These days, A Trick of the Tail. It's fantastically catchy and there's something so uplifting but also menacing about it that it can never get old for me. It's just such rich work - and from the great, post-Gabriel album too, of course.

There are so many great Genesis songs, but I am going to say Ripples (yes an unusual choice) from the Album "Trick of a Tail", which was maybe the most definitive Genesis album.
"Supper's Ready" IS the definitive example of Genesis at their pinnacle as well as prog rock in general...period.😇
1:20 Everybody "blames" Phil for the shorter, catchier songs, but it was Tony himself who admitted that him (Tony) and Mike were the ones who always wanted to try to be more pop. This he said in a biography.
I think " And Then There Was Three " is an underrated Genesis classic that was the finale to their prog years before they went pop !
That album was the final nail for me. Once I'd heard "Misunderstanding" from the subsequent Duke Album I was like "Nope!" lol. There's only a few songs I like of theirs since 1980 with notable ones being "Domino" and "Driving The Last Spike".....I can understand why they changed though
I think it's a great album, too. Underrated.
Motherlode is good. Otherwise this album is near the bottom for me, but that’s the kind of music people wanted. I can’t fault them for that. Prog was dying. You adapt or call it quits.

Italy loved Genesis right out of the gate.

Yeah they are still massive there. In general it seems Italy really embraced the more progressive side of what was coming out of the UK and the rest of the Continent in the 70's. Y'all have great taste, always have!
Photographer & Biographer Armando Gallo said that people in Italy liked operatic pop groups. Genesis was one of those bands who's songs & concerts had operatic elements.
I hear stylistic similarities between the introduction to "Get 'em out by Friday" from Foxtrot, and the Prelude to Il Paliacci.
Together with Rush, I think Genesis is my favourite band of all time. In terms of songwriting they are unbeatable and the diversity of their career, musicianship and inventiveness between 1970 and 1991 is simply incredible. Most importantly, while other prog rock bands’ music is just as complex, well-played and virtousticly performed, no other band wrote more BEAUTIFUL music than Genesis, from Visions of Angels to Fading Lights.
My favourites too. To me late 70s/early 80s Genesis and Rush through the 80s had the perfect blend of creativity, complexity and beautiful melodies.
I love them both as well- with Genesis, having the larger band really assists in expanding the sound. Rush did an amazing job for 3, they had such a solid core that lasted their entire career. Genesis like Rush also changed their musical styles and songwriting through the 70's and 80's. I love all of the classic Genesis, but for some reason I really Love "Trick of the Tail"- that has to be my most favorite entire record. I also want to make a nod to Yes "Close to the Edge" which is another favorite. I think these 3 bands did so much in just ten years (70's to the 80's). All 3 of them adjusted their sound in the 80's which I like and respect their evolutions with the New Wave Era :)

I’m not going to disagree with you. I appreciate the musicianship and the progressiveness of the music, but it just doesn’t do anything for me. I much prefer Gabriel’s solo efforts. Same with Rush - love their first two albums (Caress and 2112), but the rest is just high level musicianship, but not much of a “wow.” I ignore Yes altogether as they just sound like a garage band to me. Sorry.
For me there is a podium occupied by Genesis, Rush and Yes with a tendence in the last 20 years to put Genesis in the first place and Rush in second place.

Personally, I think every Genesis record from 1968 - 1983 is great, but the "Nursery Chryme" to "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" period is my favorite period, like the Mach 2 line-up of Deep Purple.

Favourite song? Of course it's "Supper's Ready", but "Can-Utility and the Coastliners" is one I've listened to more than any other song from this period.

Standout tracks from The Lamb.... ...and The Lamia.... goosebumps for mentioning this song. If I was to introduce someone to Progressive Rock I would pick this song. It's not overly long, or complicated, yet it's still a perfect prog song.
Hackett-era Genesis is truly tops, producing some of the finest-ever prog or rock.

I love his sound with artists such as Genesis, and Elton John. 🎹
My favorite Genesis song is the one that starts with "Looking for Someone" (Trespass, Tract one, side one)and ends with "Follow you follow me"(and Then There Were Three, side two, final tract)! They are all excellent and sublime with my absolute favorites being the Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett era. In my humble opinion The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is the absolute best album in Genesis’s catalog as well as the best album in progressive rock history! Exquisite, haunting, gorgeous, majestic, regal music-like the windows of heaven opened and poured down godly beautiful musical revelation from the Eternal Throne upon us thirsty, hungry, receptive, and needful audiophile mortals!
I grew up only hearing their 80s and 90s offerings and the Lamb.... and carpet crawlers. Then a coworker introduced me to their earlier works a few years ago, and all I can say is that it has been life changing both spiritually and creatively.
These albums were being released as I was a teenager discovering music. I saw Genesis live several times. I consider myself very lucky.

