve gathered is based on childhood trauma of poverty and now that I’m an adult with a good job I can afford to buy all this nonsense. I’m ready to let go. Thank you for this video, it came at the perfect time for me.
It sounds like you are actually higher than that since you are so actively decluttering and clearly have the mindset to simplify 😊 As you said, it's a process and I wish you all the best! 🙌🏼
@@SunnyKindJourney thank you. It’s a lot harder than it seems sometimes. Outside of channels like yours, my biggest inspiration has been the book Goodbye Things by Fumio Sasaki. I identified with his struggle more than anyone else I’ve ever seen/read. None the less, thank you for your videos and kind words.
My husband collected so much vhs and i ended throwing them away because no one wants it when he passed away .things that ten years never been used were donated and give away
Jorge....two TH-cam channels really help me, because they verbalize their thoughts about the items as they declutter: 1) the oldest videos from Erica Lucas when she first started her decluttering journey with rooms absolutely stuffed full of boxes, and 2) Dana K. White who has a no mess method that is not overwhelming and makes consistent progress (look at her older videos of "1 hour better" and "container concept" for examples of her 5 step process. Hope this helps!
I'm at level 6 and I love it! I just moved countries with only 3 suitcases and after 2 weeks started decluttering again. 😂 Right now I am renting a furnished appartment temporarily. And when I find a permanent place, I am not intending to buy more than the absolute minimum that I need.
Our family (myself, my husband, and our children) hopped a Greyhound 5 years ago with a tent, a couple sleeping bags, no pillows, and 2 suitcases. We were homeless for a year, thanks to c●●cer. Not fun. You don't NEED much to survive, but if you want to *live,* it's nice to have stuff.
would you buy them again if you had the money to? Can you afford to get a better version of those things? Try to find out if there's a place that gives you money per weight of things. If not donate them and then get second hand things/refurbished things, but make sure to focus on quality durability and you have to love the item, all 3 of those. If not don't buy anything. That's the trap with second hand. Just need to remember those rules before buying.
how much time does it take you to sell all of them, really? put an hourly wage on that. Then see if its worth your time trying to sell them or giving them away would perhaps even cost you less time? I personnally would only try to sell loose items that extend a certain value. Say anything less then 200 dollar for ex. i dont even bother trying to sell
Those "things" deserve to be used by persons who need them so consider donating to Good Will, Red Cross, Habitat and you get a tax write off. It doesn't matter what you paid for them consider the value of your TIME messing around with them for no purpose.
I’m 3-4, my husband is 2, and my 2 and 6 y.o. kids are extremely 1. 😊 I do decluttering their stuff too, but I want it to be as slight as possible, so that they don’t feel they don’t own their stuff at all. When my 6 y.o. son got an unwanted toy for his birthday I offered him to sell it and a couple of old toys as well and buy just one, but the one he would actually love. He said yes, and I made sure he felt the benefit of this decision. The problem is you can’t be truly minimal with kids. They need stuff as stimulation for their nervous system. I don’t want them to grow up in a minimal environment only to fall into an insane consumerism after moving away because their parents wouldn’t let them anything they wanted. I think a person isn’t becoming minimalist under pressure… I hope to gain that 5 level eventually. It’s so nice of you to focus on mind while describing those levels.
We see this with food, too. I had an ex, as just one example, who was never allowed to have any kind of junk food. None. Then he turned 18, moved out, and blimped up. Soda, fruit snacks, freezer meals, fast food...he absolutely binged on all the stuff he'd been forbidden to touch. Plus, look at the scarcity mindset a lot of older people who went through the 30s and 40s have/had. They know what it's like to have nothing so many of them cling to EVERYTHING. And what about those who get so used to having nothing that the rest of the world is too overwhelming and overstimulating for them? How will they handle anything? Time will tell how the children of today's extreme minimalist parents turn out...
My husband and I were at a 4 up until we moved this year, now we're more of a 5. Ironcially, our social circle changing in the way you described meant we had to get a second table for Bible studies and family meals, because we needed more seating we could move around and more places to put a book or a plate. As much as we enjoyed the empty space in the house, we valued having places for guests more.
I started getting rid of my stuff extremely slowly yrs ago around 2010 without realizing cause every time I moved I'd get rid of stuff n when my cousins came to visit I would give them some clothes that didn't fit me anymore as I was getting older n n recently with my father having terminal cancer n just after going through Hurricane Milton..was able to clean out my patio n started getting rid of more stuff OMG .I'm at level without realizing it n I feel like I can breathe more n feel less anxious n I'm very proud of myself also having a 4 yr old boy n being a single mom it's not easy but Thank u sooo much u brought more clarity into my life n I love watching ur videos .Jax fl👍🙏🙏
After 10 years of minimalism I’ve settled on 5. It’s impactful yet lends itself well as a family lifestyle. It’s sustainable, possible to keep up in the long run. It’s a core value and something that’s with me daily, but it doesn’t consume me. Very balanced!
