The title doesn't seem to match the what's in the video much, although still somewhat interesting thoughts from the people interviewed. Duke does seem to have 'echoes of Genesis past' and 'echoes of Genesis future' wrapped into one. I love the album and appreciate both early and later Genesis.
There wasn't any, actually. It's rather a selection of interviews how the people like the music or why certain elements were used. Definitely not a "making of Duke", which I had actually hoped for. I still think Duke is one of their most genious albums.
Such an oddly titled documentary that was really difficult for me to get through. For anyone interested, Rael NYC has a brilliant series of Genesis documentaries on TH-cam that go into a handful of their studio albums. Again, this was just really weird & had very little to do with the Duke album. 😖
Was a little disappointed with this. Would’ve liked to see discussion that included more of the songs from Duke, including Man of our Times, Heathaze, and Cul de Sac. This was my introduction to the band, having been released the year I turned 17 and had just started buying albums. Never could get into the Peter Gabriel Genesis, though I do like a bunch of the older songs, Duke is my favorite by far, and an album that I can listen to straight through without the thought of skipping any tracks. I played this album to death and spent a lot of time listening to the vinyl on a really good pair of AKG headphones.
Quite an interesting documentary but having tribute band covers playing under the comments from the actual band is a bit jarring. A live version of Follow You Follow Me from 1978 or 1980 would have been much better. Plus the section of the documentary talking about Phil’s vocals and then you play Burning Rope with a cover vocalist who actually sounds nothing like Phil is far from ideal!! It doesn’t really reveal much about how Duke was made - nothing really - but, in fairness, it is a revealing critique of Genesis’ transition from the post Gabriel, Steve Hackett era into the pop band of the “80’s and some of the analysis of the Duke songs is good.
Although the video ultimately keeps the promise of its title, it takes a while getting there. It is enjoyable still; a different title would be better. Btw, imho Duke is one of Genesis' great albums, along with Selling England by the Pound and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. For me, though, Foxtrot is the album that first got my attention as to the musical brilliance of Genesis!
The discussion of Tony's use of a sequencer in "Follow You Follow Me" was strange, because he didn't use a sequencer. The repetitive sounds we hear at the beginning are Mike playing guitar through a delay unit. Some of the sound clips of Tony seemed like they were slowed down a little bit, I'm thinking to avoid copyright issues? Not a fan of the Genesis cover band in the background while showing slow motion live clips of Phil, because some folks might not realize it isn't him singing. But the cover band is pretty good, and I definitely applaud this video as a labor of love. As others pointed out, the title is misleading. I think it would benefit from a more honest title. I still gave this labor of love a thumbs up.
The prolonged 9 minute intro of why Steve Hackett left would have been a relevant intro for a "making of" And Then There Were Three but seems out of place here
Agreed. Also the documentary Genesis in Their Own Words where Steve Hackett hardly got a word in and to add insult to injury none of his solo work was mentioned. Disgraceful especially when they mentioned Calling All Menstruations... I mean 'Stations.' Nasty Knob is an anagram for Tony Banks 😂 🤣 😂... It's true on every level.
Why is Hackett mentioned for Duke .. he left before And Then There Were Thrre ... and he joined after Anthony Phillips left ... and as the Armando Gallo book documented was his contribution of "atmosphere" with his guitar ... which really came out in his solo work ... as much as I love his solo work why is he even mentioned for Duke ❤
My first comment is based on the 10 minutes about Hackett .. who i compare to John Fruciante from RHCP ...a guitarist who knew how to fill the open spaces ... while Genesis did write more radio ready songs, every album still had beautiful long songs as well (Behind the lines/Duchess .... The Brazilian... Home by the sea ..... etc)
@@danielduesentriebjunior there is no good dictator’s especially when the outcome is the departure of the lead guitarist and virtuoso like Steve Hackett
If Inside The Music won't talk about DUKE that much I won't either.. I love that fact that Steve Hackett is touring doing GENESIS in all of his shows, Until seeing Steve live the closest thing to seeing OLD GENESIS was THE MUSICAL BOX there real good. With PHIL, MIKE and TONY [DUKE] is my fav without PETER and STEVE
Phil did not take the reins. He wanted to go in an instrumental direction. Gabriel had as much of a background in soul. Banks and Rutherford wrote most of the new material.
Et là les synthétiseurs de banks prennent le top .... et c est normal , genesis c est lui . C est vraiment le meilleur compositeur en clavier que je connaisse. . 😊
peter gabriel fabulous... ok !.. tony banks virtuose ok!... phil collins showman .. ok!.. rutherford cool the anthony philips friend.. ok!.. but the real crazy genius of genesis is STEVE.. !!!! without steve GENESIS would not be GENESIS..........! (sorry for my bad english... !)... Chris
Hackett, and his incoherence go massively on my nerves, particularly considering that he's out there touring with the only music that guarantees bums on seats, Genesis'. So, be a good lad Steve, say thanks you and then shut up and play, or be coherent, keep bitching and refuse to play that music, the last alternative seems to be beyond you, be a Gent, stop complaining and don't ever play Genesis music again, like Peter for intsance.
This is amateur hour in terms of subject matter. This documentary has very little to do with Duke. The first half is about Steve Hackett and Then There Were Three. Interesting yes, but also really bad.
The difference between 'Prog' and 'Progressive' is that progressive music evolved and moved on, whilst Prog remains introspectively stuck in the 1970s. I'm glad Hackett left when he did as he was holding them back musically and was, it seems, a bit of a miserable jealous sod.
I know it's subjective, but I think their albums got 'progressively' worse after he left. The music was less interesting and less emotional. I think they peaked in 1976 with Trick and W&W. I do really love And then there were Three, but you could hear the prog foundations of the band starting to shake at that point. Duke was a solid cohesive album with some great moments, but after that they produced mostly pop twaddle IMO, and there was far better pop music around at the time too. In effect, for my ears their music regressed, not progressed after Hackett left.
Certainly these were their best two albums. Not clear why Tony has to be blamed for that. His influence on this wonderful music could not be more obvious.
How bizarre and awkward and woefully incomplete this was! Talking on Duchess, then moving to Guide Vocal, then suddenly back to Duchess... oops! All done! This is what we get from AI, people. Scrambled messes that don't inform at all. Blocking this channel.
I WAS 17 WHEN " DUKE" CAME OUT. I AM NOW 62. GENESIS HAS ALWAYS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME❤❤❤
I didn't realize Duke was "The Steve Hackett Story"
Aside from the deceptive title, this is an excellent view of Steve Hackett's contribution to Genesis. They were never the same without him.
They just kept getting better.
Best band EVER!! Is this about DUKE?? There must be some MISUNDERSTANDING.......
They do get to Duke eventually - Turn it on again….