Me, too...I saw their first live show in North America a couple of miles from my house in Waltham, saw "Supper's Ready" live with Peter Gabriel and "The Lamb" live in Boston!! Only drawback is I'm OLD enough to have seen it, but was only still in high school back then...I remember it well, though.
My only regret is never seeing them live, even the reunion last year. But all 5 members have touched me with all their musicianship! Loved both Gabriel and Collins years!
I know some people will moan that it's not the same, but there is a band called The Musical Box, and they are doing about 50 dates over these next coming months.
I've seen them three times, and I am going in February to watch them again, but this time it's the Lamb, and it's supposed to be their best show they do.
Even Genesis gave them their touring gear, and also endorse the band, they really are that good.
The Genesis members go to the shows from time to time, they even said while sitting in the audience

The Musical Box are brilliant . My older brother has always been into Genesis & me only since Feb 1978 when hearing Foxtrot .We watched them in Portsmouth in February. U r correct. The only downside was the audience whom must’ve all been with them in 1972 as they were all very old & acted very English & applauded enthusiastically when appropriate. I actually felt young & vaped into my closed jacket as if being back at school…but Musical Box are as close as we’ll ever get 😁👍

Genesis was my main favorite band during high school. I worked flipping burgers so I could buy all their albums, go to their concerts, buy stickers for my car and buttons to wear at work, and even integrated some of their characters as dungeon master in dungeons and dragons. Great times, and I still listen to their music all these years later

Genesis was one of the most important bands to me during my formative and teenage years. The four albums Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, is for me the absolute highlight, with Nursery Cryme standing out as the best album they ever did, in my humble opinion. The Fountain of Salmacis is my number one favourite song by them.
I do however enjoy every single album they've made during their career, with the exception of From Genesis to Revelation and Calling all Stations. But the Phil Collins years cannot compare with the Gabirel years in absolute magnificence.
I've always been awed by Genesis. Nursery Cryme was such a groundbreaking album. Nothing like it had ever been done before and is was just so sophisticated coming from a bunch of 19 year olds. Together with a few other bands like King Crimson, these young guys formed the nucleus of all of the best music of the late 20th Century and beyond. And that's not just in the prog world. These guys touched and influenced all the best pop music too. When you actually get into everyone of the artists that these guys collaborated with over the years and connect all the dots, you really start to see that these young early prog guys always come out in the center.
Supper's Ready. The drop at the end of the long break and the way Gabriel sings "to take them to the new Jerusalem"...

I agree that Hackett's departure is the turning moment...however And Then There Were Three still keeps that vibe going. Duke is when things really start to shift.

Thanks for throwing me back to my childhood! For me The Firth of Fifth is probably my favorite track from this band. I was fortunate to see them play live three time in the late seventies. My 16 yr old son play drums and started to listen to King Crimson with Bill Bruford. I introduced him to Genesis by playing Watcher of the Skies so I could show him the awesome bass line and drums, to which he instantly started to learn and share with his band mates and friends. Imagine ,16 yr old 70s prog heads! Good music remains good music with no respect to the passage of time.
Music is a time machine. Whenever you first hear a song it becomes new music.
I’m a 16 year old drummer/guitar/keyboard player and genesis is absolutely fascinating to me I’m glad other teens dig their music as well!

I still quite often play Suppers Ready in the art studio while I am working. I did get to see Gabriel in his 1985 tour in an outdoor venue in Montreal - I still have a lot of their vinyl; I even have a copy of GTR - the album Steve Hackett and Steve Howe did together.
Hi Warren April 22nd 2005 I went to see a band called The Musical Box perform The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway at The Cambridge Corn Exchange It was a night I will never forget They performed the whole album in its entirety Then they played Watcher Of The Skies Then finally The Musical box I was completely speechless I'd had seen many photos in Genesis books of this tour And wondered What it would have been like to have been there and experienced it My dream came true that night

I bought my 1st Genesis album, Foxtrot, in Nov. 1972. I bought my last Genesis album, I.T., in 1986. That was it for me.
"Its sounds better and better with the passing of time" Steve Hackett's statement is my sentiment. Your segment on Genesis is sublime. It is a succinct, thorough and entertaining historical document that I completely enjoyed. I look forward to your second part. Such a group of influential musicians will ever be difficult to equal and their esteem only continue to grow. Bravo.