I used to be at level 6 when I was moving to another country with 2 backpacks, over the past few years I fell back to level 4 but your video has opened my eyes and gave me the push I needed to declutter again. Thank you! 🙌
Before becoming a mom I feel I was at level 4/5 and now that my baby is 14 months I’m at level 2 😢 it’s overwhelming and distracting- slowly working on declutterring and inviting my self care, intentional living, mindfulness awareness to get back to my artist focus lifestyle so I can be an example to my child. Excited to mold and implement this life style- it feels free and weightless ❤
There is a lot of stuff that you think you need for the baby, but try to keep it as simple as possible, especially with toys. When they become teenagers, all they need is their screen, and maybe some sporting equipment.
I can imagine that everything changes once your priorities shift. And I don't think there's nothing wrong with that. Just aim to get yourself back to the old good habits when you have the time and energy (if you still wish to continue them). Wishing you all the best ❤
@@jessiejohnson1208 Thank you, Yes we get so much gifts for her- Im so grateful but its a lot. Ive been de-cluttering all week, its physically and mentally draining. Excited for the morning I wake up and everything is clear, clean, balanced, and in order
@@SunnyKindJourney Yes, missing that me that prioritized eating clean, yoga, rollerskating, making art, etc. Gonna start small and share those activities that make my heart happy. We need more experiences and less time consuming chores.
I’ve gone from level 2 to level 5 in the space of a few months. I feel like I have much more clarity, both mentally and physically, than I ever have before and it feels so liberating! I now want to tell everyone about this way of living, because i can see how miserable most people are - surrounded by unnecessary clutter (physical and emotional). I wish I had learned this lesson much earlier in life, but I can’t change the past… I can look forward to a much happier and calmer future though ❤ Thank you so much for your lovely videos, you are one of my favourite minimalist TH-camrs to watch and I will be recommending your content to others starting out on this journey!
I’m a 3 but still overwhelmed so I have more work to do, I just trashed my entire wardrobe and started over so that’s taken some months to thrift pieces but it feels better. I’m aiming for a more minimal aesthetic in my clothes too. It’s hard for me to part with them more than any other category!
I’m at level 5 with many aspects of level 6. I was at level 5 for many years. Then, 2 years ago I lost my house and many possessions in a natural disaster. I started life again with only the things I had stuffed into my car when I evacuated. I haven’t felt any need to replace much. I prefer to travel light, as they say.
4,5 for me :-) Having kids, a partner for some of the time and also inheriting posessions makes minimalism an uphill thing. When I was younger it was a solid 6, but I was often criticised for it. "Neurotic" and "sterile surroundings" is what I was told. I managed to ignore it as I always valued the clarity and peace it gave me and I aspire to return to it when my youngest child leaves the house. Until then, I live a good compromise and living with a loved one far outweighs further simplifying. Let me also say that I was very grateful for the minimalism movement when it finally took off. It was good to see that I was not alone, least of all "neurotic" in my endeavour not to be weighed down by things. I have considered myself a minimalist for over 40 of my currently 58 years and I will continue to be one. Thank you for all your lovely videos Seve.
I’m currently at Level 3, hopefully just about to go to Level 4. I’ve never liked owning a lot of stuff and having a busy social/work life has always been stressful. I’ve found since consciously declutterring many areas of my life has reduced a lot of anxiety and overwhelm for me.
I am definitely at level 4. I am using up things and throwing things away, bringing things to goodwill if they're still okay but I don't use them, I'm trying to recycle as best as I can, and I feel it gives me rest to realize I know what I have, or when I'm down to the last thing of something. Sometimes I use up but decide not to re-buy. I question everything I own and it's function. I feel especially as a woman, you are told you need so many more clothes or products, this is not always the case. I enjoy watching these videos and seeing the responses of people who are also conscious of their environment and what they consume. I care about the planet and I always have, but I feel I am only alone. If we all pick up some trash outdoors sometimes, and throw it away in the trashbin, we all help a little bit.
We're near Chicago. I'm 74, I've been trash picking for years on beaches, at parks, and around my neighborhood. There are several of us. I seldom buy anything but food. I volunteer at 3 different places. I have friends who shop and complain for hobbies. It's all in your outlook. Keep doing the best you can. Tina, Al's wife
#6. I own 45 things. A “thing” can be a plastic shoebox which holds all kitchen utensils, or cosmetics, or tools, desk supplies. If I can't buy a SINGLE highlighter, I'm not buying a pack of 6! To fill up my box! As Fumio Sasaki said “I can move out of my home just as easily as the time it takes someone else to order a coffee.” My only large items are my bed, small table, chair, desktop computer, and a suitcase. EDIT: By popular demand added my list. Don't count what I'm wearing, food or consumables or condo/hurricane supplies or major appliances/wall mounted TV (lol). NOT COUNTED: Handbag, Wallet, Sm.Documents box, Phone, Glasses/case, Coat, Gloves - They are ON ME. NOT COUNTED: CONSUMABLEs: Food, Cleaning Supplies incl trash can, tote of spare supplies GENERAL LIST give or take: 9 LIFE TOOLS: 1 shoebox cosmetics 1 shoebox dental 1 shoebox health 3 towels, cloths 2 Electronics: Desktop Computer & printer, iPad 1 Suitcase 22 CLOTHING: 5 pr shoes 15 garments 2 other handbags
4 FURNITURE: Adjustable Bed & Linens Chair & Ottoman Table Clock 4 KITCHEN Vitamix 6 dishes and 8 jars stick vacuum Shoebox utensils and towels
I counted out the bare minimum of items and even then it was more than 45... How is this possible to own only 45 items? Or do you use other people's items but not own them? My list of items I came up with: Bed Suitcase Table Chair Laptop Wallet ID card Spork Knife Bowl Plate Serving spoon Pot Cup Hand towel Salt & pepper container Sponge Cleaning solution or dishsoap Bath towel Wash cloth Body Soap Toilet paper Tooth brush Tooth pick/floss Hair brush/comb 2 Handkerchiefs Razor Pillow Pillowcase Blanket Sheet 2 Shirts 2 Pants 2 underware 2 pair of socks Shoes Pencil Paper Trash bags Box Waste basket phone
@@sarahpfeuffer1396 How is it possible? By READING BETTER. I said ONE THING is a SHOE BOX of like-items like all my kitchen utensils. No I am not counting each fork and spoon FFS. Also not counting perishables like food or paper products.🙃 Gurl you SERIOUSLY counted "one pencil" "id card" ??? Let's use some common sense. See my list I posted under your other reply.