Showing a title page for Duke with the up to 1975 (but no later) band says it all.
Magnificence at its finest…

Very little footage of how Duke was made

You're right I've seen a few of these unofficial documentaries & actually bought a couple but once you've seen them they never go back on
Good to know! Thank you ✌🏼🌻

@Itsjustjess352 tx for the RaelNYC tip, interesting stuff, but I will really have to try to ignore the narrator's over enunciated scouse accent 😀

@@richardwilliamson2366 I would suspect that they were not allowed full versions of any actual Genesis songs or were too cheap to licence them?!

What's with the title of this video Not Matching Up with the content in it? I mean I love Genesis before Hackett left, so why the deception?
And then they were 5 !
Steve Hackett had sole writing credit on Horizons.

Steve hackett meraviglioso chitarrista ❤
Certo uno dei migliori, peccato che in questo disco non ci sia...
I still consider Duke a Masterpiece. Perfect blend of Prog & Pop. PLAY LOUD!

Where’s the Duke?
Don't you just love Tony Banks ?
If this was an album about Duke, why did you spend so much time talking about Hackett?
i have the dvd about that
no copyrights ?
That doesn't sound like Phil Collins singing Follow you, Follow me.
Agreed. Maybe the singer from Hackett's band?
I think maybe all the musical performances contained in this work are covers.
Tony was a dictator and it was easier to be a dictator with only 3 members left
In case he was a dictator he was the best dictator they could have wished for.

Very odd to have a photo of Genesis circa Nursery Cryme for an 80s album…

To associate The Duke album logo with the photo of the five pieces lineup with Gabriel and Hackett is a historical falsehood

The English music scene seems like they have a lot drama
genesis started to go downhill
with Steve Hackett's departure....
with him....went all the prog....
It's not about the making Duke, and the Genesis music is all a coverband. Sounds like Cat Stevens singing Phil.

Duke is probably the last acceptable record, then the crap came big time.
Whoever's is singing Follow You Follow me is terrible, why isn't Phil's voice on it?
Terrible...is when I said goodbye to Genesis....until there last Album which was good enough to buy.