The Lamia, Supper’s Ready, Firth Of Fifth, Anyway, Ripples, Get Em Out By Friday, Dance On A Volcano, The Battle Of Epping Forest, Anyway, Back In NYC, The Return Of Giant Hogweed, Watcher Of The Skies, Blood On The Rooftops, One For The Vine, The Fountain Of Salmacis , Can Utility and The Coastliners are the outstanding pieces of the 1970-1976 era . For me. Deep In The Motherlode, The Lady Lies…, but most of Duke is very good too. Then after that it’s another band. Also good in a different way, but another band.

Selling England is one of the all time great albums ... however trick of the tail is my favourite Genesis album. I love the simplicity of it in comparison to the other albums and the powerful rock sound. But pretty much everything the band put out is incredible
Supper's Ready is the best for me. Great melodies and harmonies, keys changing, and odds time signatures, make this work a collage of 6 or 7 pieces blended so well that it became a prog rock classic.

I was fortunate to see Genesis on their Foxtrot tour in 1973 - it was indescribably great. Now in 2023 I've tickets to see Steve Hackett do this show with his band 50 years latter. I'm anticipating that it sound every bit as good!!
Booked Genesis for our school dance after nursery Crimes was released - They cost 100 pounds, and I got a signed copy of the album

I can't think of anyone in the same leaque. Maybe Zappa? ELO? I liked Patti Smith and Roxy Music a lot.
@@rogersmith7396 Roxy Music were the most influential bands of the 70s, while Zappa proved to be so much more than a rocker with delusions of grandeur. But his playing steadily declined, IMO, after the original Mothers albums of the late 60s like Weasels and Burnt Weeny. His playing benefited from the lack of efx that replaced the heart and soul of his earlier solos that felt organic and not contrived. Burnt Weeny Sandwich will always be Zappa's peak solo period.
@@scifiwriter98 I saw him play Overnight Sensation and Apostrophe in Dallas. Like the first. saw the second as going down hill. I must have seen him earlier but I don't remember (Too much pot?) One size fits all was a disaster. We used to play Just another Band from LA in college with Flow and Eddie, liked it a lot. Saw 200 Motels, too much for me. His family is fighting over his royalty rights. Since he was virtually unknown on radio I wonder what they are fighting about. I liked Waka Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo a lot. Have them on 8 tracks. I have played my Uncle Meat once. Have a couple of George Duke albums. Oh, and I have Reuben and the Jets.

My favourite band ever. I keep coming back to Genesis since I was a teenager, and the vocals on Dancing with the Moonlit Knight are my way out of anxiety.
I've been a fan of Genesis since the late 1980s and have since delved into their earlier stuff starting with The Lamb. I had no idea what I was in for but I loved the sounds and creativity. Also, I'm from Aylesbury which is where Genesis had a huge following in their early career. They often mention Friars in interviews as being one of their favourite venues to play. I'm proud of that and Steve Hackett has played at Aylesbury a number of times in recents years. I've seen him every time and it's such joy to hear him play those old songs. So, favourite Genesis songs... difficult one as there are so many. Supper's Ready, Horizons, Firth of Fifth, The Lamia, Cinema Show, Duke's Travels, Musical Box, Driving The Last Spike, Domino etc....
I didn't discover Genesis till their later years. Thanks to you-tube I'm discovering their early stuff. I love it! 😎👍 Born in 63' grew up on classic rock.

Brilliant potted history. As for Goosebump moments, You were spot on. The Firth of Fifth guitar solo by Steve does it to me every time. Same with Anyway from Lamb Lies Down. The Keyboard parts played by Banks and the Lyrics by Gabriel on Anyway are a perfect marriage of Tone poem orchestration and Borges style poetic lyricism.
A lot of Gabriel’s flute solos are also goose fleshing.
For me once Gabriel and Hackett left it was not the same
True, it wasn't the same, but in my humble (yet conceited) opinion, they were still often quite good.

Anthony Phillips’ The Geese and The Ghost is my favorite Genesis album. And Genesis is one of my favorite bands. Seriously worth checking out. Turn it on on a sunny or rainy day and let it play.

Beans and Bangers!!! I can tell you put a lot of research into this, and it paid off! After watching many retrospectives on Genesis, I think this is near the top of the list. It is concise with no distracting digressions and covers every turning point in the band's history. Brilliant writing! I've always wondered, "What would happen if you put a bunch of geniuses together in the same room?"

totally agree on chicken skin for Firth of Fifth...but lets also recognize that during the keyboard solo, Collins and Rutherford are killin' it, esp in the Seconds Out version. Also a hair stand on end moment is the 'major' section keyboard solo in the middle of Cinema Show, this melody is sublime.
The Cinema Show solo section is a perfect example of why Banks is so much more than a prog keyboard player. Yes, players like Wakeman and Emerson may possess better technical proficiency, according to the experts, at least, but neither has ever composed a multiple keyboard solo with such a variety of tones and dynamic impact. The mellotron choir vocals have never been used to such great effect. And Banks mastery of the ARP Pro Soloist is a master class on the finicky instrument.
To his great credit, Banks never even tried to compete in the 'notes per second' aspect of keyboard playing, preferring instead to create emotional structures that added new dimensions to the composition it was part of.
@@scifiwriter98 totally agree. It's not like he's not capable of fast licks either. 🤷🏻 He's just not living there all the time such as Wakeman, Moraz, etc...