I vascillate between your levels 3 and 4. Life comes in phases, and things, obligations go along with that. Cabin outside of a city sounds utterly idyllic to me, but I'm in that phase yet. Someday, I hope.
We are at Level 1.5… not hoarders by any means, but our apartment is way too small for three kids, so even when things are cleaned up there are lots of things which don’t fit anywhere. I am constantly throwing things out or selling things, but the inflow from the kids and hubs is just too fast to keep up with. And yes it is totally overwhelming
I know exactly what you mean. What helped us is our "1 in 2 out" system. Which means that for example when a kid needs new shirts because the previous size does not fit anymore we bought (or thrifted) 1 shirt for every 2 shirts that we got rid of. It helped a lot to reduce the clothing until everyone had a reasonable amount. Same with artwork, school supplies, toys, etc. We had too much. Also we used up all our pencils, notebooks, toiletries, cleaning stuff, etc. And afterwards replaced everything with only half the amount we had before. Our apartment feels so much bigger now. And we don't miss the unused piles at all.
@@elliw. what about holding onto clothing for the smaller kids? it's more economical that way and helps the budget.. the one in one out doesn't work well
@@HosCreates If you have kids of the same gender who are similar in age that's a good option to keep your costs low. And of course if the clothes are still in a very good condition. But if your kids are further apart keeping the clothing will only take up space. And your younger kids might not like to wear the older siblings' clothing. Younger kids deserve their own unique and new stuff as well.
I comfortable fit into 5. About every 18 months or so I find life brings me closer to 4, but you reassess and curate to changes in needs. No essential are all loved and used. I have enough.
I am coming from a culture where keeping and owning things means wealth especially food. I was level 2 for 28 years when I got pregnant and realized I had no space for a baby. This was the time when minimalism hit me on the face. Now it is 6 years later still trying to reach level 5. But with kids and a well organized clutter lover husband we were able to move from stage 3 to 4. For me was hard accepting the mindset that decluttering will be a part of my everyday life. But I guess this is how it works. We used to live in a van for years so I know how much stuff really need to live, very few! So still progressing, but we are on the way!
Like others I’m 4-5 with a heavy lean into 5. And like others have said, I’m actually happy here. I learned decades ago that my environment is very important, and completely empty doesn’t relax me any more than cluttered. That was also around the time I coined the phrase “opulent minimalism” for my style, as I like lots of negative space in rooms and few items on surfaces but I like any items/furnture to be beautifully designed or detailed. A real balance between having few possessions, but they truly bring me joy. It’s the same with my relationships and activities. The ethos permeates my entire life.
Very interesting view of it Seve! I would say I'm at a level 3-4; my mindset is closer to 4, my environment closer to 3. I am working on it! I aim to get to a level 4-5, I think that is where I'll feel most comfortable, peaceful and fulfilled.
I'm on level 4 and it's been an amazing experience. The essential to an essential lifestile and clear state of mind. I feel free. Thank you so much for this video! It helped me a lot in my journey.
I'm currently somewhere between 4 and 5. My journey has been amazing and I'm excited to continue to achieve the level of minimalism that works best for me (probably 6).
I’m definitely at level 3 and going to level 4. I never was at level 1 but for a good amount of years I was at level 2. Since I started traveling often around Europe for work and/or for pleasure I realized that I was living a messy lifestyle. I became more aware of spending money and sources, I’ve started choosing quality over quantity, I try to reach a slow living lifestyle, not that “trendy” one but the meaningful and the therapeutic one. Level 4 is still far away but I’m working on it ❤
I'm somewhere between 4-5 and now a bit stuck. Over the last probably 5 years I have let go of easily 80%+ of my stuff. I have no issue letting things go. But I also have depression issues and it holds me back having better control and enjoyment of my life. I struggle keeping things tidy despite the reduced amount of belongings. But it does help immensely that what I have has been reduced significantly.
3 of us live in a 2BR apartment. My craft supplies fit in a small bookcase and under my bed. We travel with carry-on only. Very few clothes, small TV, library books, buying needs only. I enjoy my crafting and use mostly second-hand items. Tina, Al's wife
Call myself a minimalist would be a self insult. I am just taking advantage of minimalistic techniques to have an easier life, easier to clean, easier to get ready in the morning, easier to cook. Also, easier to get new things because I have space now. That part is the tricky one.
being a minimalist is a frame of mind , it can include: eco friendly practices, an aesthetic, only having enough for your needs etc but the true mind frame is to make life simpler and easier that having less but quality is more . Id call you a moderate minimalist be the sound of what you described yourself as.
Somewhere around 4-5, minimalism is a part of my life. I enjoy the increased freedom. I carefully consider both things coming into my life and things going out of my life. I still make mistakes from time to time with impulsivity, but not often. I generally feel like my life would be better if I was slightly more minimalistic, but I feel I am close to what I consider my ideal level of life complexity.
I'm at level 4. I'm so pleased to open closets and see the empty space. Wish I could help my friends at level 1 and 2 but I understand it comes from a personal decision. I love your videos. Very inspirational.
Thank you so much for this video! For a few years now I have been feeling worse and worse without seemingly any reason at all... I fell from a solid 4 to a 2.... And wondered why all my time just vanished... The 4 was not intentional, so I wasn't aware of it's benefits. Well, now is the time to do all of it intentional and go back to 4 where I was so happy and content.
Currently I'm transitionning from level 5 to level 6. I feel more at peaced when my home is clutter free. I'm doing a challenge 30 days with 110 items which is quite extreme, it's been 6 days in now and I'm not feeling like something's missing. It's quite surprising how you can live with so much less items than you might think.
I like that you've developed a spectral way of thinking about minimalism. I find that I exist at different levels throughout the year (2-4). My surroundings are an accurate reflection of my mental health.
Level 4 here, now focusing a lot on digital minimalism (yes, I am reading that book 🙂). Still a long way until level 5 (I think I'll stop there), but it's a progressive path. Thanks for sharing!
I'm at three or four. Long time ago I was very motivated to become organized and I spent a lot of time cleaning but never felt like I was decluttered enough. At some point I decided to throw away things I didn't use. As I did, I felt a lot of relief. I didn't realize that this process was already a thing and that it was called minimalism. Now I look at minimalism as a goal to have nothing and still be happy. At least minimalism is a thing to practice to train yourself to not be attached to what you have. At least that's one benefit.
Level 4 and almost at Level 5 with a dash of Level 6 in our main living spaces haha. I wanted Level 6 for a long time, but now having a child, it doesn’t fit with our lifestyle and I’m happy to cultivate Level 5 as a main goal. Level 7 would be lovely once a year as a retreat from normal life, but like you said, not striving for that for everyday. This was such a fun and interesting video concept, and I loved the simple presentation and b-roll! Well done! ❤
I think my husband and I are around 5. We have some things, but definitely are very mindful about what we need and don't need. Constantly de cluttering things we don't need. Don't buy new clothes often, buy second hand a lot. Digitally we are also very minimal. It feels great and you feel a good freedom from being more minimal. I grew up in a house that was between a 1 and 2, depending on the year and it was so overwhelming.
I am hovering between levels 3 and 4…finding it tough to go deeper in my decluttering journey partially because I work a lot. My free time at home is limited at this point in my life. Also, I live with someone at level 2…definitely an organized hoarder who would probably lean more to level 1 if he didn’t live with me. It will take me a little longer than most but I’ll get there slowly. Level 5 is where I want to be. I plan my free days around decluttering specific areas so I am mindful about it but still have a hard time letting go of sentimental and what if one day items. This 7 level chart is extremely helpful and puts my journey into perspective. I started decluttering a year ago…but still have such a long way to go. Thank you for this very helpful video Seve!
'Saying Yes to everything' and lack of boundaries (Level 2) were such interesting and new aspects for me ... hadn't seen that connection before, thank you so very much! I have been purifying my life for some years now, and to me, it's foremost about cognitive processes. Because something is off when you surround yourself with stuff - and people - that do not support you, don't uplift you. It is a journey, and it's beautiful. I am in a very good place now, literally :-) You inspire me to be even more focused on my individual preferences, and what serves me truly. All the best!
good explanation to the levels. Sometimes you can switch from one to other. of example a retreat will do that. this minimalism thing came to us, because we owned too much and couldn’t get loose. It overwhelmed us. Our eye was on consuming, because it said you need it, for better feeling. But we didn’t felt better. So we challenged to select what we realy need for good life. And let it go, when it has done its purpose. In past time I was forced to minimalism. Now I see the good thing by this time. I didn’t miss anything, but thought missing. Now I live consciously in that state, estimate sunlight, warmth, good talk, health, thats all i need basically. Drive mostly with bice and wear second hand.