@@Producelikeapro Imagine hearing Genesis for the first time, as a support band. It would be mind blowing! It reminds me of when I saw Supertramp. Supporting Supertramp were Gallagher and Lyle. But wait! There's more! Supporting Gallagher and Lyle was a young man, humble yet confident, sitting on a stool, with just an acoustic guitar. As he introduced himself he said he was recording with his band, but could not yet afford to tour with them, so we would just have to imagine the band. He then played a set of all his own work, which, if I remember correctly, opened with "Spanish Train". I'm sure you and most of your subscribers know who that young man was!

For me it's nearly impossible to choose between any of the 70s albums their all just so great
I bought Genesis Live in 1976. Loved it so much I bought Selling England by the pound. I was 12. Ha. Amazingly, I never got to see them live. I was too young. I did see Gentle Giant. I kept buying Genesis albums after Gabriel left but I could see they were on a path to straight pop. I ended up going backward and bought 2 earlier Genesis albums and obviously bought Gabriel's first solo album. Now that solo album is awesome. As I grew up, I moved to buying Clash albums and ska and reggae albums in the late 70s and early 80s.
I still have all of my original albums and am amused by the resurgence of vinyl nowadays. 60 dollars for a LP??? I feel sooooo old. I bought mine for 3.99-5.99.

Fantastic overview, I really enjoyed this video. That Genesis documentary you kept showing clips from - I watched that back in the early 90s. Back then, I only knew Genesis as a pop outfit. I was stunned to learn that Peter Gabriel had been the original singer. I watched that documentary over and over again before plunging into their discography and becoming a life-long fan. I love their prog years and I love most of their pop years. Just a fantastic group of musicians/songwriters making some of the best music ever.

Seeing his Genesis revisited show live made me realize how important Steve’s guitar work in Genesis was to their sound .. i loved his solo set after hearing the songs for the first time

Thank you for giving Genesis the attention that they deserve. I feel that they haven't been given the love and respect from the mainstream since they fell out of favour in the mid-90s.
They've been my favourite band since I was a kid in the early/mid-80s.

Great job on making an overview of the first decade of Genesis. I didn't grow up with that, but having been a Peter Gabriel fan I delved back into this era and I found it to be very creative, agreeable and artistic. These studio albums became my favorites (Foxtrot/Selling especially), but there were a few in the post Prog era that stand up on their own very well indeed. Thanks!

Another superb video for my musical education Warren thank you. Being 2 yrs old in 1967 I didn't experience the in the moment impact of Genesis and my older brother who was 9 yrs my senior didn't play Genesis records. But it's never too late to go through those earlier Genesis albums ❤

How a bunch of guys in their early 20s came up with this complex, richly emotional, beautifully crafted and superbly performed music defies belief. The creation of music is different today and such a thing will probably never happen again - a sobering thought.

What a beautiful analysis about one of my favourite bands ever. I've a profound respect for all Genesis have produced , but in my opinion "A Lamb Lies down on Broadway" is timeless and far ahead from his time even today. Thanks for sharing .....you're really a pro. Greetings from Brazil

Thanks Warren for making great videos about my favourite bands of all times...Genesis and King Crimson. Because of Genesis I become a full time musician. I love all eras of Genesis because even the pop songs like Jesus He Knows me are great songs in a pop context. They always proved that they can do something special in other genres. Ofcourse I love the prog stuff more but as I get older I know how hard it can be writing something that can enjoy "more" people. Genesis rules!

The first period (until Steve Hackett's departure) is my favourite version of Genesis. Of the second period LPs, I still liked "Duke".
Favourite song? Keeps changing, whether "Supper's Ready" from Foxtrot, or "Dancing with the Moonlit Knight" or "Firth of Fifth" from Selling England by the Pound, or "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" or "Back in NYC" or "Carpet Crawlers" or more from The Lamb. And my choice can move beyond those, too, depending on my moods and what I've been listening to recently.
And I was listening to these Genesis albums in the 1980s (along with some Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson), while also appreciating XTC, Magazine, Gang of Four, solo Peter Gabriel, Roxy Music, Buzzcocks, The Police, The Jam, The Smiths, Madness and The Specials, REM, Talking Heads; Motown; The Beatles, etc.