I'm at levels 4-5. I still have items of sentiment that I'm working through but I am capable of traveling and existing very, very lightly. My sentimental items and books are my last true categories to be reduced further and I have been working on them. I recently moved international and took only clothing and school supplies and will be quite happy for 2 years with just those possessions. When I am able to live alone after my studies I will live a very minimal life physically and sort out the last of my belongings. I have a very minimalist mindset though and definitely only keep things that serve a purpose. Sometimes that purpose is joy! It's a journey and I'm happy with the progress I've made :)
I fluctuate between 3-4. The rest of my household typically sits at 2, and I end up being the one who is like, "we don’t have shelf space for more books unless you get rid of some or buy a new bookcase..." 😅
i think i’m in a stage 4 and i’m quite enjoying getting through this level. i’m now.. -selling and removing the clutter that i don’t need anymore -never buying or having ornament with no meaning or reason -buying the daily necessities after they’re out of stock(never stackin them up in my pantry or storage) -thinking more than a week when i wanna buy sth -and thinking as simple as possible in everyday life
4.75 here and I keep on going. I aspire to be 5.5, no more. Making these levels was a good idea. It made me realise how much I accoplished starting at level 2. Thank you for you calm and peaceful materials, all the best to You, my Friend!
I am somewhere between 2 and 3… så 2,5. Making my way to level 3, which probably is the level where I want to be. I started somewhere inbetween 1 and 2 and I am so happy with my progress and feeling better mentally.
definitley at level 4 working towards level 5. i took a break from focusing all my energy on minimalism but now i’m moving apartments and seeing all my stuff like that is making me want to start actively working towards minimalism again lol
Your scale makes sense, interesting video. I have been at level 3 all of my life and always been organised and hated clutter. I am currently at level 4 and in a transitional phase, aspiring to level 5 and really enjoying the process!
I am at a level four. I am actively decluttering my surroundings and storage areas. I’ve been working on the basement this week and have decluttering quite a bit. My goal is to have the basement decluttered and other areas before the end of the year. I would like to start the new year with a fresh start.
This is a good example of leveling. I started with level 2 as status and is currently on Level 4 and I'm trying to maintain & build a strong habit at this level. I felt a certain joy when you discussed level 5 as I am really planning on practicing intentional living. My mindset is to enjoy this journey.
I am a level 3 actively working towards a level 4. Working on it everyday. It brings me peace and joy. I just retired and I want to feel lighter in every aspects of my life.
I definitely made it to level 4. I briefly touched level 5, but life went nuts again and I went back to level 3. I'm trying not to bring in too much stuff and stay conscious of my consumption while I try to get through more of the craziness life has to throw at me.
3-4 and aiming for 5. The “what if” fear voice is still looping very loudly in my gut, but the more I let go, the calmer I feel. I am coming to grips with only having so much time and trying to be mindful of how that time is spent (and with which possessions).
I spent six grueling months pulling myself from 2 up to 4. I had plenty of decision fatigue along the way, but I think it was absolutely worth it. I've been living in level 5 for a year now and it's had such a positive impact on my life. I'm still trying to help my parents move up from 2, but not everyone can be mentally ready for these kinds of changes at the drop of a hat. I'm willing to take the time they need to get there.
Currently moving from level 3 to level 4. Started at level 2 a year ago. We are a family with 2 school kids and a dog. It's been live changing. Everyone is more relaxed and curiously the kids school grades improved as well.
Love this! I am currently still in stage 4, but working my way to stage 5. I started my minimalism journey a year ago and I still make regular donation trips to the thrift store.
I‘ m probably on stage 2 trying to get to stage 3. Reducing my living space from 68m2 to 40m2. Decluttering a lot of my belongings. It feels soo good🙌🙏😌
We're somewhere between 2 and 4, depending on what space or aspect of life you look at.. like the basement is organized clutter, we even stored some of a friend's clutter. The main living areas are being actively decluttered, but there's still a lot in my eyes. Im really excited to work on simplifying our paper trail.. getting rid of credit cards after we buy land (cause credit scores- we use them like a debit card) etc
12:02 Reminds me of how Jesus and the 12 lived, especially when travelling to the different cities and towns preaching. The walked everywhere and no digital technology of course. I wonder who Heaven will be when it comes down. 😊
Hi Seve, I’m between level 4 and level 5. Level 5 is ideal and optimal for me as it is more sustainable and easier than level 7 in terms of practicality and functionality. I’ve watched your videos for over two years and your values/way of life resonate and speak to me on so many levels, spiritually, psychologically, and emotionally. I travelled to Helsinki in July and being exposed to amazing/edifying environmental values embodied in the Finnish way of life has been poignant and meaningful for me. What I love most about your videos is that your authenticity, conviction, thoughtfulness, kindness, and spontaneity shine through like dappled sunlight. It is wonderful and amazing that your videos usually show walking/hiking in the forest and that your spiritual connection/kinship to nature is luminous and life-enhancing. I earnestly wish that many parts of our world practice the Finnish way of life since this would make our planet Earth more peaceful, gentle, inclusive, equitable, and thriving. :) :) :) Best wishes to you in your present and future endeavours, :) :) :) Greetings from Vancouver, Canada.
Thank you for your kind words! I’m so glad my videos and also the Finnish way of life resonate with you 😊 Hope I can keep inspiring others in the future too!
We are at Level 5. Decluttering is done. The Social, Physical, Phone, Life, decluttering has been accomplished. We know what we need to live, and our lives are sorted. I used to have friends in stage 1. And we just could not agree to move forwards. So I had to let those people go. It was too maddening for me. The saying goes, "If you clean up the periphery, the outsides, (i.e. your house, home, and yard) successfully, then the insides follow suit, in due time." Life Will Get better. People cannot live well at all, if all they look at day in and day out is a mess of clutter and stale food, dirty dishes piled in the sink unwashed, and take away boxes and trash piled up. It screams "Help Me, but No I Don't Need Help, Your Help !!"
Agree 100% I think it was in "Hoarders" they explained it was pointless to declutter for someone else, even if it was a loved one and you live with this person. Because the hoarding is deeply personal and often a symptom of something else. By cleaning for them, you treat a symptom but not the root cause and 1) it will came back if the hoarder did not treat the issue 2) They will resist and even resent you for trying to help them.
Between 5 & 6! I've been a minimalist for just over 10 years now. For my own personal 'stuff' - I own very little! My entire "wardrobe" for 4 seasons fits into ONE suitcase (including the boots and winter coat). However! The rest of my family doesn't want to live in an empty house - so we compromise!
I'm definitely a level 3 and I'm really happy! I don't bring things into my house unless I'm truly excited about them and going to get regular value from it and I try to keep excess input (like the news and social media) out of my space and life whenever I can.
Older woman at Level 4. It is very hard work physically, generations of inherited thing as well as my own. So wish had come to this earlier but very happy to see I have liberated myself and won’t be burdening my children. If I reach Level 5, so be it! Still in the trenches now. Thank you 😊
Hii Seve Wishing u all good health nd lots of happiness 😊 🌿 In between level 3-4 but my heart is at level 6 . I mean I wish to be at leave 6 as I lov nature nd a simple life. I am frm India nd after lockdown I visited Ladakh 🗻solo , its is a extreme wheather place. It really changed me. It gave me prospective tht I don't need so much of stuff to be happy. Frm since I started declutting but yaa it's nt easy when u r nt staying alone at least fr me. I really hope till this year end I will reach close to my goal nt th leavel 6 but atleast sumwhere. I am so thankful tht I found ur channel. U r really a light in th darkness. Thank u so so much 🙏💕🌿
I'm somewhere between level 2 and 3. I'm very aware now of where my money is going and what I'm bringing in, it comes in quite slowly.. things also leave very slowly
wow. this is (one of) the best Minimalism Video I ever saw. Thank you so much! :) I live in a Camper and would say, I´m stage 5-6 :) definiately I feel Satge 6 90%, but I still have more clothers than needed. Not a ton, though. In every other persession area I only have what I need. Man, I love it!! And I love to see videos of other Minmalists who truly understand the full concept, not only the declutter - part or the material part in general. Well done!!! :)
Thank you so much! Yeah, for me minimalism goes way beyond just physical items, I think we can be minimalists in all areas of life 😊🌿 Wishing you all the best for your youtube journey too!
I think I'm on level 1.5 😅 I look forward to working on entering level 2 by the end of this year. God has been good, I just need to manage the blessings better. Thank you for this video. New viewer, this approach to space and items will certainly help me be less stress and make keeping the new covenant easier. ❤ God bless.
Thank you for this nice overview! As a visual artist I'm at level 5 or 6. Living furniture free (two chairs for guests) and with very few items (mainly possessions to make art) it gives both freedom and focus. However, as a visual artist you need more supplies and materials compared to writers or people that work with the laptop. And in the process of creating it often gets messy. This gives the space often a cluttered view, but it's always easy to clean!
As a partner of an artist, I totally understand this. I think it all comes down to the systems of cleaning after you finish and also keeping your supplies organized 🌿😊
I'm at level 2/3 slowly approaching 3/4. I've consciously bought so much less stuff in past few years but haven't decluttered that much yet. Being a crafty person (crochet) there's so much stuff I think I might still use 😅 At the same time I'm more aware possessions hold me back and I'm trying to let go of things before we move to our new apartment. Thank you for this video.
I'm level 5. I love, use and appreciate everything I have and constantly declutter to keep it that way. If someone gives me something I don’t want, I pass it on/donate it. The only thing I have a lot of is Christmas decor. But I love and use it all and it lives in my loft in about 20 storage containers 11 months of the year 😅
In my 20s, levels 2-3. In my 30s, levels 3-4. I tried level 7 a few times for 6 months at a time, which helped me to level up whenever I regressed in my journey to minimalism. This video is a great POV to reflect on that area of self-development. Now I am between levels 5 and 6 where I am content and at ease. I still use lessons from the past levels to gradually help my partner who has graduated to level 3 since we met.
Which level are you at? 👇😊
I am level 5/6 and will stay there the rest of my life. That level feels just right for my mindset and makes me feel at peace with my life.
That's amazing! 🌿🚐 Do you ever feel you'd like to have a permanent home or being able to move all the time is the dream? 💫
I’m at level 4. Actively decluttering my surroundings going into a new phase of my life. I want the freedom of level 5.
That's great! Hope it's going well 🙌🏼
You make it sound like a Scientology cult bro
Currently at 4-5. I grew up with parents who kept everything, so I had to fight the hoarding mindset I learned from them to get there! It originates from a scarcity mentality in their case, as well as, for my Dad, the need to keep extensive documentation about everything he’s ever done.
They are still at Level 1 even now, acquiring more stuff every year.
Being in their large home stuffed to the seams makes me feel stressed and anxious. I’m really glad I worked through my own hoarding tendencies and have a very different approach to life.
Thanks for sharing this and well done on working to gain the right mindset! It's so crucial in this journey 🌿🌿
'for my Dad, the need to keep extensive documentation about everything he’s ever done.' This is a brilliant description of many peoples' minds.
I'm glad to hear this is possible. Seeing my parents (my mum) is worrying, but I do believe I can do better!
You can absolutely not be a hoarder if you prefer not to; you just need to make the decision and commit to it 😀
Thanks for this advice. I am definitely struggling with the mentality that I may need something 1 day

That's great! Do what works for you! 😊
Do what makes you happy.
That’s very courageous of you.
I’m at levels 4-5 and I’m happy there. I might borrow a few things from 6-7 but I prefer moderation to anything extreme.
Same for me! 😊
I'm at level 6 and I love it! I just moved countries with only 3 suitcases and after 2 weeks started decluttering again. 😂 Right now I am renting a furnished appartment temporarily. And when I find a permanent place, I am not intending to buy more than the absolute minimum that I need.
That is awesome! 🌻
Wow! Very impressive and inspiring!
Level 2 currently. Aiming for level 4. For me, the hardest part is getting rid of things I've paid for and are hard to sell.
would you buy them again if you had the money to?
"I think a person isn’t becoming minimalist under pressure". I agree with that ❤️
We see this with food, too.
Currently at level 4, aiming for level 5, but already really proud considering I used to be a shopaholic
That's huge progress! Well done 😊
Nice😊😊
That sounds very balanced indeed. Well done! 😊🌿
I used to be at level 6 when I was moving to another country with 2 backpacks, over the past few years I fell back to level 4 but your video has opened my eyes and gave me the push I needed to declutter again. Thank you! 🙌
I am happy to hear I've been able to inspire you! 🌿
Investigate Montessori philosophy. Minimalism and Montessori are so complimentary. Happy parenting. ❤
I wish I had learned this lesson much earlier in life, but I can’t change the past… I can look forward to a much happier and calmer future though ❤
Thank you so much for your lovely videos, you are one of my favourite minimalist TH-camrs to watch and I will be recommending your content to others starting out on this journey!
I feel 100% the same, in that I wish I would have learned this long ago! I would probably be a millionaire by now (age 50)!! Better late than never!
Thanks for sharing your story! And I am happy you watch my videos 🥰🙌
@@SunnyKindJourney you’re most welcome on both counts 🤗 😁
I’m a 3 but still overwhelmed so I have more work to do, I just trashed my entire wardrobe and started over so that’s taken some months to thrift pieces but it feels better. I’m aiming for a more minimal aesthetic in my clothes too. It’s hard for me to part with them more than any other category!
If you love them don’t toss them. Use what you love.
That's so inspiring! ✨
That's great! ✌✌
I am a level 6 and proud of it ❤. My goal is to live my life and be a good person.
That's lovely! 🥰
Well said! Thank you for your service for our planet 🌱😊

Been there done that. Sigh. Don't know what to tell you other than keep your chin up and do the best you can.
@@elliw. what about holding onto clothing for the smaller kids? it's more economical that way and helps the budget.. the one in one out doesn't work well
@@HosCreates If you have kids of the same gender who are similar in age that's a good option to keep your costs low.
That's great! Yeah it's all about keeping the balance in there 👏
I am coming from a culture where keeping and owning things means wealth especially food.
Level 3-4 is my perfect happy zone
It's great that you have found that for yourself! 😊
Thanks for watching! 🙌
I'm currently somewhere between 4 and 5. My journey has been amazing and I'm excited to continue to achieve the level of minimalism that works best for me (probably 6).
Wonderful! 😊
Level 4 is still far away but I’m working on it ❤
Thanks for sharing and good luck in your journey! 😊
Very few clothes, small TV, library books,
buying needs only.
Thank you! And that's good awareness from your side, you can't force them but you can be an example or inspiration for them for sure 😊
That's excellent! Where did you find out about this challenge or did you just create it yourself? 😊
I like that you've developed a spectral way of thinking about minimalism. I find that I exist at different levels throughout the year (2-4). My surroundings are an accurate reflection of my mental health.
I’m level 5. Thank you for this video! I enjoyed seeing minimalism put in stages like this.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😇
Level 4 here, now focusing a lot on digital minimalism (yes, I am reading that book 🙂). Still a long way until level 5 (I think I'll stop there), but it's a progressive path. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing! ✨
Well done! ❤
Level 5-6. It took six years to get to this point. Well worth the effort.
👏👏
Level 2 to Level 5. This took 20 years and two house moves. Our home is now way more comfortable and relaxing. We'll maintain where we are at now.
Glad you found this video, and thanks for sharing! 😊 All the best to you as well 🌱
good explanation to the levels.
Yeah i know those conversations haha 😄
5. This was very well thought out.
Thank you :)
i think i’m in a stage 4 and i’m quite enjoying getting through this level. i’m now..
-selling and removing the clutter that i don’t need anymore
-never buying or having ornament with no meaning or reason
-buying the daily necessities after they’re out of stock(never stackin them up in my pantry or storage)
-thinking more than a week when i wanna buy sth
-and thinking as simple as possible in everyday life
👏👏
4.75 here and I keep on going. I aspire to be 5.5, no more. Making these levels was a good idea. It made me realise how much I accoplished starting at level 2. Thank you for you calm and peaceful materials, all the best to You, my Friend!
👏👏
I am somewhere between 2 and 3… så 2,5. Making my way to level 3, which probably is the level where I want to be. I started somewhere inbetween 1 and 2 and I am so happy with my progress and feeling better mentally.
A nice sheet! This is not only a physical thing, many lives in clean ish homes while their inside is still like 1
Yeah that's what I tried to include in this video too. I'm happy you noticed it :)
I’m at 5 and just getting interested in minimalist thinking ☺️✨
That's great! 😊
definitley at level 4 working towards level 5. i took a break from focusing all my energy on minimalism but now i’m moving apartments and seeing all my stuff like that is making me want to start actively working towards minimalism again lol
You got this! 👏
I’m around a 3 1/2. I’m enjoying the process and it is helping me reduce the stress of motherhood! More quality time with my family.
That's lovely! ❤
Great analysis!
For me, clutter and financial ill-health came together, and when I made a change on one, the other improved too.
Wonderful! 🙌
I have been downsizing for the past few years. Less stuff is peaceful and saves money buy not bringing home stuff I don't need
Sounds excellent 🌱
This is a good example of leveling. I started with level 2 as status and is currently on Level 4 and I'm trying to maintain & build a strong habit at this level. I felt a certain joy when you discussed level 5 as I am really planning on practicing intentional living. My mindset is to enjoy this journey.
Love the mindset! 🙌
I am a level 3 actively working towards a level 4. Working on it everyday. It brings me peace and joy. I just retired and I want to feel lighter in every aspects of my life.
That's great! 😊
That's great!
Currently, level 4. Aspiring to reach (and stay at) level 5. Thanks for this video. Very helpful.
Great! 👏👏
Well done, that's amazing! 👏👏
Currently moving from level 3 to level 4. Started at level 2 a year ago. We are a family with 2 school kids and a dog. It's been live changing. Everyone is more relaxed and curiously the kids school grades improved as well.
Yeah it's crazy how it starts to affect other areas of life as well! 🌿
Love this! I am currently still in stage 4, but working my way to stage 5. I started my minimalism journey a year ago and I still make regular donation trips to the thrift store.
Wonderful! 🙌
I‘ m probably on stage 2 trying to get to stage 3. Reducing my living space from 68m2 to 40m2. Decluttering a lot of my belongings. It feels soo good🙌🙏😌
That's great, keep it up! :)
I'm a level 5 and my introduction into minimalism came about very close to how you described. I began in 2016 and am never going back.
🙌🙌 Nice!
Hi Seve,
I’m between level 4 and level 5.
Best wishes to you in your present and future endeavours, :) :) :)
Greetings from Vancouver, Canada.
So true! 🙌🏼
That's excellent! Compromising is important to keep the harmony :)
I’m at the level 2. We gonna move to new apartment soon, so I try to make some declutter before and go to level 3 or 4 😊
Sounds like a great plan! Moving is really a good opportunity to get a fresh start 😉
I'm definitely a level 3 and I'm really happy! I don't bring things into my house unless I'm truly excited about them and going to get regular value from it and I try to keep excess input (like the news and social media) out of my space and life whenever I can.
That's excellent! :)
Older woman at Level 4. It is very hard work physically, generations of inherited thing as well as my own. So wish had come to this earlier but very happy to see I have liberated myself and won’t be burdening my children. If I reach Level 5, so be it! Still in the trenches now. Thank you 😊
Hii Seve
Wishing u all good health nd lots of happiness 😊 🌿
In between level 3-4 but my heart is at level 6 . Thank u so so much 🙏💕🌿
Thanks for sharing this and I am happy you found my channel! 😊
Thanks for sharing! Hope my videos can help you in this process 😊
Love that! Thanks for watching :)
I'm level 5. I love, use and appreciate everything I have and constantly declutter to keep it that way. If someone gives me something I don’t want, I pass it on/donate it. The only thing I have a lot of is Christmas decor. But I love and use it all and it lives in my loft in about 20 storage containers 11 months of the year 😅
Sounds lovely! 🎄
As a family, we're all at a solid 5, while I'm more towards a 6. This is how it is and will remain, and that's fine.
Me gusta muchísimo porque no sólo habla de objetos sino también de compromisos, metas etc .
This was a great video! I've never thought about levels, but it's great to see where I'm headed.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Thanks for sharing! 🌿🌿
I've been striving to get from level 4 to 5 for about 15 years, I think I'm starting to reach the peace of level 5 😊
